2 runs.
saturday i ran after teaching class. i was tired before i started. i wasn't thrilled but i made sure to bring running stuff to the studio with me to avoid going home, sitting down and not running.
a mile into it, i thought i should turn around but kept going. tried to focus on positive thoughts. the birds, the weird snow shapes, the quietness. it felt like uphill both ways. it felt ok, then it hurt, then ok, then a mental wall with the discomfort. i was so grateful for the mile markers on the way back. i practically cried at the 1 mile marker being so close to the car. i wanted to hug and kiss my car when i got back. it was mostly because i was tired from class. i accidentally ran my fastest half.
and sunday i had a race. i had a race that gave away TP as part of the swag. it was supposed to be 4.5 but they changed it to 3.5mi. it's ok. we are used to it with the RD. we=me and speed demon. she was very excited to go. i was less. the race is called the hills are alive. it was back at the zipline company on the mtb trail. up and down, back and forth. i didn't start too fast this time. but the first stretch is straight up a big long hill. it was sorta a figure 8. muddy, lots of roots and loose debris. speed demon was so ready to go faster. but after saturday, i had not a whole lot in the tank. it was nice. there was corned beef and other snacks. always a cooler of beer and water and soda.
yes she did that to my car door
she looks so happy13 -
sorry, i have over 100+ posts, probably won't catch up.
sorry @loveychar about your daughter
sorry about all the races that were cancelled.
@shanaber hobbes is looking good2 -
@MegaMooseEsq Do naps count as a cross-training activity?
I've made that note to myself several times, but I must write it in Sanskrit or some other language I cannot read.

Since there is rain and thunderstorms in the forecast this week I decided to go ahead and run this morning since there were no storms and it wasn't really raining. It was foggy and 100% humidity, but only 53Β°F, so not too bad. It was a nice 5 mile run and I really enjoyed it. When I got home I did some yoga and that was really good too, so I was feeling real good, but then when I got ready to head to work my car wouldn't start so I ended up spending an unexpected $180 on a new battery so that kind of sucked. But my car works now so I guess that's ok. I talked to my son on Saturday and his travel plans are still on so hopefully he will be back home next week. No word on whether my HM will be cancelled or not. It is over 8 weeks away so who knows. I'm planning to continue training as if it is on and then if it is cancelled I will probably just run the distance anyway.

5/16/20: Run for 57th AHC Half Marathon6 -
My right shin and knee are a little twingy today so I'm going to skip my run, but my gym posted today's workout on Facebook so I'm going to head down to the basement as soon as I finish my lunch and work out in a responsible, socially distant way. Elbow bump! I'd initially planned to go in since there's usually only a half-dozen people at the gym at any given time, but I'm seeing my mom on Wednesday and she's A Vulnerable Population so I'm being conservative.7

Thanks for all your lovely comments everyone. That race was a good way to end the season because, as it turns out, the season here is done. My final series race has been postponed till somewhere in August or September (hopefully), I don't imagine the Great Ocean Race in Melbourne will go ahead in May (fingers and toes crossed), and any gathering over 500 has been cancelled here in NZ wiping out almost all other running events.
We've also decided not to go to Fiji this week - I just can't handle the idea of my husband and me being in one country and our children in another with 3000km of ocean in between - even though there are no re-entry restrictions (no coronavirus in most of the Pacific Islands yet). Bummer is, Air NZ is giving refunds or free transfers on booked flights from countries that require 14 days self-isolation on arrival - which are all countries except the Pacific Islands!
It's not helping either that the autumn weather has arrived - cold and grey and super windy today. Only one thing for it: I'm off out for a run!12 -
@mbaker566 You did a LOT of running over the weekend. That race sounds very difficult and looks like I would get lost trying to follow the trail. Love the pictures. Did everyone who ran have a dog? It sure looks like it in the picture.0

As suspected, it was announced that we are to begin working remotely from now until at least March 30, and we will not resume any in-person classes the rest of the semester. I spent the day trying to get some things finished and prepare to not be in my office. And then it was announced that all gyms, restaurants and bars are to close tonight until further notice. I know several states made that call today. It's quite the dose of reality.
I had planned to go to running group tonight, which at this point is still going on, although with limited size groups and keeping distance from each other. But I couldn't get out of work earlier enough, so I ended up getting just a quick run in when I got home, just before it got dark. That's 90 days of running completed.
I felt this immediate sense of isolation in getting home tonight. Normally I love evenings at home, but it feels so different. I'm thankful for running to get me out of the house and seeing some people (at appropriate social distances )

My marathon is officially not happening. Now, I aimlessly stop training and start stress-eating everything in the house for lack of anything better to do. Awesome.12

Decided to take a "Rest and repair day" on Saturday instead of scheduled run as my right ankle was hurting too much on Friday just walking around the apartment. Had planned to go to the Y today & start strength training again, but I had to get a recall done on my car, then the crazy 4 grocery stores & 3 counties to find a few things we were out of (most on my list I wasn't able to get - and no, I'm not buying into the mass-hysteria horde buying mentality) only to get home & see the notice that the Y is now closed through April.....and I now join those of you whose races have been cancelled. My April 25th 5K has been cancelled, no reschedule date. I still plan to train as though it is, and do one of those "virtual" races on the 25th, one that makes a donation to the ASPCA.
I did watch the local press conference about all the closures and such, and for some reason, it hit me tonight that since I have this whole asthma thing going on now, I guess I am now considered in the "high risk category"? Doen't change how I plan to go about things, I believe in living my life, still taking the standard precautions I have been taking all along. And taking a run in the morning!
As of now, still the same:
March goal: get back to running 2-3 days per week. 5K April 25th.
3/3 - Ran 1.76 miles (total run: 1.76 miles)
3/4 - Walk 3.3 miles (total walk: 3.3 miles)

A lot of us are feeling a bit lost with the cancellation of various events, and many have have a corresponding drop in motivation, which is perfectly natural. My coach has just sent out an email which Iβm sharing below which may help you find new focus until normal programming resumes - particularly paragraph two.
There is a significant amount of uncertainty around the next period of time, and it will certainly test the reasons why we run.
My suggestion is that this next period of time will give you/us a fantastic opportunity to develop technique, capacity, speed, economy.
In the interim I suggest that we focus on being as HEALTHY as possible. Including but limited to:
- Lots of good food incl. lots of vegetables.
- Lots of sleep.
- Lots of sunlight exposure incl. but not limited to vitamin D.
- Plenty of fresh air.
- Supplementing a healthy diet with vitamin C, fish oil, probiotics, apple cider vinegar and various fermented foods.
- Lots of exercise. Preferably outside in nature.
- Reduce stress and sympathetic dominance, and allow parasympathetic resting and digesting.
- A practice of gratitude, or a daily routine or similar that allows you to create space for an amazing day/week/life.15 -
@mbaker566 - love the picture of you on your car! I know I have felt that way a few times! The race pictures are fantastic. I bet you both had a great time and the TP for swag is awesome.
My gym is closed for the foreseeable future so I will be doing strength training at home, maybe looking at some yoga videos too. I don't want to lose the muscle and strength I have developed - it took too long and too much work to get here.
@ContraryMaryMary - love your coaches words!
Unusual run for me at 4 in a row without a rest day and today's run was by far the best. I was worried about a repeat of Saturday's cold and we rain run but we managed to out run the rain this time. Coming back I had a sharp pain in my groin muscle that made me stop suddenly and 'yelp' in pain. This freaked Hobbes out and he was all over me making sure I was ok. The rest of the way home he stayed right at my side looking up every so often to make sure I was ok. I was able to run most of the rest of the way home with the pain pretty much alleviated until we got close to home when it happened again. At that point I just finished up walking the rest of the way. Fortunately a strength training day tomorrow and a rest day on Wednesday. Unless the weather is really nice in which case I may try for a run on Wednesday as the rest of the week and weekend are expected to have heavy rain. No agility class tonight for Hobbes the Vizsla due to the rain. It amazes me that he knows it is the day for class and is ready to go. Was not happy when I didn't get ready and let me know it.
I will be up early in the morning. A local store is allowing seniors to shop an hour before the store opens. I am taking my husband with me as I don't quite qualify but he does. We need to get things for our housebound 86 yo neighbor and all the other stores are bare.

I feel like we need something like a virtual race for everyone on the thread who feels goal-less right now because of cancelled races. Any ideas for a goal we could share, suitable for people of different training levels, at different distances, which would help raise spirits?11

I found a virtual race for HM/marathon cancellations... it has a wooden medal that reads 'I ran it anyway'. Probably not supposed to post the link here but I can message it to anyone interested. It's a UK company but was affordable, I think I paid 18β¬ including shipping.7 -

there were 2 runs. the dogs started first and the humans only started 2nd. which i think is silly. because most of the dog people are slower than the humans doing the race.
brian did a great job marking the trail. better than last time. last time i took a wrong turn.
i did see a window decal that said 200(ish) which made me laugh2 -
Beautiful sunny day and I got out for 11.5k. I was happy to be allowed to run outside. If I can still leave the house on Friday, I'll go run my HM in solidarity with @eleanorhawkins but I'm waiting until after I do it to order the medal. I do not have a treadmill at home, but have confirmed that the balcony is big enough for me to jump rope on. Just in case.

For those of us such as myself that are in the young and healthy category, there is no decent excuse I should be slacking so much. I can make excuses all day and that's exactly what it is - me making excuses.
My kids are out of school, and as of tomorrow, my husband will be working from home. Someone made a comment that wouldn't it be a brilliant idea if elders and immune compromised quarantined themselves so children and everyone else would not be affected and life would not be haulted for them. Just a thought. My daughter wants to travel and I'm fine with it but she'd be travelling to my elderly father who works two retail jobs around so many people. My dad is a crazy person, should be fearful but doesn't worry even when he should. I hope I live a full life now so I'm not grappling for scraps down the road when it bears toward the end. But who knows what I'll be like then...
I'm going for runs every day this week. Daughter is helpful with baby and hubby will be home tomorrow. I need to learn how to bake bread. We needed a loaf yesterday and not one single loaf on the rack of any variety. Adapt and learn.
Have a great day, everyone! I'm off.4 -
My May 20-miler was cancelled yesterday! I was absolutely gutted, as this was a trail run that I was looking forward to and had a real chance to dramatically improve last year's time. Oh well. I had an hour of dwelling in self-pity and then I let it go. Hugs to everyone that is struggling with cancelled races. You absolutely aren't alone and it's so nice to have a place where people will get it and understand that unique feeling of disappointment and frustration.
(Also, I understand that race organizers sometimes don't have the option to refund money because there are costs associated with putting on the race that they can't necessarily get back, but can I complain for a minute about how EXPENSIVE all this has been -- spring is a busy race season for me usually and all these races are just vanishing with no refunds, no rescheduling, and -- if anything -- a minimal credit -- for a future race).
I'm doing my best to not let this derail me. I went from having a spring of races I was looking forward to and suddenly my next race is the June marathon (and who knows what will ultimately happen with that).
My city is now in a state of emergency. My mom was supposed to drive up to visit me this weekend, but I told her yesterday not to come. It sucks, we're both disappointed. But I couldn't forgive myself if something happened to her due to her visit. I know it was the right thing to do.
ANYWAY, it's a good time to run! From everything I've read, running outside is still considered very safe . . . as long as we're staying out of the personal zone of other runners. I noticed everyone I saw this morning seemed extra careful to stay out of my space (and I was equally careful to stay out of theirs). Happy running everyone! I'm trying to think about embracing this as a time to focus on consistent training without necessarily having a fun race in the next few weeks to motivate me. It's good for me, right? And anything that reduces stress is a good thing right now.

Another humid 5 miles this morning. It wasn't a bad run, but it felt tougher than it should have. The humidity was quite oppressive this morning. I was glad that there weren't any thunderstorms though. The chances that we had for this morning have moved into later today. There are more chances for thunderstorms and flash flooding tomorrow morning and Thursday morning so I still haven't decided which day will be my running rest day. If it is good in the morning I will run and then rest on Thursday, but I was conservative enough with my goal that if I have to miss a run altogether I think I'll still be able to hit the goal. I am glad I am still able to run. Our city/county have declared a state of emergency. We have no confirmed cases (there are no test here yet) but the doctors all feel confident that there are infected people here so we are all practicing social distancing. I am not working from home, but I am in a small office with only one and sometimes 2 people there. Most of the time I am the only one in the office and we don't get any foot traffic so that helps. My husband works at the church so he comes into contact with more people but they have cancelled all activities and services for now. Except for the 3rd Tuesday of the month there is a mobile food pantry and they are still distributing food today. But I know he will be diligent about hand washing/sanitizing and he is not in a risk group either. But I know that we have to think of those we come into contact with, not just whether we ourselves are at risk. I'm trying not to be anxious about all this, but my parents are definitely in the high risk group as is my mother in law. My daughter who lives in Austin has asthma. She is working from home, but they suspect that someone in their office has it but they were not tested. And my son is supposed to be moving home from Japan next week. It is hard not to be stressed. Running and yoga do help though. I supposed if we were to go on lockdown and not be able to leave the house I would have to start doing "crazy laps" like @AlphaHowls. But for now I will just be grateful that I can still go outside and run and since I always run by myself anyway it isn't a big change and it is nice to be able to keep some routine amidst all the stress.

@rheddmobile I have periodically done some of the virtual runs on "Virtual Pace Series" if I like the medal and, most importantly, the charity it supports. There have been several others that I have seen on-line, and some of the races I've seen have offered a virtual option. (The Hot Chocolate 15K is an example) For me, I can run here at home. No biggie. It was the event part of it, the marking the date, prepping the backpack the night before, mentally figuring out how long of a drive, parking, and the comeraderie of the other runners before crossing those lines. THAT was what made it a goal for me. Doing a virtual one...eh. I usually would do them along with the event one.
Saying that, last night I did order an ASPCA virtual run to use in place of the YMCA 5K that was cancelled. Guess for now, that will have to suffice.4 -

I decided to go into the state park, take in some nature. There was no one about at all. Hardly any cars, and I live across the street from a high school. Just as I was getting ready to get into the shower to go to work, my supervisor emailed me to let me know not to come in. Campus on lockdown until at least April 6th, but at least I can get paid while we are off.
I had decided to actually do a HM this year. The one I picked was a cool one, the "Gopher to Badger", starting in Minnesota, ending in Wisconsin (my father was from MN, I'm a Cheesehead!) The race is scheduled for August 8th, training to start around May 18th. With everything shutting & closing down, and now time limits seem to be stretching longer....is it even worth starting? Even worth challenging myself to the HM?8 -
I have signed up for the virtual 15K Hot Chocolate as well as one of the virtual pace ones @dreamer12151 mentioned. The Top Gun one 'cause that medal! And one of my fave movies of all time. So I really had no choice but to run it.
I do like your idea though @rheddmobile We should all pick a date and run whatever distance we are ready for that day, and post our results!
4.7 Treadmill miles because it called for heavy rain all morning and I didn't want to chance it. Of course it didn't rain but a few sprinkles which would have been fine.

I refuse to give up my joy and hope for this life.
I have tuned in regularly to the governors' addresses in the areas that I have people and travel arrangements that I am concerned about.
I have also tuned in every day to hear from Trump (take from that what you will - it's just that he's the one making the decisions so who else am I going to listen to?)
There is this song, "The Blessing," that has been carrying me - it's an anthem of hope and love and peace. For anyone interested - - - -

Rest day today - I will run tomorrow - or Thursday... so far I still get to go to work, which is nice, because so many people don't.
@quilteryoyo - yes, I went to the doctor a few weeks ago but he said if it doesn't get better I'll need PT. That's all. You are probably right - I am mostly cutting back long runs and trying to do what I CAN do. I am not in too much pain today, which is a good sign. Kinda makes me think if I'd just lay off the running I'd get better a lot quicker, rotfl
@LoveyChar I have my trip this weekend to see my brother in Portland. he and I have been discussing what is wisdom, what is responsible... should we postpone the visit...... *sigh* nothing in this life is permanent. This virus is temporary..... Also!!! Try "Amish Sweet White Bread," it's the best!3 -
@kgirlhart I feel your stress. I am in Austin and they just closed all bars and restaurants except for take out. Working from home which is funny because I work from home at my bosses home office but he didn't want me coming and going. Not sure why I feel offended but whatever.
My main stress is my son in NYC. He was still having to go to work at the client site (a huge hotel renovation) and taking the subway(unless they shut it down) He is feeling a bit isolated and I fully expect that he will get it and most likely be fine since he is 24 but I hate that I'm so far away. I don't think he bought much food.
Sorry for all of the cancelled races. Spring is such a great time to be outside here....and I am an extrovert so I am already stir crazy. I need to get a bike! If I do a virtual race it will literally be virtual....no running.
Cheers and Happy St. Patrick's day ππππ7 -

Even worth challenging myself to the HM?
For what itβs worth, I found a huge jump in fitness while training for a half. The half itself I was woefully underprepared for (I jumped into my half with only a month to spare due to loving the location) and ended up with a very sore hip for a couple of months, but the longer runs - 8 to 10 mile long runs - were great for me and vastly improved my pace at shorter distances.6
