1/1: 3.39 Afghanistan, Albania
1/2: 2.41 Algeria, Andorra
1/3: 2.05 Angola
1/4 off

lots of hugs and healing thoughts @skippygirlsmom
*So, my New Years resolution is to hike all 193 (or 195 depending on your source) countries of the world this year. This could be difficult, since I don’t have a passport. But YouTube to the rescue! I have been using the site to take train “trips” recently, and have found them strangely motivating. Why not the world?

January Goal: 90 Miles
1/1: 6.26 miles
1/3: 9.02 miles
1/5: 5.03 miles
20.31/90 miles completed for January
I ran 5 miles this morning. The first couple of miles were kind of meh. Not bad, but it was cold and I wasn't really feeling it. It was about 32°F and really I don't like it when it is lower than about 45°. But as the run went on I found a groove and started to enjoy it. My hip has been good today. It was a little tight after my long run on Sunday and I was worried I had overdone it. I do need to order new shoes. I meant to do it today but I was too busy at work and now I am too tired. @summerskier I usually get new shoes between 300-350 miles. I guess the holidays just got in my way this time.
Oh @skippygirlsmom I am so sorry the ankle recovery is going to be so long.
2021 Races: I need to sign up for some races! 😁8 -
@skippygirlsmom oh no. Oh biggest hugs to you. I know those fractures are bad, but didn't realise a year of recovery bad!! I'm so sorry.
@quilteryoyoI saw that @runs_on_espresso had an Instagram post and a new ep of her podcast out yesterday, so she's still around. Maybe taking a new year break.1 -
Really happy to hear you will definitely be back running @skippygirlsmom and only a few weeks non-load bearing. We can all be part of your recovery plan getting you up and moving again and you can be the only one to put walking miles into the run the world challenge when you are up and about again. Stay awesome!3
-
@skippygirlsmom omgoodness you poor thing! My immediate thought was a whole year of upper body workouts will give you shoulders to die for ;-)
Today is the Spanish version of xmas day, so I'm drinking coffee in bed, listening to the drizzle (the major alerts are from 6pm we're apparently due one third of the entire winter's rain in 48 hours) and thinking I could have run today after all instead of cramming all the miles in early. Oh well, coffee in bed is a nice luxury. Very tight calf muscles, not sure whether from all the running or because I masochistically turned the tens up a bit too much last night...7 -
Oh no @skippygirlsmom, that’s a bitter pill. You’re going to have to get creative and find something new to keep you fit, healthy and engaged for the coming year. Chin up.2

Interesting. My Garmin has been doing various weird things recently... maybe its related.

@skippygirlsmom So sorry to hear about the long recovery time. One year is better than never though!1

22.4/90 miles
1/1: 13.4 miles
1/4: 3 miles
1/5: 6 miles
Logging 2 today. I’ve been logging in and following along but forgetting to actually log my runs. Idk. Anyway, I went out for 3 miles a couple days ago because I was itching for a run even though my plan didn’t have me running again just yet. My legs felt pretty good except for my left calf being a little tight. Did some stretching, rolling, massaging, etc.
Yesterday I had 6 miles on the plan. I did the first mile with my family, who is restarting C25k then finished off the last 5 miles alone. My legs were getting a little tired but you couldn’t tell from my pace, so I think I’m pretty well recovered. Just a little calf tightness that I just really need to work on over the next couple of weeks.
As a side note, I’m so happy my family is starting to run again. My husband used to run and we could do some runs together and he would occasionally do races with me. My daughter had trained up for her first 10k in Feb 2020 then stopped running altogether as things shut down. I really enjoyed doing a run every now and then with some company and feeling like I’m not just exercising alone. So, they are starting over with plans to maybe do a trail race later this year. My daughter is still doing remote school until mid-March at least. So, they are using this as her PE and they have the time to get the runs in during the day.7 -
oh @skippysmom that's tough news
overslept and didn't get a run in. hope for a couple by the end of the day2 -
@martaindale Yeah for the family starting to run again! I would think that would make it easier to get out there and get it done.

Cloudy, low 30s F, with little wind and just a few snowflakes to keep me company. Stretched the back first again this morning and it worked out well!!
@Cricketmad88 Good job on your PR.
When you pop in here claiming your December 2021 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
PUT THE FUN BACK IN THE RUN!

Ha ha @Tramboman I posted a picture of my foot in the spoiler, I’ll provide @Avidkeo xrays when I get them, I'll save you the pictures of all my cuts and bruises ha ha
Thanks everyone, so many names to mention, you all are the best
I agree 100% better to wait and have a full recovery than to keep fighting it. I expected a few months like 4 or 5 but not that long. My friend has something similar (non running related) and she still has problems years later.
@quilteryoyo I didn’t get into all the details with her, my head was spinning, I asked about full recovery and she said I’ll be fully recovered next year. It’s always fun to have a recovery friend
@TheMrWobbly I was thinking of the walking miles too. I told the race director for my half marathon challenge I was going to do my miles on my knee scooter ha ha
@eleanorhawkins we are on the same wavelength I have a gym membership and I thought good time to work on the rest of me and they have a pool etc.
Skip heads back to school the 17th which is crappy since it’s my right foot and I can’t drive. Maybe I can steal one of the scooters from WalMart and drive it around town LOL
I see @WandaVaughn on my newsfeed so I know she’s alive and kicking.
Oh remember I told you I won a month of training with a great bootcamp in town? I told him what happened and asked if it was okay to give the training to someone else in the drawing and he said he would do that, but my month is good whenever I can come out and join. What a nice guy.

1/3 – rest + yoga
1/4 – 5.12
1/5 – weights
1/6 – 5.35
I met two friends for a 5 at 5 this morning (5 miles at 5 am). Temp was around 30 with a small breeze but I was dressed comfortably in pants, a long sleeve tech shirt and a heavy shirt on top of that. I started with a pair of light-weight gloves but shed them about halfway into the run. I find as long as my ears are covered I stay fairly warm.
I’m loving everyone’s suggestions for podcasts and am making a list!
Way to go on getting out there @dreamer12151! The first step is literally the hardest part.
@skippygirlsmom – Hopefully, after your initial healing you can ride an exercise bike, lift weights, etc. to keep your stamina going. I know it’s not the same as running and I’m bummed for you but you will get there and be the comeback queen! I hope you will still remain active here but I understand it’s hard to read about other people running when you can’t. (edited - just saw the pictures - ouch!)
Great PB time @Cricketmad88!
@quilteryoyo – in case I don’t get back here before Friday, I will be praying that all goes well with your surgery and that you get on the road to healing quickly!

Dang that is one ugly ankle Skippygirlsmom!!! But I love the tattoo. A year is a really long recovery time. When I spiral fractured my femor in 1997 it did take months to heal but swimming was my refuge after the initial surgery wounds heel. Hopefully you won't have external fixators and will be able to swim also? But be careful with ankles because I have several friends who required multiple surgeries for them so you want to just do one and done!
Holy moly CricketM 5 miles in 32 and change is awesome.... Rabbit run!!!! congratulations.
Checking in. One of my goals is to improve my pace this year. That is huge because I have been running since I was 18 and really I don't seem to get faster no matter how much base I put in. So I started putting together a list of things which effect running pace and it got longer and longer and longer but it was interesting. One thing that I noted was fuel tho. I have been a yo yo dieter much of my life and when I was on the lose weight yo I tended to run more but it was typically in a deficit. When I was overeating and gaining I usually was too lazy to run. Now in maintenance it seems easier to eat to fuel and improve performance.
Anyway, today for only the 3rd time ever in my life I had a split under 9. It was actually 8:49 which is my best one ever and I know I was working hard for it as my HR maxed at 195... LOL. Anyway, my goals for 2021 include running one 8 minute plus split per week and I really wasn't sure since i only did it one time before in Nov 2020 and once in Dec 2020 whether I could really do it but hey I will take it for at least the first week.
And no worries on the HR as my recovery in 1 and 2 minutes is typically back to walking range.

Wow that's displaced! When is surgery? They waiting for the swelling to go down?0 -
@skippygirlsmom Ouch! So sorry, tough to hear 1 year. - But as mentioned since you do have access to a gym, you can keep up you fitness in other ways - one reason I got my spin bike - I'm injury prone sigh.
Big hugs to you! PS. Love the tatoo!
Went for a run outdoors today. Started with a HIIT workout, and all was going well until half way through when my hamstring (the same from last injury) started feeling tight and slightly painful. Immediately slowed down which helped, and did the rest of my run with run walk intervals. Managed 6.75. Came home and stretched, but it's still feeling a bit tight. More rest and stretching in order.

After maybe (definitely) going a bit too hard yesterday, I took it nice and easy this morning for 4 miles. Managed to keep the pace about 30 secs/mile slower today and I think my legs will thank me for it. They are definitely still recovering and I let myself go too fast yesterday.
Headed out for climbing tonight and maybe tomorrow. I don't run again until Saturday, so I can probably get away with a bit more climbing this week.
I am thinking of joining a Saturday climbing class. It's 1 hour and focuses on technique and hold usage; the sorts of things that can take your climbing up a grade without suddenly having to be crazy strong. I think it could be helpful. It would make my Saturday runs more of a scheduling challenge since the class is at 10am. Of course, right smack in the middle of the morning. I think I can squeeze the run in before class if they are on the shorter side. O/w, it's either Saturday afternoon or back to Friday nights. It's also possible that after a couple months the classes start feeling repetitive. Guess I won't know until I try them out. They also do a fitness class on Thursday nights that is 1 hour and would make me do some weight training. Maybe I'll give that a shot too.6 -
@skippygirlsmom That ankle looks painful! So swollen! I'm so sorry to hear that you won't be running for a year. You seem to have a great attitude; already looking for ways to shift your focus. I think walking miles should could double when done as post-op recovery!2

That's some ankle...2 -
@Avidkeo the surgery is Jan 15th. They need to wait for the blister to heal first so it doesn’t get infected. It is a bit ugly isn’t it.
@hamsterwheel thanks on the tattoo on the outside is says Dad and the inside it says Mom.
I figured the picture would add to the shoe, running clothes and food porn ha ha we have broken bones porn

01/01... 10.12
04/01... 4.20
05/01... 5.41
06/01... 5.22
07/01... 4.02
Total KM 28.97
The plan called for cadence drills today which is a target of 187 - 200. That's pretty much where my natural cadence is anyway so it was basically a normal run but with more mindfulness to keep my legs turning over fast.
I need to spend some quality time with my foam roller. I've been neglecting it for months and I can really tell. I briefly, as in for a few seconds, tried rolling my ITB yesterday and it was torture!!
@polskagirl01 Thanks for the article
@skippygirlsmom Ouch ouch ouch! Sorry about the long recovery
@martaindale That's awesome your family will get out running with you again, it makes a nice change to have company on a run that's for sure
@Cricketmad88 Yay for the PB!

That makes the tattoo even better! Love it. And yes lol! The injury porn haha. Glad you have your sense of humor intact despite it all.2 -
Smoking start to 2021 for me - lots of running, 10-15km nearly every day. Yoga streak going well. It’s been stinking hot though and super humid - literally wringing perspiration out of my gear at the end of the run and it’s still before 9am.7
-
@skippygirlsmom that tattoo is a nice accent for your multicolored and swollen ankle! Yikes, it looks so painful and that blister is wicked. You sound in good spirits though! Good for you. I did end up signing up for that half marathon challenge you shared so I'm planning on doing my first one this weekend. I was thinking about you for that, but if you can do some walking, maybe biking, and swimming hopefully you can maintain some activity (eventually, when you are sufficiently recovered). I know a lot of people who really love aqua running in the pool for rehab if that's an option. Very nice to let you delay the training you won too.
I signed up to go to group speedwork tonight and I'm regretting it. Need to get myself moving soon. It sure sounds nicer to just sit on the couch.4 -
@hamsterwheel6 and @katharmonic thanks I've had it a long time with Dad last year unfortunately added Mom.
@katharmonic I'm glad you signed up for the challenge. I'm going to talk to the Suzanne to see if I can do my HMs another way.2 -
@Cricketmad88 Congratulations on your 5K PB!!! Awesome!
@skippygirlsmom That looks just awful! Big hugs to you! Love that you gave your boot camp away and the guy is going to let you do it later. That's sweet of both of you! I'm hoping you will be able to walk after a few weeks and hopefully do some light running. I'll have to wait until after my surgery to see what my specific orders are.
Thanks @Teresa502 . Nice run this morning. I find keeping my ears warm helps a lot too.
Wow! That's a great run @SummerSkier ! Mile 5 is usually when I start tiring out, not getting faster. You rock!
@hamsterwheel6 Glad you are listening to your body. Hope the hamstring feels better after stretching it out.

I know we are an apolitical group, I wanted to let our American members know im thinking of you all today.
Be kinda boring when there isn't this political drama eh? Though boring looks good right now.9
