Bananas – I let mfp set my calories for me, based on ½ lb loss and low activity, and then log the activity and eat back between 25 and 50 percent. I agree that the calorie count for activity can be way off…

Lisa V – losing weight is not a straight line down, DO NOT let it get to you. You may plateau, you may even gain a little bit, but when you look at the progress over 3 + months you will lose weight.
Mllegordon – I’m not sure how old you are but we range from just 50 to mid 80’s, I would think you would be able to relate to some of us; and maybe you can help guide the youngsters.

Glad to hear there is a wide range of ages in this MFPs group. But not so glad that we seniors are STILL DIETING. I'm 71 and no stranger to dieting. It seems like I've been doing it my whole life. But if I don't watch my weight I will gradually and stealthily gain the pounds. So, here I am in my golden years, following another weight loss plan. I know everything that needs to be done regarding food choices but when I'm not on a plan, I lose it. Hopefully with this community, I will be able to learn habits that will stay with me whether I'm counting calories or not.4

Mllegordon - the ultimate goal is to stop dieting and make the lifestyle changes to keep us each healthy, maybe different choices of food, and/or different quantities of food, more activity, new skills for dealing with stress, loneliness, boredom. I expect to still be checking in the week i die. this is a new lifestyle.

Hello everyone: Its almost spring and I am trying to get motivated. I went to my Planet Fitness gym and was disgusted with myself when I saw myself in the mirror. I know what I have to do. Daily exercise of some kind and log my food journal. It really does keep you accountable. I am semi retired and don't have a job right now so it seems to challenge me more. I am trying to keep busy with projects around the house and plan to get rid of a lot of stuff on my June 1 yard sale. How does everyone stay motivated?1

Snowflake Quick note re UR H’s flu. Had a similar flu-cold about 6 weeks ago, as did a couple of friends. 1 or 2 days of chills, fever then a dry cough that lasted 6 weeks. Dropped in at drs Thurs. night, he told me a viral tracheal bronchitis had been in the community last month. Never heard of this, but we all had same symptoms and lingering cough. He advised to stay hydrated & lozenges. No drugs, won’t make a diff. Also suggested getting a script for Tamiflu, keeping on hand at home for next time. You have to take at onset. Have you guys been hanging out with folk from the Big Smoke?🥵

Katla - thank you. He did have a terrible fever, I don’t have a thermometer in the house but I have never felt anyone that hot. Riding Arrow was a workout for you? Is Arrow the horse of your friends that was upset with you? Did you two resolve the issue?
Lisa - I can see the romance in your carnival adventure looking back to myself at 18. Sorry you ended up with a broken nose. My long time babysitter when my girls were young was the daughter of a carnival worker, he came through town met the woman she knows as Mom when she was 1. They married and had another daughter, found out he wasn’t who she thought he was when he was arrested and jailed for a murder he had committed. To adopt the now little girl, she had to post in newspapers across the country for three months searching for her. When no one came forward she was able to legally adopt her.
Ginny - I am like that walking outside as well, when I get going I really enjoy it. It’s the getting going part that gets me.

Lenora - I cant imagine not being able to drive. It was terribly hard on my Mother when her licence was taken away. She lived out in the country and I will swear until my dying breath the loneliness sped up her Alzheimer’s. Since she has been in the nursing home the disease seems to have slowed its progress. She is very social and I have been told by several people that she is a joy to have there.
Rebecca - putting Legos back into original sets would be very interesting indeed. I bet it requires lots of patience.
Felicia - What a handsome couple they make! nice setting for the picture as well.
Bananasandoranges - I am 5’5 and find I don’t really lose unless I am in the green by about 100-150. I have mine set to 1200 calories a day and that Is what MFP gives me to lose .5, 1 or 2 lbs a week. I think right now I have it set to 1lb. That’s interesting about the calorie burn, maybe that is why the 100-150 works for me.
Kate - I love your socks. I want to learn to knit so I can try to make socks and mittens. I have all of my grandmothers old patterns.
My daughter was hospitalized when she was 18 for an untreated UTI it almost made her lose a kidney. She had been treated for one and was going to cadet camp 3 provinces away. She didn’t tell me the prescription hadn’t worked. When she first went to camp she was a sail instructor and thought the pain in her back was from being in a boat and not used to it. She ended up in a hospital in Ontario for almost a week with the doctors saying one minute I should come and the next saying she was turning around. After the first 48 hours she was on the mend. She got nicknamed Kidney Girl and has that embroidered in her Camp Hoodie from that summer. It’s also the summer she met her now fiancé.
Karen in NY - I’m so happy you enjoyed yourself. My eldest daughter suffers terribly from social anxiety, I am going to share your conversation starters. Those are awesome.

Lanette - I look back to my teen years too when I see young people making some questionable decisions. It helps me understand them and not criticize. I don’t look at my early 20’s, I married at 18, three months shy of my 19th birthday. My husband bought a bottle of champagne for us to share but we did it in the privacy of our hotel room as I wasn’t legal age yet. Funny how you could marry but not drink. I had my first daughter when I turned 20. Looking back there were probably some stupid decisions made, but I wouldn’t change it.
I’m going to watch that video shortly.
Rodger stayed home from work today, he is not as bad as he was, but still not 100%. It’s been a long boring weekend. The sun is out today and it’s calling for snow the rest of the week, so I’m going to get out for a walk this afternoon.
I’m hoping that the cheque for my election work is in as well. I have a few things I need to buy.
I have read 2 of the 3 books that the lady from the job gave me this weekend. I need to read one more and then do some studying on some other things she told me to look at.
I hope that all of this focus pays off.

Oh Tracy, he has boxes of sets he's yet to put together, plus he used the boxes for instructions and extra stickers. Some of his sets are large, ($200 or more), and the boxes are well made so he used them for other stuff. He has many Chinese Lego sets, and their instructions are bound nicely, its like a fancy coffee table book. He is one amazing you collector!
Moving is gonna be so much fun! Not!😁

Lisa. I have a very similar carnival story, in early 80’s. Romance and the carnival, I worked the birthday joint, my boyfriend was a wheelman (gambling games). Funny things we do when young. When I look back now, I loved the language of the carnys, they had old slang for everything. I also loved all the stories and families that ran businesses for generations.

hi ladies - I hardly ever post, but I read everything. you all are so inspiring!
I've had a lot of stress this month and my food intake shows it... but I am still exercising pretty much everyday, so that's a bonus! I have gained 3 lbs since last weigh in, however. Oh well. Although it's disappointing, I know it's just part of the journey.
We've had a lot of bad news in the past month. My husband's aunt died (he's the executor), my MIL had a stroke (my husband is POA), another surgery for me (I'm so scared) coming up next week, both our cars broke down.. and so much similar stress in the past 8 months... it's never-ending. I guess it's lucky that I'm keeping any new lifestyle routines going - and I'm proud that I'm doing it. I read your posts every 1-2 days and they keep me moving and pushing forward.

Oh my @b4leaving - that's a lot going on at once. Good job keeping up with exercise. You can stay on track. Minor setbacks don't ruin everything. You should be very proud of keeping new routines going. Keep it up. And it does seem that this group is pretty open to folks sharing frustrations and being supportive.2

[Rori - please tell us you have someone who can drive you in case of emergencies and someone who can come in a do so short-term caregiving/shopping/meal prep if you aren't able to be mobile for a little bit.
Ummm, not exactly. No close friends nearby, tho in a pinch there are a niece and a couple of neighbors who would help out. Also, DH is registered with Comfort Keepers, (on call home health aids) and it did cross my mind to call them this past weekend. Instead, I ordered groceries online, which was the one task I was really dreading. A bit pricey, but well worth it for special situations like ours. Fortunately, I'm a quick healer. We made it out to get Mars home, and I'm more mobile everyday. Xrays tomorrow and PT has been ordered. I also ordered the audiobook "Women Rowing North" and can't wait to get into it. Thanks for the recommendation.

I like all the stretching suggestions. Have any of you ever used a foam roller? I have very tight IT bands (the ligaments along the sides of your thighs). The foam roller helps with releasing some of the very stubborn tight spots on legs, back and neck. I used to cry when I first started. Now, it hurts, but in a good way.

I take it one day at a time and do what I need to do just for today. I walk a lot and listen to podcasts and audio books for entertainment to keep me walking longer. I go to line dance classes twice a week. Other people go to other kinds of organized exercise (Zumba, yoga, tai chi, etc.). I read this thread every day and read books about health and creating good habits. Being retired provides lots of time to be active and burn calories.

Felcia-thanks for the yoga routine tip. I have some books on yoga but they are a bit intimidating to figure out a good, basic routine to start with, so I was just doing some random poses. Printed off one of the routines and will try tomorrow.
I have to admit--reading how some of you can respond to every post is intimidating! When I get home from work to check on this thread I read so much that is good and that touches my heart in terms of the things you are struggling with. I also enjoy the humor. Maybe I will catch on to a better way to respond--but you are all helping me everyday!
I had a good day. Actually got three separate exercise periods in-treadmill before work for 30 minutes, walked for 30 minutes on my lunch hour, and took a 20 minute walk before dinner. Currently have 15,500 steps in. I am just making myself move more and the more I move the more I want to move. Somedays I can't get as much in (work can get in the way!), but I am finding I can fit more in than I ever thought.
I had used MFP just for logging food in the past, but this time when I came back I thought I would check out the Community and see what that was about. I never dreamed there would be so much information and so much support. I didn't even understand the whole eating exercise calories and paying attention to net calories. It has made a tremendous difference. Hoping to notice a difference on scale tomorrow, but have noticed in last few days a definite difference in clothes.
Hope everyone ends their day (or starts it depending on where you are) on a good note.

Ways to stay motivated every day: Tiny actions, trigger strategies, small choices, routines/habits so I don’t get caught without some protein when I’m hungry. I am not looking too far down the road at a big goal like lose 20#s, run a marathon, bike to work. I’m just making small choices one step at a time. It is not all or nothing, it’s one food choice at a time and one step at a time—. Reading success stories and journaling are also really motivating to me.
These strong wise women share the small NSVs and cheer me up, and inspire me just by checking in with them.

There are almost 600 new replies here since I've been on, hard to keep up.
I guess the biggest thing happening with me is that my daughter's family is moving out at about the end of the month. My adult son moved out two years ago and my adult daughter (plus spouse and child) moved in. My husband and I have literally never lived without children. Although I know I will be sad, I am actually so excited!
My weight loss has been great, just past the 40 pounds lost mark. Just about 26 to go. This has been a really long journey!9 -

Today is Adopt a Shelter Pet Day!

Tracey - Heather is lucky to have a supportive friend in you! When I look back at my life, I wish I'd quit doing what society expects sooner. Hope your husband is feeling better by now!
Janet - You look SO fabulous! I'm sorry to hear about your neighbor. Was continuing with their plans for the motor home rally her husband's choice or was she on board with it? Maybe they just need some time to absorb the news before taking any more steps.
Felicia - Love the prom picture. Those two are just adorable!
We had such a nice anniversary weekend. Our friends married right around the same date, a year after we did, so we've often celebrated together since Philip and I moved back to Texas. This year we went out for a fabulous Italian meal and spent the rest of the weekend lazing around at the river house. It was a lovely little break.
Now I'm back to my usual routine. I've been using Noom and it's been really helpful, but my subscription will be up soon and I won't mind letting it go. Most of what I learned will transfer here once I'm not checking in with the app every day.

I had a good night's sleep. yay.
I'm really having a hard time staying in the green, especially in evenings. Any tips ?
I'm bummed.
From ages 15- 35 or so I dieted or watched my weight a lot. I was a bit obsessive. binge exercise cycles.
From ages about 35-50 I didn't need to watch weight at all or much and till 2 years ago.
When I did gain a few pounds I lost it pretty easily. I'd start dieting and go for a few runs and a first few pounds of water weight or whatever would drop off right away -which was so encouraging.
Now I don't binge, but due to lowering metabolism and not lowering appetite: yikes.
I eat about 350 calories in breakfast. Then either lunch or dinner is high. My self-control in regards to food is not very good at present.
Now I can't run any more due to a foot thing.
In theory I could fast walk, but it doesn't work out the same. I tend to end up ambling or strolling at some point. The foot thing can come up on longer walks.
I don't feel it with the elliptical due to the lack of impact.
A new day, I say, today it should not be too difficult, but when evening comes I'm so tired and feel frustrated doing food control and just want to eat "normally" not watch my weight. Hopefully I will get into the swing. I don't know.0 -
Motivation - Like Barbie I do a lot of reading. I am addicted to "improving" books. I'm not keen on audio, but I love to read on my Kindle or tablet. I do listen to Podcasts when I'm running - again very inspiring ones which make me feel bonded to people's lives and struggles. I keep away from depressing stuff on TV etc. Don't watch heavy drama, or shows about nasty people. If I watch a series it has to have a moral heroine or hero and not be too dark. Mostly I watch day time shows about people doing good things. I don't do Twitter or Instagram or play mindless games. I have only about 7 friends on Facebook, who I want to keep in touch with. This group is my only online indulgence these days.
Basically, where you pay attention is how you are going to feel. There is so much joy in the world if you look for it. There is an inspiring book for almost every woe.
One thing I have learnt is that relying on "motivation" to do anything doesn't work. You need to bit by bit set up routines and habits which will carry you through whether you "feel like it" or not. I rarely want to exercise in the morning, and some days I really, really don't want to, but I do it, however much I grumble. I do it because it's worth it, oh so worth it afterwards and because I always do it.
I think I have read around 26 books about running, 8 books about good death, many books about happiness and good habits, loads about starting new lives in new countries, loads about decluttering, etc etc. These are my destressors.
I know a lot about misery. I am writing my memoir about my teenage years, when I was desperately unhappy. I have been severely depressed about four times in my life. I know there are terrible things in the world, I watch the news and read a good newspaper once a week. I know our country is run by morons. I know the climate is screwed.
I choose to learn about science, medicine, history, nature, anthropology, architecture, archaeology. That gives me joy. I read a lot about "spiritual" grace and try to work towards it, though I don't believe in any kind of god. I love biographies.
I meditate, very badly. I run, very badly. Both those things help a lot. I dance, very badly, and love it. I keep company with positive people. I adore my grandchildren.
I am very lucky at this point in my life. That luck may not last. I am nearing 70. I am grateful for every good day and most days are good. I hope they continue. Whatever happens in the future I hope I will be able to choose the best path through it. The one thing we have power over is our attitude, although we do have more power to change things than we think. We can always do more than we think. Our recent move to Brighton and Hove, a vibrant seaside city, was a huge lifestyle change, but so, so worth all the difficulties we went through.

My antibiotics seem to be working. I got up at 5.30 so I could eat something and sit upright while I took them, per instructions!
Going to take DH up his cup of tea in a minute.

heather I remember how long and how tough the search for your new home was, you hit so many dead ends and challenges with the housing market. You never gave up, you took breaks, you kept at it and now here you are at your beautiful home by the sea! Perfect metaphor for the health journey we're all on, not easy, not a perfect straight line, but oh so worth the little efforts!

Michele I'm in awe of your JC Penney coupon success (a Bra for $2?!?). The last bra I bought from JCP ended up costing $35 when the shipping got added in. No more for me! Will reserve JCPenney purchases for the quarterly Medford trips.

Katla Too bad the iphone is a long term purchase. I did NOT like T-Mobile when we had it in Idaho, too many dropped calls/dead zones. Now that we're in remote Southern Oregon Coast, I'm thinking of changing from Consumer Cellular to Verizon but holding off because of the cost. My iPhone works ok from our house, but my husband's flip phone (he will NOT upgrade) cannot access voicemail from our house. The third party agreement they have with our nearest tower doesn't support voicemail on old phones. To setup and access his voicemail, he'd have to go to the end of the lane or drive up to the main road. Not gonna happen!

KJ need your "flip"ping help to reframe my relationship with my car. I call her "Bossy" for all the frustrating verbal interactions. Bought for the foot activated hatchback, but ... I'm so short my feet get in the trigger zone whenever loading groceries and the &@%# thing kept closing onto my head. Finally had the dealer disable it. Now I regret giving up my 12 year old Freelander for the new Escape and car payments. Pfaugh.

Banana - I too am a snacker, I tend to eat smaller meals so I have room to snack. Right now I am back in the zone and doing well with my eating. One thing that works for me is to set a cut off time for eating. If I have an arbitrary time in my head that I can't eat after, I do pretty good sticking to it. Some of the ladies will brush their teeth as a signal to themselves that they are done eating for the day. If you can't stop your evening snacking, then plan smaller meals throughout the day that allow room for the snacking. Pre-log your food so you know that the snacks don't take you over your calorie goal. As for walking, even a stroll will burn some calories, which in turn will allow for more food. Inside walking counts too, get up and move while you watch TV. Stick with it. It works in the long run. Come back when you need to vent, we are here to listen.
As for me, not a lot going on today. I have to work and then need to pack to head out on my hubs business trip with him tomorrow. Added bonus, we will stay with our best friends so I get friend time while he is working during the day.
