January 2021 Monthly Running Challenge

Today was a rest day. Tomorrow it is supposed to be 28°F at 5 am and 46°F at lunchtime. I think I will run at lunch. I just can't deal with 28° and dark. I'll only be able to get about 3 miles but it will be a lot nicer weather and I can't do it after work. My mom is going to get the vaccine tomorrow. I'm glad she is getting it, but also a little nervous.7

Beautiful run today. While we were getting ready, it was dreary and I thought it was going to be my least favorite weather - barely above freezing and wet. But then just as we left it started snowing hard. It was too warm to stick on the ground, but coated the branches and leaves quickly, then just as quickly stopped. By the time we got to the far side of the Wolf it was a winter wonderland. We don’t get snow here but maybe once or twice a year usually, and then not much, so even a little bit is an unexpected treat. Even better if it doesn’t ice over and cause all the hopeless local drivers to crash into each other!
We saw one guy at the park, walking, which was honestly one more than I expected, since Memphians are allergic to snow. We passed him as far on opposite sides of the trail as possible and he said, “Which way are you going at the turn?” And we said left. And he said in a gruff voice, “Then I will be going right.” Carry on, antisocial dude!
I love birds in the snow. They were all zooming around and chattering like a neighborhood full of people discussing big news with each other. Did you ever think that many animals born this year are seeing snow for the first time? Like my friends the raccoon family. I saw them trundling along the fence line this evening. The two young ones were born last February!
Our pace was very slow. We dressed too warmly because we wanted to be able to stop and walk and take pictures if we felt like it. Got 7 miles, maybe 4 and a half running.
So, my observation for the day is that sometimes when you set out for a run, it just seems really hard. Your muscles are sore, you’re tired, maybe you have stuff on your mind and things you need to do and the weather is terrible. Sometimes getting out there and running just feels impossible. And one of my favorite moments - one of the main reasons I run - is that moment when your inner voice changes over from, “I can’t do this, this is impossible,” to “And yet, somehow, I did it anyway.” That happens almost every time. But there is another moment, which happens more rarely, which is even better. It’s that moment when you’re out there doing the impossible run and suddenly you realize not only is it possible, it’s magical. Today it was going past a field of cattails where every cattail had its own little cap of snow. It’s not something you can count on. It doesn’t happen every time. It’s rare. But the thing is, if you don’t keep doing the hard thing you will never experience the magical thing. You have to do the hard part so the magical part has a chance to happen.10 -

Monthly question?
1) Dog, cat, fish, reptile or petless? Any favorites?
2) Can you hold a toot in? I swear I'm old. I get the walking farts.
3) Did you do anything nice/outside of yourself today?
4) Do you have a monthly question? I have a million of em' if you don't.
Haha, good questions
1) Guinea pigs. They're sweet, like little cuddly teddy bears, and have personality. We have 2 males + 2 females (in separate cages, much to the males' dismay LOL).
2) I'm still pretty good at this when I want to be.
3) Not yet... still in bed.
4) Nope, yours are great. And it's great seeing you here.
@quilteryoyo got to go home and seems to be doing really well! Yay!
I need to go run now10 -
Thought I would do a quick RED January update. Yesterday's run was the first time I could really feel my legs, so the rest of this week will be the minimum 2 miles, so that I can attempt a HM at the weekend to keep my monthly HM streak going. TBH I wont b too sad if I don't manage it, I don't want to injure myself just for the streak!
01/01 3.6
02/01 2.3
03/01 2.2
04/01 4.2
05/01 2.5

07/01 3.7
08/01 3
09/01 5
10/01 3.1
11/01 4.3
40.1 miles so far. Last time I did RED Jan, in 2019, I did 83.7 miles total with a minimum of 1 mile per run, so I think I'll beat that this time.

@polskagirl01 Great news regarding @quilteryoyo ! I'd been think of her. I hear those guinea pig are wonderful pets. I've never had one or been around one. I think I am missing out! Give em a snuggle for me!
@rheddmobile Love the pictures. you can keep the snow, LOL!3 -
Work taking over again... must run today!
Monthly question?
1) Dog, cat, fish, reptile or petless? Petless, I love animals though just a year without clearing up poo would be nice
2) Can you hold a toot in? I swear I'm old. I get the walking farts. Didn't know we had to!
3) Did you do anything nice/outside of yourself today? Work is taking over again so no
4) Do you have a monthly question? I have a million of em' if you don't. What do you think will change for you this year?1 -

5. What do you think will change for you this year?
1. cats and dogs. I had fish from a boy that lived upstairs from me when I was 13-14. I miss my fish tank but dont miss the maintenance.
2. Yes in the US it is a serious breach of another's personal space to toot. Gas must be NOT eliminated.
3. yesterday I ... uh was nice to the Subway lady and waved traffic through. I communicated to dh that I was too tired to talk thus avoiding the possibility of "you don't care and never listen to me"
4. hehe... daily questions?
5. Love this. This is the year of the VIOLIN! I am on the verge of a monumental step in improvement. Although I am quickly approaching 51 I would like the occasional breakouts to cease. (and the walking farts).4 -
Monthly question?
1) Dog, cat, fish, reptile or petless? Any favorites? Obviously, I'm a dog person. I also have a bearded dragon
2) Can you hold a toot in? definitely.
3) Did you do anything nice/outside of yourself today? does making coffee count?
4) Do you have a monthly question? nope3 -

Monthly question?
1) Dog, cat, fish, reptile or petless? Any favorites? Fish. Love them all except maybe reptiles.
2) Can you hold a toot in? Depends on how long it's required.
3) Did you do anything nice/outside of yourself today? Not yet...
4) Do you have a monthly question? Hard pressed to come up with answers, let alone questions.
When you pop in here claiming your December 2021 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
PUT THE FUN BACK IN THE RUN!
Return to a good running weight of 175 lbs (second attempt)5 -
missed a couple of runs because foster dog had a cold and was having a hard time. lots of a snuggles.
she's still coughing but speed demon and I got out for a couple of miles. legs weren't very happy. but speed demon was all about the run.
we had a dog "charge" us. he only got mad when Speed Demon ignored him.

2) Yes @swenson19d is correct! I absolutely can if I need to.
3) Not yet - the day is new.
4) One of these months I will come up with a good monthly question.
5) Not sure if this is what you were going for with this question, but I am learning Spanish. This year I should learn enough to actually start be able to using it in my actual life.3 -
All I’m so far behind but did read the posts. I’m hard to work all day with my ankle propped up so by the time the day is done I’m off the computer.
@eleanorhawkins the race director the HMs is a friend of mine, they own the local Fleet Feet, if she said $15 she will stick to that. They are awesome folks.
@quilteryoyo glad the surgery went well, prayers for continue and quick recovery
@kgirlhart nice picture of the snow, we got some it was on the grass for half the day, pretty much all gone now. I was so sad not to be able to drive up to Monte Sano and run. My friends were kind enough to send me pictures.
Yuck @rheddmobile on glue traps but beautiful trail pictures
Monthly questions:
1. I have 2 dogs, Macy and Champ
2. Yes, but I noticed as I get older they are getting louder when I don’t
3. I’m assume this means nice for someone else. Yes I have not killed anyone yet today ha ha
4. Nope, you keep asking them
5.
@mbaker566 I hope the dog didn’t get to you. I love seeing your doggy pictures, well and pictures of you too.
Update on me:
My surgery was moved up til tomorrow, I went in to see surgeon yesterday so she could look at the fracture blister and she asked if I wanted to move it up. Oh yes let the healing begin, plus Skip leaves on Sunday for school so it will give me a few more days with someone here. I asked her more about recovery, so basically 6 weeks in the cast, then 1-2 in a boot (which is up to me mostly depending on how I feel), 6 weeks of physical therapy will start after cast comes off. Then I can start to walk when PT starts and add distance to walking. After a month of walking she will let me add in short (like a mile or two the most) slow running a couple days a week. She said when she says full recovery she means what I was doing the day I fell. She said I will be running my Oak Barrel half marathon next April. She said by January I should be racing again. I said trails? She said after you get some comfortable distance walking on the street we can discuss some walking on the baby trails LOL.

@skippygirlsmom That's great news! I'm glad you will at least get a few recovery days with someone around and it sounds like your return to running will be quicker than it originally sounded.3
-
Rock on tomorrow @skippygirlsmom
Didn't feel great today, didn't feel like running - so I ran up the nearest hill, Bo Peep. 1.9km, 440ft, 20% max gradient ranked in the toughest 10 cycle climbs in Sussex. I do actually feel better having done it, though I wouldn't recommend it!
7 -
@skippygirlsmom great news that your surgery is tomorrow and you can begin the recovery process! That timeline sounds more positive and active! Good luck tomorrow and keep us posted when you can. Will be thinking about you!
Also great to hear @quilteryoyo has gone home and is doing well. Hope you are having a good restful day now that you are comfortably in your own home.
Hi Elise! Good to see you and your monthly questions.
1. I am a dog lover, I have a pit poodle mix Stella who is a handful but I love her. I really like cats too but I also can't stand the litter box chore and I decided one type of pet at a time is all I can handle. I don't understand reptiles as pets but I think they are cool animals.
2. Mostly. I'm too repressed to talk about this
3. Not really? I've passed on info to people I thought might need it, but that's the best I've got for today. I donated a bunch of stuff yesterday to the Rescue Mission though.
4. I am not feeling clever enough to come up with a question right now.

@martaindale the doctor's nurse offered to come stay with me for $1,000 a day ha ha. I said I though we were friends.
thanks @katharmonic and @TheMrWobbly5 -
Hope all goes well tomorrow @skippygirlsmom! Glad you are getting it done while Skippy is around to help you.2
-
@skippygirlsmom hope your surgery goes well, the timeline sounds better than it did initially.
I've talked myself out of the HM challenge thing, it's quite a lot of money and there are family things that are more important.
However.... the Runderwear bra I ordered as my birthday present from my mum arrived today. I have never spent that much on a sports bra before... it had better make me run faster when I try it out tomorrow!6 -
@rheddmobile - love the winter wonderland pictures and your description of those special unexpected moments (individual snowcaps on each cattail)!
@mbaker566 - Hope your rescue pup feels better! So glad Speed Demon ignores dogs that charge. Hobbes ignores most of them but sometimes a particular dog (or my internal reaction to them) will set him off.
@skippygirlsmom- that recovery sounds much more reasonable than no running for a year! Glad they were able to move up the surgery and the Skippygirl will be there for a few days after to help you. I think I was dreaming about you and your surgery last night. I woke up thinking about you and if she was still there with you.
@themrwobbly - That is some hill and incline! I hate though when you take a picture and it doesn't at all reflect just how steep the hill is!
I got a run in yesterday, an actual run (more or less)!! I did do run/walk intervals but other than my warm up it was more running than walking. So far other than a little hamstring soreness yesterday afterwards, it feels surprisingly good. Today is a cross training day and tomorrow I will try another slow short run. I had to leave Hobbes at home because it was so hot out (yes that is right So.Hot!). It was near 80F when I got home and so dry again. I need to dig out my hydration vest for even short runs. It is supposed to stay like this and get even hotter in the next few days and through the weekend. We also have the Santa Ana winds coming back so the chance of fires is very high again.
The look you get when you tell your running buddy they have to stay home...

Monthly question?
1) Dog, cat, fish, reptile or petless? Any favorites? Vizsla's which are sort of a dog but crazier 😊 and incredibly velcro and demanding. I actually love most all animals. I worked in a baby zoo and had a tiger cub and a baby gazelle in my care (at home overnight and on weekends actually for several weeks). When our daughter was growing up we had all kinds of animals, guinea pigs (and babies), rats (and babies, 42 in total at one time for a school science fair project. They are great pets, fastidious cleaners, don't smell and are very smart. I have actually thought about getting another one at some point), cats, lizards of all kinds including a chameleon and a fish tank.
2) Can you hold a toot in? I swear I'm old. I get the walking farts. I am much older than you and yes I sometimes get the walking farts too but mostly I can hold them in.
3) Did you do anything nice/outside of yourself today? I had a long phone conversation with a friend who is fighting depression (she is a recovered alcoholic) and is struggling with all the Covid restrictions and missing her friends. She said I was so upbeat she couldn't help but be lifted by talking to me. Before she said that I hadn't realized how much it meant. I will make an effort to reach out to her more often.
4) Do you have a monthly question? I have a million of em' if you don't. I met my monthly question quota with questions about goals and where do you want to be (changes made) at the end of 2021.4 -
Making coffee and not killing anyone or giving them the stink eye counts as something nice in my opinion at least. @katharmonic I donated clothes yesterday too. It was self serving though. I just need to get rid of stuff. I suppose it half counts that I didn't put it in all in the trash. Represses or proper? I'll make up for it...
Why can I not hold a toot? Don't tell me to do kegals, they make my hemorrhoids flare up (hey sorry, you have kids/twins with this genetic make up).3 -
@skippygirlsmom Praying for a successful surgery and a speedy, uncomplicated recovery.2
-
@skippygirlsmom yay for surgery date. Hope it goes well. One thing to note about these fractures, they can be stubborn. Probably why the 1 year time frame. You will get weird swelling and pain that should get better as time goes on.
Monthly questions:
1) Dog, cat, fish, reptile or petless? Any favorites? Cats. All the way. And we have outdoor cats, no poop to worry about.
2) Can you hold a toot in? I swear I'm old. I get the walking farts. Nope I just let loose. We all fart, why should we be embarrassed about it. The number of times a patient has fartes in xray, I barely even notice anymore. Besides, if you hold in a fart, it travels up your spine into your brain and that's where crap ideas come from!
3) Did you do anything nice/outside of yourself today? Just been for a 7k run!
4) Do you have a monthly question? I have a million of em' if you don't. Nope sorry. There were fun!
So 7k this morning. I'm still recovering from my 7 days of 3-11pm shifts in a row, and the busiest Monday night I've ever had. So so tired. So the 7k started well. I took a couple of walking breaks. I must have started out too fast cause my final pace was spot in what I was aiming for. I also did a really good strength session yesterday and am feeling it today!
Work now. I need a holiday. I'm feeling really burnt out. I have 3 weeks off in April. 3 months away. Can't come soon enough.9 -
OH my, I absolutely cannot keep up with yall.. This has to be the fastest moving thread in the west. and east and north and south.
I love reading all the stories tho.
Summer8 -
Today I ran and walked! My total distance was over 3 miles and 1.5 of them were running. I ran 0.5x2 and 0.25x2. Haven’t eaten smart today, so I felt really sluggish. But it was good to get back to running!!7

Oh, @swenson19d my donation was self-serving as well. I'm having a major and much-needed home reorganization spree. I completely emptied and swapped/repurposed two rooms in my house so far. I have a new uncluttered home office and another room that is now a dressing room/extra closet and a workout space. I feel so much better and it is accomplishing one of my 2021 goals of minimizing and decluttering. I still have work to do but I may be able to have people enter my house without dying of shame now.
I'll go with proper
Hey our map is done in the RTW challenge. It's very cool! That's a long route to run, and the ocean crossings are going to be tough. We're currently in France. Looks like we may be ending at @noblsheep's house? We can meet up there8 -

Skimmed all the posts. Lots of great running going on. I am at my mom's for a few days. I hope to retrieve my computer from my house tomorrow afternoon, so I'll be able to comment more. I have a hard time on my phone.
@skippygirlsmom I'm so glad that your surgery got moved up and your recovery is going to be more active than we originally thought. You'll be in my thoughts and prayers tomorrow.
Mom and I went for 2 walks today. We went about 35 minutes and around 1.25 miles. I'll add it up to be more accurate. Even though I was slow, I guess I'll count it on RTW, if that's ok with everyone.

@skippygirlsmom So glad your surgery is scheduled and with @quilteryoyo recovery can proceed!
@swenson19d:
1. 3 dogs, 1 rooster, 13 hens, and a
2. murmuration of semi-tame mynah birds who fearlessly patrol our covered lanai searching for dog cookie crumbs and chatter at us through the screen door when they can't find any. (murmuration because they are in the starling family.....)
3. sometimes yes, other times, no. I have had my share of runner's urgencies due to not knowing for sure....
4. I live in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by huge (20 acre) homesteads-no one else to see (except DH who is always off gentleman farmering). I gave the chickens some freeze dried worms...does that count?
5. your monthly questions are always good!
*So, my New Years resolution is to hike all 193 (or 195 depending on your source) countries of the world this year. This could be difficult, since I don’t have a passport. But YouTube to the rescue! I have been using the site to take train “trips” recently, and have found them strangely motivating. Why not the world?
3 -
@quilteryoyo I'm so impressed that you are already up to that amount of walking, slow or not! Count it! Glad you can stay with your mom for a bit.2
