@TheMrWobbly : Is our map yet up and running. I only get a view of Massachussettes and "Your map order is pending" and "This message is only visible to administrators"0

I’m still sick but hopefully turned a corner now. Just wanted to jump on and send my prayers and best wishes over to @quilteryoyo for her surgery today.
Missing running, missing you all. Am reading and following and hope to be back at it soon x12 -

Thank you everyone for all of the thoughts and prayers. I really wanted to write something grand as my last post before my operation, but, like I said, it's late, I'm tired, and my brain isn't working very good. I just want you all to know how much you mean to me. We have laughed, cried, shared, ranted, ran, challenged each other, supported each other where ever we are in life, etc. I consider you all my dear friends. Keep up the good work. I'll "see" you in a few days. Love you all!
best of luck2 -
Have an awesome day @quilteryoyo
There won't be time to get the map sorted until the weekend @HonuNui as challenge hound have asked me to map it myself and it is a lot of miles.4 -
katharmonic wrote: »@thisvickyruns that's an interesting challenge with a lot of options. I think the increase/decrease mileage pattern would be good. For me that would be a tough week at the mileage you listed, but it is supposed to be a challenge I guess! If you think it's too much, what if you backed it down just a mile? 2-4-6-8-6-4-2 seems more doable to me and that 2 would sure feel good at the end. Or if you rearranged yours to 3-5-7-3-5-7-9 or 5-7-9-3-5-7-3 so you didn't have 7-9-7 facing you right in the middle. Depends how numerically satisfying you find those sequences though
I think I had friends do something like a 5k-4 mile - 5mile -10k-15k-13.1-26.2 week as a challenge, based on local race distances. But that's crazy. You could add in a shorter distance - maybe even a 1 mile- and lop off the marathon.
I think the reason I dismissed 2 4 6 8 6 4 2 was that the overall mileage is less than what i did last time.
I like 3 5 7 3 5 7 9... but i do like a nice pattern!!!
i also thought about doing Fibonacci again, but trying to beat my time overall for the 7 days (as you log your results in hours) but i'm not sure as i like easy miles when i'm running consecutive days.
Thanks for your thoughts @katharmonic

@quilteryoyo, I am thinking of you this morning. I hope all goes smoothly and that we hear from you very soon.
No run last night. I ended up working 2.5 hours late dealing with some audit stuff.4 -
I hope it's an uneventful surgery and a quick and full recovery @quilteryoyo2

Good to know you are on the mend @Faebert
The Spring Phoenix is the last week of my current plan @thisvickyruns and I can't make anything match. I will have a go at some point and fancy the stairway to heaven starting at 1.1 mile, increasing 2 miles per day to finish on 13.1 miles.
Question time : My apple watch is not going to last for long distances and it annoys me that I cannot track my sleep patterns as it has to be charged every night. What recommendations do you have as a replacement?1 -
1-1 5k treadmill + resistance bands
1-2 5k treadmill + yoga
1-3 6k easy
1-4 7k slow + resistance bands
1-5 5k treadmill + yoga
1-6 7k slow + resistance bands
1-7 6k slow + yoga
1-8 5k treadmill + resistance bands
January Total: 46k
January Goal: 140k
Cloudy and high 20sF today. Did treadmill as my "rest."
When you pop in here claiming your December 2021 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
PUT THE FUN BACK IN THE RUN!
Return to a good running weight of 175 lbs (second attempt)3 -

Garmin, all day long. Fenix if it fits your budget, forerunner if not.
Stairway sounds good, but 49 miles in a week is way above my legs capabilities!4 -
@TheMrWobbly I have a Garmin Forerunner 735xt. It's one of the older models, so was cheaper than the flashy new ones, and was specifically created for triathlon (I have yet to try the specific triathlon mode, but it claims to know when you switch activities and automatically changes readings or something, which I thought was mega cool lol).
It counts steps, monitors sleep (thought I don't think it's quite as good at that as my Fitbit used to be, but good enough for basic tracking), monitors HR and gives you your RHR every morning, etc. etc.
I've had it 13 months now, and am having to charge it probably twice a week now, but a lot depends on how much you're using the GPS. It charges in about half an hour so I often just plug it in while I shower.
3 -
@TheMrWobbly I also love my garmin. I have the vivoactive 4s and I love it. I charge it when I shower and that's usually plenty. If I have a really long run and it wasn't well charged beforehand I may need to leave it on the charger for an hour or so to get it back to full.
I also think garmin doesn't do as well with the sleep tracking as fitbit, but it is certainly good enough for basics and it seems to learn over time. The sleep tracking on mine is much more accurate now. When I first got it, it would sometimes register me as asleep when I was sitting too still on the couch watching tv. It took a couple of months and some manual deletion on my part, but it has stopped doing that.1 -
i have garmin too. vivoactive 3. it was considered accurate enough for my doctors to use it for data with my sleep study. i like it.
if you want a longer battery life, i know a lot of ultra runners use Coros0 -
The postman just brought me my @PastorVincent memorial medal causing a few tears to be shed. I just want to thank everyone involved, from memorial run organisers to medal designers to anonymous donors to the post person! God, I miss him.
15 -
@TheMrWobbly I'm a Garmin fan as well. I have a Forerunner 35 and it does everything I need it to do and only requires charging once a week.2
-
@TheMrWobbly I echo Garmin. I got my first one about 2.5 years ago and absolutely live it. I currently have a Vivoactive 4s and like @martaindale I charge a little everyday when in the shower. I LOVE having Bluetooth music (podcasts for me) on my device, and get about 5hrs running time when using music. I believe it's about 12 hrs when not using music. It tracks sleep, though I rarely look at that. Love it.1
-
I will add, the charge while in the shower is a lifesaver. It used to really annoy me charging every 3-4 days but now I have to do a full charge only every couple of weeks with the shower method.1
-
@TheMrWobbly add me to the Garmin lovers list. I have a Forerunner 235 (bought in 2013). It is everything I want in a GPS watch (except I would eventually like to get one that stores music so I don't have to take my phone). It is over 7 years old, but the battery lasts me all week (I only use it when running).1

Oh yes. Glad you are feeling better @faebert. Starting the year with the flu of anytype is TOUGH.I had it in 2018 Jan-Feb and it lasted about 6 weeks before I was back to total normal energy. Take care of yourself and start back slowly. I waited until my resting heartrate was back to where it was normally before pushing
thinking of @quilteryoyo today. My Dad has AAA surgery a long time ago and no sure where q's is but it's a tough surgery. Praying recovery and surgery go smoothly. Glad she got in before there was a rupture!
MrW as far as my apple watch goes. I recently upgraded to the latest one and the battery life is AMAZINGLY better. It was definitely worth the upgrade plus better HR and O2 level now. I basically charge it from say 5 am to 6 am when I get up to take my synthroid and go back to sleep for an hr. My old one would drop from 100 to under 50 on an hour run and this one stays over 80.
PS not sure where I recall but I heard battery life over long term is better if you let them discharge almost to empty and don't constantly charge a little bit at a time. Might be wrong about the latest types tho.2 -
@quilteryoyo Thinking of you today. Prayers.
@TheMrWobbly Another for Garmin (hmmm sensing a pattern) I have the Forerunner 245 and love it.
7.5 Treadmill miles. Cold rainy day. Went slower than usual to make sure the hamstring did not get more aggravated. Still a bit tightness there.5 -
Thanks @hamsterwheel6 @Scott6255 @Avidkeo @Tramboman @martaindale @eleanorhawkins and @thisvickyruns
Suunto it is Currently I have a yearning for a triathlon and whilst I may never do it if I don't buy a watch for the task I will only regret it. I didn't realise there were soooo many watches. Reported there is a new Forerunner 955 out in April and the 945 should be cheaper than than the 745 after that launch so I might hang on until then. Should I consider second hand?2 -
@TheMrWobbly I haven't done it, but I considered buying a "renewed" Garmin through Amazon, which is what they call their refurbished models. I've heard good things but no firsthand experience. I ended up getting a new 645 with music when they were on sale for Amazon Prime days though. I think if you are going to want the triathlon model you should get that one. The older models do get a lot cheaper so if you can wait that might be a deal.

I took the dog out for a walk on the trails and decided I should just run a little bit while I was at it. It was very slow because the trails were icy and the dog was her usual poky, wandering self. Also, I had planned for a walk in the cold, not a run. so I was way overdressed. But anyway, a short jog done.3 -

I've had 2 refurbished units and both worked fine.
In fact, I think they come with full warranties as well.3 -
It's still raining steadily, the river along the edge of which I like to run has burst its banks (nothing new, happens almost every winter, d'oh). After 3 days off running I'm itching to get out there, looking forward to a nice long run in the morning. My husband needs to shut up telling me to just ride the bike in front of the tv, or I might hit him!
The watch topic discussion has reminded me about the triathlon thing... I really REALLY suck at swimming, but I did start thinking about looking into duathlons a few months ago, then forgot all about it. Hmm.
Did I also read in here somewhere about some formal HM every month challenge? I've been informally doing that since October, would like a proper challenge...

@TheMrWobbly another vote for Garmin. I've had a 235 and 630 both refurbished from Amazon which worked very well. I upgraded to a new 245 music model a couple of months ago and love it.3

@eleanorhawkins
this is the half marathon a month challenge that I'm doing that @skippygirlsmom told me about. Not sure if they'll ship internationally.
I signed up for ski school at the same little ski hill I tried out a couple of weeks ago and had my first "lesson" tonight. I went with my running friend who had skied a little but years ago and she was looking for something to do to get out of the house a little more. We were two women in their 40s/50s among a sea of kids, some of whom were literally about knee height to me I swear. We felt really nervous and ridiculous to start but ended up having a great time. They convinced us to try without polls and I was highly skeptical and nervous about it but it was a big game changer for me from the previous attempt. I felt so much more in control not relying on polls I guess. I only fell one time and that was getting off the chair lift, I kind of slid down the hill on my butt.
The lesson itself was pretty minimal and totally not worth it - our instructor was a high school kid who was nice enough but pretty much all he told us was to do the pizza wedge and go for it. I'm not mad about it though, the price for a 6 week school was way cheaper than paying lift fees and rentals and my friend and I have a date on Friday nights for 5 more weeks. Our only regret is that there are no drinks in the lodge after due to COVID. We are hoping that we are both getting vaccinated soon and we can o out and celebrate with drinks after one of our later lessons. And then we're going to have a graduation party at a real mountain.

January Goal: Hike/Run the "A's" *
1/1: 3.39 Afghanistan, Albania
1/2: 2.41 Algeria, Andorra
1/3: 2.05 Angola
1/4 off
1/5 3.25 Antigua (and Barbados)
1/6 gobsmacked by events
1/7 4.02 Argentina
1/8 2.11 Armenia
Total: 17.23
*So, my New Years resolution is to hike all 193 (or 195 depending on your source) countries of the world this year. This could be difficult, since I don’t have a passport. But YouTube to the rescue! I have been using the site to take train “trips” recently, and have found them strangely motivating. Why not the world?

Hey all.
Fun day for me. After a frustrating and long night at work last night, I slept like a log. Was up at 7am because I was being race director for our local Park Run! It was great. I was going to do my 7k long run after but by 930 it was very hot, humid and Busy. Also I was tired. So I canned it, went home, and slept for almost 3hrs instead. Definitely needed!
I decided to try the 14 day trial of Hal, and yep already liking it. Its updated my runs based on what my paces actually are, and has moved my long run to tomorrow, and given me a 5k race challenge. I like this.
Of course I waited too long and now the special offer has passed. So if I decide to pay for the full version, it's $95 for a year. Ouch. Its 11 per month, might do that for a couple of months. And hope for another offer.7 -

$95 for a year ain’t that bad - I pay $360 every two months for a real life person but doubt it’s 22 times better. Do it. Stick with it. Reap the rewards of an awesome result in October!!2 -

Thanks @katharmonic I'll have a look.
My family used to go on skiing holidays every winter when I was small, I got dragged along a few times and sent for lessons and they always took our poles away the same way they often teach you to horse ride without stirrups. I remember a teacher told me if I felt out of control to just sit down. I spent all my time on my *kitten* after that!4
