@quilteryoyo thanks, I'm glad you are recovering too. I just talked to my doctor friend, I took my blood pressure and that is good, she said her daughter had the same issue from the same painkiller so I'm going to stop taking it and take what they gave me in the ER if I need something. I also left a message for my surgeon.5

Not gonna lie, I've been making excuses. At first it was, "I don't have time, blah blah blah" after having my son. Then it became, "Well, I hate running in the winter because treadmills suck and I don't want to slip on ice."
But I've kicked myself in the butt and admitted that all they are are lame excuses. So, I joined a RunBet. Because I hate wasting money.
If I have time to sit on my phone and watch TikTok's, I have time to take a 30 minute run. Especially since my son is now almost old enough to come with me in the running stroller (although I don't want to subject him to the Wisconsin winter's cold quite yet.) I don't have a mileage goal, just to actually take it seriously again.
Also, bit of a tiny update, because I know you all like puppies! This little girl will be my new running partner in a couple of years. She comes home in 5 weeks! ♥ Her name is Millie and she is a standard Australian Shepherd. She will replace my Australian Cattle dog mix as my running partner (only as my running partner, he's not going anywhere!) He's 8 years old and starting to get arthritis, so I want to retire him soon. My mini Aussie will still be running with us, but she's small, and I feel safer having a) two dogs with me and b) one of them being of decent size.
Only thing better than shoe porn and cake porn and injury porn is puppy porn.
My immediate thought after reading that last sentence was 'we have a serious problem in here' LOL9 -

This morning the temp warmed up a couple degrees to 30F. Yesterday it was 28F but we had that freezing fog to run through so today seemed much warmer.
Thanks for the well-wishes on my ankle. @quilteryoyo I had not mentioned it on here. I think I was in denial and putting it in black and white made it not be real! BTW, glad you are doing so good with recovery.
@skippygirlsmom – so glad you are doing well and have such great caregivers. Between the anesthesia from surgery and medicine that you aren’t used to, it can really mess up your body. Hope you get the dizziness under control soon.
@kgirlhart – gotta love new shoes!
@polskagirl01 – if you decide you can’t do without winter, I will be glad to send you mine! Nice views from the top of that hill. Hope you enjoy running in the new place just as much. Are the kids stressed about changing schools and leaving their friends behind? I remember it being hard to be the new kid in school.
@brittanystebbins95 – welcome back and those puppies are so darn cute!!!
@katharmonic – that’s a great idea of being “hosts” when the challenge comes to our area!
@SummerSkier – I’m more of an early morning runner also. Thankfully, I can usually find someone to run with that keeps me accountable on those cold mornings when I don’t want to go out in the cold and darkness.
Upcoming Races/Challenges:
CRAW (Circumpolar Race Around the World)
Run the World Challenge
Desert Storm 218 Miler Challenge (Jan 17 – Feb 28)
Peyton’s Wild n Wacky 50k (March 13)
Cooper River 10k (Sept 25)
Marine Corps Marathon (Oct 31)
Cade’s Cove Loop Lope (Nov 14)

OK! So, I am still here. Struggling with depression (SAD), as well as treading water of life, doing my best not to weird out, grasping at some semblance of living, giving up on making sense of day to day 'stuff', decreasing screen time, drastically to ease anxiety, desperately hanging on to MFP as my only form of control to life!
all that equals: I am here, and still on the run!18 -
So much to comment on!
@skippygirlsmom so glad your surgery went well. Hope you can get the dizziness sorted out. Meds could certainly do that. I'm glad you have Skippy and your friends to help. Let them take care of you right now.
@quilteryoyo so glad you are continuing to recover. Visual migraines don't sound fun though so I hope that goes away soon.
Nice new shoes @kgirlhart.
@SummerSkier good list of things that affect pace. Pretty much every variable there is! I don't think I saw hormones on there but I'm sure that is a factor along with water retention, things like that. How long are your runs when you do twice a day runs? I get tempted to do that sometimes during training but I don't want to change clothes and shower that many times a day
@polskagirl01 love that photo series. So glad you were able to complete it.
@brittanystebbins95 PUPPIES!!! OMG I really want to pick up that whole pile. Looks like you picked out a cute one. I hope you will have a wonderful running buddy. You are a brave woman to add a new puppy so soon after a new baby. And getting yourself out there and running again - good for you.
@AlphaHowls I'm so sorry you are struggling with SAD. You are an amazing and very strong person and I really hope that the running and checking in is helpful to you, but please reach out if that's not enough and take good care of yourself. Hugs to you.8 -

The week just didn't turn out as planned on many fronts and I'm feeling kind of bummed about it. I have to cancel my ski lesson tonight and probably my class at the gym and long run with friends tomorrow. I should have tried to do the long run today but I just didn't have it in me to do it on my own. I finally went out around 4 pm and just did the 3 miles, which did not feel too bad. Hopefully I'll get something medium length done tomorrow or Sunday.
I've scheduled a zoom happy hour with a couple of friends tonight so I'm sure that will cheer me up and put a better spin on the weekend. In the big scheme of things all is well so I'm sure some wine and some whining will set things right.9 -
@skippygirlsmom I'm glad your surgery went well and you have Skippy and your friends to help take care of you. I hope the med switch is the fix for your dizziness.
@quilteryoyo I'm happy to hear you are recovering well. I hope your migraines stop soon!
@kgirlhart Yay new shoes!
@SummerSkier I have never once been tempted to run twice in a day. I know there are some people on here that do it. Like @Camaramandy648 . Speaking of which, haven't heard from her in a while.
@polskagirl01 It's so cool that you have all the seasons from that spot. Such a neat idea. Here I think they would all look alike.
@brittanystebbins95 So many cute puppies! Good job taking the first step to getting back to running.
@AlphaHowls Sorry to hear the SAD is getting you down. You know we will be here, ready to chat away!
@katharmonic I'm sorry you had a rough week. A little wine and whine sounds like just the ticket!

Hey all. Lots going on! Whew.
Hugs to @AlphaHowls. SAD days can be hard. We are here for you.
Well it's 3pm. I've been up since 530am. Did my 11.5k in 1hr 12 minutes. Hal was very pleased! So was I. And it was perfect timing to set up for Parkrun, which went really well. Then went to a kids birthday party for some friends, then out to lunch, visited the local free community zoo. Whew. I'm finally home with my feet up. I'm tired!
Still very happy with this mornings effort. The run felt great, I felt like I could have kept going, though were getting some sore muscles. Tomorrow will be stretching. I definitely need it.10 -
@AlphaHowls Oh me too with the SAD. One thing that helped was having really bright lights in my bathroom. I sit in there with blinding bright daylight bulbs for ten fifteen minutes when I first wake up and it seems to help, as does getting out in sunlight first thing when there is any. I hope you feel better soon.
I’m currently kind of depressed over losing my cat, and also someone flattened one of the raccoon family with a car. There’s a big patch of woods which nearly backs on to my house with a road between us and the woods and someone hit him, poor little guy. It’s been a long lonely year and watching him grow up made my days brighter. I’m hoping for brighter days soon for everyone!
Re: the winter race series. I have decided not to do the virtual series. There are only 20 people signed up for it, no medal, and I don’t like the shirt. I still feel bad about missing the in-person, but honestly, it’s insane. We just got word from our health department that people should even not be going to the pharmacy or shopping for groceries - if you are still doing these things, switch to delivery if possible. Cases here are sky high. And there are enough people signed up for the race that even if everyone was perfectly spread out over the whole start time there would be only 20 seconds between runners.
Nevertheless I’m going to run the distances privately and unofficially so I can compare them. It turns out I am not going to be able to safely run the official 3k course before the deadline (too crowded on weekends, it goes right through the most trafficked part of Shelby Farms), and for that matter I don’t want to try to race on trails at my usual place across the river on weekends because too many horses. I should have planned ahead and done it last Tuesday.
So I’m planning to do a fast 3k on roads Saturday, then do the official course next Monday so I can see what my time is compared to the people who run it in person.11 -
Somewhere around 62 miles.
It was basically 80° when I went. It was gross.6 -
I went on a nice snowy run today. I went a total of 2.42 miles and 1.03 of them were running. I wanted to run more, but the uneven snow was aggravating an old injury. I tore two ligaments in my ankle in 2018 (I think I did it the year before that too but it didn’t get officially diagnosed) and my ankle continues to act up sometimes. I should have thought to wear my brace but didn’t, oh well11

A quick unscheduled run this morning. It's Mums birthday today so our family was meeting for brunch so I knew I needed some extra calories! I had delicious brioche French toast with bacon, banana and berries - it was devine, the picture doesn't do it justice.
@polskagirl01 The snow pictures are gorgeous
@Tramboman Impressive on keeping count of your strides! Usually when I try to do that I lose count after a few hundred

*So, my New Years resolution is to hike all 193 (or 195 depending on your source) countries of the world this year. This could be difficult, since I don’t have a passport. But YouTube to the rescue! I have been using the site to take train “trips” recently, and have found them strangely motivating. Why not the world?

@polskagirl01 – if you decide you can’t do without winter, I will be glad to send you mine! Nice views from the top of that hill. Hope you enjoy running in the new place just as much. Are the kids stressed about changing schools and leaving their friends behind? I remember it being hard to be the new kid in school.
@AlphaHowls I agree with the advice above about the bright lights. I have a SAD light and just a few minutes in the morning helps. I also take Vitamin D over the winter months. But I'm sure you know that sometimes even with all of the things, it's still just HARD. Sending virtual hugs your way as you get through the dark days (with a little more sunshine every day now).
I ran in the snowy woods today. It was great, and lots of other people were out enjoying it too. Got my 40 km for the week!
January Goal 169k
"40 weeks of 40K" - 10 Weeks DONE! / 41 weeks left to complete the challenge

@skippygirlsmom I hope changing up the medicine is all you need.
@AlphaHowls We are here for you. Praying things ease up a little bit every day. There's so much going on in general these days that when other things get thrown in on top, it's hard to deal.
@katharmonic I hope the virtual happy hour helped and you are feeling much better today.
@Avidkeo Sounds like you had a very busy, but good day. That was a great time on your run! You're awesome.
@rheddmobile Sounds like you are making wise decisions. The numbers here are finally going down, but they think it may be just because people aren't getting tested and are just staying home if they "know" they have IT. I personally know some people who did that. It's pretty scary, so glad you have a good plan to stay safe. Sorry about the racoon. I hate seeing animals that have been run over in general. I'd be really sad if it were one I had watched grow up, so hugs to you.
@libbyralls Nice run. Love the beautiful pictures.
@kirstymn I'd run for that! Looks delicious!
@HonuNui Sorry the conditions weren't safe. Glad you didn't take any unsafe chances. Love the begging bird. What do you feed it?
@polskagirl01 I hope your kids handle the transition well. It sounds like the new school is doing their best make it as easy as possible for them. I hadn't thought about how lonely it could be for kids who move and then have virtual learning and all this social distancing. That would be so hard to make new friends. I hope that is not the case for your children.
I have been doing the prescribed walking. The doctor said 30 minutes of ambulation per day. I'm assuming that means "at least 30 minutes." Yesterday I walked 48 minutes - going 2 miles. Today is going to be really cold, so I will try to walk on mom's treadmill. I prefer outside, but don't want to do too much in the cold air.
8 -
@katharmonic I don't think I saw hormones on there but I'm sure that is a factor along with water retention, things like that. How long are your runs when you do twice a day runs? I get tempted to do that sometimes during training but I don't want to change clothes and shower that many times a day
That's a good one. I didn't think of it. Not sure why. I guess I should also add sex to the list as I can remember that used to be (not sure if coaches still tell people that) something not to do before a race or competition. Oh heck I guess EVERYTHING effects pace.
@martaindale if you had asked me last year I would also never have said 2 a day runs would ever be a thing. And especially not in the summer here. But with WFH and it being "winter" in Tx it's not a stretch. I already was doing a run early, than a walk mid morning of 20-30 minutes and one in the afternoon of the same (trying to get myself UP from my computer) so when things got too hectic at work with zooms in the morning it seemed extra bang for the buck for add a few miles at lunch. They are NOT long runs. Just 2-4 max but really the mileage adds up if I already did 4-6 in the morning. I must say that it is definitely not the same as just doing a longer run in the morning as far as effort.
@alphahowls I totally get the SAD also but the good news is daylight IS getting stronger and longer in the evenings. I try to look forward to my purple martin scouts showing up mid Feb and also I see many of my annual bulbs starting to poke through the ground. That is some SERIOUS mileage you run daily ... WOW!!!
AS far as shoe porn! bring it on. I think I spent more money on kicks the past 2 years than I spent on any other clothes... damn addiction.
summerinAustin7 -
@AlphaHowls Sorry you are dealing with SAD. I too recommend getting one of the lights if you don’t have one. Days are gradually getting a bit longer, so hopefully you’ll start feeling ether soon.
@kirstymn That looks delicious!
Yesterday, I took the dogs for a short walk (they are both elderly, so a half mile is all they can handle), and then I went to one of the parks and ran 5.3 miles. It is pretty chilly today, so I think I may go to the gym and do some sort of treadmill ladder workout and some weights.7 -

Mostly cloudy, low 30s F with little wind today. Had music in my head today: "March of the Wooden Toy Soldiers."
@AlphaHowls Those full spectrum lights helped my wife with her SAD.
@kirstymn First food porn of the year. Congratulations!
When you pop in here claiming your December 2021 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
PUT THE FUN BACK IN THE RUN!
Return to a good running weight of 175 lbs (second attempt)7 -
Good to have you both on the mend @skippygirlsmom and @quilteryoyo and here's hoping the after-effects are over quickly.
I feel like I am totally wussing out with just the rain @polskagirl01 though your run looks more fun!
That's what we are here for @AlphaHowls and you have to know just how much of an inspiration you and so close to the big 1,000 days! Weird world right now though all the better for people like you 😊
Darn @kirstymn my mouth is watering right now!
Good see see you getting the miles in @marisap2010 I have two dogs exactly the same, if you take them too far they just lie down and that's it!
Got a park run in today as it was raining a bit too much for a long run up the hills.6 -
I finally got caught up reading here. There is way too much to comment to everyone, but I gave lots of likes and hugs.
Thanks for all the comments on my shoes. I think they are really pretty. The lighting in the picture isn't very good. I can't wait to try them out tomorrow.
I'm so sorry that things are so bad there @rheddmobile. Our local cases are pretty high here and so many people just don't take it seriously. They have started giving vaccines though and my mom, who is 76 and has COPD, got her first one on Tuesday. I think my sisters who work at the schools will be able to get them soon. I will be at the bottom of the list, but I am more concerned about spreading it than having it, so as long as my Mom gets the vaccine I don't mind waiting. I mostly want it to protect others.
@TheMrWobbly I love the pictures you are posting of our progress on RTW. I looked at the map and it looks like it runs about 8-10 miles north of my house. I am going to drive out that way and see if there is any good/safe roads to run out there and I can definitely get some pictures. They will probably just be of cows or pumpjacks.
@quilteryoyo You are doing great! And @skippygirlsmom I hope the medication change helps.
@AlphaHowls I hope you het to feeling better soon. I hate gray skies. I sometimes think that the people around me don't really understand how much a lack of sunshine affects my mood.
@marisap2010 My dogs are elderly too, 10 and 13, and they just can't walk as much as they used too. There is a park half a mile from my house that we used to walk to and then walk on the walking trail and then walk home, but now I have to load them in the car and drive there because it is too much for them to walk there and back.9 -
Excellent work by the Run the World challenge team going past 1,000 miles. We went through southern Belgium and past the Scourmont Abbey where Trappist monks brew one of my favourite beers, Chimay

My mini Aussie will still be running with us, but she's small, and I feel safer having a) two dogs with me and b) one of them being of decent size.

@thisvickyruns pictures and gory details of injuries. Bonus points for providing x-rays!
@Tramboman I must admit I'd had my suspicions for a while :-p

OMG, @kristymn that looks so good. You're speaking my language there, if you add a bloody mary I'm in brunch heaven.
@TheMrWobbly I would stop and have a beer with you! I really like Belgian ales as well.
Thanks all, happy hour last night was a big help and I'm feeling much better today.
And now I feel like I may have a problem, with all three of my points above relating to alcohol in a thread ostensibly about running.

I didn't think I was going to be able to meet up today for a run, but things changed last minute and I was able to get out for 5 miles. It was a beautiful snowy morning. Not too cold, big flakes of snow, just gorgeous. A little slush and wet but not terrible footing with trail shoes on.

Lol im the resident radiographer so these guys have learned that I LOVE looking at xrays. Though I guess that's weird when you get your xrays "can I get a pic of this so I can show to my online running group..."
Some radiographers will happily let you take pics, others not so much.
But hey, that's who I am lol.4
