@hamsterwheel6 I know it doesn't make your swollen foot better, but it makes me feel a little better to know I'm not the only idiot out here telling myself it doesn't hurt and everything's fine. I'm still going to judge based on whether or not I can tell I'm limping. Tricky, since my gait has been a little lopsided for as long as I can remember - at least as far back as 6th grade when a friend mentioned it...
@Elise4270 I half remember treating toenail fungus with Apple Cider Vinegar, but it's been too long to recall specifics. I can only offer that I don't really mind losing a toenail - the one I damaged early in September was ready to go by the beginning of this month, and I started this challenge with only 9. I was happy enough to see it go. That's at least a full year before it slowly grows out to a point where I can damage it again! I might feel differently if the actual loss hurt more, but really, all the pain was during that first week when it was all swollen and I was too chicken to deal with it. After I stuck a needle behind my own toenail (my husband commented about that being a standard torture technique) to drain the blister fluid, everything was hunky dory, if a little less aesthetic. I'm here to fully support nail removal.
@shanaber Thanks, but it's my knee that's been acting up, and it's ... mostly behaving - you probably meant to console hamsterwheel6.3 -
Have you ever entered a race which used the plastic timing chips which are timed into your shoe lace? I found one at my September HM, picked it up so the original runner would at least get a finish time, even if it was wrong. (turns out it never registered with the timing mat).
I brought it home and took it apart. Here's what it looks like. A small copper coil attached to a microchip. The timing mat energizes the microchip via the copper coil, which then sends a signal to the timing mat with the bib number.

Nope not the only idiot, lol. I’m definitely limping haha, no way around that.

Yes a couple times actually. The last race I was in had those. Cool to see the inside and how they work!0 -
Hey y’all,
Anyone ever have a nail fungus? I know it’s gross. But damaged runners toenails are more susceptible to nail fungus. I took oral meds, it tried to kill my liver. So today I have an appointment to either have it removed or do the laser treatment. Anyone have experience? Is the laser worth it? I’m thinking I’m going to just be brave and have it removed.
My sister is currently having laser treatment for a toenail fungus - she says it feels like someone is stabbing her toe a million times with a needle (she has a very high pain tolerance level). She has to have four sessions. Me, I damaged my toenail and it is currently off and starting to regrow. With summer and open toe shoes just a couple of months away, it's going to be an unattractive one for me. I'd err on the more pain keep the nail side personally, and I'm hopeless with pain. Also, having no toenail is uncomfortable in yoga and whenever one of my children stands on my foot, which happens way more often than you'd thing and way more than I'd like.3 -

Hey thanks! I hope it’s nothing serious...it hurts more now than it did when I twisted it.1 -
@Elise4270
i just use athlete's foot cream. i got it at the gym and sometimes it revisits me. though after the "scabies" scare, it hasn't been back1 -

Thanks for the info. I’m not happy to hear that the laser is painful. It is sold as pain free. My visit was not productive. I was honest about how I still took two months of the oral meds without doc clearance. Hey, a bad patient that let the doc know, is better than one that lies.
I was told, since I’d taken it, it might grow out fine since the oral Med kills the fungus... uh no it doesn’t. It merely keeps it from growing where the nail is now impregnated with the med... *kitten*. He won’t pull it off because there’s a chance of poor healing... really? How so?... And no laser because it might grow out. *kitten*. Oh but come back in 8-10 months when it’s really bad and we can do 100 years of laser treatment
Suppose I’ll call my regular doc and see if he is willing to pull it off. Or if he says the same thing, then I’ll mentally apologize to dr *kitten*. Dh said I’m in a bad mood.9 -
Long time away, but off to a good start. I have a half marathon planned for November 9th. The weather has finally been cooler. I achieved my goal last month of 25 miles; shortened goal due to being on vacation for 2 weeks.
My new goal for this month is 50 miles. I think that it is an attainable goal.
10/4......7.05 miles.
10/6.....6.01 miles.
10/7....2.03 miles.
10/10...2.87 miles. Running on the White River Green way. Had to avoid limbs cut down by Indianapolis Power and Light. A deer (Probably a fawn) was staring me down from the top of a hill. I guess he got bored and leaped back into the woods.
10/13....6.04 miles Cooler weather, about 65 degrees. Felt great after 3.25 miles in. Had a few beers watching the Deep Purple concert. So had to shake that off. Leaves on the trees are still pretty green.
Almost halfway to goal. Driving to Iowa this weekend to watch the Hawkeyes and visit my sister and brother-in-law. Running this week will be kind of spotty. Probably some short runs of 2-3 miles.
Total miles.....24.01
Goal miles....50

Chicago Marathon on Sunday. My BG crashed and I was taking in a lot of carbs on the course to manage hypoglycemia. Also, because my BG was moving so fast, my CGM failed and I had to spend a lot of time testing with my glucometer instead of just looking at the screen as I kept moving. Stopping to do that takes time.
Otherwise, great race, great crowds, great weather.

Are you seeing a podiatrist or a regular GP? Is your podiatrist a runner? I strongly recommend finding a running podiatrist (female too, if having pretty toes is a priority) the others often just don’t get it.6 -

I had a rare Monday with no meetings scheduled, and it was a nice morning, so I took the opportunity to go to a morning run club instead of waiting until tonight's group. The group workout was hills but I was there just for a sharpener, which coach has us do 5 days before race day. It is one single hard interval of 3 minutes (sometimes up to 5 minutes if that coincides with the group workout of the day, but luckily today was just 3). We ran a 10-minute warm-up then everyone did the 3-minute interval with me. I went out way too hard and at the 90 second turnaround felt terrible, which was not very confidence-building. I realized after that my pace was way too fast and the second half was much more reasonable (but felt slow and awful at the time). Coach says this is all normal and it will keep me from feeling terrible on Saturday. I hope so! I did a 10-minute cooldown by myself and then hung out some while they finished the hill workout, and then we jogged back to the gym.
All the hard running is done. Just one easy run Wednesday and 15-minute shakeout on Friday, and then it's race time. I feel all kinds of crappy and I'm hoping it all comes together. There are a lot of logistics to this trip for two races and I don't have the time or the energy really to spend on it right now. Maybe tomorrow will be the day to get on top of it!
@shanaber thanks - all is well since the allergic reaction on Friday. My doctor is out of town so I don't know yet what she'll want me to do for follow-up but I'm being cautious about anything that I had that day and the day before just in case. Which is bumming me out about fish, because I really want to go out for sushi!

@mbaker566 That's a long line for the portapotty! Sounds like you had a decent race AND the puppies! Way too cute! I probably wouldn't have left. Who doesn't love a puppy?!
@hamsterwheel6 Sorry to hear about your injury. Hope it is only mild. What kind of Garmin do you have that sends incident reports to your husband? That sounds like a great thing to have.

Thanks, I hope so too, though it doesn’t look or feel mild today, will assess tomorrow. I have a 245 Forerunner. It is a great thing to have. This is the second time it’s alerted him (you enter whatever emergency contact you want)..the first was when the instant I popped my calf muscle, and now this sprain. It’s quite accurate, to the moment of the incident. Sends the east coordinates you are at as well if you need to.3 -

My wife has. Eventually the only way to beat it, for her, was to go to the docs and do two rounds (each round was like 2 weeks I think) of medication and then wait for the nail to grow out. None of the over the counter or home remedies worked.
YMMV and all that.2 -
@martaindale great 10 mile race. That's the way to get your PR!
@Tramboman congrats on the AG place! Doesn't matter how many were in your AG, you came out on top!
Beautiful morning with 60F, light wind. Training plan calls for 35 miles this week, but the PTC 15K is this Saturday, so will only get 9 miles in. Needing to make up for that, decided to run 10 miles this morning. Felt terrible the first mile, but body parts loosened up, aches and pains calmed down, and eventually settled into a good rhythm. Wednesday calls for an 11 mile tempo run, but this 'easy' run was only :06/mi slower than that, so should be ok. May have to do a few miles on Thursday when I get to Atlanta. So much for tapering before a race 😒
I ALWAYS try to run like a 5k the day before a big race. If it is a short race, I do not taper at all, but for example the day before the Pittsburgh Marathon, I run the Pittsburgh 5k. The trick is to run it much slower than normal. So say your paces is 10 mins, run at 12 or 13 mins then.
FOR ME I find I am stiff and struggle much more the first mile or 3 if I have not run in the day or 2 leading up to the race.
YMMV of course and I am not a doctor nor trainer, but I have put a lot of miles on my shoes.

Today I ran another half marathon, by accident. 🤦♂️I had gotten a late start so decided to run ten miles or so. So I am out there pounding away and I check my watch to see where I am at. It reads 4.83 miles. So I did some mental math and decided I need to turn around at 6.5 miles to get 10 miles. The path I was running was an out and back, so 6.5 out.. is 6.5 back... and not exactly the same thing as 10 miles.

Amazing run this evening! By amazing, I just mean I’m so glad I did it at all. I have been awake since 4am (my son had a school trip which meant an early flight), worked a ten hour day, and still went to run. Even after having some oatmeal pumpkin breakfast cookie I made this morning 😂😂😂 so all in all, a slightly uncomfortable run, but I kept going and finished strong. It was perfect weather on a trail Ive never run before (and always want to but can’t because of kid needs). Here’s to another week of crushing goals!11
