    Alright Team No Excuses,

I assume that you have taken care of your physical selves today with your proper nutrition and kick-butt workouts. Now's the time for a final thought of the night.

As we all know, obesity and obesity-related health issues like Type II diabetes are on the rise, not only in the United States but throughout the world. Do YOU feel like this is a relevant issue and something that we should be concerned about, or do you think that there is too much emphasis on it?

Either way, none of us can deny the fact that collectively, as a nation, we are getting unhealthier, more sedentary, and less fit. What do you think needs to be done to make the social changes to promote healthier lifestyles?

Whether it be big or small, how are YOU promoting your new, healthier lifestyle? Specifically, what do you hope to achieve by doing this?

Hope everyone had a great day of Bringing IT and I will see you all tomorrow!

I had a great day. Good workout after work. Pre-planned dinner well within my limits.
    wahoooo!!!!!!!!!
But the best part was someone asked me today at work what I was "on" because they noticed I'm losing. And it certainly wasn't someone who usually even speaks to me. That felt pretty good. Most everyone at my workplace thinks I'm crazy because I eat more healthily than any of them anyway. I just don't think I need the constant flow of soda, junk food & candy they all - thin or not - seem to exist on.

    Way to Go Georg!

Nobody needs that constant flow of junk...even when you are feeling down, all it takes is a comment like that to push you forward again! Taking care of yourself just makes you give off that "glow!":drinker:

Hey M~ its been good seeing you around Forum today :)

I think Type II diabetes is a huge problem, as it has affected my life with people I love, who have lived lives of fatty foods, salt salt salt and more salt and do forget to add the sugar..

I personally think that the social changes start at home with our kids. When I was a kid we ate breakfast in the morning and were out the door playing until the street lights came on and we heard mom's whistle. We stopped in to get a quick PB&J and back out on our bikes, hikes, horses, or innertubes on the river. We stopped at a wild plum tree for a snack and picked rasberries in Mrs. Holidays yard.....yes it is true that if you stopped in at Mrs. Youngs and asked for a cookie, she would ablige, but the rule was only 1 a day. Mom made a healthy filling meal and desert was something we had on special occasions. The point is, we didn't stay in playing video games or watching the countless kids channels on cable we see today. There was not pizza (well not the kind ya would want) and deep fried foods, chocolate milk and ice cream in the cafeteria. Serving sizes were 1 taco a fruit a veggie and a small carton of milk......there are alot of families with parents that both have to work. I understand this, and sometimes mustering the time to play with our kids after a long day is gruelling. My sister spends 2 hours a night playing with her kids.........exhausted or not. She takes them to the park after homework with their bikes if they want.......and they walk/ride there....if its raining they do twister or musical chairs. They do a night time dance for 1 hour, the kids pick the fun music they will dance to, lil girl dances with daddy and lil boy with his mom.....they jump around like silly dorks..........I must admit I have been in on this silly wiggle myself a time or 2. The point is she keeps her kids active. And if they are not being physically active they are reading books (my niece is 9 years old at middle school reading level). Due to genentics my nephew is a candidate for hereditary diabetes, he is 5.

How am I promoting a healthy lifestyle and what do I hope to achieve.

I am starting with me, right now. Breaking the mold in many ways. I will be a healthier better active mom for the babies that are yet to be here. I am preparing my body now with better food choices, exercise and attitude so that the body these little ones grow in is the best from the start. My fiancee has embraced my choices for a healthier us and although he is in shape he sits with me at supper and eats exactly what I eat. He gives his ideas for supper and is proud of me..................and having him proud is the greatest. I hope that by leading by example my kids will ask for a new bike instead of the newest video game system, that they will be active in our family home with what it takes to keep the critters.....enjoy sports and yes enjoy healthy foods. I am going to raise a healthy family that will in turn raise healthy families of their own....

And they all lived happily ever after...........................The End

hahahaha, had to do it...I wrote a frickin book....:flowerforyou:
  • Is it necessary to keep saying that " I BROUGHT IT" or "Bring IT" to post here? :blushing: I'm not sure I can get with that lingo lol
I had my cardio circuit training course tonight. I was able to stay on the elliptical machine for 20 minutes today, and I was not winded at all. It was so nice to have that feeling. I also added more weights in my resistance training as well, and I could really feel a good deep burn. I love that!
All in all, it was a great hour and a half workout for me!

It's just a little something to remind us to go hard everyday with our nutrition, workouts, and being our personal best. Great job on your workout with the elliptical. 5 lbs will be gone in NO time!

My downfall is def trying to stay on track with my diet and exercise when my hubby is home. He's a firefighter, so he's gone for days and then home for days. I want to spoil him on the days that he's home lol so I cook meals for him ( which are usually healthy, but sometimes rice or something not as healthy makes it to the table). I usually don't work out as much on the days that he's home either because I want to spend time having fun with him. He works out at work, and doesn't want to come home and work out again. He's in great shape though.

The following is an article written by a friend of mine. Using P90, P90X, tears, sweat, and hard work and dedication, Jim has lost more than 135 pounds in about a year and a half. I have never met anyone so dedicated, and Jim is one of the people who inspired me to really get my butt in gear. If a 6'6" mechanical engineering college student can commit to a new lifestyle and go from 331 pounds to 198 pounds of lean, ripped muscle, I can lose these mere 35. Jim won 10,000 in August for Bringing It too.

I hope Jim's words inspire you. Enjoy!

    Push Through Adversity
    By: Jim Evanski

No on said life is easy. We all face issues in our lives that test our strengths and provide us with a means to grow either positively or negatively. The challenge is to take our failures, disappointments, let downs or anything that can negatively affect our lives and turn it around to something that is useful. We can all just give up and go cry in the corner, but why take the easy way out? And yes, that is the easy way out. To just give up and feel pity for yourself doesn’t do you any good! We learn through our failures!!

There is a great quote that I found and I feel like it explains how I feel.

“The man who is swimming against the stream knows the strength of it”

We can all just go with the current, take the easy road and just coast through life. But the question is, how can you understand yourself if you have never tested the waters? Sometimes that current is too strong, we fall and pray to god that we end up on the bank. Just as physical strength, you need to build your mental strength as well. That current may be too strong today, but tomorrow is a new day and the possibilities are endless. You may not reach your goals the first time or the tenth, but each time is a new learning experience and you know what NOT to do. By continuing to evolve and build upon the strengths that you already have, I promise you that you will find that water getting easier and easier to push through.

Putting everything you have into something and failing is the toughest blow one can take. But is it really a failure? In my own experiences during my short time on this earth, I have found that every time I “failed” I learned and grew more than I would have when easily taking the win. I have always fought back and came back stronger and fiercer than ever. Ultimately, the failures that we experience in our lives teach us how to become a better and stronger person!

I cannot say I have had the easiest life, but I can honestly say I am blessed. Everything that I have done in my life and achieved has come through hard work and the strength to endure. Nothing was ever given to me; I have had to earn it. This has never been more true than now. I have been given the opportunity to see what I am made of. This is the time to push past my limits and become a new person, to commit to becoming the best person that I can be. I am not talking about fitness here. Today I am choosing to push through the adversity that has been put in front of me, and I know that I will come out victorious. There is so much to be learned here and new life lessons will be forged. So my question to everyone here is: When adversity is staring you dead in the face, what are you going to do about it? Go cry in the corner or fight that current!?!?!?!

    _________________________________________

    Amen, Jim!

That last quote didn't transfer properly. Oh well. =]
That's actually a good idea, I need to get up earlier and just do my work out then. We also live near a beautiful park, and as long as this great weather keeps up, we can go on walks together ( we do that often already =]) Thanks soo much for the idea!

    M

As far as social changes I definately think we need them ..starting with preventive health care we really need to treat these issue before they turn into diseases and ailments. I watch so many shows such as The Biggest Loser but the sad thing is if your not over 250 pounds your not likely to get in. It would be great to see them helping people who are just obese or unfit. But I guess we as Americans wouldnt be drawn to a show like that because then we would be facing our own reality that as a majority we are all obese and unfit. We look at those shows now and for the most part we sit back and say "wow he or she is big" not realizing we are headed right down that same path. I find that as Americans we tend to settle and get comfortable with our situations rather than really seeking out cures..some in which are rather simple..I remember at my heaviest 273+ I had serious issues with swollen feet I would say to myself that I knew it was the food, soda that I was eating daily but I would never strive to do something about it. I just kept eating until finally it got so bad I quit my job because I couldnt even put on a pair of shoes. What is ironic about this is I watched my aunt suffer from diabetes and high BP she also had huge swollen feet and would walk around in slippers all day that were way too tight...When I realized I was slowly turning into her I started making small changes..she died at a young age she missed out on a lot..I think sometimes that if she would have just taken the steps to better her health she may have been here today. I think we as a people need to stop accepting that its ok to be unhealthy.....its easier said than done but I look at it like this....if someone said to you that your hair was messed up you would usually go fix it and not have an issue....Why is it when someone says you need to lose a little weight...we get all in a tizzy? We have really been programmed to accept a self inflicted short life span and abuse of our bodies........its late and I should head off to bed if I am going to be able to Bring It ..tomorrow....nice message from Jim it really was an eye opener and great questions for tonight Michelle.....Thank You Wednesday another Cardio crazy day for me ..with NO EXCUSES!!
  • 1. When you reach your next short-term goal(s), how are you rewarding yourself? Well, I know this probably doesn't seem like a reward to some people, but I have alot of negative people in my circle of life and when I lost that first 7 pounds I just went around telling all of them kinda rubbing it in their face, the looks on their faces was the best reward! (And the feeling of accomplishment) My next 7 pounds, well I really don't know just yet, but I will let ya know when I decide.

    2. When you reach your long-term goal, how are you rewarding yourself? It will be a whole new wardrobe of really cute clothes. And being able to play with the kids without giving out or hurting afterwards.

    3. What's something that you've always wanted to do, but been too afraid or incapable of, that you will be able to do when you reach your goal? jumpig on a trampoline (sounds silly huh? but I can't do that right now)

    4. Finally, who have you inspired or hope to inspire with your new healthy lifestyle? I hope to inspire my kids, my husband and my sisters-in-law.
Thanks for the support and the adds. Let's BRING IT!!!!

i wanted to post a quick reply about adult onset diabetes. my mum has it. she was always healthy and active throughout her youth and managed to keep up with us 5 wild kids (along with horses and other pets). in the last 10 -15 years she has had thyroid troubles and arthritus troubles and mutiplying weight-related troubles.
i am back in the states for a week to visit and it makes me incredibly sad to see her struggle through the day as her weight increases and her strength decreases.
my mum is an inspiration in many ways - she is an amazing, strong, powerful woman. i have always wanted to grow up to be like her and seeing her struggle with all these terrible weight and health problems only encourages me to be stronger:
i am determined not to let weight problems affect my life and my future.

    Good Morning Team!

Once again, I love the responses and deep thoughts we have on this board. I know that some might think we have a tendency to get toooo deep here, but I think that the articles and the questions will help motivate you more than just a kick in the booty to get going on those days that you just aren't feeling it.

We all have different reasons for being here and different end goals. But the articles help all of us, and I do enjoy reading them, whether they're about struggles, weaknesses, strengths, or hitting your goals. If you guys like to write or have some good articles to post yourself, please do! Even if we don't all have time to respond, I know that we're still taking something away from all of them.

    Have a good day everyone!

hahahaha, had to do it...I wrote a frickin book....:flowerforyou:

Wow sassie, I envy the nutrition model of your childhood!! I grew up on sugary cereals, snacks like Little Debbies and Poptarts, McDonalds, you name it. I had *no* idea what nutrition was all about. Luckily I was skinny as a child but as soon as I turned 12 I started gaining. In college I suddenly found I was 149 pounds!!!!!! (I'm not even 5'2" so that was way too much).

I had no idea what to do. I tried the Atkins Diet which worked... I lost about 15 pounds relatively quickly, but I felt really unhealthy. My breath stunk and I lacked energy and I felt *gross* from all the bacon and hot dogs I was eating!!! I also started running... I had run track and road races in high school but mostly for my Dad, and I had never liked it or wanted to do it. But when I was at 149 I started to do it and it was the first time in my life I actually ran just for *me*. It's funny now to think that I came to running to lose weight and now I just love it... it's as regular a part of my life as brushing my teeth LOL.

I didn't know how to keep the weight off and went through many, many crash diets. Sometimes I would only eat fruit and vegetables, lose a lot of weight, then go back to eating "normally"/ badly and re-gain the weight. I started to notice that there was an uphill trend over time, every time I re-gained weight. So this is the first time I have really cared about nutrition and what I put in my body, and it is more about a healthy lifestyle than about weight. (Although yes, I admit I would like to lose a good ten pounds or more and it doesn't seem to be happening. But I don't care because I am being consistently healthy and *not* crash dieting and I truly believe that after my body has time to adjust and realize it is constantly being fed healthy things, it will lose the weight on its own.)

So that's my story and honestly I don't feel I am in a position to preach to anyone, I just if anything try to live by example. Honestly it is hard for me to live a healthy lifestyle when I'm surrounded by people who think there's nothing wrong with sugar and HFCS and all of that. Even in the face of these daunting statistics and when they can SEE with their own eyes how obese Americans are compared to the rest of the world and compared to how we were 30 years or so ago when our grocery stores weren't packed full of processed foods.

So for now I am just really happy being healthy... when I'm on my own I go shopping for fruits and veggies and make low fat recipes and pack my lunches etc. When I'm with a group of friends or family I try to quietly eat only good things although that is really hard... not only because there are so few choices but also because people don't understand, they think I'm weird! After I'm more comfortable and used to this lifestyle I may feel more confident but right now I am just proud of myself for sticking to it no matter what the situation.

i wanted to post a quick reply about adult onset diabetes. my mum has it. she was always healthy and active throughout her youth and managed to keep up with us 5 wild kids (along with horses and other pets). in the last 10 -15 years she has had thyroid troubles and arthritus troubles and mutiplying weight-related troubles.
i am back in the states for a week to visit and it makes me incredibly sad to see her struggle through the day as her weight increases and her strength decreases.
my mum is an inspiration in many ways - she is an amazing, strong, powerful woman. i have always wanted to grow up to be like her and seeing her struggle with all these terrible weight and health problems only encourages me to be stronger:
i am determined not to let weight problems affect my life and my future.

My mom too was very active when she was younger -- she had three kids by the age of 25 and I remember she would drop us off at babysitting at the gym while she did aerobics classes. She used to ride her bike everywhere. Now she is overweight and suffers from so many weight-related health problems. It breaks my heart and makes me determined to stay healthy. The good thing is, she knows she needs to get healthy and eat better... she is on a program called Medifast that was prescribed by her doctor and she has lost 15 pounds on it so far.

    Thanks for sharing.

I don't mean to sound nosy but why don't you just cut those negative people out of your circle/life? Unless they are family... that's pretty difficult but still... perhaps limit the interactions LOL.

Good luck reaching your goals!

I totally agree neeterskeeter. Which brings us to question of the day.

How do YOU deal with that toxic friend (oh come on, one dessert won't hurt you), that pushy relative (Aunt Greta made this pecan pie "just" for you), those clueless family members (why can't you just eat normally like the rest of us?), and other people from the peanut gallery who choose to be critical of your HEALTHY habits? I know we touched on this a bit before, but we've all been there, and instead of caving, what are ways that you tactfully but firmly stick to your plan?

Sometimes people who are critical of your healthy habits are doing it out of their own insecurities about their weight. They think that those of us who are choosing this healthy lifestyle are also implying that they should get up and do something as well. While this would be awesome, we all know that we can't force others, and honestly, most of us don't give two hoots if they eat like crap and don't exercise. Just DON'T complain to us when you are gaining weight and feeling down!

So? What are your tips team?

Great thoughts. As a mom of 3 girls, I want to be a healthy example to them. Since I've gotten in shape and lost weight, I've completely changed our eating habits (my kids love brown rice, whole grains, fruit & veggies, etc). My kids love being active, we walk and bike a lot in the summer, go to the pool, etc. During the winter, the girls have jump ropes that they jump indoors. They raised money for their school for the American Heart Association Jump-a-thon tomorrow. I'm going in to twirl jump ropes for their gym classes. I became a Team Beachbody coach so I can help other people get in shape. They are really promoting workouts from Kathy Smith that help with Type II diabetes (even got the approval of the Amercian Diabetes Association). Anyway... I live a healthy lifestyle and hope to lead by example. I teach my kids healthy habits and they are teaching their friends!! It's amazing to me to see how unhealthy the kids eat at schools now!! (my pet topic... :grumble: ) People need education, there are so many people that have *no* idea how to eat healthy now.

I try not to be preachy to people or make a big deal out of it. If I'm offered something that I don't want, I just say no thank you. Then if someone asks why or tries to get pushy, then I'll go into more details. Some people do get offended if you won't try some of their special dessert, but you know what? They are offending me by trying to get me to eat something I don't want!!! :noway: Most of my family and friends just know that I eat healthy and don't even offer me desserts anymore. I think they would be more surprised if I actually ate one! Then I get the... oh I wish I had your willpower statement...
