My husband and I ran the second race of our homegrown series today! We went to Shelby Farms and attempted to run the 3k course of the Winter Off-road series. I say βattemptedβ because the course was completely unmarked and not on any of the official trails, presumably because they wanted to avoid other park users. We had expected that 700 runners the day before would have churned up the ground well enough to see where to go, but itβs dry and the ground is hard, so no signs of runners!
So we were out there guessing where to go on trails we had never been on, based on a rough map, at full speed! We overlaid our Strava run on the course map after we got home and for the most part it looks like we were pretty close. Since in the past the series maps havenβt exactly matched what was run on the day there is always an element of mystery, but I feel like we ran 3k in conditions similar enough to the official race that I can compare my time to the results and get an idea of how I would have done.
We finished in 19:43, which would have put me 3rd in my AG yesterday. There are two ladies in my AG who ran very similar times to mine in last yearβs series, so I was using them as a benchmark. The faster of them ran 19:44. So, pretty much right on as far as what I expected from myself.
Weather was lovely - nice bright sun, a few clouds, and a HOWLING WIND ARE YOU KIDDING? seriously I got out of the car, decided not to wear sleeves since it was so nice, and then the wind whipped my cheeks red before we reached the start line! It was supposed to be 11 mph but Iβm guessing more like 25. Fortunately the wind was mostly behind us, and maybe even gave us a little boost.
Iβm not sure we would have done this today had I remembered that it was a holiday. Even running on unmarked trails, we had to cross the marked trails in several places, and there were swarms of people everywhere. Twice we literally had to stop and wait on dawdlers to move along so we wouldnβt have to get within touching distance of them. And once a large family of young children decided it would be fun to race alongside us. Which was fun, but seriously, no, go away. It turns out I can outrun a bunch of gradeschoolers, who knew?
We did have fun! Next up, 5k.
When we were trying to figure out where the course went, we noticed there were little flags which we thought might be trail markers for the race. They are not. I donβt think. This one said, βHippie Van.β10 -
No running. Just wanted to pop in.
@Avidkeo @Teresa502 @Scott6255 and whoever else I missed, hope everyone gets some rest soon.
@quilteryoyo Sounds like you're doing great.
@Camaramandy648 You're awesome as always, good luck on the job.
@AlphaHowls @TheMrWobbly Glad you're OK!
@marisap2010 @rheddmobile Congrats on your races!
@eleanorhawkins If you started dualthalon training, then theoretically the cycling would burn calories too. But I get super hungry when I'm biking my commute, so might work both ways.
Didn't know where to put this but I kinda wanted to vent and y'all are wonderful and really care, so...I've been pretty down for a while, and outside of work it's just been hard to go anywhere or do anything. Last week I finally decided to suck it up and go to a doc. Talk therapy really isn't a thing where I am so meds were the only way to go. Well I had expected the meds to have some bad side effects but these pills just chewed me up and spit me back out. Took them before bed then spent the night having OCD nightmares about how I had to light up every single tile in a room (and I don't even have OCD), plus heartburn, plus elevated HR, plus not much sleep. Yeah that was fun. I can see why some kids take these as recreational drugs. By the afternoon I was sporting a fever and decided the meds route is not for me.
That was Sunday. Today I'm finally not feeling like microwaved *kitten*. No more pills. Suppose the only thing left is to just... pull myself out of it best I can. Or die trying. Rant over. Sorry guys.19 -
@noblsheep Garmin reckons I burn half the calories cycling that I burn running. Guess I don't do it hard enough π
Some of those meds are awful. When I was on anti-depressants I was a zombie, so spaced out. Don't know if you've ever used 7cups.com, I have found it helpful at times when I've needed to get stuff off my chest. Plus, of course, always here if you need a chat in the silly hours.4 -
Mind over matter run today. Iβm on holiday with my girls, staying at my sisterβs bach (holiday cottage) and my 8 year old woke at 11:30 with terrible hay fever, just as I was dozing off (were in a room together). As she had already had an antihistamine I tried to soothe her back to sleep but she keep sneezing, then crying. After an hour or so I gave her another antihistamine and she finally fell asleep next to me at around 3am. Naturally, she woke bright as a button at 6:10 and wanted to get up and going. With no option to snooze and the day promising to be hot, I put on my shoes and headed out for an hour of hills (this island is tiny and hills are the only option). I had to keep telling myself that while I felt tired, I had actually been resting for eight hours so physically I should be fine. Seemed to work and I enjoyed my run.
I will confess to having a two hour nap this afternoon - I needed it desperately. My daughter seemed unaffected by the whole scenario. Needless to say, I went to the pharmacy this morning for some stronger antihistamines for her so we donβt get a repeat tonight. Wish me luck!11 -
@noblsheep I know that therapy isnβt so commonplace where you are, but I would recommend looking online to see if there is some sort of Zoom type or even chat type counseling available. As a therapist, I say that with some hesitation because I think that there is definitely a difference between in person contact vs virtual (my research in school was on the drawbacks of computer-mediated communication, but that was also almost 20 years ago when technology was not so great), but I think it could be better than nothing, especially if you are having such adverse response to medication.8
-
Glad things are going so well for you right now @Avidkeo . It's great when you love your training plan. Enjoy your mom while she's there.
@katharmonic That looks like a lovely, albeit cold, place to run. Speed Demon does look happy to be "in charge." Congrats on your PB bench press! That's awesome.
@rheddmobile You did great on your race and keeping close to the actual course. Third in your AG is nothing to sneeze at! Love that you outran the group of grade-schoolers. LOL
I'm sorry you are having such a hard time @noblsheep ! Sometimes the "cure" is worse than what ails you. I don't know if it would help or not, but I journal everyday. It really helps me when I am depressed - able to get my feelings out and work through them. And, please feel free to rant at us anytime. We do care.
@ContraryMaryMary Fingers crossed that the stronger antihistamines will work for your daughter. Good for you for getting out and doing hills after not having much sleep. Enjoy the rest of your holiday.

Cloudy, cold, and snowy again today, so used the treadmill. Felt good, so I went a little farther than usual.
Just 2 more weeks until the groundhog tells us we're having 6 more weeks of winter or 5 weeks and 6 days more of winter.
Hugs and prayers for those struggling with issues.
When you pop in here claiming your December 2021 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
PUT THE FUN BACK IN THE RUN!
Return to a good running weight of 175 lbs (second attempt)6 -
@noblsheep I feel for you. I know it is hard to adjust to the meds and to figure out if you need to try something different or ride it out. There are a lot of different options but I understand not wanting to go that route any more. I haven't tried the online counseling but as suggested that might be a help to you. Hugs and hang in there. We're here.
Sorry about your rough night @ContraryMaryMary. Hope your daughter does better tonight with the antihistimines.
@quilteryoyo thanks, but mine is Stella, not the adorable Speed Demon Very much not. Ha!

I also did not sleep well last night but for no good reason. It felt like I barely slept at all but of course I was sound asleep when the alarm went off at 6. I snoozed until the last possible minute then headed to the gym for yoga class. I got 1 mile warmup on the treadmill before it, and then did 2 miles after. I skipped strength class because that felt like way too much on so little sleep. I foresee a nap later today too or a very early bedtime. Or both.6 -

Went out yesterday morning for some pace work then went for a 5 miles hike with the family. We are working our mileage up to a distance where we can hike the Lone Star Hiking Trail in segments. It's 90 something miles total and ends an hour drive or so from our house. We did an out and back of a little over 5 miles and my daughter was totally fine. She can definitely go farther, especially if we keep the pace down and bring snacks. To be fair, I needed a snack too. I think our next hike will be the last segment of the trail. We are working it backwards. That segment is just under 6 miles, so we will take 2 cars, park one at the end and drive the other to the beginning. We are enjoying the family hikes and it's a fun way to spend a chunk of the weekend without being around other people.11 -

Well it looks like Jan isn't much fun all around - good job we have our running to keep us going. I haven't slept well this week though I know my reason which is work related, now over and we move on - think I might have one of those afternoon naps @ContraryMaryMary π
Now come on @noblsheep that wasn't much of rant - give it some, we are good for it!
On the other hand that looks like you did have fun @rheddmobile
OH MY WORD @Camaramandy648 I just had time to actually read the last few days. 100 MILES!!! Three words A MAZE ZING! You just rock it. I have no words π
The RtW2021 Challenge is almost on track (only 9 miles behind) and places still available. We zoomed through London and down the Mall past the site we hope @thisvickyruns will be going past later this year
Waved at @Faebert (no cup of tea on offer though!) on the way through over the roundabout at Buck P and head of down the A23 toward Brighton. I love the spirit of Brighton where everyone is accepted as who they are unless you are a *kitten*. Brighton's latest magnificent glory is the BA360 This was recently described by a local comedian as (do not open if you are offended by sexual references)"Celebrating Brighton's free love community by making a giant c*ck ring go up and down a 531 ft phallus all day long"
We sprinted off along the South Downs so I just ran up the nearest peak I could to celebrate only to find I had left my phone on charge so here is someone else's picture
We are here for anyone who is struggling and wants to vent, if you don't want to go public then drop me a friend request. It is doubtful I can solve your problems but I can listen to you, from my IT days I am a good 'Rubber Duck'8 -
@AlphaHowls Ouch, I hope you're feeling better after your fall
@polskagirl01 -19Β°C!! Now that is cold! I don't think it has ever dropped below 4Β°C where I live and that has me bundled up and firmly indoors
@elearnorhawkins Love the positive attitude and great job running on stones - that's not easy!
@Faebert Hope you're feeling better after the tooth extraction
@katharmonic WTG on the bench press PB!
@rheddmobile Fantastic job on the 3k race
@noblsheep Hugs to you x Those meds sound awful
@ContraryMaryMary I hope the new antihistamines worked. I'm jealous of your Waiheke holiday
@martaindale Those family hikes sound wonderful2 -

I had an unscheduled rest day yesterday. It was just one of those days where I couldn't be bothered. I was tired and unmotivated so I just took the day off. Thankfully I have my mojo back this morning and was up before 4am to get my run in nice and early. I love running really early when the roads are deserted and it's pitch black.
I got to try out my new headlamp which worked very well. Usually I just have clip on lights or a hand held torch, but I had some loyalty points to cash in and saw the headlamp so decided to try it out - that way I wasn't wasting any actual money if I didn't like it.5 -

Bwahahaha I foresee a good example of 'careful what you wish for' approaching!
Brighton isn't far from where I spent my first 10 and a half years of life. We used to love going down there to look at the hippies π
Visited a few years ago and I must say that description of the tall thing is pretty good!
I also have plenty of memories of walks on the South Downs with my dad, including one where we got lost and ended up having to crawl under barbed wire fences. There was usually an ice cream van in the car park. Mmmm, good old fashioned ice cream with a flake. Good times.
Brighton is also where Dad is being treated now. He finishes radiotherapy on Friday and will be starting chemo soon.
If I can get over there to see him this year I'll definitely be trying to head up the downs for a run.11 -

I didn't have time for a longer run today, and it was -17Β°C (warming up, should be back to "normal" tomorrow) and with all sorts of air quality warnings. I had errands to do within a mile from home, so just ran there for 2 km total and decided that was enough. It was snowing and very pretty.
Great running, everyone! I gave you "likes" and "hugs"10 -
Hey all. Whew chatty last night haha.
@TheMrWobbly loving the updates! Absolutely fantastic, thank you.
I got out the door at 730am for my 7k base run. It's a horrible day here, feels like winter, not the middle of summer. It's cool (not cold but definitely cooler), windy and rainy.
Somehow though I managed to avoid the rain and wind. Literally. As I got up there was some thunder, and heavy rain. I shrugged, said you can't predict the weather on race day, and laced up my shoes. As I opened the door the rain stopped and the wind died down. Ok. Weird. I went out for my 7k route, and no rain. Very little wind. Got home, stepped inside, and the heavens opened up! Very odd. But I'll take it! I am an odd one that likes running in the rain, but not that keen on wind.
So 7k in the bag! My headphones battery died at 4k. Not as annoying as I thought it would be. And I managed to get further up my monster hill! Yay progress! I had been able to run up this before my injury in June, so it's my current work in progress.
Going out for lunch again today - time with the kids and mum on holiday. And then work again at 3pm. So currently just chilling.10 -
@katharmonic My apologies to Stella! I'm horrible with names, human and otherwise apparently. Hope you manage to sleep better tonight!
@martaindale Yeah for the family hikes. Making memories to last a lifetime.
@eleanorhawkins I hope you get to see your dad this summer. How is he doing?
@Avidkeo Nice. I would be thankful to have missed the rain. I don't like wet shoes/socks. Yeah for making progress on your monster hill. You'll make it to the top again before you know it.
I walked to my mom's and back today, plus some extra. I spent about 3 hours with her - paying a bill, balancing the checkbook, talking to neighbor's that stopped by, and finishing up and starting another jigsaw puzzle. I'm glad I live close enough that I can walk, since I can't drive right now. I intentionally walked a total of 2.1 miles today.
