Hello Everyone.
I am Dawn and live in South East British Columbia. I am 60.
My goal remains the same as it has been for quite some time, 16-20 AF days per month.
I do it kind of diary style:
Thursday October 01 - AF - I did manage 17AF days for September even though I drank every single day (moderately) of my birthday week while away. I have to wean myself off of that path.
Friday October 02 - AF - I really felt like having drinks though.
Saturday October 03 - Drinks. I did flirt with the idea of an AF October...for a minute. Not yet, and not sure if ever I will want to be joining the sober squad.
Rolling total: 2 AF days out of 3 days so far.7 -
@Samand303
I grow Beets, I make Harvard, Borscht, Roasted with Thyme from my garden, plain boiled with butter...but I would never think of putting cheese on Beets! Well.. you go girl : - )
You have a Key Lime Tree!!!!!????? I didn't even think that Key Limes were even real except for some sort of weird hybrid from like Monsanto or something. Completely impressed that you can pick limes from your yard! You must live somewhere Tropical/Hot. Kind of jelly over here.6 -
So far I am 1/4 days AF for October. I drank heavily on Friday but only had one hard seltzer yesterday. Today I am going to get out and hike and just reset my mind. I need to get ready for another long week at work and a stressful Saturday with the third anniversary of my step sons death. Thinking about it as moderation and being able to allow it for myself a few days a month makes it easier to avoid it. I log all my calories too and am devoted to losing the weight so that helps keep me on track too.6

@dawnbgethealthy ....try sprinkling a little feta on those beets after roasting ??
Day #4 of Sober October. Let's see how long that lasts...5 -
We had a small Bday BBQ for hubby yesterday... first time seeing some friends that we hadn't seen since March. It was really nice, but now I am a little nervous, thinking about the new dreaded "C" word. Nobody was showing any signs of sickness... I think now after so many months I am feeling a bit paranode, I don't like this feeling at all.
1 AF / 3 days4 -
My son, his wife and 2 of their friends are at the camp with us this weekend. It has been fun! We stayed at my Mom's next door so the adult kids could take over the our place. I was able to WI Saturday & Sunday since I was staying next door. Last night we had skinny margaritas with chicken & beef fajitas. They left after lunch then my sister arrived with 3 bottles of wine.
I'm not sure when in October I'll get back to targeting a few AF days. Especially since we are hanging out at the fishing camp. But I did pour out half of my second margarita last night after dinner. Just wasn't feeling it.

Ok, who started talking beers? LOVE fresh beets, YES and sprinkled with cheese after they are hot. Also I take a fresh raw beet, scrub it clean and grate it add a little vinegar eat like slaw.(gallbladder pain cure)
Day 4 of October:
2A
2AF
Could have been a really bad alcohol weekend but I kept it in control. No headaches, or blackouts or munchies.
On to week two. Once again my goal is for alcohol only on weekends this month.5 -
I started the talk of beets. I love them and had success growing them this year. This recipe has the beets, beet greens, and blue cheese. I’ll try them grated!
The key lime tree is outside in the summer and inside during the winter. We live in NJ😁. Started it 5 years ago from a nursery as a small twig on a transplant root. Maybe 12” high. It’s 4’ now. We never get enough all at once for a pie, so I’m glad to pick them and toss them in drinks.

Hey everyone, hope life's been treating you well enough in these crazy times.
Got back from my vacation Friday night and have been getting my head around real life again. I didn't meet my AF goal for September, and drinks on vacation were a lot (4 on average spread out throughout the day). We didn't go super light on the food either - we made a big, dense chocolate cake. I haven't baked a dessert in forever because there's no one to share it with right now. I've put on 4 lbs (2 are probably water weight, 2 are probably real). I think I'm supposed to feel bad or guilty or something because I gained weight and didn't meet my goals, but I really don't. I enjoyed myself and decompressed. Husband and I connected in that way that's hard to do when you're just living everyday life and have a cat yelling at you all the time and can't go out to dinner because there's a pandemic going on. But work starts up again tomorrow, so we're back to limiting drinks and counting calories.
October goals: 15 AF days, keep the drinks per day/week to a number my doctor wouldn't scold me for
Oct 1: 7 drinks (last day in Colorado, drank everything we had left...)
Oct 2: AF
Oct 3: 3 drinks? 4? We opened 2 bottles of wine, but husband was drinking a lot faster than I was, and he was doing the pouring.
Oct 4: AF
Goal: AF for Oct 5-8, then I'll go from there
Colorado photos!

My sister opened a two bottles of wine after fishing today ... before dinner. Couple of glasses of wine. I would say 3 but my last glass I poured into DH's to keep him from opening a 3rd bottle of wine.

Good tip. Thanks!
I usually roast them with herbs from my garden, delish.
I very rarely eat cheese, but I will have to try that : - )1 -

@Samand303
Fabulous photos! Thanks!
I had no idea what a Key Lime Tree looked like, or that it would have such beautiful flowers.
I guess that you will be dragging that 4 foot tree inside sometime this month in NJ.
I put beet greens into so many things. I cut them when they are tender and nice and generally freeze them to make them easier to slice into strips to add to stir-frys, chili, soups, etc.4 -
Still waiting for more photos of your getaway @MissMay
I think that you mentioned a trip to a pumpkin patch?2 -
@chocolate_owl
I am glad that you had such a nice trip.
Beautiful pictures.
Thanks for posting them.
That bridge looks terrifying.
I really really love to see people's pictures on here.3 -
Hi guys, I am back from our Utah parks vacation. Managed no wine for the first 4 days then drank the rest of the days but moderately for being on vacation mode. My definition of moderate vacation drinking was not finishing the wine bottle, getting 11% or less, 2 glasses of water in between each glass, only drinking with dinner.
What kept me from going overboard? I told myself I could do what I wanted but the rule was when I got home, first thing was to jump on the scale. That fear alone kept me better well behaved.
We did eat inside restaurants 3x for the first time since Covid and could not believe how everyone behaved like Covid never existed (no masks, tables closeby, packed with tourists). We did all we could to protect ourselves but yet came back home feeling a bit nervous. So far, not sick...

Happy Monday! Checking in!
Goal: 4 days of alcohol
Oct 1: AF
Oct 2: two sour beers (this was planned)
Oct 3: went on a party bus to celebrate a birthday! It included dinner at an italian restaurant and a cocktail bar. I had never been on one before, and was the oldest on the bus (Birthday girl turned 29...I am 40). It was fun! And I drank a lot. Totally planned, and may have totally solidified the rest of the month being AF LOL.
Oct 4: AF
I believe I have finally gotten past the hurdle of wanting a glass of wine after work. I just don't crave it anymore. Saturday may have proven my tolerance is high, but my weight is high and I at pasta.
I know I have read on here before that it is common to crave sweets when not drinking alcohol on the regular. I NEVER craved sweets (think ice cream, cake, cookies), but lately have definitely had more of a sweet tooth. I have been able to keep those cravings in check and stay within my calories if I do eat a sweet, but working hard to keep this from becoming the next habit.

@dawnbgethealthy lugging in the key lime wouldn’t be too bad if I didn’t have to carry it up 3 steps! Then I put it on a little roller and I crawl/push it across the carpet. My own mini-workout 💪😂
When we kept it on the patio, so no steps/even with the house, the wind would blow it off the edge!
Dang...now I want a gin and tonic and it’s only 1pm work lunch break 😁4 -
Couple of bottles of wine with my sister & DH as we enjoyed the evening and dinner. My 3rd glass was handed over to DH ...

Greetings from someone who has been off her home block only 3 times since February....I've been going on a virtual vacation through all your fabulous photos !! Thank you SO much !!
Made a nice garlic\rosemary beef roast yesterday...and did not open any red wine to "go with". AF beer will have to do for now.
Day 6 of [maybe] Sober October.
Election Day [week] is gay-run-teed to be a drunken blur here.6 -

@globalhiker Your pics are gorgeous! It looks like a lovely place to explore, I'm adding it to my list. But I feel you on being around a bunch of people who are acting like the pandemic isn't a thing. We didn't try to eat in restaurants, but there were a lot of missing masks in grocery stores despite the statewide order and people standing very close in line. About a week since our last "scary" outing and not feeling sick, fingers crossed it stays that way.5 -
Is it ok to jump in a week late? I recently rejoined MFP and this would be a timely challenge to participate in, especially entering into holiday season. I don't have any boundaries surrounding alcohol just yet. But I haven't gotten off to a great start. Last night was an AF night and I slept so well! I'm planning on another AF night tonight with the promise of another. As I've entered into menopause, sleep has become sooo important because it's been an elusive commodity!9

3 AF / 5 days... 2 in a row
I am already thinking how nice it would be to have a pour tonight, ugh! What is it about the 3rd day??? I am going to continue to remind myself how nice it is to wake up in the morning, more refreshed due to better sleep, and best of all no guilt. No guilt because without the pour, my snacking is more under control... no mindless eating. I would really like to see the scale move down a bit this week. Maybe I need to make some post-its in the morning when my willpower is good, so when I get home I will have the little reminders to stay strong, stay the course!6 -
Hey all! I'm late checking in this month, but I'm here! September proved challenging for me with some anxiety and also the wildfires in my area. Lots of stress=drinking for me sadly. I'm determined to have a better October. I'm not aiming for a Sober October. I think that sounds like a good idea, but honestly I'm not there right now and I'm definitely not there during this anxiety inducing election season. I'm aiming for at least 20 days AF though.
Last weekend we went camping, it was kind of a last hurrah camping trip for the year. We are making the most out of whatever last scraps of summer weather come our way. So it looks like I've been drinking a lot in October, but it really was a special sort of trip.
So far in 2020:
Jan: 23 days AF
Feb: 16 days AF
Mar: 22 days AF
April: 19 days AF
May: 12 days AF
June: 16 days AF
July: 20 days AF
August: 16 days AF
September: 16 days AF
Total for 2020: 160/274 days AF
So, for October so far:
Oct 1: 2 drinks
Oct 2: 6 drinks
Oct 3: 4 drinks
Oct 4: AF
Oct 5: AF
So far in Oct: 2/5 days AF7 -
Back home in a more controlled environment ... bye bye fishing camp 🎣 and daily happy hour! 1st AF day of October with many to catch up to hit my 16 this month.
Oct accountability: 1/6 days AF
This week: 1 AF days
Goal: AF days 4 per week / 16 per month; limit 1-2 glasses per day5
