Yesterday I logged into my dashboard for my gym membership. I was curious... just trying to see how delusional I really am I suppose. I kept telling myself I go to the gym enough to keep my membership.... Y'all.... in 1.5 years I went to the gym.... 27x. Yes. ONLY 27x. Not cool.
That being said.
I had lost 30 lbs back in 2014-2015 (165 down to 135). I am now back to 165, the difference is I was kidding myself because I am now vegan- so I felt like oh I am healthy...
The truth is, it doesn't matter if I am vegan, I still overeat. I just overeat vegan food... Its a hard reality. I am getting back on this wagon. Here I am. Committed again.
A little sad, but doesn't matter does it. I just have to get my but in gear.14 -

I know exactly how you feel. I keep repeating the last thing you said. I have SO much work to do but I keep reminding myself I did it before, I can do it again. Still feels tough to stomach at times knowing I have this huge mountain to climb - I made it to the top before, yet I pushed myself off !6 -

That five-ish years between attempts made a difference for me, too. I have no clue how I managed to get so much weight off, so quickly when I was 26, and how I managed 5am workouts...4 -

Reading through all your stories it made me fell less alone my fellow re-gainers ヽ(◕◡◕)ノ
I lost and regained 30 kgs/63 lbs, but now I'm starting to keep healthy habits and daily logging again.
These past 3 years have been a struggle of yo-yo dieting, gaining and losing 5 or 10 lbs (probably the same as some of you) until starting to gain steadily the past 7 months. (⊙△⊙)
Now I am losing less aggresively than when I was younger, but so far I have been very happy with my new nutritional plan that allows me to feel satisfied and replenished. It's going to be long and hard to be back in shape (I was ready for a marathon back then, now I can barely run 30 min ლ(´﹏`ლ) lol), but at least thanks to my previous experience I could create a better lifelong plan I can follow.
As other fellow mentioned, don't ever be discouraged, if you managed to do it once you can do it again, and now more smartly. We're going to make it!! (๑˃̵ᴗ˂̵)و6 -

I've done this several times. It is more a mental thing than anything. The previous time I lost 20kgs then gained 10kgs back but caught myself before I gained it all back lost the 10kgs plus 5kgs more. I am now in a good place mentally and emotionally and will not be gaining it all back! It helps to have a good support system in place....for me it's my PT. I also find listening to the podcast Half Size Me really helpful which helps people lose weight for good and keep it off. This is a lifelong thing. You don't just stop once you lose the weight you have to do it for the rest of your life just to be able to maintain. Just letting you know from someone who has lost and gained weight several times it can be done if you change your mindset! Good luck to you all on your journey.6

I lost 50 lbs, through running and strength training, and gained 15 lbs back. I became depressed with a few things going on in my life. I will agree with several of the other posts that it is mental. I lost 5 lbs of the weight but it has been a struggle due to my weightloss revolving around being consistent, taking baby steps (I can't wake up and be the ideal weight I once was), being accountable, and forgiving myself when I fall off the wagon. For me, I acknowledge I am a stress eater. I am learning now to find other things to do, especially during this pandemic, to stay active and not eat to become happy.10

THIS is basically the story of my life. The hardest part I have is focusing on what I can do today and tomorrow that will make a difference. Rather than beating myself up for re-gaining prior losses. Thanks for the thread as it always helps reading others posts and knowing I'm not alone.7

I haven't gained back a bunch, bouncing between 6-8 lbs, but now is the time to get it under control.
I know what happened, I got cocky and started eating things I shouldn't be eating because it was only a few times a week, after all , I had lost 10 under my goal weight without even trying. Boy did that bite me in the backside...
So it's back to what/how I should be eating. I feel better too when I stay on my new "lifestyle" of eating.3 -
I lost 215 pounds over the course of 3 years (reached goal weight in 2013) and maintained for 3 years before I started gaining slowly. I was nearly 70 pounds over my goal weight and decided that enough is enough. When it was 10 or 20 pounds it didn't seem horrible and I felt like I could control it. Wow, was that a crazy way to think! I started working with an nutritional coach, again, to try to get things under control.
Ideally, I'd love to have a life where I didn't need to measure/track things but clearly that doesn't work for me if I also want to be healthy. Perhaps this is just a reality that I need to accept. That, and I need to workout more frequently than once-in-awhile!5 -

I really resonate with this! I am also a bit shaken by how fast things can change. After a chocolate-and-alcohol-free Lent, including going into lockdown, I weighed 81 kg just before Easter. Then I binged on Easter eggs and - voilá - just a few weeks later I was 88.3 kg. It's coming off now (down to 85.1 kg this morning), but I really wish I had started logging at Easter. Then I'd be near my goal weight now instead of 10 kg off.4 -

I relate too. I though after losing weight I though I developped a skill to estimate Cal. it turns out I didn't lol.
Well my fellas after the first two weeks I've lost 1.5 kg/3.3 lbs, I have indulged in some temptations but so far I try to eat healthy till I am full to avoid the cravings.
Don't give up, we can do it!! (◕◡◕)ノ

Oh my, I know how it feels. I lost 50 pounds and have gained it all back. I am struggling to get motivated. I am exercising regularly, but my eating is out of control.4

I have gained and re-lost sooo many times. My Dad who passed away 8 years ago kept tubs of clothes in every size. Same battle... he joined Weight Watchers once and said at the first meeting, “I know how to lose weight. I’ve added it up and I have lost over a thousand pounds over the years. I don’t know how to keep it off.” There only solution was that you can come for free forever at your goal weight.
Anyway... I think I’ve got it this time. My motivation is different and I am pretty dedicated. Actually, here is my main advice for anyone: Get rid of your clothes you shrink out of. Get rid of it! That’s why I’m back this time. My biggest pair of pants were too tight. And now about 3 weeks in they are going in the donate box.7 -
I lost ~40. Slowly put on a couple pounds over a few years but still a healthy weight and confident in that size.
Had 2 children in less than 2 years and am a bit above my original high weight now 6 months postpartum. So back to square 1 looking to lose 40lbs again. Le sigh.

Yes on the weight distribution change! I've been heavy most of my life and it was just kind of all over. 4 years ago I lost 100 lbs and since then have put most of it back on. My face and upper body are definitely thinner than before and my hips are way bigger!0 -
Over here! Me too! I hit my highest weight 5 years ago. The only reason I knew the number was because I got pregnant and had to see a doctor. After I had my son I decided to get healthy and lost 100 lbs through diet and some exercise. I wasn't at goal but felt really good. Then I got pregnant with my second child and started putting on weight which continued even after she was born! I put about 70lbs back on. So I'm 2 months into my current attempt at losing the weight for good!2

I wonder if that's very common for re-gain? I regained about fifty pounds, having gone from 250 to 125 then back
up to 170 and now losing again. It seems like all the weight has shifted downward. I used to be very proportionally heavy, no real area was disproportionately larger than any other area, but now it seems like almost everything is in my legs.

Unfortunately it is normal. Our bodies want to hold on to the weight; it's our default to prepare for times of famine. If any of you guys are interested in the science, I would recommend the book 'Gene eating' by Giles Yeo. He's a geneticist/obesity researcher at Cambridge and I found the book really interesting and 'eye-opening'. It's not dry science but rather amusing! It's not the type of book, that will make you lose weight, I'm a scientist and know all about it, yet I regain and regain - but it did make me think about diets, the food I consume etc.4 -
yep that struggle is real for me. definitely gained quite a bit of weight over this year so far. ugh it sucks; it's turning into bad habits that are becoming harder and harder to break.2

I'm one of those people. Seven years ago, I lost 130 pounds. Instead of keeping up with logging my food, I quit and went back to my old habits. Not only did I gain those 130 pounds back, but I added 11 extra to boot. I'm back at it though. I know if I did it once, I can do it again.14

True. I gained weight while working and going to grad school full time (wanted to get my MSME in 2.5 years). I'm 5'3" and went up to 165 lbs in 2009. I graduated, got engaged, and went down to 136 lbs when we got married in 2012. The next few years, I started to go back up to 164 lbs and then we got pregnant in 2018. My highest was 184 lbs. After giving birth, went down to 164 lbs, but post partum got me up to 172 lbs. I decided to join Noom, since they focus on food psychology and your relationship with food, so now I'm down to 155 lbs. My goal is to reach 140 lbs next March when I turn 41.7

I weighed 270 (at 5'6"). Got down to 195. Then went through some rough times (divorce etc), and went back up to 269. Now I'm working to lose it again. Down 6lbs so far.8

I’m glad to read all of this encouragement! I lost 63lbs in 2018. I was gearing up to do a sprint triathlon in 2019 and in February I got meningitis and almost died. I recovered and was only a couple pounds heavier from having to rest. In April I found out I was pregnant with my second baby. I immediately gained weight where I still couldn’t exercise and move a lot after my earlier sickness. Half way through my pregnancy I got strep in my face (who knew that even happened?!) I went septic and had to be in ICU. They managed to save me and my beautiful baby but I was told I could not push my body at all after that until my pregnancy was finished. I was pregnant, overwhelmed and unable to do any exercise so my eating went off track too. I gained 30 pounds during pregnancy and since then (during quarantine) I’ve continued to gain for a total of 40 pounds. I’m back on track now though. I still have the mental power I gained when I lost in 2018. I know I can do this. The other day I almost got down about it but then I decided I will not be defeated. I know I can sit around and whine or do something to make my life better. So I’m back on it and hoping to feel strong and healthy again soon.13

I actually didn't fall off. I stayed with the program, and exercised harder! What changed? I am reaching menopause. I was taken off my pills, and I couldn't stop the weight, no matter what! My doctor looked at my diet and said, anyone who eats like you would be skinny. so, basically, I always felt like a loser because my body hs never in my life really cooperated. You know when I was finally thin? When I exercised 2 hours a day as hard as I could DAILY! This was 1 hour of fierce cardio, and 1 hour of fierce weights. And after 2 years, I was finally 135 pounds! and I kept it off for 7 years. then...I suddenly got really really tired and I couldn't keep up that routine. Since then I've been trying to find a middle ground. But I can't! and not reaching meno, it's become impossible. I mean, it went up, and it just won't come down. I'm now 172 pounds. I don't overeat, I don't eat bad foods, it's all organic, and low calorie. yeah, there are people like me who, cycled 100 kms a week, at 30 kph, and my heart rate goes up to 170, and stays at that level for an hour, and nope, my weight will NOT come off, and I got everything checked, I have no thyroid problems, not health issues, it's just a stubborn body. anyway, I decided that because I lost 20 pounds on Jenny Craig, I would simulate that except using organic foods. So wish me luck!9
