I'm thinking about running the race on my own - same day/time/course. Would you be interested?1 -
@TheMrWobbly Congratulations on your PB! It is your PB. Try to not compare it to anyone else's. You are doing great!
I was going to do my weekend run today, but I have 2 events - one was this morning and the other is form 6 - 10 tonight. Also, the church service I normally go to is cancelled for tomorrow, as is my visit to the nursing home, and my neighbor that I visit on Sunday's is out of town. So, I'll be home all morning and will get my run in then. This afternoon, I went for a 2 mile walk in a cool sprinkle of rain. I stayed fairly close to home in case it started pouring. I didn't mind getting damp, but didn't want to get soaked.

No run last night due to unexpectedly winding up in the most unexpected of places: the emergency room. Daughter was attacked by a Pitbull. Long story but she's fine, just sore and torn up on her thigh. I feel pity for the dog, always the owner's fault... My heart always wonders if the animal is mistreated or such, especially that particular type of dog. But also, I have a crazy dog and she's never been mistreated. I don't know...I just don't. Sometimes you just have to pray and leave it all in God's hands or you'll lose your mind.
I'm just STUCK right now.18 -
@LoveyChar I hope your daughter is ok. Makes me so mad that pitbulls get such a bad rep. My son has a pit, and she is the sweetest, most loving dog I have ever been around. Hugs to you and your daughter ❤️3

I usually do my long run on Sunday and take Saturday as a rest day, but I switched days this week. There was a slight chance of some rain today and it has been cloudy and drizzly all day. But there is a greater chance of thunderstorms tomorrow and while I will run in rain, I won't run in thunder/lightning. It probably won't be stormy tomorrow since I ran today, but I am still glad I made the switch. I had a really good 9 mile run. I was supposed to run 8, but I got a little carried away because I was having such a good run and I didn't head back when I should have. I tried to run this one by feel and ended up with an average pace of 10:53 which is where a long run should be for me. My pace wasn't as steady as last time though when I was using the virtual pacer on my garmin. @quilteryoyo That is how I can keep my pace steady. All in all it was a good run and I am just going to try to enjoy the rest if my weekend.
Hugs to everyone who has had their race cancelled. I had one cancelled for weather last year and it sucked. I suppose it could be cancelled again this year, but hopefully by mid May things will be better. I am trying not to be too anxious about the coronavirus, but all the hype in the media and the crazy people at the grocery store don't make it easy. I live in a town of about 5000 people and our stores are out of toilet paper. And the closest I know of any cases is in Ft. Worth which is about 95 miles from here. Plus my son who has been in Japan for a year is scheduled to come home on the 24th and I am worried that his travel plans may be affected. But so far he hasn't heard anything about that so he is still planning to come home. We were planning a family get together for the 27th, but now I am thinking it might be best to wait until he's been home a couple of weeks before getting together with my parents and MIL since they are in the demographic that could have complications. The best part of my run today was that I didn't worry about any if this while I was running.
@loveychar I'm sorry to hear about your daughter. Bad owners definitely give dogs a bad name.

It is ALWAYS the owner's fault. There are no bad dogs. NONE. Just horrid horrid owners.
I don't know if I'm with you entirely on that one... not to take the subject and run with it.
I have a reactive/aggressive dog. He does not have a drop of pit bull in him. He's actually a lab/border collie/cattle dog mix. But he's got his triggers that make him snap (he's awful on a leash) and we manage him. He's sweet as pie, just turns into a different dog and tries to attack other dogs and occasionally men while he's leashed.
He's been to a few different trainers and he just does not respond to it. Its like there's a switch in his brain that just shuts his focus off entirely. I actually have an appointment set up with our vet to try and see about getting him medicated.
Sometimes the "wiring" in a dog's brain is off, but then its up to the owners to understand their dogs and be responsible and manage it. We've had a few close calls with him, mainly people that don't listen when I tell them he's not friendly and try to pet him anyway. "I'm good with dogs." Not this one, you're not. I've had him for 7 years and not once has he bitten anyone because I'm SOOOO cautious with him on walks/runs.
But still, perfect storms and accidents happen in these circumstances on occasion. I don't think it necessarily means the dog is bad, but that doesn't mean the owner wasn't doing everything in their power to prevent it, either.7 -
@LoveyChar I’m glad to hear your daughter isn’t badly hurt.
My mom’s neighbor speaks through a voice box because her throat was damaged by a pit bull attack. I know there are wonderful pits, but when they do go bad, they are very dangerous because they are such a powerful dog. And for some reason they seem to attract irresponsible people.
Last year I posted about dog sitting for my elderly friend who takes in equally elderly rescue dogs - last month she and Anna, the doggie that used to be a puppy mill momma, were attacked in her own front yard by a neighbor’s pit. It went out the window of their house through their screen to try to kill Anna. My friend is nearly 90 and recovering from cancer treatment but she instantly threw herself over Anna and did everything she could to save her life, and fight off this dog, thus she ended up being bitten pretty severely. This was the second time the dog had attacked one of her dogs (the first one lost sight in one eye and hearing and eventually had to be put down), after the first time they promised they wouldn’t let it outside without supervision. Well, it made its own way outside by busting out the window screen. Because she believes there’s no such thing as a bad dog she had not reported the first attack to the police, and she wasn’t planning to report this one either, but the hospital insisted on a police report and the pit bill was put down.
My husband and I have been chased in my neighborhood by a pack of pits escaped from a drug house. We had to run to a random stranger’s house for shelter and get a police escort to get home.
I wish there was some way of preventing all but qualified people from owning pit bulls without unduly penalizing the dogs, which can be kind and beautiful dogs. But I don’t personally know a case of any other breed of dog that has put someone in the hospital, and I’m not even listing all the cases that happened in my own city - a guy here a few years ago died after he was attacked at a bus stop and the dog ripped his arm literally off while bystanders beat the dog with a crowbar. That’s crazy. It’s not something that should happen in a civilized society.5 -
Thank you to all with well wishes...@Scott6255 @RunsOnEspresso @TheMrWobbly @kgirlhart @Tramboman @rheddmobile
@PastorVincent You are 100% correct. As I mentioned, I have a crazy dog. She loves us, her family and pack but she does not get along well with other dogs or people. She has never been abused, neglected, or mistreated in any way. I believe she acts the way she does because she has never been socialized with other people or animals. Should she ever attack, I am 100% responsible. I am 100% responsible for keeping her away from others because I know she could potentially bite (too small to do any damage, but nonetheless it's a bite and it's 100% negligence on my part should it happen. You are 100% accurate in what you said, 100%. Period, end of debate because there isn't one. My daughter was attacked. It was because of the negligence of the owners and it's not the dog's fault. My heart goes out to the dog, as he is an animal and maybe he felt fear, anxiety...and he did not know how to handle it or what he was doing as most animals lack logical reasoning.

Afternoon all.
Well the virus is becoming very real in NZ. We have effectively closed our borders, we now have 7 confirmed cases and a cruise ship in Dock with 3 people being tested, all of whom came in contact with someone in the last 14 days.
Why people? Where is the common sense?
As for me, I believe my brain is switching into training mode. Today's plan is a rest day, so naturally I got up and attempted a 5k run. I kinda quit at 2k cause I just wasn't feeling it. Mentally I kinda want to continue my run streak but I KNOW I need to take rest days to heal properly, especially as my KMs are going to ramp up quick.
So that's it for run streak! It will be over on Tuesday. I've enjoyed doing it, but on to new things.
I'm contemplating swimming on rest days. That still counts as rest right?

Thanks @shanaber
Potatoes ? Geez did they have them?
So over the summer Skip and I went to a new place to run. Well it was better suited to hike so we did that. There was a place that a great waterfall would be had we had rain at all. Well it’s been raining pretty much non stop for months so we went back today WTH dry. Seems there a little stream that actually fills the area we saw with water but it starts below what we thought would be a waterfall. Sad for the lack of waterfall but a fun hike in the mud lol4 -
Good to see you @skippygirlsmom!
Sorry about your daughter's attack @LoveyChar
Congrats on your 90-day run streak @Avidkeo! Well done. Today was day 88 for me and I'm thinking of calling it quits as well. I totally get you on the mental battle of wanting to keep it going. I'm sure once I stop it will be fine, maybe a little bit freeing.

I did not do my long run this morning. I just didn't. I got talked into meeting a friend at the gym at 8:45 for a workout and that meant I'd have to start the long run really early to get it done before that. And I was just dragging after a tough week so I decided not to set my alarm and texted another friend to see if she wanted to run later in the day. Turns out she had to cancel after all, and I really needed to take my poor dog for a long walk so after my workout I did that instead. Then I really needed to get some work done so I put off the run some more. Finally at almost 5:00 I forced myself to go out and get 3 miles done, regretting the whole time that I hadn't just run this morning. But sleeping in was very lovely and much needed.
I'm going to attempt a long run tomorrow. I'm also not really feeling it these days, but I do always feel better after getting a run done. I just don't want to be wiped out for the rest of the day because I have so much to do. It's a tough balance right now.4 -
@LoveyChar So sorry about your daughter. Glad she wasn't hurt worse and hope she heals quickly.
@kgirlhart Glad you had a great run. I have a Garmin. Wonder if it has a virtual pacer? I'll have to research that.
@rheddmobile You're pit bull stories are scary. Glad you and your DH were able to outrun the rack of pits.
Stay well @Avidkeo and everyone else. Hopefully we'll get the CoVID-19 virus under control soon and things will get back to normal.
@skippygirlsmom Sorry you didn't get to see a waterfall, but glad you had a nice hike anyway.3 -
with all the panic i figured to drop some educational facts. be smart. osmosis is awesome, check it out. https://youtu.be/eup3_i_5uaw4

@katharmonic & @quilteryoyo Thank you ❤️...
@bearly63 I hope your daughter's graduation doesn't get cancelled. You work 4-5 years towards that goal for the best walk ever and then it gets cancelled and/or postponed...I know she has to be anxious, as are you...
My daughters get an "extended spring break." All school sports are cancelled for the remainder of the season. My race is cancelled, can't even pull up race on website to see if or when it will be postponed to (assuming it is). It's Bush's Chicken, Carlson Law Firm and the City of Temple sponsoring it so with three reputable places (I think), I would imagine it is going to be rescheduled but I'm not certain. I'm one in millions of disappointed runners all over the world. But...HOPE is still alive and well.2 -

Hey everybody. I got woken up at 5am by my allergies and thought why not a run.
The peach blossoms are almost fully in bloom and half the runners I saw by the lake are now mask-less. We've had only foreign incoming new cases in Beijing for eight days. I'm going back to work next Tuesday.
I know everybody is freaked out where y'all are, and I know that the first few weeks are the worst with all the fear and uncertainty. Numbers and rumors are all going to be scary, but remember that it's a virus, not voodoo, and with common sense, keeping away from crowds, and plenty of soap, we'll get to the other side of this.
@MegaMooseEsq Really feeling for you here. Here's my cat trying to help me work from home.
@LoveyChar Sorry to hear that, hope your daughter gets better quickly.
@Elise4270 Thanks for the video. I wonder why the attitude toward face masks in so different East vs. West... interesting.12 -
So I ran the Maraetai Half this morning - the fourth in my series of five (the last one is in three week's time!).
It was a perfect day here - early autumn, so cool and clear and deathly still. Absolutely stunning day and, as the race was in rural Auckland by a fairly isolated beach, beautifully scenic.
The course was basically an out and back - fairly flat and fast, however, the turnaround was actually a loop over a very steep hill with a gravel track. That hill was the undoing of many - myself included.
I started well, watching my watch carefully to make sure I wasn't going out too fast. My coach had advised 5:15-5:30 pace for the way out, however, for the first time since about November, I was feeling totally pain free (damned achilles finally coming right), and super energised, so my pace for the first 10k was 5:15ish or a smidge faster.
Then I hit the hill. It was waaaay steeper than I expected. About 800m up, a brief reprieve and then up, even steeper for another 400m. I did ok on the first climb but misjuded it, thinking it was the whole climb. The second bit killed my legs and I was forced to walk for 100m or so. Then came the downhill, which was even steeper and on loose gravel which made for another slow kilometre.
Then it was the final 8k home back on the road. Here, I was supposed to run 5:05 to 5:15 pace and I almost did - mostly around 5:15, some faster, some slower - and I had to push to maintain this pace. However, there was a small climb at kilometre 20 which I really struggled on (confession: I walked for about 10m).
But I survived it and finished in a respectable 1:54:33, beating my friend by exactly one second (!).
I have great hopes for the final half - this one is dead flat the whole way and I'm hoping for a new PB. Fingers crossed the weather and how I feel are the same as today!

@noblsheep Thank you... And I love your positive attitude and black cat, so pretty...1

@quilteryoyo I have the Forerunner 35 which is a pretty basic model so you probably do have the virtual pacer.1

Thanks @LoveyChar I hope your daughter heals fast.1

@LoveyChar - I am so sorry for your daughter. I am sure she was terrified and I hope she isn't afraid of dogs now.
re: aggressive dogs. Hobbes the Vizsla, my Mr. Social, pretty much loves everyone, except when he doesn't. I am wary of anyone he reacts to when we are out (very rare) and we take a wide berth of unknown dogs that he reacts to and those that the owners have little control of. He is afraid of small dogs and pretty much wants to play with all the rest. The only dog he has really been attacked by was unfortunately a pit bull. She was young and they both wanted to play and then she turned and went after him. We were able to get them apart before any real damage was done other than frightening him. I think some dogs, maybe many, are leash aggressive maybe resource guarding their people. IDK maybe @mbaker566 would have some insight as she deals with so many rescues.
Also @LoveyChar, I was bitten by a Jack Russell terrier. Yes their bite is not big but small dogs can definitely do damage. They tend to bite and hang on to try and shake their prey which in this case was my calf muscle.
@noblsheep - thanks for the calm, wise words! People just need to take a deep breath and realize it isn't the zombie apocalypse but it is definitely more than 'just the flu' and take smart precautions. Love your cat helping you work too!
@MegaMooseEsq - I hope the new therapy helps and you get back to enjoying life again! Your kitties are beautiful too.
@ContraryMaryMary - sounds like a fantastic race, even with that hill! Congratulations!!
@Elise4270 - Thanks for posting the video. I found it very interesting and informative!
@skippygirlsmom - They had the potatoes but were apparently completely out of so many things and people had carts full! No pasta, no soup, no TP or bottled water and my husband said the worst thing though was they were almost completely out of...Ice Cream!😂 He had to buy vanilla cause all the other flavors were gone. Note we needed nothing other than potatoes and he was just wandering, amazed at how empty everything was and decided ice cream was an important thing to have, just in case.6 -
@LoveyChar hope your daughter heals quickly and doesn't have any long term effects.
@ConraryMaryMary Congratulations! It's great to see someone on here racing
After watching Spain make staying inside mandatory, I decided I should try to get out every day at least for a short run, as long as I'm allowed to. I stayed away from main roads and did see quite a few people out walking their dogs or in the forest. Hole-digging guy was still there, now standing in the hole... I'm guessing he's looking for something. So weird. I probably should try to contain my curiosity and not take that path tomorrow.
March goal 100 miles (stretch goal 200 km)
Pictures from the same spot in the forest, 24 hours apart. It's a beautiful day!12 -
Great to hear from you @noblsheep !@Elise4270 Thanks for the video. I wonder why the attitude toward face masks in so different East vs. West... interesting.
I do not know about China, at all. I am sure what I do know from movies is wrong I do not know, but I suspect it is because here in USA masks are associated with bad actors and have been for generations. If you are covering your face you are automatically untrustworthy. For many, it is completely unconscious, but it is prevalent throughout the culture.
