@katharmonic – You have come such a long way and keep improving daily! Hope you had a great day to kayak yesterday.
@hamsterwheel6 and @tramboman - Happy Anniversary to you both!
@marisap2010 – nice shirt!
@TheMrWobbly – you have done fantastic! What a transformation!
@kgirlhart – Since you haven’t posted, I’m guessing you are waiting on delivery of your Garmin. I ordered my new one Wednesday of last week and the UPS driver delivered it Friday evening so I got to try it out on Saturday. I don’t have my music set up yet but I love seeing all the other stats.
@rheddmobile – nice photo book of your series
@mbaker – Scooby is so cute!
Welcome to all the newcomers!
On Saturday, I met some friends at 6:00 am for our weekly long run. Varying distances in the group but my goal was 15 miles and I ended up with 15.35 miles. It was humid but stayed overcast for most of the journey around town. Yesterday, I went hiking at Rock Creek Recreational Area. It was only 5 miles round trip but it was so hot and humid. I was soaked with sweat by the time we reached the falls at the top of the trail.Stay hydrated everyone!
We had 4 creek crossings but you could pick your way across on the rocks. Only 1 out of 6 of us fell in!

@quilteryoyo - I meant to congratulate on your longest run! Good job hanging there and getting it done!1

90+ posts, a very active weekend so I'll just congratulate everyone that had a good running weekend and send a hug to everyone that was impacted by heat/curfews/injuries.
I did a virtual marathon relay with my mom and two of my sisters -- we each ran 10.5k. It was fun (but not as fun as a real race!). One of my sisters had scheduling issues so she had to run when it was about 90 degrees. Fortunately, I had a very temperate weekend, but apparently I missed getting sunscreen on part of my shoulder so I have ONE burned shoulder from my Saturday run.

@Teresa502 Nice run and hike. Being so hot an humid, I might have chosen to "fall" into the creek. Thank you!
@janejellyroll Nice (on the run, not the sunburn). Glad you have an active family.2 -
June Goal: 100 Miles
6/2: 6.55 miles
6/3: 7.06 miles
6/4: 6.72 miles
6/7: 10.07 miles
6/8: 7.04 miles
37.44/100 miles completed for June
600.66/1000 miles for Run the Year Team Pavement Pounders
I decided to go ahead and run today even though I would have my Garmin back tomorrow. I just felt a lot better about running at 71°F with 1-3 mph winds than running at 82°F with 10-13 mph winds. So I used Strava to track my run one more time. For the most part it was a good run. The dew point was 64° so that added to 89% humidity wasn't the most comfortable weather. But it was much nicer than I expect it to be tomorrow and if I hadn't been running it would have felt pretty pleasant. And it wasn't unpleasant for June in Texas. I started out a little slow, but since I ran 10 miles yesterday I was taking it pretty easy and I managed to have an average pace of 10:54. I noticed last night that I was 6.38 miles away from my 600 mile bib in RTY so I planned to run 6.4 if I could get out the door with enough time to run that far and get home by 7 to get ready for work. I did a pretty good job, but on my way home I saw a loose dog. It was a big, black lab who came bounding around the corner of a house up the street. I saw him from a good distance away so I turned around and went back a block. Then as I was turning to go the other way I glanced back to see if he was coming my way and I noticed a man walking near him. I'm pretty sure that the man was just out walking his dog off leash. But since I was already going back the other way I thought I would just continue on. Then I saw another loose dog. This one appeared to be a black pit that I saw out a couple of weeks ago. I know the owner and she says he is friendly, but I don't take chances with dogs I don't know personally. Plus, while I think it was her dog, it could have been another dog that just looked similar so I turned again and hoped that if I saw the lab again his owner would keep him in line. I didn't see him though so I was pretty glad about that. The rest of the run was a little stressful because since I didn't have my watch I didn't really know what time it was (unless I dug my phone out of my flipbelt) and since I had detoured I didn't have a good sense of how far I was from home and how long it would take me to get there. I knew exactly where I was, but I just have lots of landmarks on my usual routes where I know how long it takes me to get home when I'm running. But I managed to get home by 7:11 which was a little late (10 minutes is a lot of time for me in the morning getting ready for work). I did have time to do a short yoga practice and got to work not much later than usual. So I ended up running 7 miles this morning which is further than I usually run on weekdays, but I enjoyed the run and I got my 600 mile bib so it was a good start to a Monday morning. And my Garmin is on the UPS truck so I should have it back later today.
@Avidkeo Great news for New Zealand! I really wish I could move there for lots of reasons.
@mbaker566 That's a beautiful place to hike. I hope it helped you through your anniversary week. The new foster is adorable. I love the smile and I also love the look on Old Girl's face. I complain about loose dogs when I'm running. But I really love dogs.
@PastorVincent You need to put a sign on your washer that says "No Headphones!" or "Check Your Pockets".
Welcome @bedazzling07blue , @just_a_few_lbs and @natacosupreme! And congrats on finishing the first day of C25K.
@Teresa502 Those falls are beautiful!

@PastorVincent You need to put a sign on your washer that says "No Headphones!" or "Check Your Pockets".
Sad thing, is I carry them as my BACKUP headphones in my pocket. I have had headphones die with out warning midrun MANY times. So what happens is before I run I stick them in my pocket, and then hours later I dump all my clothes in the wash. Normally I am good about checking pockets, but not recently I guess!
I think I will start carrying the next set in my Wunjo since I have lots of stuff on those pockets and spend several minutes emptying it on wash days.

@TheMrWobbly Wow...so impressed with that transformation after 12 months!!!
@rheddmobile That books is so cool....great way to remember all the races!
@PastorVincent Yikes....maybe you can get a job with them testing and wearing out headphones...a beta tester.

@TheMrWobbly FANTASTIC!!!
@rheddmobile great idea with the book
@PastorVincent – before you wash your clothes throw them in 1 cup of white vinegar in the sink or a tub for 15 to 30 minutes then wash as normal, as in not the 4 day wash cycle you are using now. Zip zip or you can throw a cup into the wash water, but I don’t think it works as well
@mbaker566 great photos, hope Scooby does well, I want to kiss Daisy’s little face!
Okay @Teresa502 your pictures convinced me off to the trails I need to go, it’s been too long

@kgirlhart Yeah for getting your 600 mile bib. Sorry the run was stressful due to loose dogs. I love dogs too, but you can never be too careful.0

Thanks, but that would take about the same amount of time in the end as just letting the washer worry about the whole thing and not using the vinegar. The washer is just set to let the clothes soak in the soapy water for a while. Costs nothing extra and is completely automated. Me remembering to do extra steps (like check pockets for headphones) is not a recipe for success

I ordered new running shorts last week because it was so hot all week, they didn’t come until Sunday and then today it’s 42 out! Haha...oh well I really enjoyed the cooler weather.5 -
So I was 156 posts behind a while ago and then got busy and now I've gotten mostly caught up.
@PastorVincent what is your plan, now? How do you feel about just throwing out the washer and dryer?
I went to the running store on Friday to get some fuel for Saturday's long run and noticed some shoes and then ended up being sold a sticker and some on sale Asics GT 1000s. They said to use them for shorter runs because I overpronate but I used them on 16.70 miles and they were never uncomfortable at all and I don't think I sustained any injuries because of them. I wonder if maybe I don't overpronate as bad as I think? I am wondering because the world of running shoes sure would open up if I didn't buy with such specific needs. This makes my fifth pair in rotation and I should probably stop now.
Saturday - Oh man. I got out way too late. I think I got to the trail around 11 and the heat was already brutal. I drank plenty of creek water and stopped a lot to put water on my arms and neck. Gross, I know, but it's better than dying of thirst. Also, I didn't get sick. So that's something. It was a beautiful run and I'm glad my legs were able at all after last Thursday's hobbling/ sprinting barefoot on the sidewalk with my son. I didn't think I'd be able to run this weekend but I DID!
Then, yesterday, after church - I went and bought a handheld water bottle and some tailwind to mix with water. We'll see how this goes. I think I am basically done telling the universe that it's not the boss of me and I can beat the Sun. Turns out..... I think that might be a boundary God has set for me and I should respect it.
I need to start tapering for two reasons: 1. Healing / Recovery 2. The Summer Binge starts June 27 and today is June 8. I have 19 days to be ready. I feel like I probably am ready now, but it will be much easier to complete/ compete if I am not in so much pain. I want to be able to actually enjoy it. This week I will focus on strengthening the weak parts, bicycling, and shorter distances. This weekend will be a "long" run, but probably on Sunday and it will be a shorter one. Maybe just seven or ten miles or something.
5 -
Oh and @TheMrWobbly YOU ARE DOING SUCH A GREAT JOB! KEEP GOING!0
-
@Camaramandy648 I'm laughing at your comment about the respecting the boundary of the sun . . . mostly because I too have been guilty of thinking that I can power through any type of weather. In Minnesota, I'm more likely to get in trouble in the opposite direction with fantasies that I'm somehow immune to the cold.4

i've had worse situations from the heat than the cold. i can always add more layers

Oh yeah, the heat can be serious in this part of the world too . . . but I meant that I personally am prone to being more unrealistic about the cold than I am about the heat.1 -
Beautiful hiking pictures, @mbaker566 and @Teresa502!
Welcome to all of the newbies!
@PastorVincent, I think you need to install a neon sign above your washer to remind you to check your pockets!2 -
@mbaker566 - I love where you hiked! So beautiful and I hoped it helped get your mind in a different place than your anniversary. I love Daisy - what a sweet face! She looks just so happy and excited to be with you!
@teresa502 - also a great place to hike and I would have been sitting in one of those streams just to cool off!
So while you all are enjoying your heat and humidity we are having heat, wind and no humidity. It is brutally dry - 5-6% humidity and 20mph sustained (hot) winds. Yuck. I went out with Hobbes for a run this morning but we ended up just walking the 4.5 miles. We have agility class tonight. 1st time back after the S@H orders in early March. It was cancelled last weekend because of protest curfews so now we get to enjoy a hot, dry, windy class. Should be fun though as I am pretty sure all the pups are going to be just a bit crazy!7 -
Glory hallelujah curfew is ended! Praying for continued peace, since we still have protests scheduled. But I suspect the pouring rain and possible tornadoes predicted the next two days will do more for crowd control than the National Guard could.11
-
I have lost track a bit, but thank you all so much for your kind comments!
@TheMrWobbly WOW! That is a fantastic one year transformation. I hope you feel amazing about yourself. Great work.
Good job all on your runs and taking care of yourselves in the heat. @shanaber it's hard to relate to your dry heat but that sounds bad too. Stay safe and hydrated all!
@rheddmobile so happy to hear your curfew is lifted. I hope things remain peaceful both with protests and the weather!

I had a fantastic time kayaking yesterday - such a beautiful cooler day. We were on a lake and kind of toured around picking out the lake houses we'd buy. What a nice life that would be to live on the lake and head out in the kayak in the morning. Unfortunately not in the budget but a girl can dream. It was a great change of pace to paddle instead of run or hike for a while.
Today was still reasonable weather-wise and I had an early morning doctor's appointment so I saved the run to the end of the day. Of course I was not really in the mood when that came around, but I stopped at a park in my old neighborhood and did a couple of loops before heading home. Tomorrow and Wednesday will be hot again so I am planning to get the running done early. I made plans with a friend for 7 am tomorrow so I wouldn't back out.6 -

Humid run at 6am. It was overcast and temps were ok, but whenever I stopped for lights I'd be dripping buckets.
It seems that every year I'd be asking myself - how did I survive running last year? And then remember that, d'oh, I ran less and cycled more last year. And the year before. And practically every year since I started running.
Time to get familiar with the bike again.6 -
@avidkeo, an update in the fatigued solei conversation which I thought you might be interested in. Mine are still playing up because I’m still running (what a surprise), anyhoo, I’ve been having having an email conversation with my coach and he writes this: “Flexibility, mobility, technique and strength. From a technique perspective, tomorrow and moving forward, I would love for you to concentrate on trying to lift your leg off the ground using your hamstring, rather than pushing off with the calf muscle. Strength, this will develop over time. Then from a flexibility and mobility perspective I think you are on the right track with daily mobility, yoga etc. In an ideal world I would also suggest a weekly-fortnightly massage or similar. Then it is about training load, if we do too much, or too soon then we'll run (pun intended) into challenges.”6

Very interesting!
Similar to my PT, concentrating on flexibility and strength right now, I imagine this will change on Thursday though.
So I've not run for almost 2 weeks now, and I'm finally pain free today. I did my hop test today and I can hop pain free! I'm still not running till Thursday because I'd rather have an extra 2 days off and be fine, then run too early and irritate it again.
I've been religious about my stretches and strengthening. And I notice the difference!
So my first run should be after my PT session, and I cannot wait!!!
How to you lift through your hamstring? That will be an interesting technique... Have to try that one!8
