Meditation has been a pillar of my health practice for over 40 years. I first started with guided meditations on cassette tapes (remember those?) Then I learned the practice of focusing on breath alone, with no accompanying sound. Then about 5 years ago found the Insight Timer app (free!), and have been using guided meditations ever since. I currently have a streak on Insight Timer over 1000 days in a row. The app has a plethora of different types, subjects, durations and skill levels of meditations, guided and non-guided. There is NO WAY I could cope with the day to day rigors of being a caregiver to DH with dementia without the calm strength I've been cultivating through daily meditation. I usually do mine lying in bed, around dawn after DH and the cat have gotten up and are back in bed, and all is quiet.

I have tried meditation sitting walking and my favorite lying down. I have done it to speech, birdsong, quiet, and my favorite, new age slow chimes music. I like to do it but I forget too often to call it a regular practice.

Today we've been working on cleaning our ovens. One went like clock work. The other is a pain in the neck. We rented a blower to evacuate the smoke that the automatic oven cleaning feature is generating. The first blower didn't work so I took it back and was given another that is working right now. It is both effective and NOISY. Since it is working well, I'm choosing to be grateful that its getting the job done. :grumble: :bigsmile:

Nice quiet day here, no pounding on the roof. It rained yesterday and no leaks. Yay! The YM pool is open again and I am really looking forward to water exercise tomorrow. Black bean soup for dinner.
Amber - Only 50 pounds?? That is 2/3s of your goal woman. Wish that I could say that.
Katla - Hope you had a good lesson yesterday and Arrow was a gentleman.

I read Jon Kabat-Zinn's Full Catastrophe Living and have used his CDs for meditation. I enjoy doing walking meditations with breathing and mantras timed to the steps such as "I breathe in joy, I breathe out peace." I do one step for each word. I have better luck with this than sitting many times. I have also done guided meditation with crystal bowls, very interesting.

When the probiotic fad started I read an article about our ancestors having better gut health than we do today. The article stated they ate more fermented and pickled foods.. I tried to locate it and it's buried by so much newer information.
I tried fermenting my own vegetables and did not really enjoy the results. I will try some pickling in the future. For now, I'll stick with yogurt, kimchi, and sauerkraut (store bought).

My friend Lynette is surrounded by family and dear friend Shona this morning in Colorado. Shona stayed through the night so Lynette's husband Rod could get some sleep.
I commented yesterday that today would be Lynette's mother's 84th birthday and Shona replied that she & Rod thought it would be perfect if Lynette joined her mother on her birthday.
Shona said Lynette held her own through the night, and seemed to be waiting for Rod to get to the nursing home this morning. Now that he's there, Shona says Lynette seems to be letting go.
Whoever said that a person with Alzheimer's dies twice was spot on. I didn't really know it until now.

Vitamins & minerals ... I take lots. Vit A, B, D, E, Zinc, Folic Acid, Calcium, Magnesium, Fish Oil, Evening Primrose Oil, Garlic
Sometimes C, Glucosamine Valerian, Ginkgo Biloba, and a Stress multi.
Never Iron and Turmeric
Meditation ... no.
I feel like if I relax or pursue the elusive "happiness" I won't be able to channel the inner anger as well when dealing with my husband's situation.
I was an angry teenager and into my early 20s. Very quick temper.
Then for some reason I relaxed ... whatever will be will be. I got stuff done but I more or less went with the flow. And since I'm very quiet, shy, introverted etc in real life that suited me. Years went by like that.
When my husband had his accident, all of a sudden the angry teenager returned. I've surprised myself many times in the last year!! I hear this person yelling over the phone and wonder who on earth she is!! Fortunately I haven't had to yell lately, but I have needed to tap into the new assertive me several times.
I'm not prepared to fully let the angry teenager go yet.
That said, probably my favourite time of day is the 1-2 hours after my husband has gone to bed, and I've turned the TV off, most of the lights off, and the soft music on. I am usually doing homework or something but it's quiet, I'm almost off duty, and I can relax a bit.
Diets ... Do what works best for you.
I do a sort of Intermittent Fasting because that's just the way I eat. I start about noon and stop about midnight and have done for years.
I lean toward a Mediterranean Diet with a vegetarian influence because I like that sort of food.
And I am a fuel eater. I don't like lingering over a dinner because I always feel I've got better things to do. My husband tends to linger. In a restaurant, I'll finish my meal and with the last gulp still going down, I'm packing up to go ... meanwhile, he's still lingering over his coffee. When we go out, I have to remember to make a point of just sitting there doing nothing for a few minutes after my last gulp ... then I can start to pack up to go!
But whatever your way of eating, it all boils down to CICO.
CI < CO = weight loss
CI = CO = maintain weight
CI > CO = weight gain

Brother came through procedure well. He was really very frightened. Told his wife and I that while he was sure nothing bad would happen, in case it did he wanted us to know he loves us. He then apologized to me for how he treated me when we were kids-rambled about something he didn't realize kids were different. Have no idea what he was talking about, but whatever he remembered he needed to get off his chest. I told him I don't ever remember him being a bad brother. He is very loving. We are, however, concerned that he may have dementia or altzheimers. He is also concerned-knows his short term memory is not good. Will know pathology report next week. Doctor told family even if it is cancer, he is convinced it would be very early and very treatable.
Got to FaceTime with Logan before I left for the hospital. He told me he had an owie as he pointed to splint. Then told me he loved me and babbled about his toys. Got a picture of him later in the day playing. DIL texted he took a good long nap today-he undoubtedly needed the rest after the trauma and medications yesterday.
Meeting went well. Was able to make decent dinner choices. Even fit in a small desert. Did treadmill after dinner so I have well over 11,000 steps today. After logging as honestly as I could, still show a comfortable deficit but that will help even out guesstimates.
Going to see if I can sleep well in hotel. Luckily, room is at far end of hallway so no one walks by and is not near elevators.

Good workout today!
Walked to Pilates
Pilates focused on the things mentioned in the Run Strong class yesterday: glutes & core with a little bit of arms and hamstrings thrown in .
Walked back from Pilates.
And I've done 36 flights of 20 stairs at a slightly faster pace than usual.
Yesterday I discovered I was huffing and puffing like a steam engine during the warm up so I figured I'd better add a bit more intensity to my workouts. I know I can get a bit lazy ... I'm moving but I really could be moving faster!

I take vit D, for our cloudy weather. Plus the fact that I don't go outside much and don't like the sun! My levels are fine.
I have watched many (eg Michael Moseley) programmes about vitamins and supplements and the scientific consensus is that they do nothing whatsoever and you are wasting your money as it is all excreted in urine. Unless your diet is severely unbalanced you will be getting everything you need from your food.
Ditto glucosamine and all the other stuff the drug companies peddle us. None of it works on blind trials. It's a con.
With probiotics, similarly nothing gets through to the gut except whole milk yoghurt. Save your money and don't buy commercially produced nonsense. The important thing is to eat a rainbow of beans, lentils, vegetables and fruit. Avoid commercially packaged food. Your guts will be wonderful!

March: get Shingrix vaccine, follow up for DEXA scan appt. Reward: inventory seeds, plan garden, order replenishments.
Welcome patricialeonard, don’t have any reduced fat tips, but believe increasing activity is key to losing weight. Start small and find things you like doing, like dancing, swimming, walking. Would you consider supplements? Milk Thistle is said to have beneficial effects on the liver.

Nicknames: Papa called me “Dolly” perhaps because I was his little doll. In elementary school they called me Barbwire because my legs were so skinny (oh for those days again!) Only my uncle Charlie was ever allowed to call me “Barbie.” In my career I worked right next to another, petite, Barbara. She was a little taller than I but by no means a “Big Barbara” and I (in my mid 20’s) resolutely refused to be the “Old Barbara” so we took our initials, she was BB and I was BK … for more than 40 years in the industry. Then when my BFF had a daughter, I became “auntie bk” and now you know the rest of the story.

Karen - Thank you for sharing the photo of you girls in your wonderful prime. It's important to remember our friends as they were. My thoughts are with you at this time. We have yet to lose one of our school group, but time rushes on. It will be a terrible bereavement when it comes. Our sense of self is tied up with them.

Vitamins-I take Vitamin D. Have had deficiency in the past and it was miserable. With my thyroid suppression therapy (no thyroid, take meds at a level to keep me below normal), it has an impact on Vitamin D and I am to keep it at a higher level). Take a pre and post biotic and d mannose. Someone here recommended those for recurrent UTI issues and they do seem to help (took for several weeks then stopped and went back on since I could tell a difference). Other than that, try to eat fairly well and all levels look good.
Didn't sleep overly well (typical for one night in hotel). Went out this morning and walked outside for about 20 minutes. Getting ready to go sit in meetings. Should be finished in time to get back home and get to gym. Won't be able to workout Wednesday due to time of Ash Wednesday service and choir is singing.
Hope everyone has good day. Thanks for your positive thoughts for my brother and Logan.

Morning ladies
Up and took a bath and had a cup of tea we will be going down to breakfast in a bit.. like I told you will be picked up at 12:16 pm to fly from Cusco to Lima have a long layover there and then board our flight home 12 :05 am for the flight back to the US. We will get to Connecticut around noon tomorrow...long travel day..

Hi, I’m new here and only a couple of weeks in. My first week I lost almost 10 pounds of which I know was water weight. I just weighed myself and I only lost .9 pound! I’m sticking to my diet, eating good foods and walking 5 miles a day every morning for excruciating. I didn’t expect to lose another 9 pounds but not even losing a whole pound was just depressing. Anyone else been through this? I only started to have a weight issue in my forties and because of this stopped working out altogether. I’m trying to get down a total of forty pounds. My thyroid has been checked and I have already gone through the change. Any help ladies who are in my age range??

Ginny - I also take D Mannose. It was Kate UK's consultant who recommended it, so I thought I would give it a go. So far it has worked brilliantly. Even if it is voodoo it helps me keep calm when I get a twinge and I just take a couple more. No cystitis yet.
My DH has just been rung by the doctor for a recall on his recent blood test. Of course we are both worried as to what that means. I suspect it is his prostate. He goes on Thursday.
I hope he will be able to sleep.

Keep coming back to read this thread every day, log your food and learn about the nutrition and calories they provide, seek every opportunity to be active, do not be discouraged by anything that the scale tells you.
