ATTENTION: SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT:
everyone knows that i workout everyday and i ride my bike everyday and usually run to/from work to the train station. EVEN with all that, and not eating crazy crap, etc, due to the snow and having to slow down or walk the last stretch, or not going as fast as i'm used to, having to leave the gym earlier than usual to make sure i give myself time to slowly get to the train....... i still managed to gain 4 lbs because of it.
i'm not wiggin, i'll take it off. but i just wanted to get you to thinking about your daily activity (or lack thereof) and what you are putting in your body. even the little bit of slacking off will affect you, even me.
when you get to my stage of "usual" exercise or even if you don't, it's funny how you don't have to get on the scale and you can just feel that you've gained a couple of pounds. i weighed myself yesterday and i was right.
sharing is caring..... carry on....
Yep ... I lost focus this past year with my husband's situation, and on went the weight. I'm not my highest weight, but still higher than I like. I hope to regain focus again soon.3 -
Graceandmiracles wrote: »Graceandmiracles wrote: »Back at it today. I’m thinking I may have to drop my calories by 100 a day to lose. It seems I have tried many times to lose at 1200 calories but because I go over a day or two a week I struggle to drop weight. I’m wondering if I drop to 900 plus 200 for exercise and factor in the cheat days I might be more consistent long term? Anyhow I’m giggling at the snow you all are getting in the south. I’m in VT 😁.
It's hard to get all the nutrients for need at much less than 1200 calories. Can you increase your exercise a bit? Can you do without the cheat days? It has helped me to maintain a routine of eating and deviate only on rare special occasions.
By cheat days I mean days when I go over calories unwillingly or allow myself a free day. I have found trying to commit to not having splurges at least once a week does not work for me. However I’m realizing when I allow myself a cheat day I always go overboard because I tend to bake and have a large amount available. I’ve decided to not do this and buy something small and when it’s gone it’s gone. Going over calories at least once a week happens and this seems to keep me from losing if I don’t go under 1000 the other days. I exercise 40 minutes six days a week. I think increasing this might help but I hesitate to think it will be enough.
This was exactly how I reached my highest weight.
I ate well during the week, and each week I would lose a little bit of weight. Then I would eat whatever on weekends, and would gain a little bit of weight.
Ever-so-gradually ... I reached my highest weight. So subtly and gradually, I barely noticed. Until one day, I had to purchase an item of clothing in Size 18 Aus (Size 14 USA) Then I knew. And that's when it ended.

They are doing the tracheotomy tomorrow morning on my aunt. I don't know why that scares me so, h3ll just made it through 2 open heart surgeries on an infant from far away. The tracheotomy scares me. Prayers please. I want to be there, but can't do more there than here.
Thank you,
Kylia weepy in Ohio
When they told me my husband needed one, it scared me too. And I had to make the decision whether or not he should have it as "next of kin" because he was unconscious. I burst into tears.
Fortunately a kind Dr sat down beside me and explain it all to me, and then I was (mostly) OK with it.
And it was OK.
I hope it will be OK in your Aunt's situation.

Lisa the same thing happened to DH. It is a very common side effect of pain pills.

Margaret, I forgot to tell you how much zi enjoyed the ice sculptures. They are magnificent.
Lisa- my Fitbit doesn’t work at the grocery store when I push a cart. Someone suggested I attach it to my shoe. Haven’t tried that yet but it might be hard for you to do. Thinking of you.
I was thinking Aubrey looked like she might have red hair. My oldest daughter has the dark ref hair which she hated as a child but soon realized how beautiful and unusual it is with her brown eyes.
Got to go do blood work for my yearly next week. Haven’t seen dr in a year. He always says just keep doing what you’re doing

I hate having appointments or meetings hanging over me... it's just my nature. I can't help but anticipate or dread them, and they fill my mind up, instead of allowing me to relax.
Okay, whining over. The home health nurse is here in 45 minutes, and it will be fine, I'm just becoming a cranky old person.
Philosophy on cheat days ahead, putting it in a spoiler, so if you're not interested, you don't have to read it. Warning, it's a long one.My own opinion is that, by making food into a big deal, whether it's "cheat" days with all that implies of cheating ourselves, or lying to ourselves, or demonizing it, or separating it into "good" foods and "bad" foods, we're setting ourselves up for failure. By telling ourselves that we are "good" or "bad" because we've eaten something we "shouldn't" or not eaten something we "should," we actually give food the power to rule our lives and determine whether we are a good or a bad person!
From there, it is really, really, easy to get overwhelmed. And we do.
We invest an enormous amount of emotion into food. Every celebration involves food, and every tragedy - if you were raised in the south like I was, if someone in the family dies, the first response of the community is to bring food to the family. When we are stressed, we turn to food for comfort, and when we are happy, we use it to make us happier.
However, I think MFP helps us get in the habit of knowing what's going in our bodies, both in calories and in nutrition, and that's a very good thing. When we can look at food and know it's more calories than we need right then for fuel, we can choose not to eat it, or to eat only half. We know what's nutrient-rich, and we know what foods are nutrient-poor. We make choices that benefit our body and our goals for that body, or we don't. We just need to own that.
A "diet" isn't what you don't eat, it's what you do. Food is fuel, not emotion. It doesn't hug you back. That said, Heather, for instance, does an amazing job of balancing off the pleasure that she takes in really great food with enormous amounts of exercise. She chooses that path. It works for her.
I've chosen to construct my relationship with food differently, because eventually, I will throw up my hands and stop counting calories. By moving over to high protein/low fat/low carb, I feel better, I can quit counting calories, and just orient on getting fuel into my body, and most importantly, I can sustain it without making myself completely crazy.
There is no one-size-fits-all, you just need to choose the path that works for you. For me, the less I think about food, in general, the better I do overall. For Heather, planning and scripting her meals, knowing how many calories are in them, and how much exercise she must do to burn off those calories, is what works for her. Find what works for you, and do that.
OK. Now I wait. *sigh.* Did I mention I hate having appointments hanging over me?
Love y'all,

Our gas fireplace hasn’t been working for a month or so. Today the repairman is scheduled to come and fix it. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that all goes well. Our house is warm enough, but the fireplace makes it feel cozy.

Hi all!
Crazy weather in GA too! Wore a light dress yesterday because it was in the mid-70s. High of 51 today, going down into the 30s tonight.
I have been following along and keep thinking I'll comment and then get distracted:)
Lisa:-so glad the surgery went well! I know when my dad has his hip replaced they had him walking down the hall soon after he woke up from the surgery! All I know about knee replacement is Do The PT! Hope everything starts *moving* soon
Re: Chicken pox/shingles. When I was in my late 20s, I took part in one of the final clinical trails for the vaccine (my dad got me in-he's a doctor). We were amazed when they tested me and I indeed I had never had it, especially since my dad was a pediatrician AND everyone around me (except my sister) had it. My sister ended up getting it in college and it was horrible. So, in theory, I shouldn't get shingles-fingers crossed!
So I'm 1.6 pounds away from my goal weight and things have ground to a halt. Of course. I'm adding more exercise and really watching my calories. I know I have to be patient-not my strong suit.
My employer has a program called Know Your Numbers. It's a 15 minute thing with a nurse where they do a blood test, test your BP, measure you waist, weigh you and do your body fat density with one of those handheld tester things. The nurse did that one twice because she didn't believe the results. I believe she said something like "you don't have a pinch of fat on you!" Which is of course not true. Because my body fat percentage is 36.2!! Which is way too high!!! I've looked online and it seems weight lifting will help with that-I work with a trainer but we haven't been able to meet recently because we both were sick. Also, cutting carbs. I'm not going to go crazy on that, but I did change my macros on MFP a little, so we'll see if that helps. Any other suggestions??
Hugs and prayers to those who need them
High fives and congratulations to those who need them

Bitter cold today.
I had a fight with DS last night. I wanted him to stay at his work overnight. He works at a casino with an attached hotel. I was willing to pay for him to stay overnight. The roads were terrible last night and below wind chill. He drives over 30 miles to get to work.
He will have to make the drive again today in sub zero wind chill and black ice on the road.
He has lived with us on an off for 10 years. He told us he would move out in August and it is now Feb. I did recently start charging him rent. He has been living here rent free for over a year. I did charge him some rent when he lived with us about three years ago. I know rents are high and it is hard for a young person to get started. Enough is enough.
Part of the problem is he has odd hours. He comes home between 10-12 at night. He stays up until 2-5 in the morning. Then he sleeps until noon-two. It adds to my difficulty in establishing routine sleep patterns and being quiet in the mornings.
It makes it difficult to work around him. I have told him I know he tries to be quiet but I know he disturbs my sleep. He was gone for four days and I got the best sleep I had in quite a while.
I was attacked in the middle of the night so I am very sensitive to noise at night.
I wanted a break and night free from worry.
The thing that is upsetting me the most is we have a pattern of him not picking up the ball and doing what he needs to do unless I have a fit. Not good for me or him.
I tried to set a date of January 1 for him to be out. He is still here. I told him it like staying at the party too long. Not surprising to me that I finally blew up.
I am going to talk to him today that he stays down at work at least once a month until he moves out especially now that our winter is being so difficult.

Lisa - You've got me to a T. Today I completed nearly all my exercises, apart from the push ups and the weights. This afternoon I was planning on taking the bus to shop, but the weather was so horrendous, (wind and rain), that I did some recumbent bike instead. So I've knocked out 700 calories altogether. The most since I've been sick.
I like to think I've got a European attitude to food - that it is the centre of life and should be enjoyed to the most. I take delight in every meal. I've just been preparing the butternut squash for roasting. We will eat half of it and keep the rest for a soup. For the last 15 minutes I'm going to throw in zucchini and tomatoes. Lots of seasoning and herbs. I will eat a huge plateful for not too many calories - around 120. On top of that I will have two Cumberland sausages for another 250. I will drink a glass of red wine with it for 100. I'm really looking forward to it!
If you eat good food you feel nourished, body and soul. Snacking, junk food, snatched 'meals', sugary snacks, eating on the hoof, calorie filled takeaways, do not nourish the soul. When the soul is not nourished it fills itself up with junk. And more junk. As you said Lisa, food should not be feared, it should not be a penance, it should not depress you and be your enemy. It should be a celebration of living.
Lots of love, Heather UK, almost back to normal.4 -
I enjoy the KETO food style. I’m not hungry and I am allowed 1800 Calories per my doctors, but rarely go over 1400. I’ve only lost 12 pounds in 2 months but for me that’s still a lot! Going to keep going. Shooting for another 40 pounds to my goal! 30 gone since my highest!

(((Margaret))): Good luck. My kids couldn’t wait to get out of my house and it made me sad back then. Now they live across the country from us and I’d like for them to be a bit closer. :ohwell:
Heather: I appreciate your comments on good food and agree with them whole heartedly. I have food sensitivities that limit some things, but there are plenty of healthy things that taste good without causing weight gain. Portion control is the best tool in my dietary arsenal.
RV Rita: Congratulations on your success!!! :flowerforyou:
Pip: Love your snow photo. We don’t seem to have had much so far this winter, barely a trace where we live. I’ve seen snow across the river in the Washington hills. I don’t see any in the foothills now, but clouds may be hiding some. The high mountains are snow covered.

Lisa - Very well said. I would add that being honest with yourself is one of the most important parts also. I see so many people say I just can't get my weight down the last few pounds. I am logging everything, I don't understand why the scale won't move. If you are using measuring cups and spoons (or even worse, eyeballing your portions) instead of a food scale, or generalizing and logging that you are eating half a medium apple, then you are not being honest with yourself about what you are eating. A medium apple to me is not the same as a medium apple to the next person. However, eating 25 grams of a red delicious apple is the same for everyone and lets you know what you are really consuming so that you can get your calories within the range they need to be in to lose those pounds that "just aren't coming off for no reason".
Just my two cents.

At work and working from the back office and its driving Mary nuts, but need a phone and computer terminal...she can't boss from up there with me back here...
Going to work in the morning too.8 -
Did 30 min HIIT, then on the treadmill for 15 min. The plan for tomorrow is to do a 10MS Carb Burner DVD (I do it in the back of the clubhouse)
Afterwards, went to WalMart since I wanted some soup and shirataki noodles for me. Went to this thrift store that my MIL used to like, got a pair of shorts and a shirt for a little over $2. Then came home to make the grapefruit pie. Then went and laid by the pool and while Vince fixed the dishwasher, I got out of his way by going into the pool. Now he’s working on the printer. What’s the matter, I don’t fully understand. You don’t need a key to get into the pool area any more. I couldn’t figure out how to open the door! My understanding is that this guy had a heart attack in the pool and no one had a key to let someone in to help him. I understand the guy eventually died. I don’t know if too many people know this
M – yes, the mouse is inexpensive. I could just kick myself for forgetting it. It’s really not that much of a big deal to use the laptop. I’m so sorry to hear about the cyst. Thank goodness it’s most likely benign
My thought on cheat days: if you, say, eliminate sugar during the week eventually it turns you off. But when you have it on the weekend, that never happens
Elizabeth – the chickenpox vaccine isn’t as effective as you get older. That’s why it’s recommended you get the Shringex vaccine

Hello ladies! I'm new here.. well, to the message boards. I have been on MFP for awhile now - religiously logging for a little over a year... I've been making changes to my lifestyle/diet/health for about 5 years, but the major changes have been in the past 3 years. I add a new healthy habit to my life every 3 months or so and it's astounding to me how even small changes end up making huge long term differences. I have a lot of weight to lose, but I'm doing it quite gradually. I lose an average of .5-1 lb a week (but only weigh myself monthly). I'm finally starting to get moving again and that's really helped my mental health as well. My only exercise goal is to move 10 minutes a day, and on "better" days I tend to do that 10 minutes 3 or 4 times, which is awesome. On difficult days, having it set at 10 minutes gives me an attainable goal.6

Well the second storm has hit. DD is home early as they closed down the warehouse where she works. Went to Fred Meyer to do weekly shopping and people around here have panicked. Lots of shelves especially bread and milk were empty. It has been snowing since about 1:15 pm. Lots of things like library and YM closing early.
Lisa - If you are wearing the Fitbit on your wrist it will not count steps without a normal arm swing. You can try putting it on your ankle or in your pocket. The PTs at the hospital used to complain because their Fitbits would not work when they were helping patients and using the gait belts.
Rebecca - Whidbey looks a little snowy. Stay warm and cozy.
All of our critters are doing well. Hose froze for horse water but got a new short one that we can bring inside.

Agreed!!
When I start weighing everything with my food scale and sticking to it all the time, 24-hours a day, 7 days a week ... the weight drops off.
I would also add that a lot of people I hear, at work and elsewhere, over estimate their calorie burn. They do something a little more than usual ... like let's stay climbing 5 flights of stairs back up to our office after a fire drill rather than waiting for the lift ... and announce that they must have burned about 500 calories and should be able to eat a caramel slice with lunch today!
When I log my exercise, I tend to round down. Then when I was on a mission to lose weight, I ate about half my exercise calories back. And that seemed to work too.

OK. Now I wait. *sigh.* Did I mention I hate having appointments hanging over me?
So do I ... and this past year has been a real challenge for me because I've had appointments, meetings, etc. hanging over me just about every single day.
I am longing for a week without any appointments, meetings etc.!! But I don't see that in the near future. I've stared booking into March now.Philosophy on cheat days ahead, putting it in a spoiler, so if you're not interested, you don't have to read it. Warning, it's a long one.

Every celebration involves food ... has always puzzled me a little bit. Yeah, I know, it's tradition etc. etc. but I'd rather get together and do something. I get bored very quickly if I've got to sit around a table eating for very long. Even in restaurants, I finish my meal, and I want to leave immediately ... but I've got to sit there and wait to be polite.
Stress eating also puzzles me. Don't other people's stomachs shut down entirely when they get stressed? You can tell when I'm feeling somewhat more relaxed about things because that's when I'll eat more. There is no one-size-fits-all, you just need to choose the path that works for you. I do both.
When I'm losing weight, I plan out what I can eat to reach my 1300 calorie limit, and then I set it on the back burner so to speak and pour myself into other more interesting things. My work. My university. Walking, running, cycling, travelling, etc. etc.
That's what works for me.
