Hello-
I'm new to this thread but it looks like a great, supportive place. I'm 54 on Saturday, and the doctor's scales this past week had me at 10 pounds from my highest recorded weight (again). I feel mad at myself for allowing myself to climb the weight ladder yet again. In 2014 I thought I had it figured out and got to my goal weight within a year and a half. Stress creeped into my life starting in 2018 with big changes at work and then of course the pandemic and working in a school post pandemic .
Back in January of 2021 I told myself that if I kept at it I could be close to my goal by July. Well July is here and I haven't budged except a little in the wrong direction. It seems that I go along really well for a few weeks and then something derails me, I get discouraged and then quit for weeks (or months). Going to try to come to the forums for support this time around (as it did really help in 2014-2016).
Thanks for creating this group. Goals in July is just to stay on track and keep logging, knowing that one day isn't going to undo all of the good and being consistent overall is the real key. Also want to get out and ride my recumbent trike as often as I can. It's either been 90 degrees or raining lately it seems. But after my gym shut down during the pandemic and didn't reopen, I did buy a used stationary bike, so I've been riding that almost daily (when I can't get outside and ride).
Good news from my doctor is that all of my numbers are good with the exception of cholesterol, and I know it's just eating too much of the wrong things. Fingers crossed for the other screenings that I have to endure over the next month will also show good results. The older you get, the more they want to poke and prod right?

Hello all! I'm Kim from Indiana. 50, married with three girls, 21, 17, and 11. Trying to lose 10 pounds this summer, which will put me at the high end of a healthy weight for my height. For workouts I like to walk, hike and do Kuk Sool Won, a Korean martial art. Been doing the Kuk Sool about 9 months now and just got my yellow belt. Today I'm working in the office - I go in about 1-2 days a week and work from home the other days. This is new as of last year due to pandemic. In office days stink, as all I do is stuff letters into envelopes all day. Super boring. And it's rainy here today so I might not get to go for a walk at lunch. we will see.
Goals for July - either walk or Kuk Sool daily. Track all my food. Current weight is 154.4. Would like to get to 146 by end of month, but I'll take anything under 150. Who am I kidding - I'll take any loss I can get. Have a little camping trip planned for weekend of the 9th, and then a vacation planned for the last week of July. Will try to be sure to do active things at those times. Nice to "meet" all of you. I will try to get here daily to check in.6 -
Did a spinning downloadable workout then took a walk. I do find that in the heat I’m not going as fast. Just a little slower. The plan for tomorrow is to do some HIIT
Tracey – I can’t help but wonder if Allie’s family feels that since she’s always been at their beck and call, they expect it. Since she has always just taken the way they treat her, they feel that it’s OK. Time for Allie to step up! I really like doing crafts, but one craft that I absolutely hate to do is quilting.
Speaking of crafts – remember I was making those dish towels with the crochet topper so you can put it around your oven handle? Well, I saw some made and I even recognized some of the towels that came from the dollar store. Do you know what they were asking? $9! I almost died. The towel cost $1, the yarn probably 10 cents at most since you can make a lot from one skein of yarn. Wonder if I should make some for the soup kitchen’s Christmas auction?
About the job: I talked to Vince last night. He told me to go over Amanda’s head to the store manager and ask him “as store manager, am I being fired or is there a problem with the quality of my work. You know that every time I had free time, I always asked you or Terry for additional work. One time I asked Amanda for work, she told me she didn’t have anything for me to do, and I even suggested work that I saw needed to be done”. We’ll just take it from there. If cutting my hours/days continues, perhaps corporate should be made aware of this. How although I only want to work 4 hours, I have and will to continue to give the company 4 hours of work. I have witnessed other employees, while they will work for 8 hours, they text on their phone, draw pictures, stand around doing nothing, go outside to talk on their phone. I know it won’t change anything, but if anything it’ll make me feel good.
Kylia – when we were looking for lights for our detached garage so that they would match the house’s, we went to the store where the lights were originally purchased. Is that an option for you? We were lucky in that when we purchased this house it was only 6 months old, but it might be harder if your home is older
Lisa – I wish I was closer to kylia. I’m SURE that we could work something out. I don’t have a problem just jumping in and doing something that I see needs to be done.
Candy – we’re so very glad you found this group, too. Love hearing from you
The weather looks nice now. It’s supposed to start raining later so I will probably go in the pool in a few and then maybe take my evening walk earlier.
I can’t say that in June I’ve lost weight, and I can’t say that I’ve gained. I must say, that it seems to be harder and harder to lose the weight. No surprise there. Also, my body is changing (thicker around the middle) and I DO NOT like the changes. But I don’t think there’s anything I can do about it. Fortunately, I haven't gained, the rolls are just redistributed
Congrats to all the losers!
Dramaqueen – congrats on the good news. What I absolutely hate (and I know there’s nothing that can be done) is the phrase “well, at your age….”
KimShea – welcome! Where will you be going on your vacation?
Michele NC2 -
Heather - I love when DH and I work on a project together. Today I should do laundry, and he helps me with it for my back and hip. It’s supposed to be up to 36 again today though so I am not running the dryer.
Machka - I am not a morning person and can’t imagine waking up and working out. Like you, I have a couple hours an evening to myself in the Winter, right now I have too much time alone. I guess I just can’t be pleased. 😂
Kylia - lack of structure is a huge reason people leave jobs another one is when the management team isn’t all on the same page. You are in a very difficult position, I honestly don’t know how you have managed it for so long. I hope you are paid handsomely.
Heather - those trips are going to keep you excited for the next few months, it’s always wonderful to have something to look forward to.
Michele - I enjoy a variety of crafts too, I enjoy painting, scrapbooking, making cards things where I see a quick result. I lose interest in things like cross stitch, quilting, knitting. I think making those towels for the auction would be a great idea. Doesn’t cost you a lot, but people sure enjoy them. I used to have a few but they wore out years ago.
I am sitting on the deck right now, but will soon have to move inside I think. The sun is about to get into the position that I can’t avoid it. There is a beautiful breeze and I don’t want to miss it.
I have 4 days off and absolutely no idea what I want to do.
Sitting around is not enjoyable for me , but working on things I want to do is out of the question because of the heat and my back. I’ll have to come up with Something.

HAPPY JULY 1st !!! --
Penny – Thinking of you and your move. Perhaps you will be able to visit Longyearbyen now and then. I hope you will be happy with your new neighbors and make good friends.
KimShea01 – Welcome! Post often so we can get to know one another. :flowerforyou:
Tracey – You have just inspired me to knit again! Our DDIL is expecting baby boy #2. I love to knit baby blankets! Thank you!
We seem to be having a break from the heat and this morning is cool and overcast. I am hoping that my hanging fuchsia will begin to recover from the recent heat spell. It is still a crispy critter in many places and not especially pretty. :ohwell:

BARBIE thanks for starting us off!
@Snowflake1968 Tracey, Any evolution on your computer situation? I have had great experience using plants and herbs etc against insects. Never had major issues with spiders but found this online. Many insects do not like lavandar. it's a totally yuck to them. i've had good luck against ants with orange flower essential oil and also cinnamon...
found online. Many critters hate laveender so i'd start there. peppermint maybe too. i would guess it's the lemon in the lemon dish soap that bugs the spiders..
Spider Repelling Herbs and Essential Oils include:
Eucalyptus.
Citronella.
Lavender.
Peppermint.
Tea Tree.
Cinnamon.
Citrus.
Cedar.
@cityjaneLondon Heather, 80min x 2 people is an awesome cleaning session;
KEVRIT i think you know this but AA is for him and alanon would be for loved ones (whether he goes to AA or not)
ALLIE belated happy birthday!
Computer purchase
I looked into all sorts of options: fixing, buying on backmarket (reputable guarantied secondhand online tech sales), and local refurbished nd finally bought a new one. I'm in the mac rabbit hole for now. Since air is identical to macbook pro at present in specs, but 300 less, plus i get a 10% teacher/student discount, it was the best option. even the refurbished seller suggested it was better buying new. i bought the 3 year garantee this time. macbook screens are so fragile and so expensive if they break.
i didn't want to spend the 1000 euros but am glad to be done with it. my last computer was a lemon. it was giving me grief from day one, with problems recognized (overall for this version) 2 years later but never fully repaired...long story. it never worked properly. so i'm glad to be done with it. i wanted to leave the mac rabbit hole but it's not a good time to get used to a new computer approach.
NATURAL SLEEP HELP
I've used valarien, well known for helping sleep. my sister who's a nurse only takes a half sometimes, cause strong for her.
passion flower- recommended by many (passes double blind test) https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/21294203/
melatonin - only taken rarely by me, though many seem to like it. a hormone?

Allie - I don’t know how your family can treat you so shabbily. It seems to me, as an outsider looking in, that if you aren’t at their beck and cal bending over backwards for them they treat you like dirt under their feet. It makes me sad for you.
I’m happy to read you had a lovely day. Happy Birthday
Rebecca- I was seriously depressed a few years ago and started reading and posting happy, positive, kind quotes nightly along with starting a gratitude journal it made a tremendous difference. I have recommended it to two friends that took me seriously and have since thanked me for the difference it has made in their lives and outlook.
Lisa - I want to quilt, my Mom did beautiful embroidery work and I have quilt blocks for all of the family. I just don’t think I have the patience for it. I like to see progress in my crafts quickly or I give up.
Barbie - thank you for the new thread. I really appreciate you all and enjoy catching up.
I am starting a 4 day weekend and next week is a 5 day weekend! This weekend we are buying a used vehicle from a friend so we will both have transportation. Neither vehicle is new and not in the best shape but as long as they get us where we’re going I’ll be happy.
We have been getting the tremendous heat here this week and it’s stifling in our trailer. I have been sitting on the deck in the evenings until way past bedtime. It’s currently 2240 and there is finally a nice breeze. I just went inside for a minute and it felt like walking into a furnace.
I think most of the restrictions are being abolished tomorrow. I don’t know how I feel about it since we are still on outbreak at work. It will be nice to have a family gathering with all of us though.
One of our resident’s son showed up with Wendy’s frosty’s for the staff today. What a special treat that was. I have never had one before and was shocked when I added it and found out the calorie count!!!! Since that was all I ate today at work I guess it was ok.
I’m down 3.2 lbs this month, I hope I can keep you it up.
Have a lovely day ladies.
Tomorrow is Canada Day but there is not a lot of celebrating going on this year.

I'm sorry you were depressed, but glad you took up journaling and reading positive quotes to help you. I asked my middle son once, when we were discussing his depression, and I asked him to describe was depression feels like compared to general sadness. He thought for a moment and answered, "when you do things that make you happy, but they don't give you joy anymore. That about broke my heart. But he takes mess to help him, and of course they had Athena Rose. I think looking thru life with a child's perspective helps too.
Hugs!

Paid bills, balanced to the penny, (love to put that zero with a line across it in the checkbook), and sent money to son for rent. The rent to management company gets automatically withdrawn from his account. We have his banking information on our online bill pay. I would imagine there's not a lot of elderly parents paying their kids rent, but we thought it would strengthen his credit as a young adult. Plus its funny as heck!

Countdown to Athena hug 15 days!1 -
Finally took a stand with neighbor at son's house. The last straw was them shooting a large bottle rocket into my yard. Fortunately I watered and it is a white clover yard now so I didn't have to worry about a fire. A number of yards are tinder now because of our drought and high temp. High temps will be back the next few days. 90's plus not as bad as Seatle area.
I plan to call parking police until the quit blocking me out of my garage in the back. These are the ones who had the dog who threatened me so I am choosing not to talk to them directly. She was upset with me because I was not respectful. Respect is earned by actions. I tend to make excuses for others and wait too long to take action.
I admit I have avoided this conflict because other things were in front on the list. The large bottle rocket is what put it to the top.
If I have any converstion with them I will say how would you react if my dog threatened your safety, if I shot a bottle rocket at your yard when I know you have small children and a dog in your yard. (they now have a small dog that does not cause problems.), and I made it impossible for you to park on your property. This is why I chose to have the parking police involved.
Follow the parking rules, refrain from shooting fireworks into my yard, and then I have no problem with you.4 -
DramaQueen & KimShea01-- Welcome!
Margaret -- I hope your neighbors respond in a positive way. Good luck. :flowerforyou: My mom liked this quote, "Good fences make good neighbors."
We are getting ready to replace our microwave and oven combination. It is quite old by now and no longer works. We have lived here 20 years. We’ve ordered new from a different company and hope to have it delivered soon. The old microwave and oven-set stopped working & is still in the kitchen, useless and unpleasant to see. We plan to have it hauled away when the new one arrives. A local company will install the new one.

Margaret, hoping that whatever transpires with your neighbor irons out the problems. Do you remember all the problems I had with my apartment neighbors in Hammond Oregon? I can so empathise with you! I had Prudence just opening her door and letting poor Annabelle just wander down the steps, hopefully doing her business, but wouldn't come back upstairs. Then I had the weird couple we shared a wall with that used a loud tv as white noise to fall asleep. Society is so crazy nowadays. Gone is the sensibilities of quiet hours after 10 pm, and not before 8:00 am. You have people talking loud at 2 am (because they're drunk), and stealing clothes outta dryers if you aren't standing over your dryer and watching it. Its frustrating!3

Hi all, was in a good mood, or at peace peaceful this morning until DH decided to blame me again for what he did. I’m looking into an ALANON group and therapy. January is a bit off but those 6 months will go by fast so have to start now.
Didn’t gain any last month even with everything going on so happy about that.
Thank you all for the sound advice. Much easier to give it than to take it but I’m trying.

Barbie--Thanks for getting us started on the new month and reminding us to take care of ourselves.
Rebecca--I am excited for you and your trip to see family later this month. Looking forward to lots of Athena Rose and grandma pictures.
Machka--I too would like to find more energy when I get off work. But anymore by the time I get off, my mind and body shut down and I can not find the energy or will power to do anything. DH even did the dishes and cleaned the kitchen last night and he even fixed supper. I know mine is because of stress at work, but not sure what to do as I can not make anyone take a job ad be responsable. I am still not sure about the 2 new hires. One didn;t show up Tuesday and when I called her she said she didn''t have it done. I make a copy of the schedule and highlighted her days and times. Will see if she shows up tomorrow or not. If not she is done. The other one just isn't sure the hours are going to work for her. Really, it was explained several times in the interview and when the job was offered. What is wrong with people??? Thanks for letting me vent.
Michele--making some of those towels for the soup kitchen fund raiser sounds like a great idea. I have seen them at craft shows for about $10 each. My grandma used to make them and I still have some. I like having them handi.
Margaret--Good for you standing up to those people. I will be so glad when the 4th is over and firworks are done. The people across the from us have been doing it everynight so far and until after 11. My poor puppy will not go out and just sits in the house and cries. And then I think of all the money they are just burning up.
Another hot day and I am finishing up my 3rd 12 hour shift this week and just 8-9 hours tomorrow and will be at 50 for the week. Next week worse as have someone on vacation, I didn't cancel it as she has tried twice this year and got cancelled so will get over it.
Blessings, Vicki GRAND ISLAND NE3 -
Vicki,
Yep I am so excited! We have a week or so for our trip. Plus I will be back down in August sometime to eldest sisters. Even though she isn't having the family reunion because of kitchen remodeling at end of this month, I think we're still all getting together and having a sister get together.👍💖

Rita- bless you .. an alcoholic always blames evreryone else for there problems ,believe me my friend Al-anon will help you lots ,you will find that there are many other people in the same shoes as you...
Why do I always step right in the middle of it when it comes to my SIL ,I told her that Tracy has a baby registry thats all i said and then she went off on me about she has alot going on with the houses ,need a crane to take trees down at the cottage and the property taxes are due and do i want to help with that i could pay for the crane or the property taxes..
Both very expensive...i told her the truth that I am living on the alimony i get and waiting on disability..
She knows how to just take that knife and twist it in my back.. Sean had her send me edible arrangements and she wasnt pleased she had to do that..
She has always been a bully and I will try and distance myself from her .. ugh..4 -
Hi everyone, I'm relatively new to MFP and definitely new to the boards. I started focusing on eating healthier/losing weight again a few weeks ago. I have a lot to lose and it is overwhelming but one choice at a time. I'm 57 and really want to be able to be active again. My goal for this month is to keep tracking and to try to figure out a way to move more. I work remote and have knee issues so some days I never leave the house.
Looking forward to getting to know folks!

She’s BAAAACK! (But no axe. )
I’m going to try to restrain myself from posting as often this time and focus on reading every day.
I’ve been working, and since then camping with my youngest girl and for spouse and assorted dogs and cats, as well as dgs Nicolas. This culminated in camping by myself during this heat wave in Washington for five days and nights in Anacortes WA, which is about 30° Fahrenheit cooler than temps in Issaquah in the daytime, cooling off to lower 60s at night. Perfection. I set up camp, cooked on the campfires I BUILT, and tore down and packed - all by myself. I’m proud and happy I can still do it!
Rebecca - I was sorry to read that you lost your husband. Hang in there- it gets easier.
Penny! good luck on your move back to Trömso. One of the people very dear to me was born there, and credited his life there as a youngster along with a 12-Step program with making him the man he was.
Betty, thank you so much for starting our new thread. I’ll try to keep up.

No instead of parking in one of their legal spots she chooose to park mostly on their driveway and moves partially up believing this makes room for me to get out plus they leave their garbage cans there too. She is parking within 20 feet of my garage which if I read the law correctly is still illegal. I just called the parking police again. This is at son's house so it is part of the reason I let it slide. It effects the value of my property so I can't.3

Strong thunderstorms today so no horseback riding. It makes them skittish, so even indoor ridíng isn't as safe as usual. It makes my mom skittish too, so she wants me home. Yes I am over fifty! But she gets anxious.
Tomorrow Teddy goes to the vet. I hope I can postpone the canine dental to next year. It's not cheap.
I finally made dental and gynecology appointments. That leaves the eye doctor, and dermatologist, and I'm sure I need a mammogram. Maybe a colonoscopy too. I'm turning high maintenance! The awful part is that each appointment spawns three more until my head spins.
Meanwhile, I need to write a story. Something about a building collapsing. Hmmm.

Katla - glad to be of assistance. I can’t wait to see your finished project.
Julie - we haven’t made the jump yet to buy a computer. We both have tablets and phones so we’re holding off. I think that will be hubby’s Christmas present this year.
Rebecca - your son described depression well. I find that nothing gives me pleasure even things that should. My depression also appears as anger, I am angry for no reason. I tend to have situational depression. I’ve been on meds three times, currently I am because of working through the Outbreak and not being able to see my family.
My daughter’s MIL is a physiologist and has been taking a mild anti depressant for 40+ years. She said she has tried several times to go off it and it just doesn’t work. I’m so glad that the stigma surrounding it and other mental illnesses is starting to be recognized as illnesses and not something people can just change or get over.
Vicki - o hope you find reliable help soon, it seems to be difficult for you. Are the wages low? I find that is a big issue around here.
Allie - I’m sorry, but I think Jean is just rude! Why would she even expect that you would help even if you were financially able to, you aren’t welcome to use the cottage and their houses are nothing you have any responsibility anyway. I can’t believe the gall of that woman. She’s just a user and abuser in my lowly opinion.
I have looked at local motels to fo for air conditioning for the night. Even with the promised “benefits” hubby thinks I’m being a bit extreme. Can’t say I didn’t try anyway. 🤷♀️ It made sense to me. $70 would be worth it.
The Grands and eldest daughter came out for a couple of hours today, we went looking for a small pool for the kids but we were unsuccessful. I came home and ordered one on Amazon. They keep touting shop local, but it’s hard when they never have what you’re looking for.
I’m currently sitting on the deck again, and I’m very bored. It’s too hot to do much else though.

Tracey- your right.. thats why I will distance myself from them i dont mind talking to my brother,he can be a pain too,but nothing like her..I dont need the drama in my life right now.2

Went to the YM this morning for water exercise. They were having trouble with the showers, no hot water.
Cool and cloudy here today, feels good. Got my flowers around the gazebo watered. Lawn has brown patches after all the heat. Pastures looking rather dry too. I probably should hook up the hoses and see if I can get some water back there. The blueberries are just starting to turn color. We have some that ripen early and some that ripen later.
