WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR MARCH 2019

Good morning all - I'm a 60+ woman, still working at a challenging and demanding job, married, 1 adult son who is currently home with us as he and girlfriend are renovating the home he was raised in.
My back-story: At age 60 I hit an all time high weight of 216# inactive and out of shape pounds. Parents, grandparents, and brother diabetic and I decided that I had to make some changes or die early and miserable. Joined MFP, started attending a Women's Walk Run program and took charge of my life. Over the course of 2 years I went from not being able to run a full minute to completion of seventeen half-marathons and a two years of full Road Race series. I lost 60 pounds, made some wonderful friends, and completely changed my lifestyle. Kept the weight off and the activity up for an additional 2+ years.
This summer I was bitten by a brown recluse, ended up in the hospital for a week and off my feet for a month - jumped back in to activity too quickly and blew out my knee. Gained weight (grrr...), decreased activity, sliding back into bad habits. Back on MFP - Moving again. Scales moving in the right direction now.
Apologize for the novella, bu t would love to join this group. Suzu18 -
Happy March to All!
Thank you Barbie for keeping us going.
Sharon: I love your posts! You have such a lovely way with words.
Rori: Congrats on your one year of retirement.
Kim: So glad your embroidery business is booming and wishing you good luck on getting your machines in top shape.
Kylia: Poor baby Aubrey. Continued prayers and good wishes. She has gone through so much in her short time here.
Kylia: Also, helping your SnL with the snow at 3:30 AM was such a kind and generous gesture.
Karen: Helping your GS with his writing is fine! Even though he is very, very smart, he still needs instruction and that is what you were doing. Now he can use what he has learned from your help in future writing projects.
Woke up to find plastic storage containers on the kitchen table. DH had decided to go through all my containers and rearrange them. The ones on the table had no mates. I told DH that I appreciated what he had done but I am sure it won't last long as I tend to just throw them into the cabinet. This was before 6 AM.

Stress Buster for Machka- Deep breathing, walks/runs outside always serve me well; but sometimes I need to hit things. Years ago, my husband had a medicine bag ( a boxing punching bag). I used to punch and kick that thing quite often. Loud grunts and sometimes shouts accompanied each punch and afterward I always felt amazing. Chopping wood or throwing an axe/hatchet at a target accomplishes the same thing.Stress relief- Itsy, Bitsy Spider....when I start getting overwhelmed I sing it! The customers laugh when I do it at work, but even one time does the trick!
Good ones!!
There are definitely days I could chop a lot of wood! And I wonder what my work colleagues would think if I suddenly broke out into Itsy, Bitsy Spider!

Friday -- today was an unexpectedly incredibly busy day at work.
I had a plan. I was going to finish up a small instruction manual I'm writing, then move on to organising what I had to do in March. A fairly relaxing start to the month and nice way to end the week.
I finished the instruction manual, and then got called into solving another problem which was complicated and took an unexpectedly long time, and then wrote a quick instruction sheet for that problem should it arise again, and only got a little way through organising March. March is going to be pretty full-on.
Then my husband and I went to the symphony this evening. That can be relaxing, and I did relax a bit, but I'm always slightly on edge taking him anywhere. Sometimes he's really good ... almost back to normal. Other times, not so much.
Program
Beethoven: Coriolan, Overture
Mozart: Violin Concerto No 5, Turkish
Richard Meale: Cantilena Pacifica
Beethoven: Symphony No 1
The two Beethoven pieces were incredible!!
Today's temperature reached 29C (84F), and this is the forecast for the week ... 37C is 98.6F

March already! The weeks seem to be flying by. Thanks to Barbie for starting us off on another month.
Went out for a meal last night with some old work colleagues. We've been doing ‘this’ the first Thursday after pay day for the past 30 years! different restaurants of course. Some restaurants have closed, some friends have left York, sometimes some folks can’t make it, others can, no matter, we’ll keep going, having a laugh, remembering old times, good times, sad times - friends and memories, so precious.
I keep in touch regularly with two of them, the others I see only when out for a meal. I don't go on too many of them as I don't like eating late in the evening. Having said that I enjoyed it last night, I had mushroom stroganoff (could have done with a bit more stroganoff and a bit less rice )
Barbara can't believe the state of the road, very scary!
Thought I had caught up, forgot it was a new month, but need to get off the computer!
Take care everyone
Love Viv York UK5 -
Barbara thank you for the thread.
Kyla agree about the singing.
My voice lessons are paying off I hit a high A in choir the other night without strain. That is my goal to learn to sing again without straining.
Pounding are creeping on and I started eating bread again. Need to nix the bread.

Hey bit$”es, it’s Friday!!8 -
Suzu - nice to meet you. I started 'running' in Jan 2018. Did the c25k app. I now run 5k a few times a week, but I am very, very slow. My husband can walk beside me!
My son and DDIL completed a half marathon last Sunday, but I'm sure I will never achieve that. I could perhaps manage a 10k one day.
I'm sure you'll get back to fitness. My left knee has been my bugbear since I was 16. I have a patella problem. I do a lot of muscle strengthening exercises. My DDIL blew her knee last year and was off for a while. It just about held up this time. My son has every sort of joint and Achilles problem!
Are we crazy, or what?
I do love it though.
I wanted to run today, but my legs have other ideas. I have done something vigorous on my legs every day this week, so they have decided they need a rest. I am 69.

Suzu, You joined the group just by posting and telling us about yourself. I found these women when I was 62 and they helped me reach my goal weight and keep it there. They have supported, encouraged, and inspired me. I hope you will keep coming back.
Barbie from NW WA3 -
Good morning Ladies! Happy March!
Thank you Barbie for providing us with a fresh start.
Okie in the TX Hill Country3 -
Happy March ladies!
Barbie, thank you for getting us going this month. Spring is around the corner. Spring is around the corner. Shiver, rinse and repeat, lol.
Tracey - Oh my word girl, looking at your cold February stats made my already cold hands feel even colder. I know we've had a colder than usual Jan & Feb here in SW WA State - I saw a prediction for a warmer and drier than normal summer here.
Hey ladies, Daylight Savings time next weekend! My internal clock never changed last fall so let's see if I'm on schedule this time.
Kelly - glad you had your talk with your guys. I think you're a bit like me - a natural born caretaker/manager and take pride in keeping all those balls in the air. But when the light came on for me that I was a very tired and unappreciated "mom" to Dh and the dogs, I was really angry and had "the talk" - I was angrier at myself for not speaking up for myself all those years. I never was one to nag - I knew my DH would ignore. So he would get the message when I'd blow up, lol.
Dana - glad to see your smiling face! Thanks for the pix of Jessica and the kids. Wow, what a mess. Hope that's the last hurricane for her for many years.
Barbara AHMOD - wow, bet the road engineers are busy trying to figure out how to fix 101. I-5 had some flood damage in our area in 2007, was closed for several days (nothing like what you are having) and the only way to get north/south was 101 (not good) and Hwy 7 -- miles and miles out of their way. Our county would not allow the big rigs on our already fragile county roads so detouring thru town was not an option.
So were you cut off from town/getting in and out of the general area? Glad Costco and fuel trucks are making it in. My concern would be getting the fire trucks and aid cars through/hospital access.
Kim - glad the embroidery is taking off and good for you knowing how to keep your machines going.
Machka - sometimes looking at those lists of how to reduce stress just seem to cause more stress I think.
I don't envy you the hot day coming up, thankfully a bit of a cool-down. Beautiful beach.
Rebecca - hope you get on top of your LS, navigating the medical system is challenging to say the last, and you have many layers to go through. (((HUGS))). Glad you were able to have some quality time communicating with Owain. Did the dishwasher get fixed OK? Renting vs. owning.... yes, a person is limited as to what he/she can do for decorating or remodeling but the plumbing and electrical and major appliances go haywire, call the landlord. Some day when we really can't keep up this place, renting looks like a great option - if the landlord is attentive.
I better close for now before I lose this post. Time to get a walk in. Happy Friday!

Thank you Barbie!
Like Kim below is a duplicate of what I posted last night to February. Will post the monthly review later... gotta git up off this chair!
Just skimming...
Sharon motorcycling up to the Arctic Circle? WOW. The farthest I ever rode was on the back of Joe's bike from the East Bay to Tahoe, and back, and let me tell you even that little gave me serious Iron Butt!
Machka love your first bike pic! I prefer my birthstone aquamarines clear not frosted To Barbie's list and Margaret's "Laugh!" I'd add "Sing out loud!" The louder the more stress you're breathing out. Then if you sound like me you'll end up laughing at yourself too.!
Yvonne the first time I was given an unasked for senior discount was quite a facer. I don't feel more than 19 or 30 inside, who is that little old lady in the mirror?
Allie I love that Alfie visits at your DFIL's facility. Sure wish they'd hire you both!
Michele "osteoporosis has gotten so much better" Hooray! You give me hope!
pip glad to see you're feeling better!
Kylia ((hugs)). You've really been through it. Prayers for Aubrey and her family continue.

Machka - I was stressed in 2017 so badly that I was making myself sick. A friend of mine that knew all that was going on and is quite faithful made me promise to start reading a devotional book she had given me. I did it as promised without any real internalizing. Gradually I started reading the Bible verses that went with it and then started a Gratitude Journal. It really helped me, and sometimes it was just taking that few minutes to myself that helped.
I agree with you about social media, I think it’s what you do on Social media that makes a difference, if you read all the news and tragedies it will make you more stressed but if you read positive stories and stay in contact with friends and loved ones it’s a positive experience that helps calm us.
Kim - it’s great that your embroidery business is growing, hopefully it continues.
Karen in Virginia - I think that is the kind of help your Grandson should have had all along.
Sharon - what a lovely memory, thank you for sharing.
Kylia - you have so much going on in your life. Hugs
Yvonne - I was asked if I wanted the seniors discount when I was around 44 for the first time. I couldn’t believe it.
I am taking my daughter to run errands today. Her husband’s car is waiting on repairs. While using her car he was rear ended so hers will be in the shop afterward.
They work opposite days so that they never have to pay for childcare, they are both looking forward to being off together this Sunday, it is the first time since the end of January. Their schedule is one reason why I watch the kids to run overnight so often. Couples need time together to maintain the relationship.
I lost one pound in February, at least it’s a loss and not a gain, but I need to get at it. I did walk 55 miles in the house doing Leslie Sansone videos.

Barbie: Happy March! Thank you for the new thread! I love your word for 2019, tenacity. We all need it to succeed.
Rori: Happy Anniversary of your retirement!
Rita: Great goals!
Kim: I’m delighted that your embroidery business is doing well.
Karen in VA: As you’re looking at medicare plans, be on the lookout for those that pay for a gym membership along with prescriptions and doctor visits. Also look for a dental plan. Ours adds an additional fee to the medicare coverage and is worth every penny we pay.
Sharon near Seattle: What lovely memories you have of childhood and your friend, Larry. :flowerforyou:
(((Heather))) I am so sorry about your plugged-up ear. I’ve lived though that more than once and it is awful.
Machka: I admire the way you’re handling the need for exercise balanced with resting your body. You’re giving yourself the best chance of regaining your former level of fitness. :flowerforyou:
(((Barbara))): I’m delighted that Freddies and Conoco have been able to restock gas and food. At least you will be able to get around locally and buy food.
Yoga today with my favorite teacher and I’m looking forward to a possible riding lesson on Sunday. My energy levels have improved a bit and I am grateful for that.

Hi all! It’s sunny today in our corner of Missouri and it feels wonderful! Only 24 degrees but we will take it!
Enjoy reading all of your posts especially the suggestions for activity!!
Do any of you battle hypothyroidism? After battling a large lymphoma on my thyroid (successfuly!) I am left with hypothyroidism and I don’t think my med is correct yet! My metabolism still seems slow. Which may just come with age, idk.
Every one have a great rest of your day!!!4 -
Hi all! I love reading messages in this group but have not said anything before this. I am 55 and actively trying to lose a lot of weight.....it's working, I'm down 30 pounds since December 9 when 311 absolutely frightened me. So far, my loss has all been dieting and I am trying to find a way to exercise. I am open to suggestions. I use a cane and am unstable walking outside or getting on/off cardio machines. I can not find a local decent indoor pool Any ideas?8
