I'm in a bit of a conundrum. I was originally planning on running the Shanghai Marathon on Nov. 17, but 1) my training is not going very well and 2) my boss doesn't like the idea very much, since I'll be the lead on the project and if I'm running, well let's just say it ain't gonna be pretty. She's been trying to talk me into switching to the 10km all week, and I'm probably going to.
So the question becomes, what do I do now? Do I find a HM race nearby and call it a season? Or should I find a spring marathon and restart my training plan? Ditch running entirely for a month and learn rock-climbing?
If it is just a matter of timing, then finding a spring marathon could be wise, and you could do that AND run a half now instead of the full.
It really just comes down to what YOU want and YOUR goals. So to answer this you need to figure out what you think is important, and then plan for it.

@rheddmobile @Elise4270 Eek! I've eaten my share of bugs but that... no thank you!
@MNLittleFinn Wooohooo! My brain can't even start to comprehend how tough that must've been.

Hmm... I'm not keen on the peer pressure to switch distances. But assuming there's not enough time to dedicate to both for a respectable outcome... I hate to say work is probably the priority. Run when you can, and definitely take up rock climbing! I've seen some info on elite runners, they take seasons off. I can't remember how long a season is, maybe 6-8-12 weeks? It could be a good move, if you've hit a plateu, or are flirting with injury. Or just wanna keep your status at work.
Good luck. I want rock climbing pics. @ROBOTFOOD you do any rock climbing out thataway?1 -
@ContraryMaryMary, congrats on your half!
Yay for the new house, @Avidkeo! Hope you find some awesome new places to run.3 -
I am not a runner. Wah wah warning6 months 2 days post osteotomy, right. 4 days pre labral repair and acetabuloplasty, right. (reshape hip socket).
I haven't been hungry in 2 weeks because I'm constantly eating. It appears I'm a bit anxious.
So I'm reading journal articles on the procedure, risks and complications, one mention from my doc is the risk of a stress fracture; so I wanna know what I can do, what to take note of. FAI surgery doesn't seem to come with the same favorable outcomes as the last 3 surgeries. But I think it's the resurgence of left side pain and numbness that's got my brain weasels in a tissy.
So my blood pressure, diastolic, has come up 15 points... My weight is up, I eat McDonald's all the time now. I had canned cheese and chips for dinner... and everytime I think about a walk, I decide against it because of pain. I think I'm broken. So I wanted to cathart- not in the injury thread all alone. I'm so irritatable. I can't stand Walmart, hate being at church, I'm so grumpy. I'm restless. It's horrible. I suppose I could take a chill pill and see if it helps.😉
So I'm just trying to "get it out". Any suggestions as to how to cope? What's your go-to stress management technique? (Ya, other than running).

I'm sorry you're having a rough time.
What types of activity can you safely do without pain?
As far as the food choices, I'm guessing you know what you need to do, you just need to do some planning and DO IT.

September goal: 110 miles
9/1: 8.86 miles
9/3: 6.31 miles
9/4: 6.25 miles
9/5: 6.25 miles
9/8: 10.55 miles
38.22/110 miles completed
I ran 10.55 miles this morning. It was a nice long run. I felt much better than last week's long run. It was pretty nice when I started out at about 74°F, but it was up to 84°F by the time I finished. I added a 2 mile loop at the beginning of my run and by the last 2 miles I was ready to be done. I probably would have cut it a little shorter if I had been closer to home. But I'm glad I toughed it out and didn't let the heat stop me. I did see 2 deer this morning and a couple of cottontails. And lot of cats. I always see lots of cats.
Now i am just waiting for my pizza dough to rise so I can eat and I am thinking about giving the dogs baths. But I might just sit here in the couch and read a book instead.
Great job on your AG award @7lenny7!
Congratulations @MNLittleFinn! I can't even imagine running 103 miles at one time. It usually takes me a month at least.
Congratulations on your AG award @ContraryMaryMary!
Sounds like you are settling in nicely @Avidkeo!
@rheddmobile Your poor husband! I cannot even imagine swallowing that june bug. A little brown one would be bad, but that would be way worse!
@Elise4270 I wish I had some awesome advice for you. We are always here to listen though when you need us.

Right now I’m focused on cleaning and a few outside chores. I’m trying to get “caught ahead” anticipating that I’m not doing housework.
I feel better. I talked to dh and tried to flesh out my hang up. It wasn’t super productive. But, he’s gone to see his grandma today so I made a point to go ahead and apply to PA school. So, I submitted my application and scheduled the dumb GRE (that I will fail). But, no more sitting on the fence over it. The chances of getting in are slim, i don’t expect to get in, but I followed through, and swung for the fences. I think that was my a lot weight.
Thanks for being there everyone. I should celebrate and trim the bushes with this old janky trimmer that every time I use, I cut the cord in half, fourths, eighths.... I threatened to go buy a new one, dh said I could spen 20 on it. One I want is 120. So... bet I still get it.9 -

Occasionally. Red Rock Canyon is about 30min away which has world class climbs. But it’s usually crowded / spots taken. 20yrs should, you’d be alone. These days for me, I mostly powerlift and snowboard.

There's a short video of me finishing the race, actually running in the squid costume, but we're experiencing technical difficulties with it. I'll post it if I can...
Just the 5k today. Not a PR, not an AG award - 31:27.6. Shh, don't tell anyone I was too optimistic with corral selection. I got into the 9:00-10:00 group, but at the very back. Zombies, Run! said I did the first mile in 9:45, and the official results page calculates an average pace of 10:08, so I'm not feeling TOO repentant. It rained, and the costume got heavy and it was very warm in there.
Otherwise had a lovely day at the zoo. My big toe has been feeling like I might lose a toenail all week, and after banging it on a bronze alligator sculpture, I have been compelled to try to drain any blister fluid from behind the nail. There was enough to confirm the "gonna lose that nail" idea. It feels much better without all that pressure behind it. No photos of that - it just doesn't look particularly remarkable. This will be the third lifetime toenail lost. NBD. This one is the lowest mileage, though. I think the damage happened on a 6 mile run.

That has to be a squid PR though, right? Nice running in what looks like a very hot, heavy costume!

4 miles this morning. For some reason, I thought the training plan had 3 for today, but I got home and realized I needed to go out for another mile...6 -
@autumnblade75 I love the squid costume! My gosh it must have been hot in there.
It seems to me you seeded yourself just about perfectly - since your first mile was under 10 minutes, if you were further back you would have had to go around others. And everyone is allowed to be a little optimistic when seeding. It’s the walkers who put themselves in front who drive everybody crazy.3 -
Date :::: Miles :::: Cumulative
09/01/19 :::: 11.5 :::: 11.5
09/02/19 :::: 5.5 :::: 17.0
09/03/19 :::: 3.0 :::: 20.0
09/04/19 :::: 6.7 :::: 26.7
09/05/19 :::: 0.0 :::: 26.7
09/06/19 :::: 4.7 :::: 31.5
09/07/19 :::: 13.1 :::: 44.6
09/08/19 :::: 5.2 :::: 49.8
I spent most of the day at work again, trying to get a little bit on top of my deadlines. I made some progress but this week promises to be crazy as I fly out Wednesday morning for a work trip. Anyway, I brought my running stuff to work and despite really not wanting to, went for a run around 4:30. I had grand ideas of getting 6 or 7 miles but 5 was the best I could do. I definitely need to replace this pair of shoes, my knees are feeling it.
Apologies on not catching up right now - I need to get the dog walked and things ready for tomorrow but I'll stop back a little later so I can congratulate the racers, etc.

@autumnblade75 That squid costume is awesome!1

11.93 miles today in Memphis (Shelby Farms / Greenline). I kinda screwed up running this weekend. Originally, I was going to get to Memphis on Sat., but ended up sleeping a lot and just decided to run around near home instead and go to Memphis today. But when I went out, I didn't look at my schedule and had in my mind somehow that I was planning 17 miles for a long run and 10 miles for the other day this weekend. So I flipped them and did 10 miles yesterday. After I got home, I realized it was supposed to be 17 and 5 miles, so I overdid it by 5 miles yesterday. As a result, I told myself I would do somewhere between 12 and 17 miles today and just see how things went. But then I slept in enough that I didn't arrive until it was starting to get hot. Driving down, it was a nice 73F much of the drive until right before I arrived when the sun came out and it was already mid-80's when I finally started. Got up to low to mid 90's while I was running. Naturally, I ended up sweating off my CGM when I was already on the way back to the car, so that was my cue to not worry about adding any additional miles since I would not have much information about BG without having to stop and manually test. And I didn't want to do that, so I got my miles in for the week at least, but it was not as good of a run today.
ETA: Early humans ran to catch meat. Seeing this and not being allowed to eat it is mighty confusing to my body...12 -

I agree. Sounds like you did well! I could not imagine running a 5k in that get up!4 -
@MNLittleFinn - I just can't even comprehend the miles and the hours. Amazing endurance. Congratulations and I hope you are recovering well - and sleeping for days!
@rheddmobile good grief on that Junebug. I swallowed some kind of little bug today while running and it stuck in the back of my throat and I nearly gagged thinking about that junebug.
@noblsheep sorry you have to pick between your marathon and work. I'm not sure what you should do but I'd be tempted to at least find a half to run soon and then evaluate what you want to do. Rock climbing sounds awesome and I'm planning on taking on more of that after my HMs are over in October. I'm looking forward to kind of an "off" cycle and I'm not sure I could start another major training cycle right away.
@ContraryMaryMary awesome half marathon, congratulations! Well done on your AG 2nd place and great overall finish.
@username301 well done on personal bests for 5k and 6k - progress!
@Avidkeo wonderful that you are loving your new house. Sounds lovely.
@elise4270 sorry you have to have another surgery and are feeling down. I can't blame you, dealing with pain all the time. Not sure what to recommend to help, but thinking about you! Can you do sauna or soak in a hot tub. Is a massage out of the question? Oh and good luck with your application to PA school! You can't fail the GREs, it's just practice if you don't get the scores you want.
Nice job @dcolander! You should sign up for a 5k - great motivation and looks like you are ready!
Oh my gosh @autumnblade75, LOVE that you ran in a squid costume. And you did so well! I think I'm losing a toenail too - but it's half the nail the long way - the other half is good, so I'm not sure how this is going to go down.
2 -
@katharmonic thanks. English usage, reading and such I will score below 150. I did study but gave up when I couldn’t make any improvements. I sat with dh to help me, he couldn’t explain why, just knew the right answers because it made sense. Math I might do okay if I refresh some formulas. Writing? Nah... I’ll score a 2 or 3. Language is not my thing apparently. I took the TEAS for nursing school and made a 100% on the math. It was super easy math though. Won’t be doing that on the gre. I’ve taken it, but it’s been 100,000 years ago.
@T1DCarnivoreRunner that first buffalo pic, it looks like you took a bite outta one! Really, I think it’s a flower, but could be a nibble. Great pics btw. I can never get their faces, only butts.
@autumnblade75 I know there’s a squidward joke in there somewhere. Maybe @garygse has one? (Since we made fun of him, with love, about looking like the elf on the shelf that one race). Way to rock it! “Meow”.2 -
@Elise4270 Not a flower. That bison really had an open wound there, but I'm not sure where it came from.1

They were galloping around like maniacs and bonking heads the other day when we were there, seems to be the season for disputes. I know cows have a 9 month gestation and give birth in the spring, are buffalo the same way?1 -
@ContraryMaryMary nicely done on the race!
@elise4270 I know you don't like hugs but you get one from me. Good luck on the PA school application!
@dcolander nice job on your run; Great splits!
8 miles for me today. I had planned on 5 but a late night caused me to sleep in and so settled for 8, and I missed the rain. The first 4 miles were with Kody as I build up his endurance again, and the last 4 were solo. I don't know it was yesterday's 5K waking up my fast twitch muscles, or the cooler weather (or both) but today's "easy" pace was about 40 seconds quicker than it has been all summer, even though I had some sore muscles from the race yesterday. I felt so good that I pushed the pace for miles 6 and 7 and my heart rate still remained reasonable. Further proof I need more speed work. I'm feeling really, really good about where my running is at right now.
This Friday is the 13th, and it's a full moon, so I've organized an event for our local trail running group to run a 17 mile loop starting at 7pm. There's a 100 mile (and 100K, 50M, 50K, and 17M) race next month in the park I run most of my trails which consists of 16.7 mile loop. I can't make the race but there are many folks who are eager to practice the route so what better time than after sunset. I even got a special permit from the park service to allow us to run the trails until midnight.
