February 2020 Monthly Running Challenge

No run yesterday, but did manage to get lots of things done. Church, tear down after service, Old Navy with the kids, climbing gym, meal prepping for myself for a week's worth of breakfast and lunch at work (this, I have never done so successfully, and in only one hour!), packed lunches, laundry, laid out clothes, etc. Quite a productive day. Also here is a photo of me, petrified, in the climbing gym. I am deathly afraid of falling, though not afraid of being high up. I know, I'm so weird.

@Camaramandy648 That looks like fun!0 -
Strength training then a slow 3 miles. I ran by feel and my pace was slower than expected, but that’s ok. I felt like I could keep running another couple miles at that pace. Barely noticed any hamstring tightness, so I guess that means rehab is working as expected. It seemed really humid and warm for February.8

I'm up past my bedtime. I am excited about the new car that wasn't even on my "makes and models to consider" list. My husband saw the picture online and knew I'd be interested. It is more efficient than my specifications, and the correct shape, but without roof racks or a physical trunk keyhole. I never even looked at the brakes, nor tested the heater. I am a little concerned about making the payments, but the loan is only a 36 month obligation. I like the interior layout pretty well, and am pleased to have found something only 6 years old without a full screen of extra electronic baloney. There appears to be a back-up camera, but absolutely no screen to view any output on. Now I must find a way to dispose of the Aveo, so I can park my new baby in the driveway. We're favoring fire and explosives.11 -
@shanaber congrats on your race! Glad you were able to complete it and did better than expected. Sounds like a great race. How was your knee after that?
@Camaramandy648 what's going on there - I haven't seen those kinds of tower things at a climbing gym. Do you just kind of shimmy up them? That seems hard.
@autumnblade75 congrats on your new ride!

I left work about 4:45 and it was beautiful and surprisingly warm (like 40) so I was happy it was a good night for running group. Of course as soon as it got dark the temps dropped. I took the dog for a quick walk and got all chilled and then headed to group - having lost my enthusiasm about a nice evening. But once we started running of course it was fine. The workout was a 15-minute tempo. We did 10 minutes warm-up, 15 minute tempo, 4 sprints and then 10 minutes cooldown. My pace was pretty steady in the first half, I knew I wasn't going at full effort though. I worked out some stiffness/soreness and picked it up a little in the second half.

Short run with the dog. It was cool and windy out.
2.35 today for a monthly total of 9.15 so far.7 -
@PastorVincent it was SO much fun!
@katharmonic hahaha no. That is the kids’ section - the idea is to use the tops of the “buildings” and walk, step, or hop on each one until you get to the top. Then you jump off, because there’s a belayer. You’re tied off the whole time! I got to maybe like twenty feet and decided to shimmy down. The tallest one is fifty+ feet. My kids had no problems jumping!
I used to go cliff jumping when I was a kid - ALL THE TIME - and I have enjoyed Ziplining as well. But as an adult, I am SO afraid of falling from high up. Even on road trips, when we cross a bridge, ESPECIALLY if it is over water, I roll all the windows down and hold my breath. I’m super super weird about it, lol
But the gym was a ton of fun and I am so sore today. I’ll call it a good recovery workout, haha5 -
Thanks everyone! @mbaker566, @Teresa502 and anyone else thinking about coming to So CA for a running vacation. Let me know and I can recommend races and places to run at different times of the year. There are quite a few HMs and Marathons but not so many 5 and 10k races.
Also interesting item I read about the race - they said both the HM and marathon distances sold out with 14,500 and 2500 entrants respectively. The results show only 9438 places for the HM and 1349 places for the marathon. Is it possible that more than a third of the HM entrants DNF'd or DNS'd? That seems crazy high to me.
So far no news on any of the runners down that I could find.
@autumnblade75 - cute car!
@katharmonic - knee was ok, legs in general have been sorer than after previous races but an epsom bath soak, foam rolling and a good walk today helped. I had cramps in my calves most of the afternoon yesterday and I think I just needed some salt.
I wore the wrong shoes to agility class though tonight and slipped as I was turning and went down. To avoid landing on my knees I rolled onto my back which at the time seemed to work just fine but now my knee is sore in a different area. I iced it as soon as we got home so I am hoping it will be fine and not blown up like a balloon tomorrow.7 -
@Avidkeo maybe the Brooks I wear are wider in that part of the foot. They're definitely more comfortable. Although at one point I had a different model of Asics that also seemed to fit better. They were in a higher price range than the current ones. I was also running downhill when it started, so the pressure had probably also shifted slightly to a different part of my foot.
@LoveyChar you are right that some of it is probably muscle, because I am almost fine with how I look in the mirror, but generally the weight came on when I cut back on running and started pigging out because "I'm in taper mode" and "I just ran a marathon" mode. I've got a weight range I like to stay in, and am almost back into it.5 -
I don't have a set distance, but looking to get comfortable (again!) with a 5km a couple of times a week and move up to 10km training by the end of the month!10

3.99 miles yesterday afternoon, woo! That’s the longest I’ve ran since getting sick at the beginning of January, so it feels like a pretty good accomplishment, even if it was a bit tough at times and I had to take a few walk breaks. Also, the weather and road conditions were a bit awful - not too cold in the high 20s, but damp and a little windy, plus LOTS of ice on the ground from Sunday’s melt. I almost wiped out walking to the lake, which thankfully was pretty clear. If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a million times - I am much less likely to slip while running than walking. I have no idea how common that is, but there you are.
I deeply missed my windbreaker on this run - it no longer fits since gaining weight last year. Sadly, the one I bought last year is discontinued, but luckily, I just found another one from the same brand (North Face) for half off at the REI Outlet store, so that will be in my hot little hands by Monday!
But other than all that, it was a great run!
Always worth a reminder: wearing too-tight clothing does NOT encourage me to lose weight, but only to feel uncomfortable and bad about myself. Also, while running may be more difficult with the extra weight, it’s still awesome, and only makes me stronger.

Urg. I couldn't run today. Too hot. Too humid.
I had every intention of heading out at 7:30 once the sun had gone down but it was stinking hot and super humid. I'm sitting here now at nearly 10pm at it's still 24 degrees (about 75˚F) and 72 percent humidity. Bleugh.
However, this non running may not be the end of the world. My half on Sunday clashes with my daughter's first triathlon (she's 7) so one of us can't do our chosen event. Because my half is part of a series, as long as I run the official course some time in the next 15 days and submit my Garmin data, I can still earn series points. It's a public holiday here on Thursday so I'm heading out super early with a friend or two to do it. Could be a bit tricky hitting race pace, but points is points. Bling is bling (they'll give it to me at the next event). It's be tricky without marshals, but the course is fairly straightforward (on paper) and hopefully we won't miss a turn.
TLDR: I'm tapering.12 -

Wow! Impressive! I am many times her age and have not done a tri yet!

Welcome!1 -
@marisap2010 – Do you think you felt so good after your 20-mile run because you slowed your pace for your friend? Maybe you were just in the zone?
No, I was feeling really good before she slowed down. It got to a point where she needed to walk some, and I really wanted to keep running.
2 -
@ContraryMaryMary Your 7 year old is going a tri? That is crazy! What are the distances for each section- just curious?1
-
I was really tired last night due to being awake since 3am from an emergency call from the prison, so I only did 1 mile on the indoor track last night and spent the remaining gym time on the bike and doing some light arm weights.
23 miles for February thus far8 -
@shanaber Great race! Hope that wasn't your last
@autumnblade75 congrats on the car. I know what you mean about "wasn't even on my 'makes and models to consider' list". More than once I have gone into a dealership with one or two models in mind, and drove away with something completely different. I guess I'm a pushover for a good deal. But most of the time it has worked out. Good luck with yours!
@ContraryMaryMary Super impressed with your 7 year old daughter doing a tri! That takes a lot of guts and determination (more than I will ever have).0 -
@autumnblade75 Glad you found a car that you like. It looks really nice. Not sure why they would have a backup camera without a screen though. I love my back up camera. I can parallel park now. LOL
@shanaber Glad your knees are doing better. Hope the fall didn't give you a set-back.

Some cars use the rearview mirror as a screen for it.

@autumnblade75 What a great color!
@MegaMooseEsq Our next two races are the same! I'm hoping it won't be too cold on Saturday.
Travelling for work today so had the always-fun hotel treadmill experience.

My goals for 2020 are to stay injury free and healthy. I am also possibly going to try again for my first half marathon.
February goal : 70 miles
Plan goal: 76 miles
2/1 - 6 miles
2/3. - 3 miles
2/4 - 2 miles
Monthly total - 11 miles
I have been having some knee pain so I switched to my new pair of Hoka Arahi's to check if it's my shoes and of course it is. Not sure if it's a good or a bad thing. I am only getting about 150 miles out of them before I need new ones which seems really low. If this keeps up, I'm going to need a second job just to stay in running shoes.
Races:
March 14:
St. Malachi 2 mile and 5 mile
May 16:
Cleveland Marathon Half and 5k
June 13 - 14:
Run and Ride Cedar Point 5k and Quarter Marathon

brooks are wider. asics are narrow. saucony are wider. altras are inbetween. i haven't found my merrels to be too narrow either.
i know brooks and saucony are wider because my feet are borderline. and i got fitted for them and was told by the store people they were wider. i can't wear asics because they are too narrow. i was fitted for the altras too.4 -
02/02 8km
04/02 5km
Total 13km of 70km for February
The weather was perfect, but a bit chilly, this morning. I've been going out around half-seven two days a week, before work, since the beginning of January and it's been awesome noticing the sun being higher in the sky at the same time each successive run. When I first started I would just be getting home as dawn broke. This morning it was blinding me as I ran back!
Goals for the year:
1. Get back down to a decent running weight (currently set at 160lb)
2. Run a sub-60 minute 10K
3. Run at least 4 10K races
Current races planned:
14/06 Lincoln 10K
??/10 Autumn Richmond Riverside Run8 -
alright, it just got real.
i registered for my 50k. and the trainer said she'll get a plan together in the next 24 hours or so.19 -
