@katharmonic thank you for the reminder about pushing instead of pulling. I had forgotten all about it but I'm really bad for that and concentrating on pushing forward with my back foot rather than pulling myself forward with my front foot seems to make a big different to how I feel while running.
Which did great for the first couple of kilometres of this morning's short (cutback week) long run. I was sort of running on autopilot, still half asleep. I woke up in the middle of the night with a cramp in one calf, and broken sleep makes me zombie like. So instead of following my intended route, I ended up taking one I've never done on foot before. With a devil of a hill that even my clapped out old banger of a car doesn't like! What the heck? (That's what my legs said!) Was actually quite a nice little route, my brain reckons some up and down is good for me so I may well use it every now and then. Was also interested to see on Strava that it is a segment, and I was the third fastest woman on it this year and 11th of 19 women in total. My local idol (who is unfortunately in my age group so I'm forever doomed to be in awe of her) showed up in there. So now (uh-oh) I have a challenge... to match her time on that hill!
Made me laugh when I checked Strava to also notice that the 'devil hill run' ended up being 6.66km!
July goal 85km. Run so far: 65.29km14 -
I was unsure yesterday if I'd get a run in today as I was knackered after exercising 6 days in a row (longest I'd done in a while), but made myself get up off the sofa and did 4 miles this morning. Those 4 miles felt so much easier than the 4 I did on Wednesday evening! I possibly could have run a bit more but I have things to be getting on with today so didn't want to be out too long.
I'm trying to get my pace right so that I can run the HM without stopping too much and also not lose my friends but I cannot seem to get myself to slow down (am about 10 seconds a km too fast at the moment). Any suggestions?

Run at least 4 5k races.
Get under 30:00 and a PR for 5k.
Average at least 135k per month, which would put me over 1,000 miles for the year.
Run the Year Team: Five for Nineteen
Gave some thought to making today a longer run, but remembered what @PastorVincent reminded us of. Having been hospitalized for heat exhaustion before, I know there is a very fine line between being hot and heat exhaustion. Stayed on the side of caution today.

Well, that was steamy. Definitely a miserably hot and humid day out there, glad I got it done reasonably early. Had lots of water along the way and everyone was checking on everyone else to make sure they were doing okay in the heat. I brought a box of popsicles along in a cooler and they were a big hit at the end. I'm aiming for the "most popular" vote this week15 -
July total so far 39.2 of 50 miles.
Went to Parkrun today after resting the past couple days due to some slight hip pain. More experienced runners there advised me that I was describing an IT band issue when I pointed to the location and suggested strength training and and foam rolling. The marathon running friend showed me several stretches to help and offered lots of encouragement and advice.
I still ran the Parkrun but focused on how my body was feeling and keeping my pace easy. I took lots of walk breaks due to the heat and my intention not to push myself too hard. It was really hot out there and all the runners were encouraged to drink lots of water and take an easy pace. We also have an outdoor shower located at our start/finish of the event which several took advantage of while cooling down.11 -
So the local idol I mentioned earlier messaged me to invite me to join a group of women who run together near here. I said thanks but they're out of my league for now. She was like 'meh they train at 6 min per km.' Umm I train at like 8 min per km 😥 She gave me a thumb up and went silent. Now I feel like that kid nobody wants on their team at school 🙄😂13

So it’s hot right now, in case you didn’t notice. Can I complain about the cold for a moment? Next week, starting Tuesday, my husband and I will be house- and dog-sitting for an elderly lady who has a gorgeous house with a pool. Not a heated pool, but still. We do this every year and look forward to it, especially swimming at night. According to the weather forecast, it’s supposed to be stinking hot up until Tuesday, when the nighttime temperature will suddenly plunge to record lows, 59 degrees! And stay there until after she returns from vacation, when it will return to regular July programming, sickeningly hot and humid. What the actual... you know? I was looking forward to swimming instead of running, give my legs a break, but it would be criminal not to run in 59 degree weather in flippin July in Memphis. And I am not swimming in weather in the 50s!
Sorry, first world problems, had to vent. Maybe it won’t actually set an all time record for lowest temperature in Memphis in July just when I want to go swimming. Anyone who wants to come down here next Tuesday for a nice chilly autumn run?11 -
I'm way behind on the thread again. I'll try to catch up some this weekend. I did want to post my Virtual 10K race report...which will be short and nothing like @MobyCarp would post. But, here goes.
I got up early for me on a Saturday morning, 5:50, so I could eat breakfast and have a couple of cups of coffee before I left and hopefully get the run in before it got too hot.
Since this was the One Small Step race in celebration of the moon landing, I decided to run where this "woman had never run before" - the Tusculum Trail about 45 minutes from my house. I got started with the run at about 7:50.
According to my Garmin, it was 75°F with a humidity level of 89% and no wind. Garmin says the feel like was 75°F, but I beg to differ! It was HOT!!!
The course was a little bit hillier than I was expecting it to be with a lot less shade than I expected. All of this factored into my time, as I wound up walking a whole lot more than I planned. I just couldn't run all of those hills. The first two miles I ran at 11:59 and 11:41, but then the bigger hills got me and the third mile was 13:02. I was still hopeful at the halfway point that I could beat my time from 2009. I thought I had run mostly uphill on the way out, so the way back would have more down hill portions. Well, that was all in my head! I think it was more uphill on the way back! (Is this just me, or does everyone do this?) Anyway, my final miles were 12:35, 12:32, and 13:47. My final time was 1:18:33 seconds for 6.23 miles, which Garmin called my 10K. So, in reality, it was a couple of seconds quicker than that, but that will just make this run easier to beat next time. (I was 1:33 seconds slower than when I ran the 10K I ran in 2009. )
Garmin did record 3 PB's for this run. A 5K record of 37:37 minutes. A 10K record of 1:18:33, since I didn't have a Garmin when I ran my first 10K. And my longest run of 6.23 miles.
Here's a post race picture of me with my medal and bib on. I have had them for over a week, but didn't open the package until today. Sorry, I don't know how to do the "spoiler" thing.
Wow, I look like I have 10 million chins!!! I do see some sweat dripping too. I take horrible selfies.

Great job on the devil hill segment @eleanorhawkins! Glad my comment was helpful to you too. Love the devil hill run mileage, so perfect.
And don't let that conversation with your "idol" get to you. We're all in different places. I know what you mean, when someone's "oh, I'm so slow" is so much faster than me. Doesn't mean you're not awesome!6 -
@emmamcgarity sounds like you picked up some great tips there!
@rheddmobile can you find a wetsuit anywhere?
@quilteryoyo awesome job and cool bling! In my head the second half of a run is always downhill. Shame the roads and trails didn't read that memo 😂
@katharmonic thanks, I need to research strava statistics and move to a town of slow runners so I can actually run with someone. I've even tried to start my own group but apparently the only other person my speed is a grumpy old man who hates people 🤔4 -

Yeah, see the problem is what you are used to. When I saw to my wife "yeah, just going to get a slow run in cause I am tired" or whatever, I am still running several minutes per mile faster than she does. So your "idol" runs say 4 min/km - then "6 min/km" IS SLOW, for her. And that is her world. People used to that level often forget the rest of the paces. To someone whose world is 4 min/km, 8 would be like walking. You have to deliberately force your mind to readjust ranges when you are dealing with people outside your own ranges. It is not something that comes naturally.
It is like me saying "a short run" - by which I mean like 8 or 10 miles, and people on this thread be like "8 miles? It would take me WEEKS to run that far!"
I doubt she meant anything by her comment, it just takes extra thought and time to mental readjust and she probably was not ready for that.6 -
Soooo I know we "more experienced expert runners" (how the heck did I get into THAT group) say things like "train in any weather" and all that - but not even @MobyCarp really did that. Today with temps beyond a 100, and still climbing, I will be skipping my long run. Tomorrow is already jammed packed schedule wise so not like I can just put it off, I will just miss it.
I wanted to post that because I want you, fair reader, to be okay with missing runs in the extreme ends of weather, or at least readjusting goals. Be smart, know your body and limits, and work with them. If it is merely just outside your comfort zone, then stop whining and get out there. If its dangerous weather, stay in. Run on the dreadmill, or do nothing. Missing one run will not impact your training, but running and getting heat stroke very well code have impacts beyond your running. Same with frostbite.
In short, be smart about your training unless you want to cut your career as short as possible.10 -

75F with 89% humidity is horrible. With that much water in the air your body's cooling systems fail miserably. Well done getting your race done and PB's despite the heat!3 -
Happy Saturday! It's been a hot minute since I've dropped in here. I just can't keep up with the thread, but I'd like to start checking in here more. I came back to this thread last weekend, but with the passing of @MobyCarp I was just too sad and needed some time to process.
I'm currently training for marathon number 13 - the Columbus Marathon this October. I've run the full before and it was horribly hot and humid, not to mention I was sick, so I need to "get revenge." I also want to run the Indianapolis Monumental Marathon a few weeks later but I've haven't fully committed (or registered) yet. I've had some health issues related to my autoimmune disease in the recent months and along with the summer heat, I've had a bit of a tough time. I knew training for a full in the summer was going to be tough and already planned to "allow" myself to slow down, so I'm trying not to be too hard on myself but I really cannot wait for some cooler temps. At the end of my ten miles this morning, the heat index was already up to 95F with a dew point of 75 degrees. We're supposed to get some rain tomorrow followed by a cold front and we will have high temps in the low 80s next week...so excited for that!PastorVincent wrote: »Soooo I know we "more experienced expert runners" (how the heck did I get into THAT group) say things like "train in any weather" and all that - but not even @MobyCarp really did that. I know that can be a tough decision to skip a long run, but I think you made the smart choice.

@PastorVincent Maybe it should be changed to "train in any weather that a race would be permitted to go ahead in".
@quilteryoyo Congrats on a great 10K result!!!
@Squish815 Check if your watch (or phone app) has the ability to set alerts, that's what I do. That way, it's simply a case of leaving it to your watch to let you know when you're going too fast/slow (or if your HR is too high/low if you decide to do HR-based training).
I won't complain about the heat...everyone else is already doing that...although here in the Dallas area we're supposed to get much cooler weather (early morning lows in the 70s) starting towards the middle of next week. Hurrah!

@PastorVincent oh yeah I totally get that, she's a really nice woman and she's the local 'idol' because she wins everything out there, so obviously it's a bit like when I read on the forums that someone maintains on 2800 calories per day when that would be 2 days for me. Brain just cannot compute it 😂
I was merely raging at the fact that I'm unable to find anyone to run with due to the fact that I am... one of the most sedate. I know, I know, still lapping the ones on the couch.3 -

When you run with yourself, you're running with your perfect training partner.9 -
@eleanorhawkins you are a fantastic runner, just the way you are, and you are my idol for doing what's best for you, listening to your body and keeping going!
For me, still now running, toe still hurts though not throbbing so yay. Probably be a few more days. Sigh. I think its time to start my strength training program since I can't run.
Today is more house hunting, though I hope to have news Wednesday night (Tuesday for most of you fine folk!) ... If you pray, and it's appropriate, please pray Wednesday is good news! If you don't, can you cross your fingers for good news Wednesday!
And if you are curious, this is the house we hope to be getting the good news about...

@Avidkeo awww thanks! Go pick up some heavy stuff 😁 Fingers and toes crossed for the house, it's cooooooool!2
