Facing a tough decision about going to church this morning. Yes, the "Pastor" in "Pastor Vincent" is real.
I have been struggling with this decision since Friday. I think will stay home and watch online, not out of any fear for myself, but to model the correct behavior.
It would be hypocrisy for me to say things like “take this seriously, and if you are in a high-risk group stay home,” and be there as my heart condition (chronic congestive heart failure) puts me in that high-risk group.
As a leader, I need to lead through word and deed.
Thankfully we have three pastors and it is not my turn to preach, so my spot is covered and we have everything, even Sunday School already live setup to stream live. Our online infrastructure has really matured over the last year and we are ready for that part of this at least.15 -

Even if I somehow deleted a letter from her name! Now how did I do that?
Also a big Thank You to @noblsheep for the encouragement! Glad things are going back to normal for you.0 -
@noblsheep yes, thank you for your voice of reason! Over here it's the zombie apocalypse, and toilet paper is the currency. So, so idiotic.
@Elise4270 thanks for the video. It was very informative.
@ContraryMaryMary really great race. I do see a PB in your future for the last race of the series.
@PastorVincent I think you are making the right call not attending services. Our church cancelled live services and is only doing online (for this Sunday), but likely for the next few weeks.
My son is supposed graduate from Texas A&M in early May, and as of now, they haven't cancelled that. But I won't be surprised if that happens.3 -

March Goal: 170k
January Total: 161k
February Total: 167k
2020 Total through February: 328k
Had a little snow overnight; it was partly cloudy with temps in the low 30s F and a wind from the north again this morning. My intent was to do 11k, but my hip and knee decided they didn't feel like going that far, so I cut it short instead. This old age gets more and more irritating every day.
When you pop in here claiming your December 2020 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
Return to a good running weight of 175 lbs
Run at least 4 5k races
Get a 5k PR
Average at least 138k per month, to meet my Run the Year pledge of 1,020 miles
Stretch goal: If I can average 169k per month, I can run 2020K in 2020
Run the Year Team: Pavement Pounders
2020 races:
4-25 Shine the Light 5k, Twinsburg, OH
5-23 Race for the Parks 5k, Hudson OH
6-20 Freedom Run 5k, Aurora, OH6 -
@Elise4270 Thanks for the video. The part about the faulty plumbing in apartment buildings is just so gross! It's good to be informed and have credible information. I know they are wanting to "lower the curve" with social distancing, but sometimes it feels like they are going a little too far. And, if it works, everyone will probably say it wasn't necessary, but, in reality, that would be why the outbreak wasn't too bad. (I feel like I'm talking in circles. Hope that's understandable.)
@noblsheep Thanks for the pep talk from someone who has been there, done that.
Congratulations on your race @ContraryMaryMary . It sounds like parts were really tough, but you hung in there and got it done with an excellent pace. You're gonna kill the last one!
@kgirlhart I have the Forerunner 235. Plan to look into the virtual pacer later today.
@polskagirl01 Now he's standing in the hole? I would definitely be curious. Maybe even enough to ask him what he was doing. Looks like a beautiful place to run.
@PastorVincent I think you made the right decision. The United Methodist Churches here were "mandated" by the Bishop to cancel live services, but continue to use the on-line method. A few churches, including mine, decided to still have some of their services live, but encouraged those in the high risk categories to stay home and join by radio or on-line. I chose to stay home. I guess, in theory, I am high risk as I am over 60, barely, have a heart murmur, have an aortic aneurysm, and have high blood pressure (controlled). I don't feel like I'm high risk though. I do want to take precautions to not carry it to my mom and dad. Dad is especially high risk, even though he is doing great for 88 years old.

@LoveyChar - I'm sorry to hear about your daughter. Hopefully she isn't afraid of dogs going forward.
My first Doberman was very chill and just looked intimidating. The Great Dane I had at the same time was the one I had to be very careful with. He was great when I took him to the nursing home to visit my Dad but on walks he was always on alert and didn't like people or dogs coming near him. He did lunge at 2 people who came in into my home so I knew the potential was there. My current Doberman fixates on people and other dogs so I am always extra careful with him when we are out. He did bite my husband on the butt to protect me, as a warning, but didn't break the skin. I am always shocked at people who just walk up to a dog they don't know and try to pet them.1 -
@PastorVincent - I think you made the right decision. You need to set a good example but you also need to take care of yourself.
@skippygirlsmom - welcome back!
@ContraryMaryMary - It still sounds like a great race. Congratulations on beating your friend.1 -

@Elise4270 Thanks for the video. I wonder why the attitude toward face masks in so different East vs. West... interesting.
I could only speculate. Our population density is less and we can mostly stay 1-2 meters (3-6ft) from one another. The droplet size doesn't stay suspended for long and merely lives a day on surfaces. It tends to incite panic here. There are some that do wear them, probably immune compromised like cancer treatment folks. I heard that even the respirators available to thwart paint fumes when painting are gone. And of course, the availability of masks are short and should be reserved for those most at risk for contact, our health care workers.
I am amazed at the amount of people finally washing their hands though. Perhaps this will put a dent in the flu numbers too.
I wonder if we are going to do this every March now??? sweet march break every year? stock up, get your training runs in, stay away from people. gah! my introvert looooovvveeeesss that! I cant wait to have the world to myself! haha! although I wont be running for a bit longer. I may have to embrace the suck of cycling.
@PastorVincent we still have mass. I think that just an unnecessary risk. I'm sacristan this month and if i weren't I'd have bailed. Protect the people.
Glad everyone loved the video.3 -
My plan called for 3 miles with one of them being a Magic Mile (as fast as I feel I can go without being completely dead at the end). I did half mile warm up walk, one slow mile, the Magic Mile, another slow mile, and another half mile cool down walk. I did all of this on the treadmill. The Magic Mile I did at 0% incline. I HAVE A NEW PERSONAL BEST FOR A MILE - 9:37 minutes. This beats the Magic Mile I did on Feb 22 by 17 seconds. I think I could have gone faster, but didn't want to push it too hard. I was surprised that 6.5 mph didn't feel too bad - actually pretty comfortable for short time I ran at that pace.

Erf. The PGH Marathon sent another email. Now they are saying: "still no idea if we will cancel or not, but if we do we will offer virtual race or refund."
Of course, they need a wall of text to say that. I would rather have heard "your entry deferred to next year" than either of those options, but I probably take the refund and sign back up as soon as I can. We will see.7 -
Great going @quilteryoyo and a really impressive time!@Elise4270 Thanks for the video. I wonder why the attitude toward face masks in so different East vs. West... interesting.
Having worked in both China and Japan face masks are not unusual to see in everyday life and they are generally accepted.
Sitting down working out my plan for the new marathon date in September. I really don't want to go back to 4 and 5 milers though.
On a good note I passed my Q1 mileage target yesterday so still on for 2020 miles.

That's a great mile, magic or otherwise!!!1 -
Hi!
I had given up on running this weekend because i have my kids but i can’t. I’m about to leave to try to get my scheduled twelve miles. All devices are on and fully charged and the gym is like one minute from my house. I hope this works out.
Schools haven’t shut down but everything else is. Even church. We watched online today. It was about fear and the stance we should take and feeling stuck.
@LoveyChar i am so sorry about your daughter!
Everyone else whose races are getting cancelled and postponed, i am so sorry! We’re all going to feel this in one way or another, I’m afraid
Let’s keep. Moving. Forward.3 -
@PastorVincent you absolutely made the right idea. It's driving me bonkers the number of people I've seen saying "yep I'm self isolating. Until Sunday when I go to church". God is everywhere. He will understand.
We are up to our 8th case, an idiot Australian who travelled to the US, was around people who were positive for covid, got tested for it, and travelled to NZ anyway. His test came back POSITIVE. Oh and yes he was symptomatic. Ffs.
I admit that I was really blase when this first came out, but I underestimated humanities ability to be stupid and selfish.
Sorry rant there, but it's frustrating. And the same people who are saying the government isn't doing enough, are the same people who are complaining of things getting shut down. Sigh.
And as a healthcare worker, I don't get a choice about working from home. I'm not an RN or a Dr so will be protected a little, but we WILL be getting patients through xray who are positive for the virus and I will be doing everything I can to protect my patients, my family and myself.
Woah sorry guys. Verbal diarrhoea.
Did 5k this morning. Hal was happy. Such a nice app lol.14 -
@quilteryoyo Wow, you’re really getting faster! 9:40 is pace for a sub-30 5k!1
-
@noblsheep Thanks for the advice. So many anecdotes coming from places that are weeks ahead of us and no one here seems to be listening. Italy is breaking my heart.
@LoveyChar Sorry to hear about your daughter! I don't know what's scarier - A dog bit or the trip to the ER right now in this crazy time. I told my daughter that she might not fear the virus personally but if she needs an emergency procedure, she might be at risk. I got an eye roll which means she heard me at least
@ContraryMaryMary Sounds like a great race! Glad they are not being cancelled!!
@PastorVincent Seems like most of the church's here are going online. I saw an infographic today tracking the outbreak in South Korea, with contact tracking, showing how patients 1 -31 had infected people. Patient 31 had gone to a church, a hospital (not feeling well) and a buffet.

@kimlight2 @Camaramandy648 @shanaber @katharmonic Thank you! She is fine. Her thigh is torn up and she's sore but she was laughing and playing on social media in the emergency room that night. Sometimes I wonder if kids of this generation ponder over things the way we did, growing up without phones to distract them and engage their almost every waking thought.
@shanaber I'm sorry you suffered a dog attack and you're right...can't always judge a dog by it's breed relation. I see little, yippy chichuauas and I get anxious. Some people say their bark is bigger than their bite but I don't trust little yappy dogs, either, all the time. Ours is a mutt but she's got cattle dog in her and they're bred to nip cow's heels to coral them and she cannot stand people jumping around (aerobics, dancing) so she'll nip the back of ankles. I'm glad to hear you're planning to enjoy a get together today. I hope you got your potatoes. But even if not, lots of other good options to make...you'll have to let us know...
@quilteryoyo Nice job! I've said it before and I'll say it again, you're faster than me and a few years older. Inspirational that YOU DON'T GIVE UP and I hope I can always say that...!!!
To All Reading: Live in fear (please DO NOT), because that is what you are being conditioned right now to do. You might not see the bigger picture or realize how this is the global manufacturing of fear by whom you do not see, but I PROMISE YOU...it is. Be wise, be smart, pray to God and always fight for what is just and right. Stop giving attention to the fear-mongers, as you are feeding a hellacious monster. Don't be controlled. As @Avidkeo said, "God is everywhere." Never be afraid to bow your head and pray, whether you're home or in public. God is almighty and ever loving. Trust in God, always trust in God. This life is temporary. Every single knee will bow one day, oh what a glorious and breathtaking day that will be... I am so grateful to God and so blessed for gifts bigger than the eye can see. I'm sure I've offended someone. But hey, what's new?!
If you have a compromised immune system or are elderly, to a degree, I understand the panic. I really do. Stay safe, please. Be careful.
When I was in labor with my son, I almost died twice when my blood pressure dropped to critically low levels. I was revived through immediate shots into my bloodstream. When I was informed that an urgency c-section was necessary to save his life because the umbilical cord was strangling him and he was suffering, I made peace with passing. I did not think we would both survive. But if anyone was to go, I'd only pray it was me... My biggest fear wasn't death, but leaving my kids before I could teach them the things I need them to know.
I am having an emotional day, part of this human experience...

@Scott6255 I feel your pain. Longhorn senior daughter here. Assuming a cancellation. I think I am more bummed than her. She is so focused on figuring out her next step that graduation is the last of her worries. I hope they don't cancel! Gig 'em👍2
-
I decided to dive into my new reality and rented a bike at the running trail. Rode 8.5 miles while my husband ran his run. It was ok. I couldn’t get my heart rate up enough and the bike only had 3 gears. It will get better. It was misting out but so nice to be outside, fresh air and lots of Red Buds blooming! I might try to get a used bike so we can still go together on Sundays.

@quilteryoyo That is fantastic! Congrats on the PB!1
-
@Avidkeo Agree completely. Just look at our leadership, shaking hands after exposure. Congressmen telling people to go out to dinner to support restaurants (agree with the support part but not sure going out is smart) . Our own dear leader here tweeting pictures of Corona beer and telling people not to panic. Meanwhile, our healthcare workers are slammed and exposed. Per the Telegraph (UK), Italy is making some really difficult decisions regarding people over 80. You have every right to rant. I hope you stay safe !!4

Training question I'm pondering...
Say you're one of the many people who got through all of the training for their marathon and were just starting their taper when their race was postponed to Fall. Like @TheMrWobbly said, you might not want to go back to the beginning. What's the minimum training you'd need to do to maintain your fitness without getting burnt out by the time your marathon comes back around?0 -
2.8 miles yesterday and 7.2 today. Low motivation because the marathon might end up canceled. Anxiety that I won't be ready if it's not. Still not sure which side I'm leaning more towards. At least I recognize how lucky I am to have such trivial worries. Glad to already love the treadmill and extremely thankful it's in my own living room.

Errr for the record, I'm an Atheist. But I know that one of the Central teachings of the church and frankly common sense.
As far as the fear goes, yes I do believe there is a bit part of fear mongering going on. until you look at Italy. The death toll there is huge. And while I'm not afraid for myself, I am afraid for loved ones. Are people going over the top, absolutely (toilet paper). Should they be afraid of this? Yes absolutely. The health authorities were trying to warn us, and governments didn't listen. Now the horse has bolted, and they are finally listening.
Shame they can't do the same for other major problems facing up.8 -
Fear and panic solve nothing, save for a shortage of problems.
We are up to 4 confirmed cases in my town now, but there has only been like 50 people tested so that is not a very reliable number, IMO.

SUNDAY UPDATE - Pastor Vincent vs Boston!
For those new/or with short memories I recently hired a coach to help me run faster - with the goal of a BQ in 2021. It is probably an unrealistic goal, but I am not getting any younger, so going for it. Several people asked to be updated on what the coach has in for me so I post each week what the coach's plan was, and what I actually did.
So here we go:
DAY :::: PLAN :::: ACTUAL
Monday :::: 8 Miles + 1/2 mile repeats :::: 4 mile walk, 8 mile run, 1/2 mile repeats
Tuesday :::: Rest Day ::::: 1 hour cross training
Wednesday :::: 10 miles :::: 10 Miles
Thursday :::: 10 miles + strides :::: 10 miles
Friday :::: Rest Day ::::: 5k walk
Saturday ::::: 14miles :::: 14 miles
Sunday ::::: 6 miles ::::: 6.5 Miles
Total Miles: 51.5

As Christians we’re in an interesting position. We’re supposed to “fear not them which kill the body but are not able to kill the soul.” But that doesn’t mean we’re supposed to stand on top of moving cars or walk around stabbing each other for fun. Life in this world is not the most important thing to us, but we show our obedience to God through how we treat each other in this world. That includes, among other things, not being careless with other people’s lives, and not becoming carriers of deadly diseases when there are measures we can take to prevent it.
Italy is stockpiling dead bodies in freezers because they can’t bury them fast enough. Iran claims only 500 deaths, but the claim is belied by new mass graves visible from satellites. It’s not hysteria to obey the directives of our health professionals and avoid spreading disease.8 -
Being cautious or engaging discernment is not the same as living in fear. People are no longer being cautious; they are overreacting out of pure FEAR. There is a VAST difference. That is all I will say. I'm done.4
