Cloudy and low 40s F today, so instead of digging out warmer running gear, I just ran on the treadmill. Listened to '80s workout music; and I received a deep question to ponder: did Rick James borrow "Superfreak" from MC Hammer, or did MC Hammer borrow "U Can't Touch This" from Rick James?
When you pop in here claiming your December 2021 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
PUT THE FUN BACK IN THE RUN!
Return to a good running weight of 175 lbs (second attempt)
Asked and answered...thanks for the info.

Coyotes - one good thing is that they live in groups but typically hunt solo or in pairs. I have seen them hunting rabbits and squirrels along the river bed here and they are typically in pairs. One will flush and the other will chase and grab whatever they are hunting. Ours are not really afraid of people but they are definitely cautious. I guess when you consider this area is pretty urban/suburban they have to be tolerant of people always being around and we are regularly warned to keep their pets inside especially at night. Everyone has block walls mostly around their yards but the coyotes can easily jump them.
@swenson19d - I hope the coyote was frightened away and your kitty is ok!
@emptydog - I have a murmur too. Have had it since I was a kid as a result of rheumatic fever. It is also what caused my very low HR and ultimate need for a pacemaker. It is a good thing to have monitored regularly especially by a doctor who is also an athlete. My cardiologist told me that I would eventually need to have the PM or something similar but to keep doing what I was doing, I would know when something needed to be done and he was right.
@tramboman - I confess I had to look up the songs to see who sang/wrote what. It is interesting that they were both involved in 'You Can't Touch This'. So @WhatMeRunning is somewhat correct.
I got a run in early yesterday and it was awesome - cool and overcast. I actually got up, got dressed and out the door without sitting down to look at email or to eat anything. I was under time constraint and motivated to get the run in. We had the housekeeper coming and wanted to be out before she came because she is afraid of Hobbes the Vizsla. We took him to a dog park for about an hour and then drove to San Diego to visit his breeder who also has his brother and nephew. I haven't seen him this excited in a long time. We walked their property (vineyard, orange grove and huge field that usually has cows) while the pups just ran and ran. We had lunch and they all played until they were exhausted. Then he slept all the way home 😂Hobbes (in front) with his brother Teak and nephew Tanner in the distance

Thanks @emptydog . Its from the last race I ran - in Dec of 2020. I got to meet @Teresa502 there. So fun.
@rb3551 You are doing great.
@Tramboman I hear you with choosing the treadmill. Glad it was an awful experience for you.
@katharmonic Glad the sad songs helped. Did you have a good cry too? That is usually what make me feel better. Great run.

Ooops. Looks like I'm a bit behind on my mileage. Hopefully I can make it up.
My back is feeling better today, but, I can still feel tightness. Because I didn't rest it yesterday, I decided to today and walk rather than my planned run. I was going to walk on the treadmill so I wouldn't have all of the hills from walking on the driveway, but Tippy kept coming to the door and looking in with those sad puppy dog eyes, so I gave in and walked outside. She did two laps, on leash, and was done. LOL Then, after a brief rest, she was off to explore in the neighbor's field while I finished. I did those 2 miles at an average 3.9 mph pace. I plan to try running tomorrow.5 -

Felt really strong on today's run and ran my HR up just a little more during the last couple run portions in the last 1/4 mile, which I think accounted for a lot of the extra distance. Rest day tomorrow for me. Happy Friday everyone!
Very nice 5k time there @sweetdaisy13

Thank you @WhatMeRunning. I wasn't sure I wanted to go, but time was short and I made myself.
I have my first Covid Vaccine tomorrow so know I can't run for a few days if I have any side effects, so did a short run whilst I could.3 -
Nice runs @sweetdaisy13 and @WhatMeRunning !
Good luck with your CoVID shot @sweetdaisy13 . I have now had both and the day I got them. I just had a sore arm. Mom did get a little bit of CoVID arm last night, 4 days later, but it was better today.

Thank you @quilteryoyo. Going to see how I feel afterwards, but will be sensible.2

@shanaberIt is a good thing to have monitored regularly especially by a doctor who is also an athlete.
Yes. When I was telling him about how I ran and the plans I had, he understood what I was talking about.
5.15 miles, 40F, this morning. I ran at the lakefront park. Saw the first heron of the year. Tried to take a picture but he flew off while I was trying to get my phone. It started to rain about halfway. Very few people were around and it was a pleasure to be running in the rain.
Today: 5.15 miles.
April total: 28.29 miles.7 -
@shanaber Hobbes looks like he’s having so much fun!
10k at Shelby Farms last night - my husband and I are continuing to return to the places we used to go now that we are a week from being fully vaccinated. We gave up on Shelby Farms a year ago when it just got swarmed with people during lockdown. No lockdown now but it’s still swarmed! Like, “Excuse me, excuse me, on your left, ON YOUR LEFT PLEASE!!!!” Large families of walkers side by side across the entire path. And then getting run over by speed cyclists in full race kit. Sometimes both at once. Actually most of the cyclists were pretty cool, friendly and gave plenty of warning, I think they appreciated that we got over single file when we heard them coming, UNLIKE EVERYBODY ELSE! Geez.
Anyway we have missed running there. It’s fairly hilly for Memphis and we used to enjoy doing races there because we would hit the hills and the other racers would audibly groan and we would be like, “Haha, we trained here!” and just trot straight up. Or not, there are actually a couple of short hills which are steep enough that I make better time during a race walking them and saving my energy for later. In any case, we have not been running nearly enough hills recently. Thought we were gonna lay down in the middle of the road and just give up about mile 5. But we got it done, and hopefully next week it will be easier!
We park over near the riding stables and walk over to look at the horses after running. I vaguely remember reading once upon a time that the University of Memphis has a program studying horse color genetics using the horses there. I am going to have to look it up, because I never saw so many colors in one field. There’s appaloosas, black blanket, red blanket, varnish, leopard spotted, various types of pinto, buckskin, palomino, Isabella, red road and blue roan, gray, bay, wild type bay with huge amounts of pangare, chestnut, and I feel like I’m forgetting some. Tried to take pictures but at any distance my camera makes horses look like little dots. In the same field, also a donkey and 21 deer!7 -
@quilteryoyo - oh yes, a good cleansing cry as well. Very therapeutic.
@rheddmobile how cool. I would love to see all those different colored horses. So beautiful.

I ran in the cold rain for the third time this week, which has gotten a little old. My friend and I felt proud of ourselves for running in the rain on a Friday after work. But seriously, I'm well over it now. Sunday fortunately looks better for my HM.6 -

I had a good catch up with my coach yesterday, working out a plan for the rest of the year. I will be working towards a new PB at the Auckland Half on October 31 (see you there @avidkeo) but in the interim, we're going to do a bit of work on my 10k race pace - looking to set a blistering new PB at the end of July. All my 5k and 10k PBs have been set during half marathons, so surely I can go faster, right?
I'm also entered in my first marathon, a trail run on August 8, which I'm told is now an ultra as they've changed the course and it's now 45km. I'm not sure how I feel about that. Well, I do, actually: Very apprehensive. 1260 metres of elevation too - most of it from 32-42km by the looks. Yikes! It's a girls' weekend away so not so much a race as an all day run! I guess I can always drop down to the half (which is 22.5km incidentally). I'll see how I feel in a few months time. Upshot is, quite a few trail run adventures in my future.
However, for the next few days, I'm taking the children away on holiday and won't be doing any running in an effort to shake this virus we all have - yesterday's run, while on pace, was harder than it should have been and my heart rate about 15BPM above where it usually would be at that pace.8 -
@emptydog Glad you enjoyed your run in the ran.
@rheddmobile Yeah for getting to run at Shelby Farms again, even if the crowds weren't very polite. You'll get your hill legs back soon. I would love to see all of those horses together!
@katharmonic Glad the music and cry were therapeutic. I'm glad it looks like there won't be rain for your HM. You will do great.
@AlphaHowls I hear ya. I can't believe it's the middle of April already.
@ContraryMaryMary You are going to kill your PB's on the 10K. I just feel it! Congratulations on entering your first marathon! You can do it. You are so consistent with your training. Enjoy your holiday and hope the break helps you all hear from the virus.1 -

Really had to give myself a pep talk to take the first step today. I just wasn't feeling it. I told myself, "Just get up and do it. You will feel better when you are done. I promise. And, if I'm wrong....well, then you can say I lied. If you get going and really feel the need to stop or just walk, you can. But, you have to get going."
It turned out to not be bad at all and my back was okay. I ran the treadmill because I thought it was a little chilly outside, the pollen is pretty bad, and I wanted to control the incline and speed. My workout today called for 5 min Zone 1 (4.2 mph) 5 min Zone 2 (4.5 mph) , 3 x (2 min zone 4 (5.0 mph)/2 min zone 1), 5 min zone 1. I actually did an extra 7:15 minutes in zone 1 to reach 2.50 miles. And, the big news is I RAN THE ENTIRE THING (34:15 minutes)! First time I have done that since my surgery! I'll still take walk breaks on some of the runs - especially the longer ones. But, I am going to try to run more of the shorter ones with no, or fewer walk breaks.
So, I'm glad I had that little talk with myself and I was right. I did feel better afterwards.
