Good morning. Today training called for an easy walk. I kept my pace at a 20 minute mile. I don’t know why it felt so much harder going slower but it was a chore. It could be that I was listening to an audio book instead of music and that made me less energetic. Do you guys listen to things to keep your mind occupied while exercising to pass the time better? If so what is your go to listen? When you have races or runs you go to that are long do you bring along something to listen or do you let your mind wonder? Just wondering!

Well tomorrow Jeff Galloway’s 10K training calls for a rest day. This will be a hard thing for me to do because I always feel I must keep moving.

Hazy sunshine, mid 60s F, with higher humidity and a light wind from the southeast today.
@julieannegannon When I listen to music, I usually listen to 50s and 60s music. But I also hear music in my head.
Today's songs were from the TV show "Captain Kangaroo," and if you're old enough to remember the Captain, Mr. Moose, Bunny Rabbit, and Mr. Green Jeans, you're pretty old.
"Clap your hands to the music;
do it all day long.
Busy hands are happy hands;
hands that can't go wrong."
...and
"He puts his needle through the holes,
his thread flies to and fro;
With his tiny awl he bores the holes,
hear the hammer's busy blows."
That's why I run alone.
When you pop in here claiming your December 2021 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?

My husbands favorite XM station is the 50’s channel. The music is pretty upbeat and some of the themes are totally different than today’s music. For instance, there are a lot of songs about food. And several about specific drinks (a rum and coca-cola song comes to mind). I could see it being good running music.
I don’t listen to anything anymore. I used to listen to music, then podcasts, then just phased it out altogether. I do still get songs stuck in my head or I talk to myself. On the rare occasion that I have a running buddy I tend to chat quite a bit.

This may sound weird, but I've yet to have a playlist better than the one in my head. Save for the times I want to erase the song stuck in my head.6

Yep, hot. I practiced my walking the aid stations strategy for this run. There are aid stations about every 1.5 miles, so I took a 20-30 sec walk and drank some water every mile and a half. Today, it felt much needed.
On my cool-down walk, I saw one of my neighbors outside and his sprinklers were on so I asked if he would mind if I walked through them and he said, “go right ahead!” I will run through sprinklers if there is no one around but with him standing right there I felt like I needed to ask permission. He was really nice about it and I think he thought it was funny.6 -
First run of the month. 14.2 mile trail run, average pace 10:23 min per mile and 1,553 feet of elevation.
Highly doubt I'll make my running goal this month as I'm a week behind, but going to see how close I can get to it.
August cumulative:
14.2/100 miles
1,553/10,000 feet of elevation6 -
@Tramboman I do remember watching Captain Kangaroo but do not remember those songs. Hahaha about that is the reason you run alone.
@martaindale I would probably ask permission too, if the person was standing there. Glad he allowed it and thought it was funny. He probably was wanting to do it himself.
@sweetdaisy13 Nice pace for that run! Our goals give us motivation as something to strive for. If you try hard and don't make it, no big deal. You are doing great.2 -
15 miles today. Hot out. Tried a new route, not gonna work unless they cut the weeds (no sidewalks). I ran the first 8, ran/walk the next 2 and the last 5 were mostly walking.

Last night (technically this morning) I ran the Pigeon Forge Midnight 8K. Race report in the spoiler below. Today a friend and I biked on the Greenways in Knoxville for 20 miles. The toughest part of the race was staying awake until the start. A friend and I drove down Saturday morning, did some shopping in nearby Knoxville, checked into the hotel and rested for about an hour before heading to the outlets for more shopping. Because of the shortage in help many of the stores closed at 6:00 and 8:00 pm instead of the usually 9:00 pm. We shopped until about 7:30 and decided we were hungry but didn’t want to eat a big meal so we grabbed a sandwich at Subway and ate it in the car in the parking lot. We then drove to packet pick-up which began at 9:30 pm in the parking lot of a local community center. After a bathroom stop, we drove to the start line which was a couple miles from packet pick-up. There we just hung out in the car until about 11:30 when we decided to get our legs warmed up.Welcome @DuchessDiona!
If you aren’t familiar with Pigeon Forge, it is a tourist town at the base of the Great Smoky Mountains. If there can be anything to take your money, it is there. Putt-putt, go-karts, rides, shopping, restaurants, etc. There are three lanes of traffic on each side and they are normally bumper-to-bumper every weekend. The race began with three hand cyclists taking off at 11:59 pm and the runners followed at midnight. The police diverted traffic to the two outside lanes with the inside lane on each side marked off with cones. It was a very flat course. We went out 2 miles, then circled back 2 miles, went ½ mile past the start/finish area and circled back ½ mile to finish.
I finished 4th in my age group (out of 9) and 102 overall (out of 141 finishers) with a time of 52:37 and a pace of 10:36 which was a decent time for me. My slowest mile was mile 4. I caught up with a little girl who I found out later was 9 years old, and she struggling, saying she wasn’t going to finish and that 1 mile was the farthest she had ever run. I walked with her for a few seconds and tried to encourage her as much as I could. She kept going and ended up finishing with a time of 58:00 which I thought was stellar!
@ContraryMaryMary – I don’t say this often, but that cake—way too beautiful to eat!!! I hope the party went fantastic! Hope you are feeling better and made it to your race.
@rheddmobile – If I could excel/qualify for any Olympic sport, I think it would be the trick bicycle riding. The little girl in me says gymnast though.
Sorry for the Garmin troubles @quilteryoyo. Good job getting the 10 miles done regardless of Garmin!
Oh goodness @alphahowls! So sorry for all the stings. Those can be so dangerous.

Great run @RunsOnEspresso . I hope they cut the weeds so you'll have a new place to run.
@Tramboman Now that you mention it, I remember the disembodied gloves, but still can't put a tune to the song.
Nice race @Teresa502 ! That is a great pace. Was there a lot of traffic in the outside lanes? I'm glad you stopped to encourage the 9 year old and that she was able to finish in such a good time.2 -

8/4: 4.67 miles
8/5: 5.35 miles
8/7: 7.06 miles

Today's run was interesting. Hal's plan called for 7 miles in 1 hr 8 minutes or a 9:43 pace. That's not as long as I usually run but it is faster than my usual long run pace. The run instructions said not to worry about pace just do the distance and enjoy the run. I was planning to try to keep my pace close to 10 minute miles and to only run 7 miles. But I wasn't sure I would be able to. I didn't get going until about 8:15. It was already 79°F feels like 81° and it was 85° feels like 92° by the time I was done.
I was not quite a mile into the run when I saw a man on a bicycle with 2 dogs. The dogs came up to me so I asked if they were his. He said no they just were following him. I told him that I had had dogs follow me before and we chatted a bit. The dogs wandered off and we both went on our way. But about half a block away the dogs joined me again. They were very friendly and ran with me the rest of the run. They were pretty good, but they were kind of young and one especially crossed in front of me several times and almost tripped me a couple of times. So I did end up running a little slower because I was keeping an eye on them. The first time he tripped me I didn't fall, but I jerked to a stop suddenly and my Garmin was about to send an emergency text to my husband. Luckily it gave me the option to cancel.
We encountered a few people on our run. The first was a boy who was in his front yard with an Australian Shepherd on a leash. I don't know him. But I have seen him before. The dogs ran over to check them out. I told the boy they weren't mine but they seemed nice. I was glad that his dog seemed friendly because you never know. I kept running and the dogs followed me and the boy asked me why they were following me. I said I guess they just wanted to run.
We also saw a man working on his car with a little girl "helping" him. She was probably about 4 and she was so cute. The dogs went over and I told the man they weren't mine but they seemed friendly. They seemed to like the girl and she was giggling and seemed to really like them.
Around this time I decided to start heading back and swing back through the area where I picked them up. Other times when dogs have followed me they have gone back home when we got back to their neighborhood bit these didn't. Of course I don't really know where they started following the man on the bike. I did see an older woman out in her yard and I asked her if she knew where they belonged. She didn't. While we were talking the dogs noticed that her water sprinkler was on. She had it on low and turned over so it was watering, but not a spraying. She turned it over for them and they enjoyed a nice drink. I thought they might stay there but they followed me home. I took some pictures of them and posted them on Facebook. No one seems to know who they belong to but someone saw them at the park the other day and apparently they ran with the cross country team the other day.
I saw Sunny the donkey too. He was in his house looking out the front window. I tried to take a picture, but he always sees me and by the time I get my phone out he's coming outside. So I did enjoy the run. I didn't run further than Hal suggested. I might have been slower than I was supposed to be. But I think I did alright.

Great race report @Teresa502. I think it would be hard to run that late.
@Tramboman I remember Captain Kangaroo, but only vaguely. I don't remember the songs.
When it comes to the Olympics as a kid I always wanted to be a gymnast.3 -
10k running and nearly 10 miles total. We’re back to being under a heat advisory again. In the 90s and heat index got as high as 101 when we were out running. Comparatively not bad - not as humid, breeze, decent cloud cover most of the way. What we did for water this time was start our run in the middle, run 5k one way, turn around, head back to the car, and swap out our empty water bottle for a new one which was filled with ice and stored in the cooler. Then took a mile walk break and ran 5k the other way, finished at the car, drank from our big insulated water bottle at the car, then walked. It worked really well, nice cold water the whole way and for once I wasn’t dehydrated when I got home.
My husband was having some trouble with the heat today towards the end of our second run, arm hair standing on end and feeling shivery, and like he was going to throw up. I didn’t have any trouble apart from my legs being tired because we haven’t gotten in enough running recently due to the heat. But we are gonna have to take care obviously. Some guy in California died recently on a run in 106 degree heat and it took them three weeks to find his body because he had apparently gotten disoriented and walked off the trail following a “game trail” which I assume means a deer track or something. He had left his phone back at the car, which doesn’t seem like a good plan to me! Anyway everyone be careful out there!
Speaking of deer, we passed a deer standing smack in the middle of the paved trail. She looked startled to see us. Apart from the deer we only saw bicyclists, I guess other runners thought it was too hot. One young man passed us on his cycle and yelled, “You guys are killing it!” My husband said “That guy is my spirit animal.” Seriously, his encouragement made a huge difference on a very hot run.
The other thing that made a difference was that there were Indian dancers practicing with drums at the park, and we could hear them most of the way along the Greenline. @Tramboman that was the soundtrack to my running today! But usually I run to the 50s and 60s music in my head as well. Part of today’s run was to “Dem Bones” by the Four Lads. I can remember Captain Kangaroo from my childhood but don’t remember the music. I just remember liking Mr Green Jeans!3 -

I like to listen to audiobooks usually. My reading list is really long, so I like being able to "read" and run at the same time! I have noticed though that my pace picks up when there's a lot of drama or action going on, and it mellows out during more thoughtful or descriptive passages. But I also do that if I'm just thinking my own thoughts!3 -
Very nice 10K @Teresa502! So nice of you to encourage that little girl!!! I'm mostly impressed that you were able to stay up and race at midnight!
@rheddmobile scary about your husband's reaction to the heat. Not surprising in the those conditions you two run in, but I would be concerned...that sounds serious.
A short 5 miles this morning. Nothing felt good about this run. It was hot, it was slow, I felt uncoordinated, everything hurt. Just Monday I guess.

Working from home today so I got to sleep a little later and run on my hilly road. I usually see no one but I saw a friend from high school whom I haven’t seen in several years so I stopped to talk to him for a few minutes. He insisted on a hug even though I was a sweaty mess. The second half of the run I could get a whiff of his after-shave on me. I’m pretty sure I got the better end of that deal. Poor guy will probably be smelling my sweat all day.
@kgirlhart – Did anyone ever claim the dogs? I bet Sunny the donkey comes out of the house because he wants to run with you also!
2 -
@kgirlhart I love Sunny sightings. I told my husband about him this morning and showed him your picture of Sunny on his porch. He really got a kick out of it. The dogs certainly look well cared for. I hope they find their way home.
@Teresa502 Great race! Glad you were there to encourage that girl. Honestly, if that were my kid she would have been so tired/up past her bedtime that she wouldn't be able to cope with running several miles. You both finished with very respectable times! Sorry I’m so far behind on the thread I’ll need to catch up.
Skip had her Sprint Tri this weekend. She did really good, she ended up 111 out of 225 (5 out of 9 in AG and 38 of 100 women), her hardest event was the swimming, but we knew it would be, she got in the pool and was all messed up with stroke, so at the end of the second lap I stopped her and told her take a deep breath, center yourself and go slow and steady strokes. She did that and it helped a lot. Ever been to a swim meet inside? Now picture that noise level with 75 people in a pool with many who don’t swim well, ha ha it was crazy. They really did a great job of running the whole event. Only hiccup for her was someone 30 minutes before the start tried to put air in her tire and broke the valve stem ugh. The local bike place replaced the tube in like 5 minutes flat and she was set. She had a great time finished 5K, 7 mile bike, 400m swim in 1:08, her transition time was around 3 minutes. In the spoiler are some pictures. Her poor running pictures, I have amazing pictures of other people, but I start talking to her and I moved up on a hill so I could run back to the transition area to see her there. It was like XC all over again with running from place to place.

Happy Monday!
August 9th - 6.48 miles

Have a fantastic week everyone!5 -
@skippygirlsmom Skip did a GREAT job on her first Tri! That is a tough 1:08. Hope she enjoyed it.0

@Scott6255 thank you, she said it was harder than a marathon and wants to do another. She goes now into marathon training for her December marathon.5

Yes! She also has a water park and Dixie Stampede. She has done so much for that county. Not only with revenue from the parks but supporting the local schools and youth. During the fires a couple of years ago, she donated money to each resident affected by them.1 -
Yay for Skip @Skippygirlsmom! That is great for her first tri. I hear they are won in the transition areas. My friend who ran with me this weekend has done a few so is a beginner herself and struggles with the swim part. She also gets flustered if there are a lot of other swimmers around her making the pool choppy. I'm glad that you were there to calm her down and get her back on track!3
