@Avidkeo my Trekz Titanium are still going strong 3 (or 4?) years later.
@abowersgirl Pre-race I mostly recommend you stick to whatever worked best for your long training runs. "Nothing new on race day." And the best advice I got before my first race (also a 10k) was to not go out too fast at the beginning. It's easy to get caught up in the excitement, but you tend to pay for it later.
@julieannegannon Shoes are very personal - what works for one runner may not be good for another. If you can go to a running store and have them fit you and maybe even do a gait analysis, they may be able to recommend something. It can also be helpful to try a bunch of shoes on and see what feels good. Many of us find what works for us, and then stock up when they're on sale.
Speaking of shoes, after I had almost a week off of running when I was sick recently, I wore my cheap Kalenji trail shoes, and noticed my quad/hip niggles weren't there after running. So I kept wearing them, and haven't worn the Brooks since, as an experiment. I'm really hoping the Brooks aren't part of my problem. Hopefully the time off just allowed things to heal better.7 -
@Avidkeo I have been using these wireless earbuds for several months and they work well and don't move at all in my ears.
https://www.amazon.com/Skullcandy-Sesh-True-Wireless-Earbud/dp/B0857JLRFJ/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=skullcandy+sesh+evo+true+wireless+earbuds&qid=1626816014&sprefix=Skullcandy+se&sr=8-1
I got them on sale, but they are still pretty inexpensive.3 -

My trail shoes are also Kalenji shoes from Decathlon. The first pair lasted 2 years and the grip hasn't worn at all.
They cost me £65.00 (GBP) and are by far the best trail shoes ever. No issues with them and they are very comfortable and brilliant for the longer distance runs.

Glad you had a good run @Tramboman !
Hope you get your phone fixed soon @Zoomie402 ! Those things are so frustrating. Nice weekend mileage!
@abowersgirl Glad you are still here and still running and pushing forward.
@julieannegannon I suggest going to a running shoe store and have them fit you and watch how you run. Then, they can suggest what you need for your particular body. It really does make a difference.
@Avidkeo You did great going that long. You'll be back to running all you want soon. I love my Trekz Titanium headphones.
@sweetdaisy13 Love how you use your time so wisely.
@skippygirlsmom You're statement that "I take blood pressure meds so I have to take them after I run or I have pee every 5 minutes, I’m worse than a male dog needing to mark my territory" made me laugh. Mom tells everyone that I have to stop at every light pole when we travel. LOL
@polskagirl01 Glad your niggles are gone. Hope it was the rest and not the shoes.4 -

Got up early enough this morning to get my run in before getting ready for work - was going in at 10:30. I actually hit the snooze one time more than I meant too, so barely had enough time, but I did. Since today was a recovery run, I just did the 35 + minutes at 4.2 mph. My legs were tired, so it wasn't as easy as I expected it to be. LOL7 -

I ran 5 miles this morning. It was uneventful, but nice. I was kind of tired,, but I managed a pretty good pace for summer.. It was light when I finished my run, but it didn't start getting light as early as it has been.

Thanks for all the earphone suggestions.
I do have a pair of aftershokz and love them too, I am nervous about using them in very wet conditions. But I gather they are pretty good and would hold up? I'm just sad because I bought the BackBeat fits on @PastorVincent suggestion and absolutely love them. I don't know kind of a tie to him? Hits you when you least expect it I guess9 -
July total: 25.1 miles
7/3: 3 miles
7/5: 2.7 miles
7/7: 3 miles
7/9: 2.6 miles
7/12: 3.2 miles
7/13: 3.5 miles
7/16: 4 miles
7/20: 3.1 miles
My run this morning was fine. Nothing special but not terrible. I went out on a trail near my house that I ran a lot last summer. It hasn't been mowed at all in months and the grass is over my knees on both sides of a very narrow single track trail. It's honestly a little sketchy because I can't tell where the ground is or if I'm about to step in a huge hole or on a snake. I'm definitely going to get injured out there if I keep going.
It's been so rainy I think that they just haven't been able to do the maintenance. Hopefully they will soon so I can get back on the trail. Until then I guess I'll stick to the sidewalks.6 -
julieannegannon wrote: »Okay I got very enlightened from you all from yesterday post about being on keto diet and having burning in my thighs. So I’m going go easy on my pace, be properly hydrated (I live in Yuma Az which is hot), adding more electrolytes and increasing my protein intake all for better recovery. I talked to my niece about it and she lifts weights and she suggested branch chain amino acids for faster recovery too. Do any of you take this supplement?
Also I going to have to get new running shoes next week when I get paid. I usually wear ASICS but I wear a 11.5 in wide width in men’s but ASICS have narrowed the wide width so I’m going to have to move on from them. One runner pointed out that he feels that Hoka puts out a very good shoe. Keeping my wide feet in mind do you have any other suggestions for me to consider? Thanks in advance for your input.
I have wide feet and suggest New Balance and Brooks, both of which have a wider toe box anyway, but also do wide fit. But as @skippysmom suggests, head to a running store and get properly fitted (my pro tip, chat to the sales people and find one that's a runner).5 -

So I think I was over confident about my goal because this is where I am at as of now. I hope I will be ready for the 10k in September. Found out it's the day after my brothers wedding so that means no drinking (which isn't really an issue) and no crazy amount of fried foods (always feel like garbage after the fact)
Is there anything else people would suggest doing a day before a race? This will be my first one ever!!
As it's your first race ever, all the pressure is off because regardless of how you run, you're setting a PB anyway! That being said, to ensure no major hiccups, don't eat anything unusual, or too much of anything (weddings are tricky), limit the dancing and time on your feet the day before (bearing in mind there will be many 10k races and only one wedding so prioritise appropriately), and drink lots and lots of water - the better hydrated you are the day before, the less you'll need water while you're running.
Don't worry about how much sleep you get - very few people sleep well the night before an event (no point trying to have an early night) but do try to get good sleep the few nights before that.
Make sure you arrive with plenty of time to spare - you often have to park a wee way from the start and there will be queues for race packet pickup and the portaloos.
Sunscreen - sometimes you get up so early on race day you forget this bit.
The buzz of race day is exciting and contagious. Enjoy it. Use it. But try to slow right down for your first kilometre - I can guarantee you'll run that one way too fast - I know I did! If you can control your speed at the start you'll be less likely to run out of steam mid race and more likely to have a strong finish. On that note, ignore everyone around you - they're running their own races their way (rightly or wrongly). You do your thing.
Enjoy yourself - events are so much fun!10 -
@avidkeo - I have the Powerbeats Pro and I love them. They stay put, sweat doesn't seem to bother them and the battery lasts forever. Before them I had Aftershokz Trekz Titanium and really loved them. However they kept breaking about 6 months in. Aftershokz kept replacing them but I gave up on them after 3 or 4 replacements.
@abowersgirl - I echo what others have said about hydration and nothing new on race day (food, shoes, clothes, etc.). The best advice I was given was to just go out and run and most importantly have fun! No matter how fast you run it will be a PR (personal record) for you! There is so much excitement with a race and you really want to take it all in and enjoy it.
@julieannegannon - I agree that running shoes are very personal. I also have wide feet and can't wear most of the the traditional brands (Asics, Brooks, etc.) I have worn Altras and like them ok but right now I love Topo Athletics. They have several different styles with different levels of cushion but the key will be to go and try different ones on and see what you like. Note that most brands and some stores have good return policies so you can return them within 30 days or so even if you have run in them but check and make sure your store does. That way you can really see if you like them in action.

Didn't he also recommend the Trekz? Or maybe I'm remembering it wrong, like maybe he fried a pair (or 2? like within a short time frame?) of Trekz by accidentally putting them through the wash. I might be making all of this up. Does anyone remember? I've worried about them handling moisture too, with lots of sweat, rain, pouring water on my head during races, etc. I definitely wait to plug them in to charge if they're wet, but otherwise haven't given them any special treatment. But also technology has surely gotten better over the past few years, so maybe some of the newer recommendations will be better for you.
@sweetdaisy13 I only got these because of the sale price (approx. 28GBP or 38USD, how can you say no to that?). They are the men's version, but seem the same fit-wise. I've run a marathon in Kalenji road shoes, and the only [minor] complaint I have is that the balls of my feet feel like they're taking more of a beating in them (both road and trail version).3 -

I haven’t tried Decathlon shoes but my running jacket from them is my favorite thing ever. They aren’t a brand which is commonly seen in America but their stuff is great!1 -
@polskagirl01 @rheddmobile @sweetdaisy13 I had never hear of the Kalenji shoes from Decathlon before either, but a quick Google search found them at Walmart, and very inexpensive (only $49.99). Hmmm, may have to give those a try.
8 miles this morning. Just a few degrees cooler than it has been in a while, but it made a huge difference in the way I felt. It was actually pleasurable. HR only averaged just barely above 120bpm. I always take cold showers in the summer, but for the first time in recent memory I wasn't sweating as soon as I got out and got dressed. But I know it will be back to sauna conditions tomorrow. Just have to enjoy these little gifts when you can.
Oh wow, I have already hit 100 miles this month. Don't remember do that this soon before. Cool.9 -

I have them as well and sweat a lot. They don't see rain too much here but get super sweaty in the summer.5 -

@quilteryoyo that’s too funny. I always say I never met a bathroom I didn’t want to visit. I swear it runs in my family, everyone seems to have to go all the time.
Yesterday was big garbage day in my neighborhood so they have this big claw thing that picks up the stuff in front of your house. I had a few bags of things out and they were picking it up, the claw swung and hit my mailbox breaking it off near the bottom (where the wood post in the ground stopped). The poor guys I walked out and I guess they expected me to lose my crap but I was just laughed and they said someone would be here today to fix it, sure enough they were here this morning already, but one problem, the person who installed it actually put the black post of the mailbox in the concrete along with the wooden post, they can’t get the black out of the ground to install a new one ha ha. The poor guy, I live in Alabama and he’s a sweet old country boy with overalls cut off into shorts and his southern drawl was so thick I could hardly understand him. He said they guys yesterday were so happy I didn’t yell, I said it’s a mailbox, he said people lose their minds screaming and hollering and threaten them, I said over a mailbox!!! Awful.
@martaindale we have a few trails that are less traveled that we run and sometimes I run them and the whole time I’m going “please no snakes, please no snakes”.
@ContraryMaryMary that’s the nice thing about our 2 local Fleet Feet is that both try to employ runners only, trail, road, short, ultra, tri, makes a big difference, plus they have training time like once a week or every other week where they learn about new shoes coming in or they have shoe reps come in and talk to them, it’s great.

Updates including from over the weekend. I'm patting myself on the back for waking up before my shift today to get some miles in. I have 3 hours left to go, and I'm feeling a little tired, but not too bad. We'll see how I feel tomorrow morning though! I wish I could be a consistent early riser, but my long shifts kick my rear.

Sorry, I've lost track of the thread and when I last posted. Just trying to maintain over here.
Re the Aftershokz conversation, I have the Aftershokz Air and have no problems with sweat or rain. It never occurred to me actually to be concerned about them getting wet. I do think I damaged one of the speakers somehow though as it buzzes a bit at higher volumes. I like them in general probably more than any other headphones I've worn, except for trying to wear them with a hat in the winter was a pain

Not sure when I last posted but nothing too eventful to report. Tonight was HM/marathon group and the workout was hill repeats for 30 minutes. Alternating running hard halfway up the hill, jog back down, hard all the way up, jog back down, and repeat that for 30 minutes. 10 minutes warmup and cooldown runs as well.

@martaindale That trail doesn't sound safe. Glad you are going to delay running on it again until it is mowed.
@polskagirl01 I was thinking that @PastorVincent suggested the Trekz too and I do remember him washing something twice in a short period. Don't recall if it was his headphones or not though.
Glad it was a little cooler for you @Scott6255 and congrats on reaching 100 miles already this month!
@skippygirlsmom Glad you were nice to the poor garbage guys. Some people can't see that it's a mailbox and accidents happen. I'm sure they were shaking in their boots before you spoke.
Nice running @Zoomie402 . Yeah for getting up early. I'm not sure I could run if I had 12 hour shifts. I can barely find the time if I work 8.4 -

I got up a little bit early this morning in order to get my run in. My tummy started giving me some minor issues, so I didn't make it out the door until 8:40. I decided I'd run driveway laps, just in case. I had no further issues, thankfully. The run was really hard though. My legs were tired and just didn't want to move to begin with. They finally loosened up about half way through. My pace was just a little bit faster than my Recovery Run yesterday - but it was on the treadmill, so I didn't have to deal with the hills and humidity. I'm calling just getting it done a victory today.6 -

I'm going to start training for my November HM soon. I have been thinking about training plans. I usually use a Hal Higdon plan and modify it to fit my needs. But I decided to try the Run with Hal app. I still have a couple of weeks before the actual training starts so just base building for now Yesterday was a 5 mile base run at 10:50 pace. I ran 5.3 at 10:43 pace so I thought that was really good. Today the plan was a 45 minute tempo run which should have been 4.2 miles at 10:35 pace. I actually ran 5.3 at 10:33 in 56 minutes. So I did hit the pace. Hal hasn't said anything yet since I only have 2 workouts logged. Tomorrow has 200 m at 800 pace so we'll see how that goes.
Today's run was really nice. The weather was a little cooler at 68°F and the dew point was only 66°. It is amazing how just a few degrees lower can make a difference.

Nice running @kgirlhart ! I hope you enjoy the Run with Hal app. I look forward to hear his comments. I kind of miss hearing about the relationship that @bearly63 had with him. (At least I think that it was her.)0

I can kind of understand the yelling over the mailbox! Coincidentally we saw an incident with the same sort of claw in our neighborhood just this morning. They were whipping it around and nearly smashed the neighbor’s car! I would be pretty annoyed if they were being as careless as our trash guys were, it might be just a mailbox but it could easily be worse! Our trash at the moment is being picked up by a new company with rented equipment (I didn’t even know you could rent a garbage truck but it says on the side it’s a rental) because the city FIRED the old company for not picking up trash! So I guess it makes sense that they don’t know what they are doing,2 -
Nice running @kgirlhart. I will start build up for my next major half marathon soon too - mines on October 31st. Before then I have a couple of 10k races, the first of which is this Sunday. Consequently speed work today, but nothing too strenuous 🤪 only 6 x 400m repeats. Rest day tomorrow (the third this week!) and a short freshen-up on Saturday. I haven’t done a 10k since 2019 and my PB from then still holds. Aiming to smash that. Nervous! No pressure!!!8

And the lesson from today's run is that my new shorts get a big thumbs down. The color/fabric showed every bit of sweat and made me look like I peed myself. Now I remember why I like black. BUT I did find a nice back road that connects nicely with some of my other routes, and made it home before the storm I could see off in the distance9

@polskagirl01 I have a lovely grey running skort, but... same problem as your shorts. Sweat shows up really easily and it looked like I wet myself! So I've gone back to wearing my black one 😆5

Yep, I swear some athletic clothing designers either don't sweat or don't exercise! I have had more that a few pairs of leggings I had to take out of the rotation for that reason.2 -

Yesterday was a few degrees cooler, which is such a big help. Like 72F instead of 77F, but I'll take it. It was even cooler this morning but, of course, I wasn't running today. Boooo! Why does it always seem like the best weather falls on non-running days?!3 -
I noticed a couple of people mentioned starting training for fall races. I have sort of started training for mine as well. With the heat, I was hesitant to jump into the plan I usually use because speed work in this weather just seems like a recipe for heat stroke. It's already so bad and traditionally August is quite a bit worse. And, this is a fun race. My A race is in January so I'll pick it up after the Nov race. No need to push the training 2 months early.
So anyway, I am modifying a Jeff Galloway plan. runDisney has a partnership with him and they send out training plans. I don't know if any of you have used these but they are mega-gentle. Gentle to the point that I'm actually making it harder, which I never do! First, they are 3 day a week plans so I'm adding in a 4th day because that's my routine, but I am enjoying the flexibility because life is hectic right now so if I miss a run here and there, technically I haven't deviated from the plan. How's that for some mental gymnastics? Silly but I like to feel like I'm sticking to the plan. Second, they are designed as run-walk plans so I am just running them. Third, they are 19 weeks plans. I have never seen a 19-week half marathon plan. But, that means the first several weeks are very low mileage, which is really helpful right now as I am rebuilding my fitness and contending with the worst of the summer weather. This, by the way, is the experienced runner plan.
Having really looked at these plans for the first time, I feel like I have some insight into why I see so many runners at these races that seem to be really new to racing and running in general. You can absolutely finish a HM with this plan and train basically from the couch in about 4 months.5
