I was supposed to go hiking with friends yesterday but the weather forecast was for afternoon storms so we cancelled the hike. It was sunny and beautiful when I woke up so I decided to load my bike up and take a ride before the weather moved in. I rode a 23 mile route that I’ve ridden several times before. Traffic wasn’t bad but apparently everyone lets their dogs out early on Sunday mornings to run free. I was chased by several but luckily no biters got me.
This morning I headed out around 6:00 am and ran 5 miles. Rain is in the forecast for most of the day but it wasn’t raining when I got up so I decided to head out while it was nice. It was an uneventful run. I think one guy in a truck passed me during the entire run. Other than that, no human sightings.
@quilteryoyo – I love your driveway! It looks so shady. You’re going to be so strong from running those hills!
@katharmonic – Congrats on your 180-day run streak!
@ContraryMaryMary – Any suggestions on how to engage the glutes more? I tried to focus on using mine this morning but I think they just basically were back there tagging along for the ride.
@PastorVincent – I always enjoy seeing how you deviate from your training plan – lol! Did you have trouble coloring inside the lines as a child?
@mbaker566 – Speed Demon looks so happy out there on the trails. I had to google the word moraine – thanks for expanding my vocabulary! Makes sense it’s called the Ice Age Trail.

@marisap2010 I’m with you on the mask, I don’t think I ever wear one even in the single digits unless the wind is blowing in my face, not that we have a lot of single digits here in Alabama.

Took Champ in a trail run on Saturday, Skip has taken him once before so it's his second time. He does really great, I also took him off the leash to see what he'd do, but WAY too many people and bikes on the easy trail so I was afraid. He loves the deer and squirrels. He's easy to get off the path when a bike is coming and waits nice until other people or bikes go by. He loves it.

I do run in a mask in the winter (on the coldest days), but I don't like it very much. I haven't run in a mask in the summer and I feel like it would be challenging for me.

@Teresa502 Thanks. I do like the shady driveway and running on the hills makes me wonder what I could do on a flat route. I'm glad you didn't get bitten. I love dogs, but not ones that chase me acting like they are going to bite. My neighbor has one that used to love me. She had puppies that they gave away about the time I changed cars. I don't know if that is it or not, but she now seems to hate me and has even nipped at me when I go to visit. She hasn't been over there the last few times I've gone - stays at a neighbor's house most of the time. I usually call before I visit and ask if Cujo is there. LOL

I made sure to start week 2 of my plan today and added another almost 2 miles to my total

@marisap2010 I will not run in a mask. I run alone. Completely away from other human life, unless they’re passing me. I have asthma and running in the heat with a mask + my glasses? No thanks. I can’t imagine how you were able to manage, but good for you! I can run in a mask in the cold, which actually was amazing during the summer months – but that’s a Buff, not a surgical or N95 mask.

@janejellyroll did you get the shoes? I am up to five pairs and I really must stop now. Every running item that I buy – I calculate – how many hours do I have to work to get this and is it worth it… .That usually keeps me in check. To a degree, anyway. 😉

I hit my 700 miles for 2020 yesterday! I’m actually at 706 point something, but who’s counting. 😊 Also, I LOVE the handheld water bottle. I ran two long runs this weekend, consecutively. I want to be more consistent about the days I run because I think part of the reason, aside from weaker glutes and core (pfft whatever), that I am constantly in pain or suffering or healing from an injury – is that I pound out most of my miles on the weekends. During the week it seems I can only manage 2 or 3 per day and they aren’t all running miles. So Saturday I went out for a 10K and then planned to do a 15K on Sunday after church and serving but that turned into a HM. Yesterday’s run was very, very difficult but I credit that to not fueling well enough on Saturday after the 10K as well as lifting heaving for a long time Saturday evening – my legs were so sore, but it was mostly muscle soreness – not injury pain. So that’s something. I need to decide what I am doing for mileage this week – the summer binge starts on the 27th. I need to be doing something this week, but I also need to be healing. The Summer Binge runs from 6/27 to 07/07 and it is supposed to be a cumulative 110 miles. I emailed the race director and she said it doesn’t matter what days I do the long runs on, which means I can do the shorter miles through the week and the long ones on the weekends, however I choose. I need to sit down with a calendar and figure out exactly what my plan is. It’s going to be rough and I’m starting to wonder what the heck I was thinking.
Decided to start logging food again, also. I haven’t been because I have been putting in so many miles but then I considered this morning, it might make an actual difference if I paid more attention to what nutrients I am lacking…. Which would hugely impact recovery…. I’m going to have to weigh all the ingredients in the smoothies I have been making so that I can log them accurately. That’s going to be annoying.
Anyway, I think I’ve caught up on all the reading and all of your journeys and I AM SO PROUD of all of you!

Thanks everyone for birthday wishes, I had a great day! We got up super early and had a picnic at the park before anyone else got there. Not that too many people know about our little park anyway. We sat near a birdhouse and were wondering what kind of birds lived in it when they came home - bluebirds! My friend at the gyro shop made a little kanafeh cake just for us, which is basically shredded philo dough around a fluffy cheesecake baked golden brown. Normally it’s then drizzled with sugary syrup, but he left the syrup off because I’m a diabetic. It was delicious!
Every year I set goals at Christmas and on my birthday. I did not make my six month goals this year. One of them was to revive my running mojo since I was feeling a little bored with running. Well, that went well... these days I consider it a victory just to put one foot in front of the other! Looking back at my goals from December 2019 I feel like, Oh you sweet summer child... you have no idea what 2020 has in store for you... but nevertheless I made it to another birthday, my blood glucose is under control, I am within 5 lbs of my goal weight, still running, still lifting... new goal: hang in there until Christmas.
Race report for Monday: this was the 2 week midpoint of the timed mile challenge, in which the point is to improve mile time for one timed mile, tested three times over a month. Honestly as much as my knee has been giving me fits, I was concerned my mile time would be getting worse, not better. We have had to cut back on both mileage and intensity to add extra rest. But my baseline mile two weeks ago was 8:38 and today’s mile was 8:24. I’ll take it!
The weather first thing in the mornings has been beautiful, although it gets hot by 9 am. Today we were under a bad air quality warning, which I didn’t read about until after we finished. So what seemed like perfect running conditions wasn’t, exactly, which explains why it seemed like my body was working extra hard. After finishing our mile we fartleked another three miles.
Picnic photos! That is a tomato sandwich with Duke’s mayonnaise, and Gus’s world famous fried chicken.

Looks like you had the number candles out of order. 25 looks more appropriate.

@Camaramandy648 I think I'm going to order the shoes as a treat for myself after my virtual marathon this weekend. I too make myself calculate how much I've spent on running stuff. I'm not one to spend a lot of money on clothes . . . unless those clothes are for running. Now I just remind myself that I've got plenty of stuff and try to only get it if it's meeting a genuine need and I don't already have one (like my hydration vest). I'm not perfect at it, but it helps!4

I ran 5 miles this morning. Set off slightly earlier and it was much less stressful to know I had a bit of time free to recover when I got home before work. Right quad still twingy. I was really aware of trying to land really carefully on that foot, so I was a bit slower at around the 10:30 m/m mark.

Morning all.
Been reading and following along mostly.
Just been walking and trying to cross train. It's a busy week at work atm, I had Thursday off, and am working through till following Thursday, and having a 3 day weekend which will include a kids birthday party for miss 4 and 6. This means CAKE! Hehe.
@Camaramandy648 calf seems to be getting better, no pain the last few days, and I'm being good waiting till tomorrow before I attempt any running. I can't wait! I did the hop test today while out on my walk this morning, no pain niggles or altered sensation in any way! So I'm feeling positive!5 -

@Avidkeo my sister was asking me last night about running and things I'm happy with and things I wish I had done differently - you came to mind as I was telling her, "LISTEN TO YOUR BODY, DO NOT DO WHAT I DO." You're doing so well letting yourself heal and I wish I were more like that.
I think this weekend I may just do a 15K. The Summer Binge is next week. Maybe I should even just do a 10K and then some shorter distances through the week. I'm not in a ton of pain today, but I can feel both IT bands want to start nudging me. Maybe focus on recovery, strengthening, and short distances for a week so I don't DIE during the binge. Surely somebody here is smarter than me and has had to figure out something similar - right? What do you all think?2 -

Hoping to get a couple of runs in this week....We have had pretty great weather for June. I'm coping with OCD on the dang bike that goes no where. Trying to finish this series of "tours" by end of June and I am behind so riding 2+ hours 4 days a week. Running is now my recovery day which is weird and silly. Look forward to getting back into it and working on improving.2 -

The easiest thing is to activate them before your run - I will do a few Pilates exercises like clamshells and bridges to get them firing then head out. They’re super lazy so this will turn them on. Literally five minutes worth, just Until you feel a burn then you’re good to go.5 -

I did a little trail running myself today. The park where we usually do the dreaded stairs with the weighted vest also has very pretty but mostly challenging technical trails. Lots of rocks. I did the easiest parts but had to do some of the more challenging ones too to get any mileage in. It was slow and one of the hard parts was the sun in the late afternoon creating all theses spots of light on the trail made it really hard to see where the roots and rocks were (everywhere). It was not an easy run but I really enjoyed keeping my head in the game and being focused on the nature around me.

Lesson learnt. A month in to working as a landscape gardener and I have put on another 8 pounds. It turns out feeling cream crackered at the end of a tough day working does no good if you stop tracking your food and eat crap and don't do any running. That is a full stone on since lockdown began. TIme to switch MFP back on!10

But most of us DO run in a mask, in the cold months. What would kill me is how hot it would be on in the summer! I mean in 20F I have to pull the mask down to cool off a bit, never mind 90F!!!!
Yeah, I don’t think I would care as much in the winter! Even in my gym, the track runs partially over the heated pool, so it can get quite warm. It was hot, wet with sweat, and stuck to my face, which is not helpful for breathing. 😓
Running outside is way safer in this pandemic than any indoor activity really so go for it Just remember sun screen!
I do 95% of my running outside, but if I am going to the gym to do other workouts, I’d rather get it all done in one place. I only weight train a couple of times per week, so outside it is!

It rained last night, and the temp dropped to 67F, so I got out about 8pm and got in 2 miles. It was nice to run when it was a bit cooler.
Tonight, my body pump class starts back! I am so...pumped. 🤣4 -

I wouldn't reach my original goal of 90 kms because I got really tired barely running 3km, I have to slowly get in shape and don't rush things so I'll be reducing my goal to 75 kms / 46.6 miles.
I have been running 3km almost daily with just one rest day a week and I have also been walking at least 2km everyday and I'm really happy with how active I have become.
I see that you guys run a lot more than me and that's really inspiring! Keep being amazing!!

Sunny, mid 50s F and very little breeze. Started out full of niggles again; why is it always like that after a rest day?
Then it came to me -- it's a golf/rest day. I think the niggles are the result of the torque put on my back, hips, knees, and ankles from the golf swing. Fortunately, it's not bad - just annoying.
