Target will be open an hour earlier for the elderly and those with health conditions. How do they know who falls under the health conditions? I look like a healthy, youngish person but I'm high risk with my asthma. And even though they believe non-active celiac doesn't make you immunocompromised they warned that celiac does make people more susceptible to pneumonia (been there, done that, don't want it again) and vaccines (flu, shingles) may not work as well. GREAT.
My understanding is that nobody is going to be asked to "prove" their vulnerable status. They're simply asking non-vulnerable guests to plan their shopping around this planned time for other guests. Note: I work for Target, but have nothing to do with the stores or this policy. This is just based on the public information I've read about the policy.
I most likely wouldn't go as I have a low-risk person at home that can run errands but you never know. The email Target sent out didn't say how it would work (and we all know people will take advantage of this that aren't affected)1 -

Yes, unfortunately you can always count on jerks and people trying to take advantage.0 -
@kgirlhart That birthday girl has the best eyes! What a beautiful pup!
My gym is still open but its smallish and at a family neighborhood club. They are limiting it to 10 people at a time. I took a chance and went early this morning and had the cardio room all to myself. Wiped everything down before and after. I don’t have a bike here until Saturday so I took a chance. It was good to get some exercise.
Hang in there everyone!

For everyone whose races were canceled and were wondering what to do to keep the level of fitness or race readiness, I saw this article from Runners World:

Thanks! Glad you were able to get to the gym.0 -
@mbaker566 Your puppy is adorable.
@hamsterwheel6 Great run and great pace!
@kgirlhart Glad you got out for your run. Happy Birthday to your beautiful girl! Hope the storms stay away today and you both can get a good nights sleep.

Short but sweet 3k near home. Trying to back off before running 21.1 on Friday, but really needed to go for a run. Saw an acquaintance from church walking her dog and didn't even stop, just said hi and kept running. Then I wondered if that was rude of me, or if that's what we're supposed to do now. There was a line outside the pharmacy, looks like one person goes in at a time and everyone else waits outside (standing 1 meter apart of course). Strange times...
March goal 100 miles (stretch goal 200 km)
Upcoming races:
March 20 - Running my own HM to replace postponed race9 -
@RunsOnEspresso - I saw that same email and had the same thought as you. I hate to think poorly of people but you just know someone is going to use it as a way to get in early.
@mbaker566 - so happy the little pup is going to his fur-ever home! I am sure they will be happy to have him especially now.
@bearly63 - so great to get a workout in at an empty gym! All of the gyms here closed earlier this week so I am making the most of what I have at home in between running days.
@kgirlhart - Happy Birthday to your beautiful girlie! Have you ever tried a thunder shirt (or just a tightly wrapped shirt) on her? I was very dubious but tried it with Hobbes and he is SO much better with it. They also use at our doggy daycare place for pups that get anxious and it makes a world of difference for them.
Rest day for me today. I was going to try to run a little but my sore groin muscle is still sore so I thought it best to rest it and try running tomorrow. I may get Hobbes out for a walk though just to get some of the crazies out (his and mine 🥴).6 -
A lot more people walking dogs during my run through the back roads today. I think people are getting stir crazy4

My actual race was cancelled but I went and did the virtual option anyway (as did many others). I did opt to drop to the 5 mile distance (since not a real race). I also want to mention that when I left there were a couple of cases in NY. When I came home, CT is in lockdown, everything closed, no gatherings of more than 50 - mass hysteria and doom everywhere. It was 3 1/2 days.
Anyway-my “race” report. Because I still had fun and it’s gorgeous.
The Canyonlands half marathon (and 5 mile) was covid-cancelled. The race company offered a virtual option or you could get 65% of your race fee as a credit for another race in the next year.
Since I would not have been able to rebook travel to coincide with a race that would fit my schedule, I opted to continue with my trip to Moab and run the virtual race while I was here.
Since I have no business running any race at all right now (recovery is still painfully slow), a virtual run is a much better option. It gave me a chance to do a leisurely, photo-op “run” along a paved path that is adjacent to the race route road (rt 128).
The magical thing about this road, and the reason this race is so special, is that rt 128 is a narrow, winding road carved right next to towering canyon walls on one side, and the Colorado River on the other. You are “in” nature. You can run your hands along the red rock walls as you run down the road. Much of the paved bike path (where I ran) is over the banks of the river because there’s just no more land (aside from the 2 narrow road lanes between the rock wall and the river).
It is stunning, it is awe inspiring, it is a landscape that is unmatched elsewhere. It’s also why rt 128 is the second most scenic road in the US (pacific coast highway is #1).
The arches half marathon (run on the other half of rt 128) remains the most beautiful place I have ever run.
Anyway-I decided to run a 5 mile virtual “race”. Note: I ran 7.5 last Saturday and it was just as awful as every other run for the last few months. My legs are still shot. Although more like December shot vs late January shot-so some improvement. But not “let’s go bang out a half PR” kind of improvement.
So I drove to the place that would have been the finish line for the race. The paved path runs 2.5 miles up 128 from there. So my virtual race route was to run out and back.
Start my gadgets. Start moving. Drop gum. Drop water bottle. Drop battery. Drop phone. FFS.
Everything back and packed in. Now we’re cruising. .12 miles. Now I need to pee. Sigh. Pee. Timer still going. I’m going to blame my race time on scrubbing my hands for 20 seconds.
Get going again. Stop for pics 1-18. Run 100 yards. Stop for pics. Am I hot? Do I need to take off my jacket? Run 100 yards. More pics. More jacket debate.
First mile finished in a Kenyan-like 17:14.
The remaining miles were much the same. Although there was disrobing and re-robing along with the photos.
I took a zillion photos but it’s just not possible to really capture the enormity of these rock formations. And the feeling of being “in” them. It’s the reason I wanted to run this race. It’s something I’ve never experienced elsewhere.
Anyway-ran out. Stopped for some water. Managed to inadvertently hurl my water bottle at a biker when I was trying to put it back in my belt. Turned around and ran back. More pics. More jacket on/off. The sun was starting to go down - which makes the colors of the rocks so vibrant. More pics. More awe at the landscape. Several passes back and forth across the footbridge to capture more photos.
After spending 22 minutes (race timer still going) taking more pics, someone‘s cookout makes me very hungry so I decide my virtual race is done.
5.43 miles in 1:32. Average pace 17:06. LOLOL. I wonder if I placed in my AG?
22 min of that is the last .43 miles. That’s darn near Olympian pace! Well-considering the approx 347 pictures I stopped to take...
I know I podiumed for “most bomb-*kitten* photo run” and for getting damn close to the real thing when my race is covid-canceled.
If you want to see some pics-I’m duck_puddle on Instagram and there are pics there (also my dog).

And I know it’s not a real race but hardly anyone is running any real races so I’m doing my best to stay in the spirit (for me). And keeping my fingers crossed for my next possible-on 5/16 (5 days after the current “no gatherings more than 50 people) ban expires).5

I went for a run on campus today and it was so strange seeing it so very empty. I looped around and did a couple of famously long sets of stairs. I don't run on campus very frequently (because it's hilly) so it was a good change of pace. I got a little sad about some of the hills actually, because they are part of the Mountain Goat Run - which I really dread but is a very fun, big event - and that is cancelled for this year now. Overall though, it was a nice run and felt easier than most of my recent ones. At least the flatter/downhill/non-stairs parts.
I didn't see very many people but I did see some students being packed up in cars to go home and some that seemed to have bags of takeout food packages from somewhere on campus. I feel badly for the students and hope they have all figured out places to live and ways to get home.

Thanks @quilteryoyo!
@shanaber I have heard of thundershirts but I don't know anyone who has used one. It's good to know that they work. I'll have to look into that.
@Duck_Puddle My half is also on 5/16. It isn't canceled yet and we are all just hoping that things will be better by then.3 -

Yeah. I’m hopeful but not optimistic for the May race. I don’t even know if the state would give the race company an answer in time for them to prepare. That isn’t meant to be so doom and gloom sounding. Just that it’s a big race so if the state doesn’t decide something until a day or two ahead of time, I don’t know if they will have time to do all the preparations for the race to actually happen. Plus NY, NJ & CT have all agreed to have a consistent message/closures/edicts/etc so even if NJ (where the race is) would be OK with it; if NY (or CT) isn’t-it won’t happen.
And I follow a lot of dogs on Instagram and many of them swear by thundershirts (for storms and just general anxiety). Demon Spawn isn’t storm anxious so I’ve never tried one on her. My old man dog was super scared of thunderstorms And I would have tried it with him if I knew anything about them back then.

Hahaha @Duck_Puddle ! Sounds like the best race ever. I'll have to check out your Instagram.1

It really was fun. I hope people can enjoy even though it’s a ... non-traditional race report LOL.2 -
@Duck_Puddle I looked at your instagram photos - AMAZING!!! That is moving to the top of my list as a running destination. Great job on your "race". So glad you were able to go and enjoy that beautiful experience.1

Well done @Duck_Puddle !

Awesome race @Duck_Puddle
rest day here, and our first 2 cases of confirmed covid in my city, fortunately not patients I've worked with. I suspect by the end of the weekend NZ will be in full lock down. And I KNOW I'm going have have an exposure! Probably early next week. I'm working over the weekend so... We will be taking all precautions, but sadly it's not 100%10 -

I've done the math, and I only need to run 7 more times this month to hit my goal. That's 7 runs in 13 days. Totally doable. And that's even if I only run 3 miles at a time. I'm going to shoot higher and try to beat my goal, but I would be happy just to make it.
This is my second time joining this challenge and this would be my first time meeting my goal. This would also put me at the most miles I have ever ran in a month.12 -
@Duck_Puddle Canyonlands is a beautiful place. We were there a few years ago and only saw a small portion of it. It's so huge! Definitely a place to see!2

It really is incredible. That’s why it’s on my list too. I am glad I was able to do some of it, and in a VERY leisurely fashion (including full potty stop at a regular bathroom with indoor plumbing and hot water and everything LOL). I can’t wait to see the rest.
The Arches Half Marathon (which is in October and put on by the same company) runs a different 13 miles on the same road (very similar scenery). So if an October date fits better, it’s just as beautiful and awe inspiring.3 -
Great work @Duck_Puddle!1

@Duck_Puddle - loved your 'non-traditional' race report and took a look at the Insta pictures. Absolutely beautiful and much as I remember from driving the 128 with my geologist dad explaining all the rock formations and layers to us. I do not remember the bike path, likely it is a newer addition.
@kgirlhart - before I actually purchased a thundershirt I made a makeshift one by wrapping an ace bandage around him from underneath his front legs to his belly like shown here https://www.k9ofmine.com/diy-thundershirt/ The shirt is easier and takes less time to put on so generally more convenient.1 -

Well it's official. NZ borders are CLOSED. Unless you live here, you can't get in.
This may not seem like much, but we tend to be so isolated down here, so to be completely locked down like this, it feels very very real. I mean we are an island anyway but it just feels even more isolating.8 -

Thank goodness my husband and I decided not to fly to Fiji this morning!
Me stuck in one country, my kids in another - my worst case scenario.8 -

My race in May (Pittsburgh Marathon) has already been canceled.
I think you can pretty much write off anything in May. I do not see us on the other side of this till July, at best, IF people take it seriously. The fewer people that do so the longer this will take. Sorry.4 -

Yeah, I would cancel any and all trips for next 6 months then reevaluate the future in a few months. Not sure where y'all are on the infection curve, but, yeah, its best to stay home for now.0
