I did notice that both times after I stopped at mom's and started back out, that my HR spiked to around 175/170 then settled down to the 140's after a couple of minutes. Does that happen to anyone else? Do you think it is real or a Garmin glitch?
I don't have HR on my main data field on my Garmin. I think it's on the 3rd screen and I have to toggle through them to get to it.
I don't tend to take much notice of the HR reading when running, as I understand it's more effective when used in combination with a HR strap (which I don't have).
If you felt your heart racing when you noticed it had increased then I'd get it checked out/keep an eye on it, if you didn't notice any difference in physically how you felt at the time it peaked, I'd take it with a pinch of salt.
Back last year I started to have heart palpitations and my heart rate became very low whilst resting. I went to my doctor and they gave me an ECG (it didn't pick up anything) but they did look at my HR data on my Garmin Connect, because I was able to pin point exactly when I was getting them. After having my blood checked, it tuned out that I had iron deficiency anaemia and a dose of iron tablets sorted things out. I know only need to take an iron tablet once a fortnight.
So I know my Garmin is reliable when not running and I'm resting, I'm just not sure how reliable the HR is whilst running as many top athletes seem to wear HR straps as well at GPS watches.5 -
Just checking in, skimmed posts, hugged and liked as appropriate.
@Teresa502 that race sounds awesome! Great job!
I'm still feeling under the weather, so haven't run except one mile yesterday. It was a double success as 1) I got out the door, and 2) I called it and came home when I realized I wasn't feeling better after all. It's settled in my sinuses now and I feel headachey and tired... and it didn't help that I took some cold medicine Friday afternoon that contained caffeine and it majorly messed up my sleep. Vitamins, fluids, rest...
@Avidkeo hope you feel better soon!
@rheddmobile I'm glad you got to do your long run. You needed it. I'm also running low on flips, so probably shouldn't send you any.
@quilteryoyo maybe I missed this, but did you check your HR manually at those times? Sometimes mine has weird readings, but I typically assume it was a glitch, like cadence-lock or something.
Hey, speaking of that run the world thing, we're about 500k behind pace - should we add another runner or 2?3 -
@sweetdaisy13 I'm glad they figured out what was going on with you. I didn't really feel anything, except that it was hard to get started back. I figured that was just because I had been standing around with little movement too long. I wouldn't have thought too much about it if it hadn't happened again after I had stopped. It did NOT happen when I stopped to talk to my neighbor, but I wasn't there as long. I did not manually check it @polskagirl01 . I started too, but didn't want to stop after just a few steps. LOL If it happens again, I will. Thanks for your input ladies.
@polskagirl01 I hope you feel better soon.3 -

Cloudy, mid 60s F, a few raindrops, and variable winds. Was a little tight at the beginning, but nice and loose at the end. Kinda looking forward to next week's race -- if nothing else, they may mistake me for the ox.
When you pop in here claiming your December 2021 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
PUT THE FUN BACK IN THE RUN!
Return to a good running weight of 175 lbs (second attempt)

Not too shabby this morning. Took it easy, running 1/4 of a mile on each mile. Uphill the first 3 miles, and against the wind coming back. 1hr 31min, average pace 15:10. Trying not to get down too much on my pace. It’s dropped significantly! The silver lining…. I’m still above the Disney requirements.8 -
@Zoomie402 great running! Don't worry about your pace. I went from a 10-11 minute mile pace back in 2015-2016 to coming back in 2021 with a 15-16 minute pace for the first few weeks. 4 months later I'm at a 12-13 minute pace. Just for reference if it helps. I'm impatient too!7

No running today. Was up late again (kids) and we were forecasted to have rough storms from 4am through about 8 or 9am. So I slept in.
No storms!
I wouldn't have been OK running on 4 hours sleep anyway though. Oh well.
No, really, I'm cool with it. You know me.
*grumble* * grumble*
I actually am OK with it today. Serously.
Sort of...11 -
17 miles this morning. Power went out overnight, so had to wait for it to come back on so I could make my coffee and oatmeal. So got out a little later than planned. It was cloudy for most of the run, then the sun came out around mile 13. 84F, but only 62% humidity after the rain came through. Didn't have a time limit today, so just kept it slow and easy and let the time pass without concern. Think this is the longest run of the year (so far), and Garmin says it was my fastest 17 miles ever 🤷♂️

@Tramboman Nice run. Glad you are looking forward to your race.
@Zoomie402 Nice running. Hills are hard.
@WhatMeRunning They need a LOL button. Can you run this afternoon instead?
Very nice run @Scott6255 !3 -
@quilteryoyo unfortunately no. I have to help keep the kids corralled and safe while they are up. They're 9 and 11 with severe autism and can easily escape/overwhelm one adult. We spend all waking hours on high alert. And nobody else can handle them, you have to know their cues and behavior very well. It's why they go to special schools with a para/teacher ratio higher than the students (only 3 to 4 per class at that).
My running schedule is either before they wake up, or between them going to school and me going to work.11 -

10.5 slow, sweaty miles this morning. I usually am annoyed with myself because I just can't seem to get up early on Sundays to run. Well this morning my dog and a Thunderstorm woke me up about 4:50 am. (Which is actually a little later than I usually get up. 😁). But even though I was up I couldn't run because it was lightning. So naturally I went back to sleep. I do like to wait until it isn't dark on the weekends though so I probably would have waited a little while anyway. But I didn't get out until about 830 and I would really like to get out about 7.
The weather app said it was 76°F feels like 77°F with 79% humidity and a dew point of 69°. The temperature wasn't too bad, but it seemed more humid than that to me. I guess because everything was wet and as it heated up you could feel the moisture evaporating off the road. But other than that it was a pretty nice run. I saw a couple of dogs I didn't recognize about a block and a half from my house. I think they probably got out during the storm so I went a different way than I usually go. It was kind of nice to change things up a little.
At one point I was running down a little country road and I startled some young cattle who were standing near the fence. But on my way back they were a little less tentative and more curious about what I was doing. I was scared by one dog. He was in his fenced yard and he just barked at me. He barks at me every time I run past, so I usually am expecting him and he doesn't seem really aggressive. He's just loud. I was lost in thought because I had just seen a really pretty German Shepherd. There was a police vehicle parked at that house and I was wondering if he was a K9 officer. So when the other dog barked it startled me and I yelped. Thankfully no one was around.
I also saw my donkey again. I'm trying to think of a name for it, but I'm not sure if it is male or female so I need to think of something gender neutral.
All in all it was a nice Sunday run. I have almost 320 miles on my shoes so yesterday I ordered some new shoes. And a pair of oofas. So definitely looking forward to getting them soon.

@kgirlhart one house I run by every now and then got a dog. Or they are keeping front door open. Twice I've gone by and been startled vy the dog only because I'm not expecting it. I usually know which yards have the dogs (and now chickens) after running around here for 10+ years3
-
Nice running @kgirlhart ! I often startle cattle on my run too. When I was little, dad would bring home pigeons that had fallen out of nests where he worked. We would keep them until they could eat and fly and then let them go. Some stuck around and some didn't. We always tried to think of "gender neutral" names for them. My favorite was Alice Cooper. It would come flying when we called. It was so funny. There was another too, but I can't think of the name right now.3

Golf today instead of running. After yesterday's 2.3 inches of rain, course will undoubtedly be like a swamp.

Catching up on the thread and liking and hugging (and praying, for those of you who would appreciate that too.)
A stomach bug and cold are making their way through our house at the moment, and I caught both over the weekend. I'm actually doing a lot better today, but decided to skip my scheduled run since my only food yesterday was toast and Gatorade, and I'd like to have a little more fuel in the tank.
I'll probably get more than enough exercise catching up on our regular laundry + all the sheets and towels, anyway! So there's my bright side.8 -
I'm glad you are feeling better @penguinmama87 ! Take it easy today and fully recover. Stomach bugs are the worst.0

I’m really not good at being online over the weekends, I’m on my laptop working like 9 – 10 hours a day so I don’t like to even look at it on the weekends. So I’m catching up now
I completed my July Half on Saturday. @katharmonic I see we were running together separately funny we both picked the same day, great job! It was so hot when I finished it was 88F, I ran at the greenway which is paved and is 6 miles if you go both directions and do the out and back (kinda confusing if you don’t see it). I took about 13 minutes off my June one, still slow at 3:25 but I’m happy to get the miles in and that is all matters right now. There was a guy on a bike going back and forth and he was so awesome, he kept giving me encouragement each time he passed me. I did go back to the parking lot once for water and the bathroom and when I headed back out he passed me and yelled YES YES runner you get out there for more, it was too funny. I don’t have the medal yet, Skip is going to pick July – December medals up today when she’s out today.
@quilteryoyo thank you I’m feeling pretty good on most runs. She said a year until I was back to where I was when I fell. You are correct that she thought I’d start back to running in June which would be about 6 months after the surgery. Great pictures, love a good cow, our one greenway sits behind a farm so there are lots of horses, cows and donkeys, and somedays doesn’t make for a pleasant smell. I honestly pay like no attention to my HR, sorry can’t help. My dad used to have homing pigeons when he was a teenager.
@Avidkeo glad you are feeling better though not 100% yet.
@sweetdaisy13 great trail run!
@AlphaHowls happy 6 years. Awesome mileage as usual. Hope the stomach calms down, my mom had IBS and Crohns nothing worse than that.
@katharmonic first sorry about the relationship ending, hugs, that is never easy especially when it’s sudden. I find running is a blessing and a curse when I’m emotional, time to think and time to think. About 18 months ago I was promoted at work to a managerial position and it is hard, I feel like I get nothing done because I spend all my days fighting fires, it’s exhausting and even harder when I can’t just gather everyone up and show them something or talk face to face. You’ll get into the groove you’ll see.
@polskagirl01 might be a good idea to see if a couple more want to join
@rheddmobile it’s always good to take a step back and recharge.
@Zoomie402 because I’m coming back from injury my concern is adding mileage, I completely believe you cannot add mileage and speed at the same time.
@Scott6255 great 17 miler! Woohoo
@kgirlhart in the spirit of running perhaps, Garmin, Boston, Myles or Fartlek ha ha cracking myself up! I just brought a new pair of oofas, love them!! What shoes did you buy?
@penguinmama87 feel better!

@polskagirl01 About run the world group. I forgot to say that I haven't added my miles for a while, but adding a couple more people wouldn't hurt.
@skippygirlsmom Great running and love the encouragement you got from the biker. Also love the names for the donkey.1 -
I'm feeling a little better today, not 100% but running easy felt right so I got in about 8k. It was raining at first and just muggy by the end. Saw the swans (and 3 tents, across from unattended fishing poles - fishermen must've been hiding from the rain).
So who else wants to run around the world with us? I'm not sure if this is the right link, though - if it's not, and someone has the signup link, will you post it for us? @TheMrWobbly4 -

I am dog tired this morning. These 1 day off/2 day on rotations are killing me. I have tomorrow off, then work 2 more 12's, then I get a 4 day weekend. It'll be much needed. After I posted yesterday, my foot started to hurt again. I rolled it out with a frozen water bottle, and it was just painful. I spoke with PT this morning, and they said emailed me some material with some extra stretches to add to my regular routine. Tearing ligaments in your feet is no joke. I try to play tough because I don't want my family fussing over me, but yesterday got the best of me. I cried it out for a few minutes, then sucked it up and kept going on with my day. About and hour after rolling it out, the pain was virtually gone. No pain this morning when I woke up, and so far, no pain today either.
@WhatMeRunning that does give me some hope for sure! If anything, I'm learning to slow down and enjoy being outside. It sounds like you have your hands full at home. Your dedication to your health is inspiring. A lot of people tend to forget that they have to make time for themselves too.
@AlphaHowls You are amazing!!
@kgirlhart I totally would've yelped too lol I get in a zone often. I should probably be more aware of my surroundings, but I just go somewhere in my mind to push through and then *bam* something always startles me.
@penguinmama87 How are you feeling today?
@skippygirlsmom You are 100% correct. I hadn't even thought of it like that. I'm going to try to change my mindset and keep that in mind as I continue to move forward. I've never been fast, and I know I'll never be an elite runner because I'm not built for that, but I do want to continue adding miles and focusing on the ability to sustain miles.
@pfeiferlindsey glad to hear you got it done! Hopefully it wasn't a bad run for you.6 -
@Zoomie402 I have lost about 4 to 5 minutes off my pace over the past few years because of injury and probably age I've just had to tell myself it's okay. I never was breaking records to start with, now I concentrate on longer runs and enjoying the run.
@pfeiferlindsey glad you finished your HM, hate when courses are short. Congratulations.6 -
I tried joining that run the world group, but it's giving me a lot of trouble due to browser/security settings. So I will sadly pass as the tinkering to join and then reconfigure each time to make an update probably is more time/effort than I'm willing to invest. Sorry!3
-
@Zoomie402 I'm glad rolling your foot helped. Hopefully another day of not running and it will be okay. Plus, it's okay to cry it out. I do it all the time.
I don't blame you. Thanks for trying @WhatMeRunning !
Great job on finishing your HM @pfeiferlindsey . Too bad the course was a bit short.2
