I live in WV and my grandfather said the first one the last time I saw him. LOL. When I first started to lose people were concerned. I get it because I used to have an ED. Now that I've been maintaining for a year I'm starting to get nasty comments. Like that I have "skinny genes" (no, I was obese in college and chubby through all of middle/high school, remember?) I was told I look like an addict (the only people who are thin here.) I was told I was showing off by wearing a swimsuit...everyone else was wearing a swimsuit in the picture, I just happened to be the smaller one.31 -

Wow! They are pretty mean. Tell them at least you have your teeth.40 -
I lost 30-40 lbs. several years back and started a new job. After a few weeks one of my new co-workers asked if I was a cheerleader in high school, and said something about me being naturally thin. I told her of my recent weight loss and she wouldn't believe me, and kept pestering me to bring in a 'before' photo. (This was before cell phones.) It kind of drove me nuts that all she wanted was to see how fat I really had been.
I'm totally pear shaped, so when I lose weight it's mostly from the waist up. As I get closer to my ideal weight people ask if I'm done and when I say I'm not, they ask where the extra weight is going to come from. (Uh, I can turn around and show you...)
Also, when I lost weight before it made me really uncomfortable when other people commented on how my body looked. One day some of my husband's family members were hiking up a hill and my husband's uncle, who was further down the hill behind me, commented loud enough for me to hear to my husband that my butt looked great and if his wife's butt looked that great he would buy her a new car. It was so strange and creepy.37 -
Worst: In laws. Every time I see them they make backhanded compliments and say they can't understand why I would want to lose weight (the whole be healthy thing doesn't register as a reason to them). I've lost 95 pounds in about a year. This past week mother-in-law asked, what do you weigh now? I finally had enough and retorted, if I were gaining weight instead of losing would you ask me my weight? Shut her up fast, but still very annoying.
Best: You look healthier (co-worker I rarely see in person, a few months into my journey).
Good comeback! But seriously, what is it about weight loss that makes people think they can ask stuff like that? Did you ask her how much SHE weighs?14 -
I've been focusing a lot more on heavy lifting this year and I'm by no means an Olympian power lifter but I can hold my own in the newbie category! But the more weight that I lose the less capable people (parents and in-laws) seem to see me...as if continually lifting heavier and heavier things ISN'T the reason I'm getting thinner looking in the first place haha!
"Oh you're lifting that 45 pound plate? That looks too heavy for you and you're going to hurt yourself!"
"...That's just my warm up. I can bench almost 70 now."
"You're arms are too skinny! You're going to break them so put that down!"
And my PET PEEVE is the #1 thing people respond to me with when I mention that I'm in a heavy lifting program:
"Oh. Just don't go looking like a man."
I MEAN COME ON I don't think I could make myself look "manly" if I tried!29 -
“You’re losing your butt.”
“You’re disappearing”
Oh and any comments that belittle the progress I made.
“I can probably fit into your jeans.” Etc16 -
The worst comments I have received have included:
Coworker: Did you eat breakfast today? What did you have? Don't forget to eat lunch.
Another coworker: Do you need help? Do you think you have anorexia? Are you eating enough?
And yet another coworker: Are you okay?
Me: yes? I'm fine.
Coworker: you have lost a lot of weight.
Me: I just had a baby... it's pretty normal to lose weight after.
Coworker: well you also look pale.
Me: this is the color I always am...
(This whole conversation was super frustrating because I got up early before work that morning, went for a run, and I was feeling great. Until finding out others think I look bad).
I don't think my coworkers are ill intentioned, but their comments were super frustrating. I had to have a conversation with my boss regarding all of the comments I was receiving and how uncomfortable they were making me. It seems to be resolved now.
(For the record, I am at a healthy weight and yes I eat, no I'm not anorexic).
Lol my doctor did the whole are you okay? You’re looking pale, but I know you like makeup. Uh, thanks this is the color I always am. Felt insulted because this doctor was a different race than I am lol. I know she meant well though lol.12 -

I'll look any damned way I want. OMG I would rage on these people. lol

They don't say anything, they just lose more weight and pretend nothing changed and they want you to think you've put on weight11

That happened to me, too. I've also had a couple of women at the school gates who no longer say hello since I've lost the weight (46 lbs and counting). It's disappointing but you look fab18 -
When I was battling (with?) my eating disorder I tried to follow some kind of schedule which included a lots-of-veggies-plus-couscous or something-lunch.
At some point one of my classmates who was trying to lose weight asked me: how's losing weight going on for you??
And I was like: what? I'm not trying to lose weight... Why do you think so? (at that point I tried to eat a healthy schedule which I liked, without any binges... That was my priority... Losing weight was like a far away dream)
She said: "well, you're always eating so healthy: vegetables and couscous and stuff!"
Am I not allowed to like my veggies anymore or what?!22 -
I've had some nice compliments like, "you look great" or "tell me your plan because you are killing it". However, I've also gotten quite a few backhanded compliments like "wow I can see what you're supposed to look like now" and " I'm proud of you. you want to loose that weight for your health before it causes you problems".18
-
“Did you get a tan? You look different.”10

My PhD study buddy, the only person other than my partner who saw me literally every day during the bulk of my weight loss (and who, because he saw me so often relative to the speed of loss, didn't register that I was getting slimmer): "You look extra sexy today ... I don't know why ..."25

After months of losing weight due to severe anaemia, my bones were jutting out of my hips and I was so miserable and weak I could barely walk. I received the comment 'you look so good!' From a lot of people who hadn't seen me in ages. I wanted to cry.
From that day on I never comment on people's weightloss without prompting. just incase they have a tape worm.53 -
As nice as it is for people to notice your physical weight loss, it feels good to be told you’re looking happier, it’s as much a mental journey as it is physical. Too deep?44

I feel like if someone said that to me (in the past or now) I'd get pretty angry about it! Even though it's true, that just sounds rude to me...wow!
The whole "I can see what you're supposed to look like now" is freaky and rude too! I have had a few of those weirdo backhanded compliments too...mostly about me being small boned or narrow or some junk, which isn't even true honestly.10 -
"supposed to look like?? What does that mean? I know what they're saying but I don't think there is a way we're supposed to look. According to what standard is someone supposed to look?15

I've had both the back-handed as well as the nice compliments. But my favorite back-handed one was from my MIL after I hit maintenance. As she gave me a hug, she whispered into my ear "You need to gain some of that weight back. You're too bony to hug." For the record, I was right in the center of the 'Healthy' BMI range.15

I think most people mean well but don't know what to say, so end up make things more complicated by trying to be funny or saying too much. That said, there are definitely snarky people.
I've lost weight a couple of times and most people have been very nice with their comments. However, the first time, after I'd lost about 23lbs and was comfortably in size 12 jeans, a family member who I was clearly a similar size to, if not smaller than, asked if I'd like some post-baby-weight jeans she was getting rid of. I think she wanted me to ask the size of the jeans so that she'd know my size. I thanked her for the offer and told her, truthfully, that I'd just bought new jeans so didn't need them. She honestly seemed miffed that I didn't take them.23 -
Don't lose anymore weight6

So, I am a middle school counselor. When you work with middle schoolers, you had better have thick skin and good sense of humor. About a month ago, the yearbook staff was in the library putting the final touches on the yearbook. I stopped to catch a sneak peek of the yearbook, and I saw a pic of myself teaching at the beginning of the school year in one of the collages. I said, "Oh, wow!" One of my students said, "Oh yeah, that's right. You were fat at the beginning of the year!"
Ha ha ha! No, I wasn't offended. He realized what he said, and immediately apologized. The look on his face was priceless though.48 -

I'm sorry, but I think I would have politely told her to kiss my size 12 you-know-what!2 -
When the weather is nice.. wasn't wearing any sweater today.. co-worker noted .. "did you loose some weight?" Was that why I see you walking a lot lately. Smh

People say "Take care of yourself." as if I do not. I have never heard that when I was obese.14

Just got this on the weekend (Blurted out) "Hey you look amazing! Wait, you're not sick are you?? Oh sorry, I don't mean to be rude but my wife told me I'm always putting my foot in my mouth". LOL he was genuine, definitely not being rude. I don't stress about what people say. Yes, some people may be jealous/uncomfortable with my weight loss but I don't wait to see if people will say "Hi" to me. I just strike up the conversation, everybody realizes I'm still the same person and they see past my size. (this is what I like to think anyway!)18

Just the other day we had a breakfast at work. As I reached for a hard earned doughnut, the man behind me said "now now, you don't want to ruin all of your hard work". I couldn't believe it!
By contrast another co-worker said "you must be exercising more. you look very strong" that was my favorite26 -

Personally, I would rather not get any comments on my weight.
Me too! I’ve only lost 24lbs and have 160 or so more to go but I did have a dance mom comment that I looked like I lost weight and looked good, and my sister has commented that I looked good too but I’d still rather just people keep their comments to themselves because it’s my life and journey not theirs10 -

I'd like to punch donut dude. Ugh.
I had that almost exact thing said to me. I was in a convenience store getting a donut for me and my husband and ran into an old friend. She looked quite a bit heavier than in the past, not that it matters, but she said, "You don't want to undo everything you've accomplished!" WTF - I ended up talking to her in great detail about counting calories and boring her to death and I wanted to not-so-gently suggest she try it herself, but I'm not that mean...17 -

Wait until you've lost 100. Those same people will be losing their minds telling you to stop.11
