So back to our main topic. I'm not standing in theatre (OR) wearing several lbs of lead, and my knees are aching. I'm actually looking forward to my first rest day in 3 months tomorrow.
Pools here I come!12 -
Yes, less coronavirus, more running. So on that note, I got the official photos from yesterday's event and there are a few nice ones (for a change).
Major sunstrike on the outward leg, hence the head down so as not to be blinded - only about 3km in here.
Joy at having made it to the top of the killer hill, which I think was about 13km.
Cruising home along the beach - around the 18km mark here. Should have been in the water!
The finish line. Absolutely beat. Doing my level best for a sprint finish.

@ContraryMaryMary You have beautiful, beautiful leg muscles. I so want mine to look like that. I'm impressed, just beautiful...2

Had a hard time getting out of bed this AM but managed it eventually, and decided to sacrifice another couple of hours of sick time so I could go for a run this afternoon.* The run was tough - hello shin splints my good friend - but I'm definitely feeling the afterglow right now. Yay! There was a confirmed case of the virus-that-shall-not-be-named at my husband's law firm, which is also where my running buddy works, so even though neither of them were directly exposed she's definitely not going to be joining me for a while. I'm kind of bummed about it, but I understand.
*Figuring out how to manage use of sick time for mental health when I set my own working hours is awkward. For example, I didn't work at all on Wednesday because of anxiety, but even though I'd planned to work eight hours that day I couldn't really tell until today (end of the work week) how much of that I'd need to use or how much I could make up. All that said, I feel incredibly fortunate that I'm able to be taking this time at all. My boss just approved me to go to a 35-hour work week for the next couple of months and I currently have a bunch of sick leave banked, so I'm good to go!6 -

Yes, awesome photos! Great form wish I looked like that lol. Also we have the same shoes..if those are the New Balance 1080 foam...great race!2 -
4 mile walk...today. I did sign up for a couple of virtual races...actually looking forward to that.
School has now been closed as we keep getting more cases and actually had a teacher test positive.
Yes fear drives a lot of panic behaviors. We do though have a situation that is absolutely serious and not being over hyped. Unfortunately there is more fear and panic because we were/are woefully unprepared.

@quilteryoyo fantastic magic mile! Before long, you’ll be able to keep that up for longer than a mile.0

Thanks @TheMrWobbly , @Tramboman , @rheddmobile , @LoveyChar , @hamsterwheel6 and @bearly63. I'm pretty happy with it, even though I know I wouldn't be that fast outdoors. I do need to find a flat spot - maybe go to a track, one of these days and see how I do. I might surprise myself. @rheddmobile I'd love to get a sub 30 minute 5K. I don't think I could sustain that pace right now, but who knows what the future holds.
@polskagirl01 I have no answers. I was wondering the same thing about a HM. I started this plan early. If I keep to it, I should be ready for a HM in mid-May, but mine isn't scheduled until September. I started purposefully early in case I needed to repeat some of the harder weeks. Still, I'm not sure what to do if I do get "done" 4 months early.
Those are some great photos @ContraryMaryMary . You're floating in two of them. Looks like an incredible place to run.
@MegaMooseEsq Glad you went out for the run, even if it was tough. Hope the shin splints go away quickly. Sorry you won't have your running buddy for a while.

Thanks @quilteryogo it was nice to get out on the trails and great mile time
@katharmonic and @kimlight2 thanks, it’s nice to be back
We are such a big running community that races and being canceled or postponed her left and right.
Regarding church the Catholic Church is letting folks off the hook, over 65, bad health and a few other things.
@Avidkeo what is wrong with people, so selfish. One of the guys I work with went out of the country and the company told him he needs to self quarantine for 14 days. Another coworker called me Friday to tell me he saw him in the airport heading out of town….again.
@PastorVincent I think that’s part of the issue, so few have been tested so we really don’t know the reality of those who are sick
Great pictures @ContraryMaryMary

So much talk about the virus.
I agree and disagree on several points and in different contexts. It’s impossible to know what i really think because we don’t have enough reliable information. The cases per day that are new are not reliable numbers because we don’t know when those people were tested. I think our numbers will be staggering once testing is more readily available and we aren’t waiting on the results of hundreds of tests.
I have a friend in Italy. She tells me that yes, it is as bad as they say.
As for the virus itself. There’s just not enough data. Yes, it’s bad. Really bad. But so are lots of things, especially if you’re vulnerable. Just. Not. Enough. Credible. Data.
In other news: i got some miles. I didn’t get all twelve. I got like 7. The pain started in my hip but then it was my knee and i was all klunky and lopsided and it was AWFUL. usually it isn’t my knee. Given that it was, I switched to cycling to get some more miles and had zero pain. And then i lifted.
Still no word on my race.
Still no word on potential domestic travel bans. I am still planning to go to Portland but I have a feeling it will not work out. They closed our schools today and lots of businesses and they mentioned the possibility of a two week lockdown. I am utterly shocked and maybe even a little bit in denial. I can’t believe this is really happening.
We have to be wise and compassionate and let the peace of God rule in our hearts.
I made a flip book with my son (it’s like 40 pages!) and took my daughter to get our nails done. Good day! I just want to stop being in pain so i can run happily and comfortably again.6 -
@quilteryoyo - Yay!! That is an awesome pace!
@ContraryMaryMary - great pictures and you look fantastic!
@polskagirl01 and @quilteryoyo - I don't know for marathon distance but have felt HM ready if I kept up the consistency of my regular runs and speed work as well as a long run each week.
on the covid-19 and fear discussion. I am older and my dh is even older (8+ years) and therefore we are in the higher risk category. I am not terrified, not panicked, not running to the store to but anything and everything in sight but we are trying to be smart and limit our outings and contacts. I do not think there is any sort of global fear mongering entity driving this other than our own human nature. I am also tired of hearing 'oh, it is nothing.' or 'its just the flu'. My worry is for the truly elderly and health compromised and our health care workers one of which is my daughter. Our national leaders in the US have chosen not to lead on this but our local Governors and Mayors are taking it upon themselves to be the leaders and set down rules that honestly we all should be considerate of to keep everyone safe. If you look at the exponential curves, we are tracking very similar to Italy and Spain just a few weeks behind. If we all participate in what is being asked of us we may have an opportunity to change the track of that curve.
Had an unexpectedly cold and wet run yesterday, no jacket and it decided to pour when we were halfway out. Today wore my jacket as it looked even worse out but there was no rain and the sun even came out for a bit, of course.

From a medical imaging standpoint, its very different from the flu. One of the symptoms is pneumonia. Most pneumonias are in one lung, so you still have capacity. Covid effects both lungs. That's one of the biggest, and concerning, differences. Makes it incredibly hard to treat.3 -

@Avidkeo what are your thoughts on how covid would affect someone like me - asthmatic but mostly healthy?
I feel like I’m probably in denial about how serious the virus is and then i have this guilt complex because there are so many people that i love (and those that i don’t know) that are vulnerable1 -

Honestly I don't know enough about it, and am not a dr. But as it effects the lungs so much, I think anyone with resperatory disease should take standard precautions. Avoid people who are diagnosed with it, wash hands, etc.3 -
@ContraryMaryMary congratulations and great pics!
Great job to those able to get out and run this weekend, especially the runs that turned out to be good ones. What a nice reprieve.

I had an OK long run this morning. It was a little chilly but the best part was the sun was out and it made things seem relatively ok. A pretty large group of runners assembled. I think people needed to get out and talk to each other. The organizers took a lot of precautions but it was still a group gathering so maybe not the best thing. Most of us tried to keep our appropriate social distance. I have to say it was a big comfort to run with a few of my friends and just talk it out. Most of the small group I ran with are teachers and our public schools just announced they are closing for a month, so there was a lot to talk about. It was tough getting to 7 miles as the group mostly stopped sooner than that, but one other friend agreed to one last loop with me to finish up so I was grateful.
I also went for a short hike including a tiny bit of outdoor rock climbing. It was much scarier than the indoor variety - no padded floor! I only tried one really low=difficulty one, I don't know that I'm up for that in general but it was an adrenaline rush! If I do it for real, I'd want a guide and crash pads!
Other than that, I was at work for several hours as I suspect that our access to actually going in to work is going to get cut off very soon. I think I'm going to have to make some tough decisions tomorrow about whether some major deadlines are going to be met or not. Not how I pictured my spring break starting. But in perspective, my problems are not on the scale of others so I'm trying to remember that.
Thank you @noblsheep for your words - it does really help to hear from you having made it through.7 -
3.2 miles yesterday and 3.7 today, nothing fantastic6
-
5 miles on the Greenline. Was not feeling it at all - the weather was chilly and depressing, and so was the news - but as expected felt better once I got out there. First mile felt really good in fact. I think I might be adjusting to my new shoes.
The streets were eerily empty on the way to the park, and the park itself was almost empty, so I was thinking people must be staying home more because of Coronavirus, but then we stopped on the way home for takeout bbq and the joint was so packed we couldn’t get in the parking lot. So I guess it was just people not wanting to exercise in bad weather. Or possibly some people have read the news that community centers are closed and thought it applied to the parks as well. Parks are officially still open for the moment but the ymca, libraries, and community centers are all closed for now.
We saw a bunch of deer, a heron eating a fish, and six coots! We have lots of coots but they are more shy than ducks so it’s rare to see them close up.7 -
@Camaramandy648 So sorry that you are in so much pain. Your knee pain could be from compensating for the hip pain and running with a weird gait. Glad biking worked out. I have forgotten, have you been to the doctor yet? Maybe it's time if you haven't.
Thanks @shanaber . I am thinking I'll probably try to find some 10K races and either repeat the last 4 - 6 weeks of the plan or maybe look at a marathon plan to start at about the point of a HM. I'll decide when I get to that point.
@katharmonic Glad your run was ok and you got to try some outdoor rock climbing. I would be one that would have to be tethered. No free climbing for me.
@rheddmobile Glad you got a run in. You have a great place to run and see all of that wildlife.1 -
@ContraryMaryMary Wow....what an absolutely gorgeous place to run! You look strong!1
-
@LoveyChar I think its fantastic.
@Camaramandy648 Sorry to hear that your hip hurt. Impressed that you hopped on the bike and kept going. Grit!!!!!
I am heading to my local HEB (grocery chain) to get some toothpaste and some version of protein for dinner. Wish me luck. If I don't return, may you all PBs some time in 20202 -
My daughter currently has 60% lung capacity so I am taking sensible precautions and we are all still getting on with our lives. Too much dis-information for me to make any calls other than follow the official advice given. My posts will now onwards be a covid free zone!
Having said that I might buy a second hand rowing machine in case we get quarantined, I was saving it for my SOs birthday which is only timing.
You have a great part of the world to run in @ContraryMaryMary
Glad you had good time with your family and hope you are back to full fitness soon @Camaramandy648
That sounds like a great day of exercises @katharmonic
My training plan is now set for the next 9 weeks. Whilst I have nothing specific to work towards I want to be ready should a summer marathon opportunity arise and if not I will start a new plan in June.

Sunny, low 30s F this morning with a little frost and a little wind from the east. I was planning to get new shoes today, but decided to get them yesterday instead. Good thing -- all New Balance retail stores are closed beginning today. Went easy in the new shoes and although the hip pain was there, it was not radiating into the knee.
In retrospect, I have done the SAME STUPID THING I do to myself all the time. If I run 5 days a week, I feel strong, so I up my runs to 6 days a week. After a couple of weeks, I begin to break down, so I cut back to 5 days a week, wondering why my right SI joint, hip and knee hurt. It's only a problem from October to April, when I'm not playing golf two days a week.
Please forgive me for unloading...

It's only a problem from October to April, when I'm not playing golf two days a week.
Please forgive me for unloading...

Great timing on the shoes, but sorry about the hip pain. It sounds like you need to make a note to yourself for the next time you're thinking about adding a sixth day. That or find an off-season cross-training activity!1 -

I'm thinking about running the race on my own - same day/time/course. Would you be interested?
@MegaMooseEsq Absolutely! I was going to be running that day anyway and I've enjoyed the course during previous years.1 -
Got to work today to an email asking everyone to work from home until further notice, so I'll be heading home this afternoon. I would be dreading it a lot more if not for the encouragement I got here last week. I feel capable of doing this.
Race closures are impacting everyone! My brother-in-law was supposed to have his first half-marathon this weekend and he'd been training really hard. He's in the Bay area, so of course it was cancelled. Fortunately, the course was one he could run on his own and he did!
I'll be doing the same thing this weekend for my ten mile. It still seems really remote right now, although community transmission is now confirmed for my state.
Good weekend for running. Lots of sunshine! I'm almost to 70 miles on a monthly goal of 100.
