My goals for 2020 are to stay injury free and healthy. I am also possibly going to try again for my first half marathon.

Weekend away with DH was nice and the break from running was good. The downside was I gained 4 pounds but those will come off fast LOL.
Had to rearrange my running week to avoid another storm rolling through this week. Today was the best weather day of the week so long run day it became. There is a big difference between 8 miles on a treadmill and 8 miles with 4 of it being hills. I hit the end of a lap at 7.3 miles and thought about stopping but my legs wouldn't let me make that turn to the parking lot so I had to hit another half a lap of hills. Hate when that happens but I got in the full 8. Next week is a cut back week with no long run and I can't wait.

Oh, it is great fun, but that is in part because of the competition with my son. My endurance running has given me an edge to handled the longer songs, but his better rhythm and much greater time to play are slowly edging me out.3 -
I finally caught up! Well, sort of - I started reading again on page 40, so if you posted before the 18th, I offer hugs, condolences, and congratulations as appropriate.
It has been 11 days since my last run, which was my first run in seven days. Suffice it to say, this will not be the month I return to the 50 mile club. I think my last post was my race report for the Valentine’s Day 5K, so basically that went great and then I had an attack of the weasels and another new project at work so mostly didn’t leave the house for a week until it was time to run with my running buddy again. So it goes.
I saw my primary care physician on Monday the 17th and she prescribed a new anti-anxiety med to try and help me get to sleep. I gave it a try that night and woke up with what I can only assume was food poisoning - I contacted my doctor right away and her nurse assured me that neither the med nor the flu shot should have had that result. I'd eaten some unwashed oranges the night before so that was probably what caused it. Fun!
So I decided not to work out during the two days when I couldn’t eat solid foods, or on the following couple of days of white rice and apple sauce. I was feeling much better on Saturday, so I decided to throw caution to the wind and go out for sushi and birthday drinks with a friend. This was not a wise decision and led to another couple of days of rice and apple sauce. Learn from my mistakes!
In any case, the plan for today was to shove my poor self back into my workout pants and see about getting to the gym under my own power for the noon class. Unfortunately, my intestines are doing some rumbling AGAIN so I might take a nap instead and see how I feel for the 4PM class. My diet is normally about 70% fruit and cheese, so I’m really struggling with keeping the innards happy right now.
@janejellyroll: I saw your race report, and holy cow! I feel pretty blasé about running in the cold most fo the time, but that was a COLD morning and I would definitely have made the same decision if I were in your shoes. Also, I saw in a later post that you’re in a local running team - which one? I’ve been thinking about finding a group for long runs at some point when I’m actually doing long runs again.10 -

Oh yeah, I chocolate milk. I even had some before you posted. I prefer the powdered (store version of nesquik) kind, though.
And now @janejellyroll has me thinking about bagels. I'm sure someone in this country is selling them. Maybe they're right there in the store bakery and I haven't noticed? Are they hard to make, I wonder?
Eta: I went to the internet and there's a restaurant downtown serving bagels and getting amazing reviews. Also I found recipes and it's worth a try! Plus an excuse to use the giant dough hook on the kitchen machine9 -

Cloudy, foggy, 41 degrees F with hardly no wind today. Had trouble maintaining my breathing rhythm; just forgot about it and suddenly found myself breathing in rhythm without having to think about it.
My standard post run intake is a bottle of Gatorade G2 and a chocolate Muscle Milk.
Next year when you pop in here claiming your December 2020 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?

This morning I ran 5 miles with my group and then drove to my work, parked and started the watch again for another 3.1 miles. And with that I made my February goal! Nice morning with temp at 45F. The next few days, the high is supposed to be 35 and chances of snow.
I'm usually not hungry after a long run either but the next day I want to eat everything - more so than usual!

@MegaMooseEsq I'm with the Mill City Running club. They're amazingly welcoming to all speeds, do a good number of local races, and have regularly scheduled runs. There is a once-a-month long run that is for club members, but the Tuesday night, Wednesday night, Friday morning, and another once-a-month long run that are open to everyone. You also get a discount on everything in the shop if you're a club member. The shop is in NE, so the long runs are usually along the river.

I have always heard about chocolate milk as the best for recovery. I will need to try just the syrup now though because when I buy actual chocolate milk, no one really drinks it but me after long runs and then it expires. So good idea.
I can't eat right after either, but I know I will feel so much better the rest of the day if I do. Usually have a homemade egg Mcmuffin with turkey sausage. Or a bagel.

7 plus a bit miles today. Foggy and mid 50's. Felt good in capris and and tank and long t (which came off half way through). But of course its going to be cold again the rest of the week. @kgirlhart I too am just wanting to put on shorts and tank and go. This roller coaster weather makes it so difficult in figuring out what to wear sometimes.

Thanks for the input. I’ll check Fleet Feet. I went to a running store that was well known here years ago and got the completely wrong shoes. I do have custom orthotics so want to make sure I find the right ones not the ones they’re pushing. Run lab might be good to work on my form and get their opinion....trying to solve the hip flexor mystery.
Sorry....thank you @hamsterwheel6 .....for the Fleet Feet rec. We do have one here. And a few newish running stores that got good recs.
Good idea - they will also scan your foot, and bonus they give you 90 days to try the shoes! At least ours does.1 -

Yeah, I get a container of Hersey Special Dark and use it as needed.
I forget the numbers, but the reason it works is because it just happens to hit the correct macros of Fat/Sugar/Protein for recovery. IME it really does work. After a long run I will drink 12-16 oz of it before I shower, and by the time I am out of the shower I am feeling much better.
Plus I find it yummy so there is that5 -

@LoveyChar I think all the trails in the Memphis area count as easy or moderate - but I don’t know much about how different levels of technical trails are graded, so I looked it up and all I could find was this guide which is from South Africa. It says in other places that this same system is used worldwide though. Does anyone else know more about this?

My husband and I always plan to walk a trail before running it, so we know what to expect. In the case of signing up for a destination race, most trail races will let you know on the website roughly what you are in for before you sign up, or you can generally find reviews of the park or trail system. There are trails which are wide and even groomed dirt roads, and then there’s the Barkley Marathons! In between the two extremes there’s a lot of different types of trail. In general if a race is on a mountain it’s probably going to be extreme, and if it’s in a suburban park it’s probably pretty mild.
Looking at this grading system, the 10k race I just ran had about half a mile of true single track where passing was impossible and you were brushing trees with your shoulders, a couple of long stretches which count as off-trail because they were through an ungroomed grassy meadow, a handful of minor places where you had to go up and down obstacles and ditches, two fallen trees which had to be either jumped or climbed over, a couple of places you needed to duck or get a branch in the face, and of course the long muddy intervals. I would say it was something between orange “moderately easy” and green “moderate challenging” mainly because of the mud - in the dry season it would count as
easy, with half a mile of knee deep mud it was challenging.
@quilteryoyo I felt for the poor kid with no shoes! He wasn’t there when we came back around so I assume he fished around in the mud until he found them. Every year people lose their shoes at that point, last year it was a college age lady. Last year when we were coming back there was a tall, very athletic looking younger man running with us - I can only assume he was recovering from an injury or something, since he was clearly faster than we were - and when we reached the second stretch of mud he said, “That’s it, I have had enough mud for one day, I am done.” And he wasn’t kidding, he stopped dead! Since you have to cross the mud to get back to the parking lot from there I assume he did eventually, but we never saw him again!
So, yesterday my husband and I gave ourselves a treat as a reward for finishing the Winter off-road series - we went to the park where the race was held and WALKED five miles! Just wandered around and enjoyed nature, no sweat involved. Since the tendons in my legs took a beating in the last race and were still sore, and last year I had a tendon blow out shortly after finishing this series, I felt like an extra rest day was a good idea. My goal is to get to Easter without an injury, after two years in a row of getting injured at the same time of year! I start ramping up in the spring and my old body just can’t take it apparently. So I am being extra cautious. We did run about a mile off and on to keep from getting chilly, but that was it.
Anyway we had a great time, saw many deer, many wild birds, and walked out as close to the edge of the Epic Bog as we could get without getting mud over the tops of our shoes. So I got a couple of photos. We always wish we could get some of this area during the race, because without a couple of hundred people cursing, struggling, and losing shoes, you can’t really appreciate how deep the mud is. But it’s still pretty chewed up and nasty looking! It’s also worth mentioning that you can’t avoid the mud by going off trail, since the edge of the trail is grassy tussocks in standing water, mixed with blackberry brambles!10 -
NYC Marathon lottery is over, I wasn't drawn as per usual.
With the 9+1 runners and the increase in lottery entries, odds were about 2.3% this year. My odds may as well be 0% every year. From what I can tell, they are actually 0%. I'll try again next year anyway so I can get rejected again. 😢13 -

My goal for February is 135 miles. I'm at 112 at the moment, with 30 more planned for February, but I'm not sure if I'll get all of those miles in.
I hope you have all been doing wonderfully, and running without pain or injury!
I posted this at the end of the January thread but I'll post here as well so you don't have to go back to read it:A rather paltry January for me. It was my lowest mileage every for January, finishing at 63 miles. Reason for the lower total include continued recovery from my ultras last fall (at least that's the excuse I came up with), deciding not to run when my college son was home because it took time away from being with him, and a crazy work schedule that finally seems to be easing up.
I did run one race, the Securian Winter Half Marathon in St. Paul, MN. My intent when signing up was to actually train for it and get a PR, but that didn't happen and though I did beat my revised goal (based on my lame training) it was my slowest of the three HMs I've run, but I'm happy with it. My time was about 1:56:27. My PR is nearly 5 minutes faster than that.
February is going much better and I'm up to 112 miles already, including my first 50K of the year. I'll post about that in February's thread.9 -

Just 4 miles today. I ran them at an average of 10:00/mile, though. Admittedly in 2 chunks...
My brother has decided that he Has Other Plans That Day, After All. I couldn't leave well enough alone, and suggested that he select a race for us, then. We shall see how this turns out.

I finally got back my running club! I did the 1 mile with a leader and a new runner. It was very slow, not really any faster than walking but i managed to run unbroken. We did 1.5 miles in the end! I was a bit wobbly at the end, and wheezy but manageable, but it feels so good to have done it.10

My next race is coming up in 2.5 weeks. I've mentioned it before but was AWOL from here when I actually signed up. Well, I'm now signed up for the Sandlot Marathon, a marathon on a baseball diamond. Just 384.55 laps around the bases. It's not for everyone. The absurdity of the race is what appeals to me. That and that fact that I'll know half the people there.
This would be a great race for @AlphaHowls .

Husband's dad runs the Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon every year and this year is the 40th anniversary. He wants to run it with his dad this year (October) but he wants to take the baby. I can't leave because my 13 year-old can't miss school. I told him no. Baby, biggest momma's boy ever on a plane without me. No. Several states away. No. Then I realized/remembered that he didn't object profusely when I took little guy several states away on a plane for 2 1/2 weeks last summer. I'm torn, conflicted. What would you do? Am I being irrational or completely rational?4

@LoveyChar I think you should let him do it. A race with his dad? Heck yes!! I'm all for experiences. You never know how much time you have left with someone special so if there's an opportunity like this, he should take it. Memories like those are what we keep the rest of our lives.
Besides, if the baby has issues on the plane, that for him to deal with. They'll both survive the ordeal.13
