03/20 201.1 (+0.5) Back to work today. Mom’s surgery was originally scheduled for April 21st and by 10am they called her to say its being moved up to next Tuesday. I had to scramble to get days requested off and get people notified. (My FMLA was approved to provide transportation to/from appointments.) Things in the hospitals and outpatient clinics are tightening up. No visitors except day of and day after surgery. Employees are having their temperature taken upon entering the buildings. Good news is that I have enough vacation time to put in for the week after Mom comes home. She has a 5 to 7 day inpatient stay though. 😔😔

Still on general self-isolation. Daughter sent me a lovely fruit basket from M&S as we have decided not to visit for the moment. Staying in touch with both my girls on Messenger.

The downward trend is a bit slow for my liking, but at least it's is still downward.

- Strengthen strategies to reframe the tendency to use unhealthy snack food as a reward/treat.
- Make sure I have prepared healthy snacks available

Back Story:2018:2020
My goal was to get down below 160, to allow me to enjoy the indulgences of holidays and celebrations.
2019:
I exceeded that and have been below 150 for most of the last 2 months.
In 2018, I put on 10 lbs over the last 2 months of the year.
In 2019, I consistently lost weight since the end of July. I put on about 4lbs over the Christmas break, but was still below my original 2019 goal.
That's a WIN in my book!
Focus: maintenance! I might even manage to lose a bit more ever so slowly.

THERE ARE NO QUICK FIXES OR SHORTCUTS to achieving permanent change.
REMINDERS One or two thoughts which might give heart to some of you.Stick with the process. It DOES work! But it does take time, effort, and most of all, patience!- Daily weight fluctuations are normal, and can be as much as 2 lbs a day for no apparent reason.
- A general downward trend is what we are looking for.
- Eating out can cause apparent weight gain because of high sodium levels, but usually goes quickly. Drinking extra water helps with this.
- The human body does not react instantly to what we do to it. Sometimes it can take several days to see results.
- Plateaus are a normal part of the process. The body is consolidating and adapting to your new way of eating/exercising.
- The closer you get to your goal weight, the more difficult it becomes to lose weight, as your body becomes more efficient at using what you feed it.
- When you exercise you build muscle, which takes up less space than fat, so use measurements as well as weight to assess your progress.
- Getting/Staying fit and healthy requires a lifestyle change for most people.

03/18 – 165.8 – Starting this round in a good place. Although I didn’t post last round, I managed weigh in and meet my calorie and exercise goals most days. Today was a pretty good day, despite the grim news reports and increasing restrictions. My online class went pretty well and I met my goals. I’m finding stability in the habits I’ve developed and serenity in my outdoor walks.
03/19 – 164.6 – After a rainy start to the day, the weather cleared and I got out for a walk again, tackling a more rugged trail to get my heart rate up. I’m glad the parks are still open, although I don’t know how long that will last. Got a few chores done, but much of the day was spent addressing online teaching issues and providing long-distance support for stressed family members. My sleep schedule is totally shot, but I’ve been pushing myself to fix simple, reasonably healthy meals and to stay hydrated. Glad to have the structure of these challenges to help me stay grounded.
03/20 – 164.6 – Unseasonably warm, but such a delight to get out in short sleeves and enjoy the weather. I skipped most of the chores and took the dog for a long walk in the park. Did well on calories but a little under on hydration.

Realistically I’m doing the exact same things—eating green, exercising—but I’m also out of routine with this working at home and have a higher level of anxiety as reflected in a rising average resting heart rate. So I’m ok with maintaining—my goal is to be compassionate with myself right now. Compassionate by being healthy, but not harsh.

03/18 134.4 – 7.08 miles walked yesterday, met up with sisters for afternoon tea.
03/19 134.2 – rain all day yesterday meant only managed to walk 4.83 miles, kept eating well under control though so 218 calories in credit, but carbs over.
03/20 134.2 – 6.47 miles walked yesterday. C-19 ? Biggest problem here in my area of the UK is stupid people stockpiling, shelves are cleared of TP, nappies, long life milk, flour, pasta, rice, long life milk, frozen veggies, basically anything with a long shelf life!! WHY ?? If everyone just shops as normal there is plenty for everyone. Schools shut for everyone except children of key workers from end of today. All over 70's are self isolating for 12 weeks & all public gatherings have been stopped. I am standing by and prepared to help with fetching & carrying, walking dogs etc. for anyone self isolating – I've not been called on yet. I think it's the media's approach that is causing the panics, so there have been minimum deaths so far here, far less than from other ailments, so why stockpile? Luckily, we're not on lock down; if I couldn't get out and walk I would go crazy, I really hope it doesn't come to that!!! Stay calm everyone and shop as normal.
03/21 134.8 – 5.5 miles walked yesterday, spent majority of day at my elderly housebound & in early stages of dementia MIL's, took her some essential supplies to find her just sitting in her chair staring at a blank TV screen. “They've switched our electricity off, have they switched yours off?” She had not had a hot drink or eaten although she does have cold food available there. So after checking the neighbours was on, using their microwave to give her a hot meal and cup of tea, I started to try to get the power back on. Made some phone calls to power company and BIL & finally established that the cooker socket was tripping out the power. All this took time, but so glad to get everything back on. Gently chastised her to phone us if it happens again, but as she is stone deaf & has lost her hearing aids !!!!! She was due to be reassessed for new ones yesterday, but the home appointment was cancelled as she is in the very vulnerable group. She also will not accept any carers & lots of help of us her family too, she gets very annoyed at us thinking we are interfering and taking her independence away, thing is she is not capable of doing much anyway
it's like walking on eggshells and very frustrating as we really want to help!

03/18 - 164.7 I'm really losing track of my goals. I haven't worked out in 9 days and I completely binged out on snacks yesterday. I'm definitely in a downward spiral. I usually track my weeks from Sunday through Saturday which means I'd keep on this path and start fresh on Sunday. That's too long. I am starting fresh today. I can do this. Please help hold me accountable!
03/19 - 164.9 Wrong direction. I did get a workout in and stayed relatively close to my calorie goal. Going to workout today and stay under my calorie goal!
03/20 - 164.9 Well I got a workout in however I went WAY over my calorie goal. On the bright side, I ate all the snacks in my house so I have no more temptations. As long as I break even this round I'll be happy.
03/21 - 164.0 Getting close to breaking even! My SO offered to go get me my fav snacks while practicing social distancing and renting and watching The Invisible Man at home. Guess what, I said no! I would not have been able to use portion control and it was past my eating period.

3/19 254.4 That’s the previous low I hit anything lower will be a new low. I was looking through my phone at older photos and then I saw my newer ones, the difference is so profound. It really helped me to see how far I’ve come.
3/20 255.2 Early weigh in, Japanese take out, and a lack of sleep. On the plus side I got to the store early enough to get potatoes and chicken.
3/21 254.4 I’m glad to be back down I had a high sodium lunch, which sometimes gives me a bounce up. I also hit ovulation time according to my health app, so I’ll see if I hold or manage to drop. Sometimes if I’m really careful I can still see a drop or two, but usually I hold or bounce around.

I believe it’s stress. I’m a nurse and on the front lines in the er and icu . So far no corona in our hospital but it’s still stressful. I am getting a hip replacement on the 25 th so more stress but I’m continuing to try to stay on plan.

well the surgery is now off. I was waiting for the other shoe to drop. I have to call my short term disability and rescind that and get back to work. We are tentatively scheduled for May 6. My surgeon felt bad but it’s out of his hands. Our hospital system has 28 hospitals and over 750 icu beds and not one patient with the virus but the government is forcing them too. I do understand but having none on bone pain and knowing I have to endure another 5 weeks just stinks.

In a weird way I’m fine with holding steady within a pound of 180 for the past 5 weeks. I’m no longer gaining as I was, my metabolism is settling down, and I’m getting a good sense of what my maintenance calories really are. I haven’t been exercising much but as the weather warms up I’ll get back to walking long distances and I’m planning to expand one garden and plant a new herb garden (assuming the nurseries are open), so that will help. I also have some house painting (inside) left to do, so if I can keep my calories steady, I should start to lose again. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. Now to shake this stupid cold! I hope you’re all finding ways to stay calm and healthy and in touch through these chaotic times.

How’s everyone doing? I’m trying to keep busy with my work (writing) and things I’ve put off for ages (sorting photos, going through clothes for what no longer pleases...). I’ve been trying to talk to one or two friends every day on the phone — social media are great, but we need to hear voices. I was going to teach a couple of writing classes this spring and summer, but they’re cancelled, of course, so I’m setting them up to teach online and hoping that will be productive for everyone involved. I’m looking forward to warmer weather so I can play in my garden. I’d love to hear what others are doing to stay healthy and as happy as possible during these difficult times.

All things considered, okay. I did get out for a walk yesterday morning — it was 64 degrees F and lovely. Then the wind came up and the temp dropped 25 degrees by noon! Whoa! And now it’s trying to snow. Harumph. Oddly, even though we’re stuck at home I’m not snacking, and we are eating healthily. I’m a bit stir crazy but having a sinus headache that makes me go to bed for a while has helped
— make lemonade, right? Last week I found a gorgeous Bassett entertainment center in a second hand store and it was delivered yesterday — see picture. We’re adding shelves inside — lots of storage space! I hope you’re all finding creative, loving ways to ride this out. Stay healthy!

I'm going to pretend I'm sequestered away on a healthy retreat to lose weight for 2 months LOL. I've often thought if I could just go away for 2 months to concentrate on my weight, so here's my chance . My son's job has shut down for who knows how long (which I'm glad as far as his safety) but trying to figure out how to get him from Atlanta to Portland, Me, without being exposed on a train or plane. Is anyone still flying? I worked for an airline and have access to their flights real-time and it's unbelievable the number of open seats (about 30% capacity, if that, from BOS to ATL).
@fmfdfa2020 I write all sorts of things — currently working on the first book in a new mystery series and some essays, all nature, food, and travel oriented. I have a mystery series called Animals in Focus, but the publisher went out of business last year so I’m not sure about future books. I used to write books (17 of them) and articles about dogs and cats, but haven’t don’t that for a few years. I teach classes for adults through various local venues, all shut down for now, and I’m thinking now is a good time to try launching the online classes I’ve thought about for a couple of years.
Good plan on the healthy weight-loss retreat. A few years ago I was able to really focus on that — I lost 80 pounds between eating mindfully and exercising — walking and swimming a lot. I felt great! So best of luck! Are you in Portland? I did my MFA at U of Southern Maine.
Anyway, I think it’s really important to take care of ourselves and our loved ones, now more than ever. I try to stay informed but not read/listen to corona updates all day long. I’m also calling a couple of people everyday until I work through my list, then repeat if we’re still in this.

03/19 122.0 They finally closed our community center. My question is, why does it take 3 people to “man” the empty building through APRIL when no one can get in??? It seems like a lot MORE web surfing will be going on at our expense!

03/21 120.5 Apparently I’m more distracted than I had realized. I keep forgetting to make my daily post after I make comments. Yesterday I sat in our courtyard and enjoyed the sun and 59 degree afternoon. The view from the “park bench” I our courtyard.
