@janejellyroll I’ve done this a couple of times now and I love this method. Especially as I’m getting older, it’s much safer and makes it more enjoyable. I’ll get to running the whole time soon enough.1

And happy mothers day! Well it was mother's day yesterday for me. Went for a big walk in the morning, then spent the afternoon with the kids, walking through a local reserve. It was just incredibly beautiful, and so calm and still.
One advantage of this lock down is that my two girls have gone from fairly indifferent siblings to best of friends. Ok they are only just 6 and 4, but honestly I was worried that they would never connect. Now I know that they may not be best friends for life, but the fact that at the moment they know they can rely on eachother, that's one of the best mothers day gifts I can get!
OK running, my legs felt great today as I set off for 6.5k. I'm really amazed at how well I recovered from Saturdays long run! I was expecting to be sore for days.
But I have to slow down again on the next run. I found I would do really well, then zone out and my pace would creep up. My average pace was 6:20m/pm. I probably need that closer to 6:30. Work on progress. And my aim for this coming Saturday8 -

Another week over, time for a quick check-in, then I will sit down and read the 8! pages that I missed over the weekend.
My runs this week:
5/5/2020 11.1 km - should have been 2km more, but I developed a really painful blister on my big toe after 5km and decided to quit early
5/6/2020 5.9 km , and
5/7/2020 7.9 km, uneventful evening runs
5/9/2020 1.7 km to the bakery to get croissants, 4.7 km after breakfast
5/10/2020 7.6 km in super sunny weather. Temperatures are supposed to drop to 12°C (53°F) tomorrow, but today it was 19°C (66F) in the shadow - and there was not nearly enough shadow where I was running. Hot enough that I enjoyed a nice, cold shower after getting home

@katharmonic I love all of the animals you see on your runs. Glad the horse was well behaved.

Thank you all again. We had a family zoom call as a memorial service. It was really nice seeing everyone from around the globe (I have a very large extended family from Africa, to Canada to England, etc).
Went for family bike ride and now waiting on dinner. Good day considering.

Went out to the woods today to take my new Hoka Challengers for a spin. They got plenty muddy and I got a slow 9.21 miles in on some fun technical trails.

From my Garmin Forerunner(for whatever reason it doesn’t have my distances the same as my treadmill. It’s always about .25 miles less). I don’t know if my treadmill would be more accurate or not so I’m going to go with the lesser amount.

5/10- 3 miles this was 4:1minute. 4minute Run @ 5.5 mph:walk 1 minute @3.5 mph

It was a great run. I did sneak in a couple 6 mph minutes in but my heart rate jumped up too high. I did a 5 minute 5 mph:1 minute 3.5 mph the run before on 6/8 and did much better with my heart rate though.

SUNDAY UPDATE - Pastor Vincent vs Boston!
For those new/or with short memories I recently hired a coach to help me run faster - with the goal of a BQ in 2021. It is probably an unrealistic goal, but I am not getting any younger, so going for it. Several people asked to be updated on what the coach has in for me so I post each week what the coach's plan was, and what I actually did.
So here we go:

This week was a cut back week, so it is a good week to miss some runs on. Saturday I could have run, but honestly, it was snowing, sub-freezing and windy and I really just was not in the mood to run in that kind of weather again. Sunday I had planned to run at least 10 but foot came down wrong on some rock and my knee started hurting so I aborted right away and walked home. Walking was fine, but any running felt bad. Thankfully I was only like 3/4th of. a mile from home.
I think it is time for new shoes too, which is disappointing. I have less than 1/2 the normal miles I put on shoes on these. I do have a backup pair, so I will run in them for a week and see how things go. My current shoes I think are causing some pains so I think I will tell coach I am going to do another easy week with the new shoes and see how things go.6 -

So...
1) If it is a good quality dreadmill and you are not using a footpod, then the dreadmill is going to be more accurate than the Garmin. Garmin is guessing distance based on arm swing which will only be ballpark
2) If you are using a footpod that has been properly calibrated for you, then the Garmin is more accurate.
3) If the dreadmill is suspect, then the Garmin is more accurate in all cases.
So there you go.

@PastorVincent I would think my Garmin watch is off. I’m not using a foot pod. My treadmill is decent, Nordic Track commercial 1750, it’s not the most expensive but it’s a good enough treadmill.2

You can adjust the miles on the Garmin watch when you do a dreadmill run. I forget the button combination but you can basically tell it it "No I ran 10.0 miles, not 9.25 miles" and it will update all the stats to reflect it.2 -

Welcome @robynmac5819 like so many others I started with walk walk walk run walk walk walk method ha ha I remember the first time I ran a full mile without stopping I cried and cried.
So I'm in this challenge and you need to run 600K by Labor Day weekend and we are headed to the beach, virtually at least for now. It started on May 7th, can you believe there are 2 people who have completed like 150 miles already in the first like 4 days, so I checked ones strava and he was walking or running for 8 hours for those days. Seriously who has time for that? 8 HOURS a day. ha ha

You can do it on the watch before you save the run. I think when you hit stop on the run (assuming you told it it was a dreadmill run) you can then scroll down in the menu and pick "Calibrate & Save" and then edit the run. It is supposed to learn from such calibration to be right next time, but IME without the footpod, it will never really do a great job.2 -

Today I ran the Un-canceled project Commitment Half Marathon. My May half that was postponed was supposed to be next weekend, bu I planned to run today because the weather was supposed to be perfect. And it was. 50°F, no wind, sunny but not hot with a beautiful blue sky. I decided to run out to the lake which is 6.5 miles from my house. It was a really good run. I tried to treat it like an actual race. I took a selfie before I started and a hummingbird came buzzing up behind me. I was hoping that I caught him in the picture, but I didn't. I didn't expect a PR, but I was hoping for a good time. I started out a little fast, but soon settled into a good pace. Most of the run was uneventful but pleasant. The lake is full and looked really pretty and I saw some ducks out there. I even took a picture as I ran by. I did get chased by 2 little dogs about 2 miles from home so I sped up some even though I was getting tired. As I came into the last couple of blocks I was feeling good and I tried to put on a last burst of speed. I ended up stopping my watch at 13.2 miles in 2:17:17. My HM PR is 2:15:17 so I was really excited to do so well in May in a virtual race by myself. My PR was an actual race in February. My next race should be in November if all goes well and I think I will have a good shot at a new PR then. I'm pretty happy with having my 2nd fastest HM today.
When I got home I had a video chat with my daughter and then my husband grilled steaks. My son also called and then this evening I took a hot bath with some bath salts he brought me from an Onsen he visited in Japan. So I had a great run and a great Mother's Day.
I'll have to go back and catch up on the thread. I hope all you moms had a great Mother's Day too!

11/7/20: Run for 57th AHC Half Marathon9 -
I am not going to give up on my 2020 target though without the 7 miles a day to and from work I am dropping further behind. I will stick to the marathon training plan in hope that September's race will happen and at least get decent miles in.
I will stick with your advice on HR @PastorVincent and it turns out my HR is border line Z3/Z4 according MapMyRun so 2 beats per minute less and I would be all Z3.

@robynmac5819 Welcome. I started with C25k when discovered and fell in love with running. Then my middle-aged legs told me after my first half marathon that the didn't like me, and I discovered the Galloway run-walk-run method. It was like a revelation to me, it allows me to continue doing what I love with less pain and injuries and, as I was a slow runner to start with, it hasn't affected my times at all, in fact they're improving!
Finally managed to drag mini-me out of her bunker and get her to come for a quick walk round the block yesterday evening. First time she'd left our apartment since she got home from school on March 13th. She'll spend a week in a panic now in case she caught the C-word. Anxiety is a *kitten*.
I had said I'd go out for a run this morning but when I checked the plan it called for a tempo run and I couldn't be bothered with working pace out, it's too easy to press the buttons on the treadmill. I'll go out for the 5 mile base run on Wednesday. My two outdoor runs last week also made my legs tell me that even if I've continued to run on the treadmill, it's a much softer surface than the sidewalks. So, I'll ease them back into outdoors gradually.
My evil physio messaged me yesterday that the clinic is reopening this week, with strict mask and glove and take your own towel policies, which is good to know but I'm going to try and stay away for a few more weeks. Teaching my husband (whose hands are stronger than mine) to rub the knot in my left calf in the meantime. No doubt that's going to make him think I owe him all sorts of favours (**insert eye-roll emoticon here**)

What model Garmin do you have? I don't think this is an option on the Forerunner 235. It's self-calibrating only.

What model Garmin do you have? I don't think this is an option on the Forerunner 235. It's self-calibrating only.
Oh, my bad. It seemed like such a basic function I thought all the models would have it. Mine is a Forerunner 935. It seems silly that they do not.1 -

I just have the Garmin Forerunner 35, nothing crazy. It’s pretty basic, not fancy at all. When I bought it last year, I mainly bought it because I liked having a watch on my wrist. Maybe I’ll invest in something better for running but that won’t be for a while.
I’ll have to play with it and Garmin Connect and see if it’s possible. Or maybe google the issue.2 -

As for me - so busy, between work and kids. And also just living and enjoying life. I have been posting the bulk of my runs on the fb page because pictures. I felt a lot stronger this past Saturday - I went out for what I planned to be a 10K ONLY and NOT DO MORE because I realized I've just been running all these miles with no cutback weeks or structure - just running to be running and then I was like, "Oh, that's why I'm injuring myself! Duh!"
But then after all the hills, my legs felt AMAZING and i felt like ROCKY BALBOA HIMSELF so I just kept going. A million miles later, I thought, "oh, okay, I'm satisfied now."
I still need to be working on my endurance - on Saturday, I felt so much stronger. SO MUCH - after a week of mostly rest. It was amazing.
This week, the theme for the Uncanceled Project is Dreams, and I'm not sure what to say about all that. We are supposed to post our dreams and go for them - all that. I have everything I want. My "Dream" is to run 100 miles before or at 40. I want to run in Moab.... because I am insane and I will probably die. hahaha!
