October 2020 Monthly Running Challange

So I just saw another virtual challenge - this one local. It's running from a local Fleet Feet store to Gatlinburg, TN. 250 miles. It starts on Halloween and goes through Christmas. That's 2 more miles than my current challenge and less time to achieve it. Wondering if I should dare to sign up....
@skippygirlsmom Did you see this? Are you going to try it?6 -
October Goal: 100 Miles
10/1: 6.24 miles
6.24/100 miles completed for October
1066.18/1000 miles for Run the Year Team Pavement Pounders
I started off October with a 10K. It was another perfect running weather morning. I could really get used to this. I have a HM coming up on November 7th. I was following a Hal Higdon plan that I tweaked, and the last few weeks I have been running, but not doing any speed work. So today I attempted a Tempo Run. I'm not entirely sure if I did it right. But I ran the first mile as a warm up, then four miles at HM pace and then the last mile as a cool down. At least that is what I attempted. I'm not really sure if that is a tempo run or a pace run to be honest, but I figure that the fact that I was actually trying to run at a certain pace and not just running easy counts as speed work. I ended up with my splits at 10:49, 9:58,10:00, 9:42, 9:52 and 10:04 with an average pace of 10:02. Then I tacked on the last .24 mile so I could get to 10k. It was a really nice run and I felt really good. The moon was gorgeous again this morning. It was big and orange. I think we are getting some of the smoke from the west, but it does make for pretty skies.
@kristinajeang I'm really impressed that you are getting out and getting it done with two little ones. I wish I had started being fit when I was younger.
@Tramboman I hope you are planning your fishing before your shingles vaccine. Maybe I'm a wuss, but I thought that the shingles vaccine was very painful. My arm was sore for days both times.
2020 races:
11/7/20: Run for 57th AHC Half Marathon3 -
Today was a perfect storm (quite literally) for my run. 1) my running partner (divorced friend) slept in and wasnt answering my texts, so I decided to go anyway, 2) it started hailing as soon as I opened my door to go outside, despite no rain/hail being in the forecast for another three hours, 3) I started running after it stopped and it downpour rained three more times for a few minutes each time on my run, 4) the cold rainy weather made my ankle sore, and 5) my wet sleeve hit the "finish run" button on my watch at 2.6mi, so I had to start another activity for the last .5mi and it was so discouraging.
BUT, I still did it. Dunder Mifflin running club virtual 5k is done! (warning, kid picture spam included below since I mentioned them earlier in the thread to @kgirlhart ; i'll remove their picture in a few hours though..)

3.1/35 for October
FYI the "edit post" option is only available for an hour after you post. So if you don't want to leave something up, take it down within an hour
Also GREAT JOB on your 5k!

Trout is lovely - rub in some rock salt, pan fry in a bit of milk, nom, nom!
Sign up @WandaVaughn and if you know any good virutal challenges where I can get some bling in the UK I'd love to know.
Right there with you @kristinajeang - I just ran a race pace 10k, not planned however I started 7 miles from home and the rain was giving it some. The rain stopped at 4 miles and when I heard the split I thought.. why not, and gave it effort for the rest. Knocked almost 2 minutes off my PB which wasn't great in the first place but still leaves me feeling like I've had a great start to October.
Sign me up for 100 miles!8 -
Camaramandy648 wrote: »@Tramboman the girl that works across the hall from me goes trout fishing all the time! I made cod last night for the first time. Didn't hate it. The whole spread was baked cod, peas, carrots, kale and collard greens, and battered cod. Anyway I am pretty sure I have never had trout. Are you going to keep them and eat them or throw them back?
In September, I had 206.75 miles! I remember when I was sure I could never do "something like that." My mentality now is totally different - Now, it's more along the lines of "hmmm how far CAN I go?"
Anyway, back to work. Love you all. Happy running.
I keep one occasionally, but usually put them back to catch again. The place I fish is fly fishing only. Caught three today before the wind shifted and they stopped biting.3 -
@kristinajeang Adorable kids! And great completing your 5K! I too did the Dunder Mifflen. Loving the shirt.
@kgirlhart Great run, great paces as well. So I think I miscalculated my last 10K. I didn't stop the watch after the distance. So I think actually it was more like 59:57. So not quite as good as I thought lol. Still, I got it just under an hour so I'm ok with that. And also on the shingles shot. My Dr wants me to get it (since also my dad has had shingles and not fun), but I'm a wuss for that reason. He said I would probably be no good the next day so get in on a Friday...Good Luck @Tramboman Let me know how it is!
@rheddmobile eek on the finger! Hope you are ok. I've sliced part of my finger using a mandolin and had to got to urgent care to get it cauterized as it just would not stop bleeding - I had nicked an artery. This was pre-COVID though. Hope your fares ok! Hugs.
@Camaramandy648 200 plus! That is serious stuff.
No run today, spin instead. Will get some miles started for October tomorrow!

I got the shot in my left arm because I cast with my right. It was more painful than my flu shot.6 -
@skippygirlsmom my husband and I high-fived once we made it out of what would have been the 'two under two' range, and then decided to have a baby IF we have a third, we will wait until our youngest is 3
@polskagirl01 thank you and THANK YOU! I did not know it was an hour window, so I appreciate that a lot! I just would rather not have the kids pictures out there for the world to see/forever.
@TheMrWobbly nice job, definitely a good start to oct!! I was able to shave 3min off my 5k time despite it all, and a new PB for me after having the kids, so I will take it!
@hamsterwheel6 thank you!! I'm definitely so excited to wear the shirt! Since it was so cold and it's a tad tighter that what I imagined, I just wore my normal running clothes (baggier/thicker/long sleeve), but I'm super excited to wear it around on the weekends!5 -
@kristinajeang Way to go on the Dunder Mifflin 5K! Especially in that weather. And cute kiddos. I don't blame you for not wanting to leave the pictures out there for long though.
@hamsterwheel6 I think getting the shingles vaccine on a Friday is a good idea. I did find it to be pretty painful. But from everything I've ever heard about shingles I would rather have a sore arm for a couple of days than get shingles.
@Tramboman Smart move getting it on your non-casting arm. I hope it's not too sore for too long.2 -
Anyone have any pro tips for dealing with painful, leaky (sorry for TMI) blisters under toenails? My big toe was sore after my long run (silly me, trying to run down a dry river bed in road shoes) on Saturday, and I'd noticed it was a bit purple looking but it wasn't until after this morning's run, when it started hurting again, that I really examined it and found it was raised and the corner (don't ask, it's a weird nail that was operated on 30 years ago and the roots down the sides were killed) was sticking up a lot. When I went to try and cut the corner to stop it catching on anything I found a blister underneath, which has been kinda leaking all day. I'm trying to keep it clean and let it air to dry it out, but dang it hurts and I have a virtual race on Saturday!

I'm in for 80 miles this month. Hope all-a-y'all are doing well.5

Hello!
I think I will aim for 50 in October. Perfect timing for me on this Challenge which is weird so I'm definitely ahead of the game already! First run this evening!!6 -

I don't think "grit your teeth" is a good answer.
Maybe get it looked at by a professional?
A lot can go wrong...2 -
@rheddmobile how's the finger?
@hamsterwheel6 Thank you! Serious, it is. I haven't run yet this week...
@Tramboman agree for @eleanorhawkins that "grit your teeth," is probably not a good answer. I'm not a doctor. What I would do is probably grit my teeth. But if it were my friend or my child, I'd take them to the doctor.
Note: I am a hypocrite and I have made a deal with my big brother to let me get completely hammered and just rip my toenail off for me. he's the only man for the job.
@eleanorhawkins please don't be like me. Go to the doctor.2 -
@WandaVaughn Where do you live? I don't recall you saying, but Gatlinburg is only a little over 50 miles from my house.
Great run @kgirlhart !
The doctor is probably a good idea @eleanorhawkins . But, my first thought was to soak it in warm Epsom Salts water. That usually helps my feet issues, but I've never had anything like that. It might make it feel better while waiting to see the doctor.

Overwhelmed and not organized for October yet. I did 2.1 miles this morning before strength training. I was luck again that the rain ended - and then it turned out be lovely.
My short term goals are to run tomorrow morning and then hang on until 5:00 pm without losing it on zoom in before that.5 -
I haven’t caught up on the thread yet - got my first 5k on the board for October, doing my weekly trot behind the grocery store while my husband shops. I feel so much better about life doing this than I used to, waiting in the car! Also, I noticed that adding a day means I have become a four times a week runner? Hmmm. So far it seems to be working for me!
Goal for October is to gradually increase long runs to 8 miles without injuring myself! My husband and I are signed up for a holiday series of 5ks, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.
The finger is safely tucked inside a hydrocolloidal bandage and I am resisting the impulse to look at it, since you aren’t supposed to mess with them until they come off on their own. So far it doesn’t seem infected but I am annoyed by how many things I keep bumping my hand on.8 -

If you have a hematoma, what a doctor would probably do is trephinate the nail.

I never have the nerve with my own toes but my husband has done it with his toe and it was much improved afterwards. Just be sure to keep it clean.
@Tramboman Rainbow trout is my favorite fish to eat! I don’t know how you have the discipline to throw them back, I would eat them all!1 -
I'm going to say 100 miles this month.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. @rheddmobile I know what you mean, there was a time I was incapable of doing anything to myself. I had gestational diabetes and I remembering sitting in the doctor's office (hormones too!) sobbing at the thought of having to prick my own finger to check my sugar levels. Then came childbirth, severe psoriasis... I ended up learning to give myself twice-weekly injections, sometimes with a small child bouncing on the couch! Anyway, I ramble. I think I pretty much already did the same as the trephination thing when I cut it, as I burst the blister. I found some antibiotic cream in the medicine cabinet so I slathered it in that last night and this morning it doesn't seem to hurt and there doesn't seem to be any redness. So today I will let it air and rest and see how it goes. Maybe if it doesn't hurt I will try to put a toe protector thingy on it to run tomorrow... Did I sound like a runner joke there?5

Good Morning Runners!
10/1 - 2.55
10/2 - Rest
10/3 - Looking forward to a mountainous hike in Arkansas tomorrow 🌲🍁🍂🍄🌻🏔🗻⛰5 -
I don’t have any long races planned, only an in person 5k on Halloween. I am going to shoot for 50 this month and focus a good bit more on strength training at least 4x per week. My Pump instructor commented on the improved definition in my arms this week, which made me feel good about the work I’ve been doing. I am down 30+ pounds since April, so I want to tone up the loose, jiggly bits.
10/1: 1.5 miles + ST
Oct Total: 1.5 + 1 ST10 -
I was going to have salmon for dinner and then thought about @rheddmobile so chicken it is!2

When I first had my diabetes diagnosis I would make my husband stick my finger! Now I don’t even think about it, it’s not a thing.
Hoping it feels better tomorrow and the toe protector helps! If the toenail is bulging sometimes the toe protector makes it worse because it makes it larger and more likely to contact the shoe. But at least it keeps it clean.
Usually mine are okay since I started wearing toe protectors, but a while ago I took out the toe NEXT to the toe that usually gets bruised. I guess my socks were on funny that day or something... but anyway I have an entirely fake toenail painted in that space at the moment. Running pro tip: if you paint your toenails purple, no one can tell the difference!4 -

@marisap2010 30+ lbs, WOW! You've been working hard!
I went for a quick bike ride today. It felt just about right. I'm trying to get totally recovered as HM#3 was harder on me than the others. Or perhaps more likely it was the accumulation of all three put together with my body knowing that was the last one in a row. I kinda thought maybe I was coming down with something, but maybe not. I started back up with my vitamin D because it's getting dark again.
The good news is... the race organizers (who were saying absolutely nothing about whether there was even going to be a race this month) posted signups yesterday. 250 spots for a race that 825 runners finished last year. They were gone in just a few hours. I had been checking [stalking] their website, multiple times a day, for weeks, and just happened to see it about an hour after signups started. So I got my spot(!), and let a few friends know they needed to sign up immediately as well. So as it stands now, I am signed up for 2 more HM's, and have to complete them both to qualify for the challenge. I want this so much, but am trying to not let my hopes get back up, as any little thing could derail it.
