September Goal: 100 Miles
9/1: 6.22 miles
9/2: 5.05 miles
11.27/100 miles completed for September
956.50/1000 miles for Run the Year Team Pavement Pounders
Today's run was so much better than yesterday's run. Yesterday it was 84°F feels like 92°F when I got up at 5:00 am. Today it was only 72°F, but it was raining and thundering and lightening when I got up at 5:00. I thought I might not get to run, but when I looked at the radar it looked like the storm would be past by 7:00. So instead of running and then doing a 20-30 minute yoga to stretch, I decided to do some yoga and then if it wasn't lightening at 7:00 I could run then. So I drank my coffee and got dressed and did about 50 minutes of yoga. I tried to pick a dynamic flow since I was doing it first and I wanted more movement and less stretching. It seemed to be a good choice. There wasn't any lightening nearby at 7:00 and it was raining, but a gentle rain so I went on out. I figured I had about 45-50 minutes. I usually run for about 1 hr to 1:10, but I thought a short run would be better than no run and there are more storms predicted for later today. It was about 72° and it was pretty humid, but since it was raining it didn't feel too bad. I started out and realized that I was running pretty fast for me. Yesterday I ran a 10K in 1:11. My average pace was 11:25. Today I ran 5 miles in 48:37 with an average pace of 9:38. So the difference in feels like 92° and feels like 72° was really noticeable. Yesterday I was just glad to get my run done. Today I really enjoyed the run. I'm so glad I got a run in between the storms. If I hadn't I would have been in a bad mood all day. I'm not usually a fan of rainy weather, but we really need rain. And since I ran this morning I'm enjoying the rain instead of griping about it. We actually have gotten 2.75 inches so far since yesterday afternoon. I think tomorrow morning will be similar to this morning. I hope that I will be able to have a window to run, but if I don't I will try not to let it make me cranky.
So all in all it was a good morning. I had a great run with a fast (for me) pace. I actually got the first 5K in less than 30 minutes which usually only happens in races for me. And I got into headstand this morning in yoga. Not for very long, but I got both feet up. 😁
2020 races:
11/7/20: Run for 57th AHC Half Marathon7 -
Following the noxgear conversation with interest @Teresa502 and @shanaber - yesterday was my first run starting in the dark since around April, and i found it a little scary. I know I’ll get used to it soon but the first ones of the season are always an adjustment. I would really help myself by having a light and maybe some form of self defence, rather than just trying to stay close to streetlights and hoping for the best!!
After my practice yesterday, today I did my first running commute from child drop-off to work. It’s not very far and mostly downhill so pretty fast. I’m driving in tomorrow and plan to bring a selection of clothes, shoes and food/snacks so I don’t have to bring anything with me on running mornings.
@Camaramandy648 - you are just amazing! @kgirlhart - glad you got the run, dodged the storm and smashed the time!
@hanlonsk - hope the injury has healed.
@Tramboman - good retro song to have as the soundtrack to your run!
September total: 9m
September goal: 100m

9/2 - 2.25mi!
Pushed it an extra .25mi today just to get closer and closer to my first 5k since starting back up. It's amazing how great my legs feel after getting back into regular running! Quick question for all you seasoned runners: since I'm just getting back into it after a few years hiatus (I had an occasional run here and there over the past 3 years but nothing regular), how many rest days do you think I should take a week? Right now I'm definitely doing MWF runs, but I may want to do a run tomorrow night too. I just dont want to work too hard or injure myself if that is a possibility from not allowing my body enough recovery time?
2.25/30mi for September4 -
@Teresa502 Love the cheerleaders. Good for you for doing 5 miles in those conditions!
@kgirlhart Yeah for the nice run today. Great pace! Hopefully, tomorrow will be just as good for you.
@kristinajeang You are doing great. As for rest days, I'm not sure I'm the best person to answer that question. I consider myself sort of new at running too. I would take at least one total rest day and maybe do some cross training one or two days. Are you following a plan of some sort? Most of those will have rest days planned in. Also, be sure to take a cut back week every 3 or 4 weeks. Lowering the mileage ran a little will give your muscles time to heal and you'll be able to do more the next week. Anyway, that's my 2 cents, for what it is worth. Others on here can probably give you better advice.
I played doubles tennis this morning for cross training. I thought about coming home and doing a short run too, but it was hot and humid. Tennis was enough for the day.6 -
@kristinajeang if you google you will probably see 3 or 4 times a week alternating days - 20 to 30 minutes each run. Listen to your body and don't add miles too quickly to avoid injury.7
-
9/1 – 7.01 miles
9/2 – 5.03 miles
Goal – 130 miles
It was so oppressive out this morning. I was sweating before I got to the end of my driveway. Enough said.@shanaber – thanks for the Noxgear recommendation. I will check them out. For some reason, I always thought they were more for being visible rather than providing light to see.
My cheerleaders.
Ouch @hanlonsk – I hope your finger heals quickly. Thanks for your light recommendation. If I see one like it I will check it out.
I also have a noxgear and love it. I hated the idea of a bouncing headlamp, though won one in a recent competition - haven't been able to try it yet (4 weeks!!)3 -
Sept total: 3.5/60 miles
9/2: 3.5 miles
I'm not really training for anything specific right now. Usually my fall would have a few races but virtual races just don't really do it for me and even if I could find an in-person one, I wouldn't feel safe doing it. The next potential race on my calendar is the Houston HM in January, which I signed up for a year in advance. I guess we will see how Houston and racing in general is doing with coronavirus in January.
Without something to train for, I was struggling to find motivation. Especially when combined with running outside in Houston in the summer. So, I started a new training program through Runcoach. So far, I like it. Novelty goes a long way with me and just having a plan is usually enough to make me stick to it.
My main accomplishment this summer has been actually continuing to run outside and embracing running in just a sports bra! I overheat so easily and in the summer I have historically done longer runs on the treadmill in the AC, but that wasn't an option this year. So, I pep talked myself into ditching my shirt and it made a HUGE difference in my comfort level. I will never go so far as to say I am comfortable without my shirt or with the temperature, but sprinklers and a slight breeze on bare skin is almost as good as a blast of AC!9 -
So many posts, and so behind.
Did want to do say @brittanystebbins95 Congrats!! Finnegan is beautiful!
@kgirlhart Your weight loss is impressive! I can't even picture you any other way. And today's run was fab!
Hugs and high fives to everyone here and to the newcomers, welcome.
7 ish miles today on the treadmill because 100% Humidity with dew point in the 70's.

@martaindale I still have not made it to comfort without a shirt! I have adorable, supportive sports bras that I got with the intention of wearing them without a shirt and then I get ready to go and I'm like, "Nope! Nobody needs to see my goods!" It would be so much more comfortable, though!
Maybe this weekend i'll be brave like you.
@avidkeo, I remember when you got your vest! I still haven't bought one - or a lamp - and I need to.
@Faebert I am truly considering running with a gun. There are holsters made for this. On my long run last weekend, I came across a transient that was very clearly tweaked out of his mind. Took his picture and sent it along with my location to my two closest friends. Thought nothing of it after that - I ended up getting two photos.
But then, on the trail, I was running south and he was hiking up the side of the bluff, heading east. If we met, it'd have been a 90 degree angle. Ran my fastest mile and realized mace is not sufficient in battle. I need to be prepared to be on the winning side of things. I haven't made the jump yet because I'm still very seriously concerned about my daughter around guns. I'd have to strategize how to keep her safe. She is NOT of the maturity level to respect guns. I've found this out in the two instances this summer that i exposed her to them. A gun in the house around her is a horrible, horrible idea. To her, they are a joke. Seriously. She doesn't get it. Gun safety and the fact that they can take a person's life do not compute for her.... I digress. Autism is great....
Anyway, @Faebert yes. You should do more than hope for the best if you are able. And thank you! I Think you are so amazing, as well!
@Teresa502 YOU'RE KILLING IT!
@skippygirlsmom My sister said that if I become a dual citizen, then my kids can too, which would open up so many opportunities for them in terms of education, job prospects, travel, healthcare, etc. I could literally give them the world? What a gift!5 -
Thanks @hamsterwheel6 !
@teresa502 I have a noxgear vest and I love it. I do think that they are designed more to help you be seen than to help you see. I usually stick to well lit areas when I run in the dark. But it does help me see where I am going and I feel much safer wearing it. I think that a clip light like @Scott6255 or @hanlonsk has would pair well with the noxgear.
@kristinajeang I don't know if I'm a seasoned runner. I've only been running for 4 years. I definitely think that rest days are important. When I started running I used a C25K app (which was 3 days per week) and after I finished it I probably ran for another 6 months and then I added in a 4th day of running. I could probably run 5 days a week now, but 4 fits my schedule better. I would say just don't try to rush it, but if you feel comfortable adding an extra day then it would be fine. Just remember that you do need to give your body time for recovery. But a rest day doesn't have to mean you do nothing. You can still walk or bike or like @quilteryoyo play tennis.
@martaindale I sometimes wish I had the courage to run in my bra. The Texas heat is so awful sometimes (and Houston is more humid than where I am.) But I live in a very small town, and the last thing I need is to have people coming up to me in Walmart or the bank saying "I can't believe I saw you running in your underwear." Even if I felt comfortable doing it, I could never do it here.5 -
I've only run one time in sports bra only. It was the Sports Bra Squad day and I was with three or four other friends. And it was really early on a Sunday morning when few people were out! If this link works, it tells you about the day and gives some inspiring stories: https://womensrunning.com/culture/sportsbrasquad-day/
As far as the safety conversation, some mornings when I'm by myself I run with my pepper spray blaster. I'm so clumsy that I would probably accidentally shoot myself with a gun.4 -

I started following Kelly Roberts on IG not too long ago (the author of the article linked above)! I find her irreverent take on running reassuring and her come as you are mentality very helpful. In general, I think her approach to running/health/weight is just great! An often repeated phrase is "Health is not a look. It's a lifestyle." She was certainly one major reason I worked up the guts to ditch the shirt this summer. So, I know it's silly to care what some random person I don't even know thinks of how I look while I am running several miles in heat indexes over 100F, but those were exactly the thoughts that held me back. Never in my life have I exercised in just a sports bra before this summer. I'm turning 40 in a couple of days and I've always worried too much about what other people think of my body. It's been liberating, honestly. It actually does make me feel more powerful and more confident.
And not a single person has said anything to me or about me (at least within earshot!). If they thought it, they kept it to themselves and that's fine by me! I'll get off my soapbox now.
Anyway, for IG users, she is worth a follow and your area may have a BadAssLadyGang to follow as well. Some of the chapters are more active that others but it seems like they could be a good option for people who want to find a running buddy for safety reasons or just some company.4 -
@martaindale That's awesome! Thank you for the insight and suggestions! Agree 100%. health is about my LIFE, not what I look like...
@Teresa502 I share this concern as well. Last night, as I was falling asleep, I was imagining running with a gun and shooting myself in the stomach somehow on accident. Or the leg. Or the toe....
Anxiety is a real *kitten*.4 -
I never thought I'd like a bouncing head lamp but honestly I don't even notice it.4
-
Speaking of dual citizenship I have dual Canada/USA. Does give a bit more choices.
Sports bra...I have at the beach, and once here at home. And as @martaindale said I actually did feel more empowered!
Safety I only ever run on greenways and usually when people are out and about. But there is one trail that has bridges where transients live and that does scare me at times. I usually run as fast as I can at that spot. I too would be clumsy with a gun let alone use it.

Can someone interested in doing the challenge for @PastorVincent pm me so I can send you a link and see if I’ve got it set up right?0
-
I just checked my bookmarks to see when I started with this group. It was August of 2018, so have been here for a little over 2 years now. I was reading through some of the posts - @PastorVincent had some really cool things to say. He posted this in Sept 2018. He said to insert the word month in place of day and was encouraging those of us who were woefully short of their August goals. It's appropriate for everyone today too.
Then, I noticed it has been a long time since we have heard from @MegaMooseEsq and @7lenny7 . Has anyone heard from them?6 -
4.58 miles running plus about 4 walking. It was going to be 5 miles running, but going up the final hill I was feeling fine and then I suddenly wasn’t. Come to find out, looking at my data later, the heat index was 101 and the dewpoint 81. And my 11 mile easy pace had gradually crept up to a 10 mile not so easy pace. Anyway I felt like a puppet with my strings cut, so, what was gong to be my first 5 mile on roads since being injured ended up being a reminder that September in the Mid-South is still summer. Looking forward to weather that’s not so oppressive!
The good news is that my knee seems to be holding up!
On our walk back we pass by a school with a ball field which is closed due to Covid. It looked like there was a game today - the Crows were playing the Hawks! There were four enormous crows hopping around the infield and a lineup of hawks sitting in a row on the fence. It’s hard to get good bird photos using a phone but I managed to capture two hawks and a crow in a not very good photo:6 -
As suggested above... my little light DOES pair well with a noxgear vest. As you will hopefully be able to see in the spoiler, it does light up bright enough that if you had it on a steady color and not disco mode or whatever I had it on for demonstration, it would give some light to the world around you. But my light means I can see, and noxgear means others can see me.
Noxgear was ALSO a gift from the same bestie who gave me the light, (she is also to blame for me running at all, let alone running a half marathon) when I moved to this little town I’m in that has very few sidewalks and fewer street lights. I have worn just it, I have worn it with a waist belt water bottle, and I have worn it over the top of my wunjo packs. It is
In terms of how effective they are.... I believe what I told bestie after I tried it out the first time is, “it is awesome, if anyone hits me when I am wearing this, I will know that they MEANT to do it!”

Just popping in quick to update from tonight's run. Group speedwork - we warmed up and then did 1 minute intervals. 1 min hard, 1 min recovery between x 12. Then 4 sprints and cooldown.
Beautiful sunset when we were finished. Dark by the time I got home. The light conversation is not something I'm ready for but it's happening soon.
Will try to catch up with you all tomorrow!3
