@MegaMooseEsq I just saw the news about the tornado in Sioux Falls. Are you friends OK?1

Speed workout was on the plan this morning: 1.25mi WU, 4x 1mi @ 8:00 pace with 1:30 min recovery, 2mi CD. The mile repeats weren't as bad as I was expecting, and actually came in quite a bit faster at 7:40, 7:38, 7:30, 7:29. The WU/CD felt very, very slow but were right at my long run pace. So feeling good.

Get under 30:00 and a PR for 5k.
Average at least 135k per month, which would put me over 1,000 miles for the year.
Run the Year Team: Five for Nineteen
High 60s F this morning and the humidity has returned. Forgot how it is to run warm and humid.

My first speedwork today was fun! Warmup; 5x1 min @ 9:13-9:33 w/1 min recovery; 4x1 min @ 8:28-8:48 w/1 min recovery; cooldown.
First set avg: 9:38, 9:03, 8:24, 8:37*, 10:27
Second set avg: 8:33, 8:14, 8:19, 8:46
My target pacing needs a little work. LOL I was either on target or slow for first interval, too fast in the middle and too slow for the last.
*The last two intervals in the first set I missed the recovery so that was tough. When my watch buzzed, I slowed down thinking "Finally" and then realized it was actually time for the last interval. Whoops! Also notable - I was practically dragging my dog around at the end of the speedwork. She also was ready to walk the last bit of cooldown. Ha! So the unintentional 3 minute interval was tough but the rest was great. I loved this workout!8 -

I’ve been checking in all morning - so far everyone seems okay. So scary though!3 -
Thank you for the kind comments for my 5K and marathon race reports! And @scott6255 and @ shanaber sorry about the lubing photo scare, LOL!!
Your support here is wonderful. Maybe the reason my running volume shrinks so much in the summer is because I check out from here and am wandering on my own? I really need to stick around next year.
One thing I forgot to mention in my marathon race report is that it was the first race I've been in which was "cupless", meaning there are no paper cups available at the aid stations. Since this is a relatively new thing, part of the swag was a HydraPak speed cup. I had my doubts and didn't like the idea of carrying some collapsible cup with my but I have to say it worked out very well. They pop right open and when I'm done with the drink I just smashed it into my back pocket and went on my way.
I still plan on posting race reports from my Superior Spring 50K (May) and the Tillamook Burn 50M (April) races, though they may not be as long since my memory fades.
That Superior 100 mile race that @MNLittleFinn just ran...there was a couple who ran the 100 mile who started the race engaged, ended it married. They had a wedding at the aid station at 77 miles. It was her first 100. Thankfully she didn't DNF!
@MNLittleFinn what's next on you racing calendar?
12 -
September goal: 45 mi running
9/10: 3.2, walk 1.9
next two days will be rest/walking only days, trying for a 5k PR on Friday.
Good luck all!5 -

I was at the AS for the wedding. The 2 of them looked amazing. They were really smart, running together, taking long breaks at each AS to stay relatively fresh. Normally they would beat me to an AS, then I'd leave before them. They beat me to the last 2 AS and finished in front of me. Both are really cool people, they took video and photos at the running retreat I went to.
No racing on my calendar for the foreseeable future, since Superior was the last race of 19 for me. I'm volunteering at a race in Mid October, and that will cap off my trail/ultra calendar for the year. 2020 is quasi open, but it will could be 50% decided the day I volunteer at the race.
Edit to add: one benefit of being slowish, and kind of bonking and having to hike a lot, my legs are like 90% recovered from the race. Now to get the chafing healed and get the bee sting on my bum to go down a bit more.

I ran another 6.25 miles this morning. It was a good run. The weather was nice enough for September. Still warm and humid, but not horrible. It was clear and there were lots of stars out. I saw a member of the Rotary club putting out flags for 9/11. (Our local Rotary club has a fundraiser where they put out American flags on the holidays and days like Veterans and Memorial day). I am starting to get some mild aches and pains after my runs which are typically the sign that I need new shoes. I just checked and I have 299.6 miles on my shoes. Usually it is around 300 miles that I start needing them. I last replaced my shoes June 26, so I guess it is about time. I really wish I could find something that would last longer than 300 miles.

Wow, I am failing miserably at keeping up with this thread right now. I skimmed through 290ish posts to get sort of caught up.
@7lenny7 great race report! That trail is beautiful. And I’ve never heard that about pickle juice!
@mbaker566 Ouch! Hope you are healing well.
@MegaMooseEsq Congrats on a race well run and getting through a tough year!
@MNLittleFinn Awesome! I can’t wait to read a RR for that one.
@Elise4270 I’m so sorry things are hard for you right now. Like many others have said, we are all here to provide some moral support.
Also, I am loving all the rock climbing talk!! I mostly climb inside because there are no rocks in Houston. Just buildings. But when the weather cools off a bit, we will get some outdoor time in around the Austin area and have a trip to Hueco Tanks planned the week after Christmas and a spring break trip to Horseshoe in Arkansas. I would love to get to Red Rocks eventually, even if it is busy.
RACE REPORT: On 9/7 I did a the Run for Life 5K supporting organ donation (love a race for a good cause). My training plan called for a 5K race and this one happened to fall perfectly. There aren’t many races in Houston in September because of the heat. This one not only was a cause near to my heart but also started on the field at Minute Maid Park, which is where the Astros play. Lots of races take place downtown but starting actually on the field never happens!
Anyway, this was a small race, probably 400-500 people total and tons of walkers and baby strollers. The number of people actually running the race was tiny. This was a new location for the race and the disorganization was evident. They had a path for people to walk down onto the field and a “Start” area marked with balloons but no one telling people which direction the race actually started in. So, people leisurely filed in and ended up standing around on the wrong side of the start. There were still people standing around up until a minute or 2 before the starting gun fired. Also, it was really unclear where the start actually was. The map on the website made it look like the real start was just outside of the field so many of us assumed the field portion was basically ceremonial. There wasn’t a timing thing at the start balloons either but our bibs had a timing chip on them. SO confusing.
Because of all this, we got started late. As we are standing on the field, my husband and I realize that every minute we wait, the sun is getting higher and the temps are going up. It’s gonna be hot. We started and ran around the field on the way up to the street level. I didn’t start my watch because I expected to cross a timing pad at some point, but we didn’t so I started it when it because evident we were actually racing. We really pushed ourselves. There were like 3 water stations on a 5K course consisting of 2 loops! Crazy but nice of them given the temps and general fitness levels of a lot of the participants. We grabbed water once about halfway through because we were dripping and the sun was brutal but didn’t really even break step to drink it. Just a quick sip to wet the mouth and continued on.
So, my distance was totally off on my watch, but according to the website, I finished in 27:10.6 (8:45 pace)! That was good enough for a second place in my AG and 26th out of 366 overall. My husband was 6th in his AG. We were both really happy with how we did! I enjoyed a smaller race and I expect that some of the organizational things will be worked out next year if they use this same venue.

Here's the first draft of the first part, of like 14 parts to the RR. it's pretty unpolished, but I wanted to give a little glimpse into the race.
Superior. Where do I start? Maybe with the quick, easy stuff. The Superior 100 Mile Endurance Run is a 103 mile ultra marathon on the Superior Hiking Trail in Northern Minnesota. With breathtaking views of Lake Superior, inland lakes and forests, river crossings, roots, rocks, and mud; Superior is equal parts beautiful and brutal. Throw in 21,000 feet of climbing, and it can hold its own against most any mountain ultra. There are no huge climbs. Instead, as race director John Storkamp puts it, it is a death of a thousand cuts. The race lives up to its motto: Rugged, Relentless, Remote.
Gooseberry to Splitrock. 9.7 miles
My wife, my son, and Matt, my crew chief saw me off at the start. We got there early, the atmosphere was electric. Seeing over a hundred other racers, ready to go, it was amazing. I was a ball of nerves, just waiting to go and ready to run. Soon enough it happened, and we were off, on the paved bike trail that was the first four miles of the course. Time flew, I ran and chatted with friends and new friends. After no time, we turned off the paved trail and onto the “real” trail, the Superior hiking trail, my home for the next 99 miles.
Here the relentlessness began. Up, down, up down, repeat. Through green forests, with just the first golden and red signs of fall on some trees. It was here that I had a realization. I wanted to make my time goal but, with the joy of the trail on me, I really didn’t care. As long as I made it to Lutsen before 10PM on Saturday, I would be OK. Even the wet crossing at the Split Rock river wasn’t bad. At the crossing the water was only 4-5 inches deep, the current strong enough to push my leg, but not unbalance me. It was a beautiful day, and everything seemed to be just fine.
Well, that’s what I thought. Somewhere between 7 and 8 miles in, the line of runners stopped, and a call came back down the line “does anyone have an epi-pen?” someone had gotten stung by a bee and had an allergic reaction. Fortunately another runner had theirs (and their crew had more) and the medicine was passed up the line. I have my WFR, and wanted to see if I could help. One of my friends, who is a RN was helping the stricken runner. She gave him the shot, and handed off the epi-pen to me. We got the cover back on and, since there was plenty of help, I handed the used pen back and headed toward the AS, wanting to make double sure that they were informed of what had happened. A mile later, my rear hurting from my own bee sting, I saw my friend rick the captain of the AS. I asked if he knew about the injured runner and he let me know that they did and that more help was on the way. Feeling better about the situation I ran the last 100 yards to the AS to refuel.
I hadn’t used all of my Tailwind, but I did a full reload anyway, it was feeling warmer than I had expected, and I knew that I had more than 10 miles to the next AS. the slide on my water bladder jammed when I was putting it back on. I cursed it out, shoved the bladder the rest of the way into the bag, and headed out. Next stop, Beaver Bay.

@MNLittleFinn Oh, the bad luck of only being 8 miles in on such a long race and having an allergic reaction bad enough to need an Epi-pen!0
-
@MNLittleFinn That sounds like an epic race!0
-
@MNLittleFinn The race report sounds great so far!!
@martaindale great job on your 5K! I am surprised the race was that unorganized. I have run the Houston marathon the last 5 years (well 4 HMs and the full last year) and it is the most organized race I have ever been in. But probably since your race was a new venue, they still had some bugs to work out. That Superior 100 mile race that @MNLittleFinn just ran...there was a couple who ran the 100 mile who started the race engaged, ended it married. They had a wedding at the aid station at 77 miles. It was her first 100. Thankfully she didn't DNF!
I really thought you were going to say "and ended it divorced"!!3 -
Teasers from 2 of the last sections. I obviously can't write sequentially.
Temperance River SP to Sawbill Trail 5.7 miles
In this section I got a hint that I might be stronger than I think. Even though I was walking almost everything, I was FASTER on the hike up Carlton Peak, than I was the flatish mile before it and the downhill mile after it.
Oberg Mountain to Caribou Highlands (finish) 7.1 miles
There’s no words to describe heading out for the last section, with my mom!

I skipped my intervals on Monday because of my long flight home. I left the hotel at 10am in London and didn't get home until after 10pm Eastern because my flight was delayed. I am considering making up my run today since Wednesdays are usually my rest day. This week I have to swap my Pace Run and Long Run because of my work schedule on Friday. This would force me to run 5 days in a row but I feel good enough to attempt it. The park I run in is a disaster because of a large festival being held in it this weekend so I ran yesterday on the treadmill and it looks like all my runs this week will be inside.
On the food side of things, I enjoyed a fantastic Thai dinner on Sunday and stayed within my calories (only because I skipped lunch and my pre-run snack). Monday was sort of out of control with airplane food. Even though I still managed to eek out 16,000 steps thanks to an early morning walk before I left for the airport, I still overate by almost 700 calories. BUT, I didn't let one day turn into a disaster and got right back on the horse yesterday. Since last Sunday, I am down 2.4lbs so not bad for a week and a half.7 -

I ran!
First time in New home I finally got out for a run. And it felt great. I knew I had to get out cause I was dreaming of running last night haha.
And excellent news I found my 5k route, and a challenge. There is a long hill, about 400m I think, towards the end of my 5k. My challenge is to run the whole thing by my birthday. That gives me two months. Easy!
All out furniture arrives today, and apparently some of it is a bit mouldy from 3 months storage in a friend's shed. Didn't realise it would be THAT damp. The couches etc are leather, so hopefully they will be ok. Planning on cleaning what we can with bleach and throwing the rest if it's too bad.
Really annoying but it's our own fault. The only things I really care about are metal/plastic. We have all our clothing etc and everything else is replaceable.10 -
So we had a really nice run at the Greenway, went back to the car for our towels and water bottles, took a walk, and got back to find someone had done a smash and grab and stolen both our run bags. Nothing in there of any value to anyone but us - just hundreds of dollars worth of run gear, asthma medication (over 100 dollars out of pocket) eyeglasses, testing kit and strips, just the hood to my good kalengi rain jacket, my makeup to the tune of about 200 bucks, sunblock, bandaids, buffs, gloves, arm sleeves, my favorite shirt to change into after running, spi belt, race dots, body glide, about a billion dollars worth of kt tape - seriously this is going to cost a fortune to replace and none of it has any resale value whatsoever so it’s of no benefit to the thieves. Germantown police were prompt and very nice and took prints from around the window, but of course there’s basically no hope of ever seeing anything again. Plus we have to get the window repaired.
The bags were out of sight and covered, for all the good that did. It’s doubly annoying to know that we probably wouldn’t have lost anything if it weren’t for a jerk taking up two parking spaces so we were forced to park really close to the street. We talked to another runner who passed the car and noticed the window, and based on when we started our walk there was about a fifteen minute time period when this guy hit us.
Really really annoying and especially since there is no time to order anything online before our race Saturday. But hey, no one died and we were carrying our id and keys so at least there’s that.21 -
5k before school again today. Don't think I added it to my ticker, so have added it now. Hope I haven't doubled up...
@MNLittleFinn amazing race report! Looking forward to reading each section!
@Avidkeo what a pain! Our car went a bit moldy last summer (don't ask) and upholstery cleaner got it all out amazingly well. Maybe try that?

@rheddmobile ugggh, I'm SO sorry that happened and your running treasures are gone0

@rheddmobile How awful! I hate that that happened to you. It's good that no one was hurt, but having to replace all of your stuff still sucks.0

More stumbling around in the dark for me this morning. It’s lovely running as the sun comes up, but avoiding broken paving and tree roots sticking out of the ground when it’s dark and there are lots of leaves on the floor can be quite tricky. Soooo much concentration required so early in the morning!!
