Happy July!
I'm hopping in on this, because although I've done pretty well the past 2 1/2 months without posting, or really even reading any forum stuff, I think it will help me to engage some online, and build a little bit of an accountability community.
I started this whole weight loss journey in late March, and it was because of covid. I saw up close and personal how much of an increased risk factor it was to be overweight and in poor cardiovascular health, and it scared the crap out of me. So. Here I am.
I didn't weigh myself initially, because I started off pretty slow- wasn't even tracking calories or logging food at first, because I didn't want to overwhelm myself right off the bat.
So my start weight is technically from my last physical like a year ago, though if anything I think I'd probably gained a little more since then.
I'm 28 years old and 5'8"
Highest weight (April 23) - 252 lbs
Current weight (June 25) - 227.9 lbs
Current amount lost - 24.1 lbs
End of July goal weight - 220 lbs
ultimate goal weight - 160ish? this one's kinda up in the air. I've never been a "healthy" weight as an adult, so I honestly have no idea what I'll look/feel like once I get around this size.
Other, non-scale July goals
- run a 5k without a walk break (I'm so close! I blame this one a little bit on the heat, as I live in Southern Louisiana and it's been hot as hades lately)
- work out or run 5 times a week
- walk the dog at least 20 min every day he doesn't go to doggy daycare
- start on my 10k training
- eat meat only 15 days out of the entire month. (not including seafood or dairy)
- eat completely vegan 5 days out of the entire month.
- only buy pre-made/takeout/delivery food 8 times in the month. this includes buying food from the cafeteria at work.

I'm 42, going on 43, and my mom still likes to set up my apartment when I move!!!! This time she actually built IKEA furniture, a new experience for her as an antique dealer. :-) It's also very exciting that your daughter got a job already. Way to go!

Today is recommitment day. Should have been yesterday but it was a holiday so we pushed to today: (almost) exactly halfway through 2020, the beginning of the downhill slope to the end, now is the time to gain momentum!
As for me: 100 calories for after dinner snacks/candy per day, period. No more excuses, no more "it's only an extra 20 calories."
No more alcohol until Christmas. I actually thought I was gonna die yesterday, I guess I lost 90 pounds of pure alcohol tolerance.
Less bread, at least until I determine if the bread is hurting my stomach. Maybe I'll pick up sourdough again.
Less take out. I love Pho Friday, but its dangerous: cheap, plentiful, loaded with salt. Hard on my increasingly sensitive stomach (thanks, genetics.)
More personal projects and less laziness. I need to work on my mental health and that means picking up my old projects: that book I was writing and my language learning efforts.
Anyone else doing mid-year resolutions?9 -
Hey everyone I just found this group and the energy is amazing!!!

I have soooo far to go and Tbh I'm not positive where to begin. I've lost a little weight just from trying to make better choices. I have good days where I never go over my calories and I'm on point Whig makes me feel so good. Though I do suffer from anxiety and depression, which tends to give me excuses to mess up. I've probably gained some of the weight back the past week since I quit my job bc I thought I had a job lined up and then it fell through. So I've been down bc I don't do well without a job. Also on top of that my knew, which I injured last year has started to act up again. I tried Thrive for a few days and then had to stop once I noticed it was causing me to swell really really bad and is what caused my knee to swell and start to hurt me very badly. Ever since then my knee continues to hurt me which is causing me issues bc Idk what I can do for exercise. I definitely can't do squats or anything like that. I can walk alright but after a while it becomes very painful.
But I will figure out something and I know I will make it through this, I'm just overthinking it.
My main goal for July is to be consistent and remember why I am doing this, which is ultimately for my health and my happiness.
Hope everyone has a great day!!

So, I wasn't able to get back on yesterday and comment on all the posts I missed. Really did get super behind. Comments for Page 1 posts are almost done. Taking a break to get some of my daily tasks done and will do the posts on pages 2 & 3 later this afternoon. WHEW!!
@RavenStCloud Thank you for initiating our new July thread. It's become an important step in my daily routine. I'm also targeting a two lb / week loss as my July goal. May we both succeed!!
@CupcakeCrusoe going into lockdown in early March was a shock. I knew I'd be in trouble and would be binge eating my way through the whole thing. So, I joined MFP to counter that. The last 4 months have been unbelievably stressful; if I wasn't truly engaged with MFP, I'd probably have gained 10 lbs each of the last 4 months.
@orangequilt looks like good goals; you can DO this!
@Terytha I really like your name! Would you spell it phonically so I know how it's pronounced, please? I checked your diary and, you're right ... carbs, sugars, sodium ... all need to be more carefully planned. One question, I'm not seeing any fruit. Fresh fruit is marvelous right now. Could you substitute a fruit for one of your sugary snacks? Might help. My other question: I did not see any water logged. Are you drinking enough water? If not, your body will hoard everything. Because of the roller coaster I've been on the last 4 months, I decided that for me to get back on track means a need to get back to basics: weigh and measure everything that passes over my lips, drink at least 10 glasses of water a day, and get my exercise back on track. log everything. I know we're in the same storm; just different boats. But, someday I felt like my boat was sinking. Hang In There!! We CAN do this!!
@Kelceybyers I know, right? at best, my wagon has really wobbly wheels. LOL Personally not enamored with the gym, but sure would like to go to the pool to swim, or join an aquarobics class. Unfortunately, none of ours have opened yet. <sigh> maybe soon.
@wanderinglight looks like a couple of really good goals.
@pamiede WoW!! You are so close. Hang in There!! Your persistence has paid off thus far; keep the momentum going!
@KeriA I know that feeling! I know I had a 5-6 lb gain in June (a really sucky month!) but lost it all. So, my ending weight for May and ending weight for June are exactly the same. I think I'll call that a Win in my book!! LOL
@speyerj I really believe positive affirmations can help us get through the day. I put sticky notes on my bathroom mirror so it's what I see first thing in the morning. a few examples: (1) I am eating foods that contributes to my health and wellbeing (2) I am in control of how much I eat. and (3) I am happily exercising every morning when I wake up so that I can reach the weight loss that I have been wanting. [ OK, happily exercising might be stretching it a little. LOL ]
@AshleyBK0620 Welcome!! Creating a calorie deficit every day is the only way to lose weight. The food you eat and the water you drink are the keys to making it happen. You've Got This!!
@AlexandraFindsHerself1971 getting out of one house and getting into another is super stressful. When you have something like that happening, it's all consuming. I believe in you ... you'll get through this and be stronger for it!!
@crystalsan726 Great goals ... should set you up nicely for a successful month!!
@planktonbye well, at least you wake up with good music in your head ... mine is usually something from old kid's tv programs <grins & giggles>
@ChrysalisCove Sounds like a fun and interesting month ahead for you. Would you explain, please, the "rings" you've listed. If you've done so before, I missed it. tx!
@elainey13 Your goals should really help you this month. You might want to include one for drinking water; it's equally critical. Good planning!!
@aliciap0116 When you joined, did you fill in your body measurements? Sometimes that's a nice non-scale win as well.
@AgnesFerniot Good Luck! Hope you are blessed with a marvelous month!
@jm216 Big Congrats on your June loss! Wonderful! I am trying to add more veggies on a daily basis. It's getting easier now that fresh produce in coming into the Farmer's Market. But, I like your choice for Low sodium V8 Juice. I think I'll go add it to my next grocery delivery list. Thanks!

@cesse47 My username has followed me since I auto-generated it from an Elf Name Generator when I was 13. True story. XD
I'm not sure how it's meant to be said either, though I usually think of it as tair-IH-thah.
I can't eat fruit. I seem to have some sugar absorption issue, anything more than a small amount leaves me in a lot of pain. I had a thing of raspberries the other day and I'm still regretting it.
I am drinking water though! I usually don't log it because I can't access my phone easily at work. But I drink around 1-2 liters most days.7 -

July Goals:
🌺 Use vacation in July to RELAX
🌺 Get below 200 (I think I can, I think I can)
🌺 Do some sprints 1-2 per week
🌺 Read 5 books
Weighed in today since I would really like to take a computer/phone break for the holiday weekend. Although my weight loss slowed some in June, I felt good and continued with my running. It is super HOT in Texas now so I am drenched from my morning workouts at 6:00 am. I go on vacation next week and I really want to dedicate myself to checking out. I am not taking my work laptop with me and am taking work email off my phone. I want to relax and I need to relax.
@sweetirish AHHH! Such wonderful news! Congratulations.

@speyerj I am sooo inspired by your success. Congrats on reaching maintenance. I’ve no doubt you have the skills to maintain❣️
@sweetirish Congratulations❣️
@brownsugar174 I’m anticipating a calorie intake of between 1500-1900 to maintain my goal weigh (160 lbs).5 -
@Terytha have you heard of low fodmap foods? They're foods that are sorted by their type of carbohydrates. The hard to absorb ones are on the avoid list like apples, broccoli, beer and bread. I was following it for a while, because I started having bad reactions to some fruits and vegetables, and used it as a rough guide until I figured out what my stomach could process.7

July goals - continue healthy eating, adding small weights to my arm exercises and more walking. Increasing water intake and following my nutritionist's pregnancy guidelines from my previous attempt.
Thank you to everyone who wished us luck last month. Sincerely.
Oh My Stars!!! I am so excited for you!! 🤰 Congrats! Healthy eating, sufficient water, and healthy exercise are even more important now! Just think, you have "built in" motivation ... LOL 🤭4 -

Yeah but after a few months of elimination diet and low FODMAP research all I figured out was I can't do any fruit and I can eat chicken and rice. Sometimes my stomach problems flare again eating things that were OK two weeks ago and I don't know why.
I don't want to eat just chicken and rice forever.8 -
Why hello there everyone. It's July! Aaaah. So far, since starting my weight loss journey (again) in November, I've taken two steps forward, and then two steps backward. Now I'm sitting right about where I started. Sigh. In June I diligently logged about half the time, and exercised 4-5x a week, and I gained two pounds. I've been handling my covid stress by eating and drinking, and it shows on the scale- although I continue to rock the exercise thing. Exercise has always been my jam. I love it. If I don't exercise, I don't feel normal. So, that's good. I suppose if that wasn't the case, I would have gained a lot more.
This month, I have decided to add in more strength training to my workouts. I've always been one of those cardio heavy exercisers because heart disease runs in my family and I always felt as if cardio was important. Also, I feel like if I'm not out of breath with a pounding heart, that I'm not getting any exercise, even though I know that's not necessarily true. But I do know the many benefits of strength training and I'm hopeful adding more in will shake things up a bit.
I'm also trying to focus on my macros more. I'm not a total anti-carb person, but I think adding in some more protein might help me.
Glad to be here with you all! I'm going to weigh in for July tomorrow.

@Terytha Nice idea mid-year resolutions.
@ButtercuptaterOG I am all for exercise but don’t let it keep you from losing weight. You do not have to exercise to lose. I have knee issues too. You can do exercise in small intervals throughout the day. Any little bit helps and the more little bits the better.
@wholebygrace have a great vacation
@cesse47 I saw a post you made on a thread of a new member who needs to lose 100 pounds and took notes since I have to be careful with my knee and even my feet have been hurting when on my Gazelle. If above ground pools were deep enough for aquafit I would have gotten one by now. I miss Aquafit so much!
@pamiede you are such an inspiration. You figured out what works for you and stuck with it.
Last month I mentioned I needed to do some work on my spreadsheet because I wanted to learn from when I lost. I added some formulas in and looked at the weeks I lost. My average daily calories were between 1000 to 1400. I lowered my calorie goal on MFP and also recalculated my BMR and TDEE for my current weight on my spreadsheet. However 1400 is lower than my estimated BMR so I didn’t lower my calorie goal all the way to 1400. Since I don’t usually eat all of my exercise calories that should adjust for that somewhat. However if I start to up my exercise I will need to reevaluate this so I don’t put my body into starvation mode.
I am going to go shopping for the 4th today. I will determine if/how much I need to do some exercise as well after I get back.10 -
@pamiede That is awesome! I’m gonna try lowering my daily calories from 1,900 to 1,600. I’ve been having a smoothie in the morning which has been awesome! The protein in the smoothie (from the Greek yogurt, almond butter or Wella Bar) has done a great job of reducing my appetite! I add some matcha powder, chia seeds and berries and I’m good to go. The last two days I’ve done the smoothies I’ve not been hungry at lunch. I need to honor that reduced appetite. If I get a little hungry before dinner a small healthy snack and/or bottle of water will do the job. It’s all a work in progress🙏🏽6

@ChrysalisCove Sounds like a fun and interesting month ahead for you. Would you explain, please, the "rings" you've listed. If you've done so before, I missed it. tx!
The Apple Watch has the ability to track your activity, & monitors your progress throughout the day via “rings”. It monitors 3 different types of movement, so there are 3 different rings: Stand, Move, & Exercise. A full ring means you met your goal for the day in that category.4 -

Thanks! Sounds like a nice tool to have.2 -

I was disappointed not to see pools opening ... and doesn't look like any time soon for opening either. At this weight and with compromised lungs, it's so much easier to do a pool workout. Plus, I do love to swim. Then, as I look back at the last 4 months, I realized I wouldn't have had time to go to the pool anyway. Oh Well, will keep my fingers crossed that they'll open back up by Fall.
Have a great 4th!! 🗽5 -
No fair our Y isn't open yet! Even when it does I don't think they will have aquafit . They will open in Phase 3 with small classes and reservations for them and swimming lanes. All the best with the painting etc.[/quote]
We're at 4.5, here in Indiana, but this county (Has the capital city in it) has mandated masks indoors now. Not that that changes anything I'm doing, but.
I started with ten rooms to paint, and have four done. However, two of them are going to get one more coat of paint and be done tomorrow, and one of the remaining is the room that they are taking the extra closet out of, so I may not get to that immediately. It's about half done, but of course once they're done mudding and taping and putting on the chair-rail, it will be up to me to finish the painting. And some of these rooms had navy-blue paint on the walls, and that took three coats of thick paint to put to a nice pale tan. (Or, in my sister's room, a very pale gray-shaded lavender) We have to lift the toilet in the upstairs bathroom to finish behind it, and since I don't get on ladders when I am alone in the house, I couldn't finish the brushwork for the top margin of it either. But once we do get it lifted, we'll get it done fast, dried, second coat on, brushwork done, dried, and toilet back in place by the end of the day. I've done enough home repair that I'm not afraid of lifting a toilet any more.
I don't think I'm eating past my calories; I stop and eat lunch when I'm truly hungry, and I come home and eat a dinner that I know meets my calorie budget. We've had a lot of stuff this week that is "Put the casserole sitting out to thaw in the oven at 4 pm, and we'll eat when I get home about 5:30". Tonight was swiss steak. Yesterday was roast chicken with dressing and green beans. (Cause steaming green beans is quick.) I am working insanely hard and on my feet most of the day, and boy are my feet complaining.

As a native San Antonian (and a Sarah too), I salute you both for working out! No one can understand why I hate the heat if I'm from a hot place. My friend, it is BECAUSE I'm from there that I hate it! Sometimes while living in NYC I would get a Dominican cabdriver who also hated the heat...we spoke the same language :-)
