Mostly sunny, 60 degrees F, and a light breeze from the northwest today. Started out by feel; first k was slow pace; second k was easy pace; so I tried to finish at easy pace. First time I've done 11k at easy pace in a long time. 60 degrees F is at the top of my happy range for temperature.
When you pop in here claiming your December 2020 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?

SUNDAY UPDATE - Pastor Vincent vs Boston!
For those new/or with short memories I recently hired a coach to help me run faster - with the goal of a BQ in 2021. It is probably an unrealistic goal, but I am not getting any younger, so going for it. Several people asked to be updated on what the coach has in for me so I post each week what the coach's plan was, and what I actually did.
So here we go:
DAY :::: PLAN :::: ACTUAL
Monday :::: 6 miles + 8x1min sprints :::: 10 miles + 8x1min sprints
Tuesday :::: Rest Day ::::: Rest Day
Wednesday :::: 10 miles:::: 11 miles
Thursday :::: 10 miles + hill repeats :::: Donate Blood
Friday :::: Rest Day ::::: Rest Day
Saturday ::::: 18 miles :::: 18 miles
Sunday ::::: 6 miles ::::: 10 miles
Total Miles: 51 out of 44 planned
Pretty good week even if I did miss out on the hill repeat (shucky-darn ) I actually planned to do a marathon on Saturday, but it turned out I was not recovered enough from the blood draw. That combined with the heat (upper 70s F) sapped my energy and I aborted at 18 miles. 10 miles on Sunday were really slow too, but it was 76F air temp when I started and was still climbing. Time to readjust run expectations it seems.
Today (Sunday) would have been the PGH marathon, so a lot of local runners down in the city ran virtual races this weekend, but up here in the burbs I saw only one other runner and she was running with her doggie.
If the weather dips cooler again I might retry a marathon next week. We will see.6 -
May Goal: 100 Miles
5/3: 11.07 miles
11.07/100 miles completed for May
447.23/1000 miles for Run the Year Team Pavement Pounders
I finally got my first run for May in. I always hate when the 1st is on a Friday and I don't get to log a run until Sunday. I always feel behind, but I guess it is usually a long run and I'm not really behind. Today I ran 11 miles. It was my first run in the new shoes and they performed well. It was the hottest run for me so far this year. It started out at 74°F feels like 75°F which wasn't too bad, but by the end it was 83°F feels like 86°F. And the last 3-4 miles were pretty tough. I started out at 7:30 am which was really as cool as it got this morning so getting up earlier would have gotten me finished at a little cooler temperature, but not a lot cooler and it would have been about the same starting out no matter what time I got up. I did manage to have a decent enough pace given the heat. I did see a snake too, but he was a bull snake and not a rattlesnake.
ETA: I tried to post a picture of my snake., but it didn't work. 🤨

11/7/20: Run for 57th AHC Half Marathon10 -
I'm going to hop back in here. Not sure what to put as a goal for May just yet, but here is a recap of the last couple months and where I'm going now:
After my last marathon on Mar. 7, all my remaining races in Mar. and Apr. got cancelled. So I decided to use that as an opportunity to take some down time and finally heal old injuries. I spent about a month or so not running to heal.
When I started back up again, I started slowly. I'm not just running, but also doing some mobility exercises daily and highly specific strength exercises 6 days per week. I'm hoping to build up stronger and faster than I was before and hope to make some new PR's by fall.
Last week was just under 20 miles and was my 3rd week back. So you can see I'm going a bit slowly, but also trying to be careful and trying to be very intentional about training. That said, I'm starting to feel some early warning signs of the return of 1 of my injuries (peroneal tendonitis). I'm trying to be careful, but also build up properly... not easy.
Having said that, I'm looking at some races that are still happening as of yet - a 25K on May 16 and another 25K on May 24. Thinking about them, but not yet signed up. Will see...
Maybe 75 miles for May? Sure... let's go with that.

Mostly walking, hoping my knee stays behaved so I can add some more jogging and actual running later this week7 -
Hey guys.
Nice gentle 5k for me to start the week. The weather is awful, raining heavily. I of course managed to get the 45 minutes today it didn't rain haha. I was actually looking forward to a wet run but oh well.
@ContraryMaryMary I bought an icebreaker merino top. It was an eye watering $85 but given it should last years... Looking forward to getting it and trying it out. I tend to be a hot runner, and HATE pushing sleeves up if I get hot, but worry about my core getting to cold when running 3+ hrs in winter, so got a short sleeve one, and have sleeves to go with it. Hope it works well!
Ohhh thunder storm!7 -
Yay for the icebreaker @avidkeo. I tend to get hot running too (except for my extremities which remain frigid at all times - just ask my husband) but that's the joys of merino - keeps you warm without making you hot (not quite sure how that works, but people run in summer in merino - lightweight merino, albeit, but still merino).
To celebrate zero new *spoiler* cases today here in little old NZ, I just signed up for the next season's half marathon series - first race is in October (they have options for all the different lockdown levels), then December, February, March and April (gotta be over this social distancing faff by then, right? Got a tidy discount for early entry, and they're only taking 1000 registrations.
At the worst, and they're all Level 4 virtual events, I'll get half my money back, a free hoodie and running hat, and help keep the event organisers afloat (they're an awesome company and run the best events). At best, I have five new halves to look forward to, complete with shiny bling. Plus, I've yet to run the final of this season's series, which has been pushed out from April 5 to September 20.
Running, running, running!8 -
0504-10k, total-10k goal-100k
10km to kick off the month. It was scorching hot for the last few days (32-34 degrees in the afternoons), but it rained last night and today was quite nice. Run-wise, not much to report. I think I need new socks though, or maybe a new way to lace my shoes. Left foot was sliding around quite a bit and was just short of giving me blisters. Currently thinking about going from 3 runs a week to 4, haven't decided how yet.
Oh and the rumblings were correct. Back to a normal 5 days a week work schedule starting the day after tomorrow (we're on Labor Day holiday until the 5th). Besides the ubiquitous face masks, I guess we're done with this thing for the time being.
@katharmonic You are awesome!
Re: merino. I just got two shirts on clearance yesterday since summer is coming. They are 87% merino and 13% synthetic, and I'll report on how running goes once they're out of the wash.6 -

@ContraryMaryMary I know!!! I mean we will probably have cases again tomorrow and the next few days but feels like some sunshine at the end of the tunnel! Yay for signing up for the series, sounds cool! Same one you did last year?
Yay @noblsheep glad to hear you are heading back to some normalcy. Love sales, I suspect if I like it that much, I'll get more. But will watch for sales.1 -
Y'all, I did it! I went outside and I ran outside! First time I'd set foot outside since March 13th!
Actually felt a bit dizzy for the first 10 minutes. Then I forgot about that when I saw all the Covidiots. NEVER seen so many people 'exercising' at 8am on a Monday. Most with no masks or face coverings or anything and no intention of social distancing. I ran in the road whenever I had to pass anyone, pulled my buff up over my nose and mouth whenever I got close to anyone and still got stressed out. In the end I gave up on my nice flat road halfway through the second loop and headed for the hilly residential streets instead. Much quieter up there. Guess I'm going to have to learn to embrace hills for a while.
I was supposed to be doing fartleks... there were a couple of sprints to get past people before approaching cars could push me off the road but mostly I was too distracted to think about pace much. I still covered more distance than I expected to in the 45 minutes and it didn't feel very hard considering I haven't had to propel myself forwards for almost 2 months. YAY!
02/05: 11.3km race pace - treadmill
04/05: 6.15km fartleks - outdoor yay!
May goal: 140km. Run so far: 17.45km11 -
@eleanorhawkins woooo hoooo! Sorry about the covidiots. If it helps they are everywhere...0

@Faebert Checking in here every day sounds like a good plan, otherwise it gets tough to keep up with all the posts What kind of strength training do you do?
@katharmonic Wow, you did it, awesome!! I'm not sure if I would have managed to get up during the second night, after interrupted sleep the night before and running more than marathon distance already. Truly inspiring what you did
@eleanorhawkins Welcome back to outdoor runs! I've done a fair bit of my running on boring residential roads recently, saving the parks for late runs (after 22h). Okay, and occasionally risking to run along the coast near my parents house in daylight times, where I do see other people, but so far most of them are keeping the distance. Although it feels like a month ago a lot more people were really stepping off the path and facing the other way, and now they just move to the other side of the path to have a meter of distance while we pass each other. The only times I've encountered really stupid idiots getting too close was not while running, but in the supermarket...
@hanlonsk I'm glad I haven't come close to any idiots like those teenagers you've encountered. And also glad I didn't have to come close to that many bees ^^ I like honey, but I'm happy to just buy it from other people who are brave enough to face that many potentially string-y insects
@ContraryMaryMary Congratulations on the new distance PR!!

My second run of the month is done. An uneventful 5.5km, without any speedwork or anything special at all. Just enjoying the sun that came out during the second half of it.
10.5/100km for May done

Yesterday, I got in two miles in the morning, and then I cleaned house and was lazy. I was a bit sore from some of the strength training on Saturday. Since my body pump classes have been cancelled for the last two months, I haven’t been super consistent with my weights, and I can tell!
Total: 6.25 miles2 -

Merino wool is like magic. I only have socks and gloves but I tell you they are magical. They actually get WARMER when they get wet. Stepping in a puddle in the winter is way less of a problem when you have them on.

My baby finally moved upwards, which is a lot more comfortable on my bladder, but unfortunately puts a lot of extra pressure on my lungs. I have a feeling running is going to be a lot harder from here on out. The last two kind of sucked, but I'm hoping my breathing adjusts.
I'm only at about 5 miles of my 50 mile goal so far.7 -

I'd say give it another month or two at most? If we can stay at no new local cases till then most people will probably be too lazy to deal with them anymore. And boy they are hot in the summer.1
