Congratulations @debrakgoogins! Nice work!
@Avidkeo congrats on your win, too! Woot woot!
Another rest day for me. Technically a cross training day but I overdid calf raises while brushing my teeth the other day oops

@debrakgoogins Great job! And considering it looks like you were running in the slush, that's pretty hardcore.3

It was so icy! Twice I just about went down but caught myself. I’ll be so glad when the snow is gone. We don’t have many sidewalks and the ones we do have are skating rinks so all running is on the road with snow banks. Luckily it’s not tourist season so traffic isn’t bumper to bumper.

Total: 52.02 miles
Run notes:
Another ~8.5 mile long run this weekend! I felt really great and wanted to go further, but I talked myself in to following my schedule. Don't want to push things too hard and risk yet another injury! This was the same route I ran last weekend, and almost exactly the same average pace (only 1 sec/mile slower this week). My average HR was lower this week though and the run itself felt easier! Plus I didn't get any terrible blisters this time haha. I am looking forward to finally hitting a double-digit long run next weekend though!
Registered races:
- Excalibur 10 Miler (3/17)
- Wintrust Lakefront 5K (4/13)
- Ravenswood Run 5K (4/28)
- Space Coast Half Marathon (12/01)11 -
How about a monthly question?
What are your current running goals? Do you have a PR your chasing?
And maybe tell me something about you, others may not know.[/i]
...goal, just keep moving to try to keep the joints from stiffening up...because (you may not know....)
with the possible exception of @Tramboman, I am the oldest poster RUNNER on this challenge....
Oh. I corrected that for ya
You edited the wrong word - you should have changed "oldest." Wisest
my her-o is 88. My new goal is to meet her before she’s 90. In Kona. So, “old” is not a protected status here, as a runner. It is, in fact something to treasure and aspire to. (Because running is continually elusive for me).
One of the runners at my last trail race was 81! I looked her up and there is an article on her in our local track club running magazine, about what an amazing person she is to be running at her age - from seven years ago! She teaches water aerobics for seniors.
Oh, and she wasn't last! Her race photo shows her confidently trotting across the finish line.8 -
How about a monthly question?

And maybe tell me something about you, others may not know.
My current/main running goal right now is to build up mileage without re-re-injuring myself. I've noticed all my sfx have been in even-numbered years (2014, 2016, and two in 2018) so at least that's a good omen for this year
My other big goal for the year is to snag a new 5K PR! And hopefully get under the 21 minute mark, but I'll honestly be happy with even a 1 second PR haha.
Two things about me that others may not know:
1a) I am getting my PhD in Physics in May
1b) I hated physics in high school and freshman year of college
2a) I worked in a fruit fly lab for two years during undergrad. My main job was to sex the flies and isolate virgin females for breeding to maintain our genetic stocks
2b) The media we grew the larvae (aka maggots) on was 75% instant mashed potato mix, and I still to this day cannot eat mashed potatoes
PS- @kristinegift I saw you are in the DC area now. I'll be moving there (Bethesda, MD) in June for a post-doc! As a fellow midwesterner, the mild winters are definitely what I'm looking forward to most I'll have to get some intel from you on the best trails in the area once I move
12 -
@Avidkeo yay that sounds like a real win-win!
Well done to everyone getting out there and doing it this weekend.
We're getting dressed for our little local race. Due to having a foreign name and them employing a monkey to put data into computer, I get to run with a bib that reads "Eleanor Hamtis". Kinda ironic for a vegetarian lol. Haven't even managed to persuade the others to get up yet and I'm itching to get out the door and get down there :-D Not excited much. Silly, as my goal is to come last in my AG ;-)
ETA: hit the button before answering the question(s)
My current running goal is to build back up gently from my injury and make sure I don't overdo it. At Easter, we're walking the final stretch of the Portuguese Camino de Santiago from Tui to Santiago, which is a fair bit of walking, so I need to make sure my legs are fit for that.
Then I hope to run our local HM in November and possibly get a PR on that.
Given my verbal diarrhea I'm not sure if there's much anyone doesn't know about me, but as others have said if you want to know just ask lol10 -

Would you mind sharing how old you are?
No, I'm not older, but I'm getting there. I will be turning 60 in August. When I ran 10 years ago, there was an 80 something year old woman who ran every race I entered. She told me she had to stop running marathons when she turned 70. Because of her, my goal is to be able to run a marathon when I turn 80.
8 -
I ran before work yesterday, then immediately had to eat and shower and commute, so no time for an update until now, 26 hours later! 6 miles and my legs felt like garbage. I think it's the shoes I'm wearing, which I got for free from a shoe rep and tried to give a fair shake but the sole is just too firm. The last few recovery runs I've done in this particular shoe has made me feel like total trash. These are going to be relegated to the "wear to work" pile, I think.
I need to go out and do a minimum of 6 miles today, and 12 at max. But I was out really late DD'ing some friends so we'll see how much I accomplish I may try to hit a new trail today too since our rainy forecast has given way to sun/clouds instead and it's not unbearably cold out (yet).

Now admit, you are a young 66. You are active and that takes a good 20 years off you. Spy as ever and brilliant.5 -
Ahhhh it was so good to race again :-) Nice and cool and cloudy, very relaxed and friendly atmosphere which is why I love small, local and charity races. It was rather disconcerting as the place announced as the start was actually the finish. So we were all herded about half a kilometre down the seafront at a jog to the start line (extra warm-up there I guess), then the race came back the way we'd come and did two loops of the shopping streets. My husband and daughter ran about half then slowed to a walk for a bit while I continued running. Wasn't aware of pushing it until I realised there was around 500 metres left to the finish line and let rip. However, my official time was 18.44 which gives a pace of something crazy like 2 minutes per kilometre faster than the pace I train at. Legs might be a little sore tomorrow, oops don't tell the physio!
I failed to come last in my AG, was 12th of 16. My daughter is actually pretty chuffed because although she walked half of it she was still 9th of the19 teenaged girls. Hopefully this will motivate her to actually train a bit for the others (it's a series of 3, 3km today, 5km next month and 7km in April).

Yay @eleanorhawkins sounds like a lot of fun!
I went out this morning for a short 3k recovery run. Still getting pains in my hips - it band - and a little in my knee - it band- so kept it short and got out the foam roller. That hurts but hopefully a good hurt. Had a kitty helper - he loves to play with my hair lol
My new phone is a fancy dual camera thing - 24 megapixel front camera. Its quite high tech and I'm still figuring it out. It takes beautiful pics but they just look a bit overprocessed to my eye. Built in beautification I think.9 -
And just got sent this, montage of me and my friend on the run lol

Well my 100 mile challenge is starting to feel more of a struggle and yet I feel like I'm getting faster too!
I just passed the half way mark this morning with a 13.35km outting! I've still got 70km to do and 11days in which to do it!
I'm using "first day to 5k" program on www.podrunner.com
2nd - 10.44km (w4, w3, w2)
3rd - 10.31km (w4, w3, w2)
4th - 1.84 km (short due to leggings being too big!)
5th - 3.84km (w4)
6th - 4.08km (w4)
7th - 4.11km (w4)
8th - 4.18km (w4)

10th - 11.18km (w5-1, w4, we)
11th - 4.08km (w5 d1)

15th- 4.18km (w5 d1)

Planning on a 10km on 11th may, trying to aim for <75 mins. (Best so far was 1 18 so 3 mins off is doable right?)

What phone is it? You can adjust a lot of that in the settings. And if you are used to older phone pics they will tend to look over processed because new phones are *almost* as good as real cameras. Most people can't tell the difference between my phone and DSLR landscapes.1 -
@Avidkeo Nice win ma'am and sweet pic montage!
@greyparks206 great run through people traffic!
@debrakgoogins Well done ma'am!
@eleanorhawkins Yay for racing again!
@Butterchop WTG on the distance PR!
Went out for 18 yesterday, phone had issues with Spotify and Strava. Endomondo said 11.8 vs Strava's 11.3. Took a spill at about mile 11, didn't left foot up high enough in a curb cut, hit knee and where my phone was strapped to my arm and obtained a temporary running badge on my knee and shoulder was kinda sore.
Made it about another 1/3 to 1/2 mile, then pulled up limping. Called wife and had her come get me 🙄. Ibuprofen and an ice bath later and everything felt better and not quite as swollen. Nap time with the wife and then midnight bowling for 3 hours rounded out last night. To bed at 0300 then up at 0900 for today's run to keep the streak going.
Just over 4 miles this morning at a pace which really surprised me given how the knee looked today. Being empaneled for Grand Jury tomorrow😖 and have TRX class after my run in the morning. Will be up early for about 6ish I hope before class but we'll see how much time I have.

Way behind again with all the posts so hope everyone had a good weekend. Lovely weather here so yesterday enjoyed a good day out at the zoo with the family for sons birthday. Lots of walking. Got out for a jog this morning, still slow but longer sections between walk breaks. 3 miles covered. Total this month 19 miles.11

Nominal February mileage goal: 190 miles
Real Goals: Train well toward Boston. Work the February races into the training plan smoothly. Remain uninjured, even if it means cutting back on planned mileage or races.
Today's notes – Still winging it with the training plan. Last weekend, the plan called for 20-22 miles on Saturday, then 100 minutes on Sunday. I didn't do the 20-22 miles because I raced. But I made up for it by running 20 miles yesterday, with road conditions that made it a tough 20 miles. So today I decided to run that 100 minutes. The theory is, the 100 minute easy run the day after a 20 mile long run trains you to run on tired legs.
I got better weather than yesterday, 26°F (-3°C) with 9 mph E wind. Minimal ice, just one stretch of uncleared sidewalk and a few spots on the shoulders. Set out to run pretty much the same route as last Sunday, with challenging hill in mile 5, and a steep down reminiscent of the drop at Lower Newton Falls around mile 10. That drop is good practice running downhill smoothly when I'm not still fresh; I'll need that skill at mile 15 of Boston.
The last couple of miles, I noticed some calf aches that were reminiscent of running the late miles of a marathon. Wasn't worried, because it was in the meat of the calf and probably just needed electrolytes. Chugged my Nuun, and after I finished and got some good stretching in it didn't bother me. Other than that, I didn't notice anything resembling tired legs.
I did manage to hold an average pace only a little faster than what I used to consider the fast end of my easy range. Looking at the HR data, I conclude that my easy range is a bit faster now, at least in good weather.
The learning experience thing is, I got a sore spot on the back of my neck. It felt a little like sunburn, but the probable cause was uncovered skin between the hat and the neck buff, with sweat and cold wind applied. This is not the first time this has happened. In the past, I just soldiered through. Now, I'm thinking maybe I should try some vaseline on my neck when the weather is like this and ensuring I'm bundled all the way would make me too warm. Of course, I may well forget this by the next time weather conditions make it an issue.

Oldest poster/age group notes: I'm not in the running for oldest at 63. Yesterday I ran a few miles with a recently aged up 60 year old. He asked me how old I was, with the obvious motivation of knowing when I'll age out of his age group. I'm just a bit faster than he is; when I aged up to 60, he started winning the 55-59 age group in races we were both in.
Run a marathon at 70 or 80? I don't know. I want to keep running Boston as long as I can run marathons and BAA keeps letting me come back. That opinion may change with time, but that's how I see it right now. I'm thinking New York will be one and done for me, but I'm already thinking I need to research what it would take for me to time qualify for Chicago. After that, I don't know what I'll want to do.14 -
@workaholic_nurse That knee looks pretty bad. Glad you weren't hurt any worse.
@MobyCarp You amaze me with the paces and races you run. Have you been a runner all of your life?0
