@julieannegannon ouch! I'm sure that fall stung a bit, but kudos for getting back up and finishing the run! I'm sure it really stung when you got in the shower 😩. Hope you take it easy the rest of the day.
11 miles this morning. Didn't feel too bad today, apart from the oppressive heat and humidity. But for some reason it didn't bother me as much as it has in the past. Maybe because I only did 11 miles, or maybe my body is starting to get used to this crap weather ☀️😎 But no niggles.

@julieannegannon oh ouch, that sounds like a hard fall to trip over a speed bump you can't see. Hope you won't be too sore.
@polskagirl01 hope you have a great race today!

I usually meet up with people for long run on Saturday mornings, but I knew a lot of people were out of town or doing races today, and I did my longer run yesterday. I found one friend up for a shorter run at a little later time than usual and we both enjoyed sleeping in a bit and being less ambitious for a Saturday. Now I will pack up to head to the Adirondacks for what I hope will be an awesome hike tomorrow. The weather sounds pretty perfect. It's a long one, so I may not be back to check in right away but I should have some fabulous pics to share.
Great running everyone. Enjoy your weekend.8 -
@julieannegannon - I had the Aftershoktz Trekz Titanium headphones for a few years but kept having problems with them. I will say the company was great and kept replacing them but it just got to be too frustrating. I replaced them, or rather my husband replaced them for me at Christmas with the Beats Powerbeats Pro and I love them. They are easy to use fit well and integrate with my phone. I can get a call or text messages (Siri reads them) so I never have to take them out my phone when I am running.
I don't have a Garmin, I use my Apple Watch with Strava on it. However that is because that was what I had when I started running and it works well for me. I like all the other functions of my Apple Watch, don't really went or need to have a separate running watch. That said if I were going to get a running watch now I would definitely get a Garmin.
Hope you aren't too banged up from your fall. If you can get out for a walk (or laps in your house where it is cool) that has helped me in the past avert the ongoing stiffness after a fall.4 -
It's funny how running can be so difficult one day and easy the next. Yesterday felt like I wanted to throw in the towel and today? Legs were like YAYYYYYYY RUNNING!
I was scheduled for 8 and signed up for Pat's Run 10k (virtual) so I did a mile warm up, ran my 10k at a smidge past easy, and then did a mile cool down. It was only 73° and cloudy so no glowing ball of doom but it was 97% humidity. It was also trying to sprinkle. Either way I was soaked by the time I was done 🤣

10.2 mile run, average pace of 9:44 min per mile with 677 feet of elevation.
I've worn a knee support overnight to bed for the past couple of nights and my knee isn't hurting when I wake up. I've also stopped doing squats and wall sit exercises this past 3 weeks or so, as a process of elimination to find out why my right knee hurts.
My conclusion is that at night I move about so much when I sleep and I tend to sleep with my knees bent, I think this is causing the knee pain and it has nothing to do with running or isometric exercises.
Therefore, I'm going to continue to wear the knee support to bed in the hope that it helps...and if it doesn't, then I'm back to square one.
August cumulative:
35.3/100 miles

25.5 of 30 mile goal for August. Looks like I'll have to up my goal for Sept.8

Race report: I made it to the finish line on my own two feet!!!
25km, 1537m elevation
Profile (conveniently printed upside down on bottom of race numbers) and medal: Long version:Weather: beautiful sunny day, a bit warmer than optimal for running though. Not that there was much actual running...Pics:
Slowest start to a race I've ever experienced. This was good. I was afraid everyone would take off, and I'd be left as the only one power-hiking at the end. But apparently, hike-up-jog-down was a very popular strategy.
We had 3 hours to get to the aide station at 15k (after about 800-something meters of elevation up and then down). You would think an hour per 5k would be easy-peasy, but the uphill was frequently steep and downhills had loose rocks and steep sections and it didn't always feel safe running. I hurried on the downhill and got to the cutoff point with 4 minutes to spare (maybe more if they factored in the delayed start time). At this point, we were joined by the marathon and 60k runners for the rest of the course. They obviously had a head start of several hours. I had a slice of watermelon, 1/2 banana, cola (filled small soft flask), refilled water in pack, splashed water from stream on face, grabbed a pastry and started walking up the next ascent.
I'm not sure they were enforcing the cutoff. A lot of people came through after me, and I know this because many of them passed me on that ascent. It was a brutal never-ending 3.8 kilometers of what-am-I-doing-here and "can I make it 10 steps without stopping to try to catch my breath" and "is that guy ahead of me ever going to finally puke", and wondering if I myself was going to puke, would it help, maybe if I just sit down briefly... some [many] others were struggling; some hiked right by.
OH and my watch was driving me NUTS. Totally my fault - I didn't turn off autopause, and my uphill speed, or lack thereof, kept triggering it. I can't change it during an activity, and got tired of pressing the cancel button, so finally just let it beep repeatedly on and off, which resulted in an inaccurate activity time, and it robbed me of about a kilometer by the end. I considered turning it off, but it was doing a good job showing me the route, and was at least giving me some sort of # for distance, even if I suspected it was short. Next time: Turn off autopause!!!!!!!
Finally I made it to the top and passed the famous stone lodge and a sign "7K to go", then started down. My legs didn't want to work right at first, but soon caught on somewhat to a slow and careful descent jog, off and on, until it mostly flattened out. There were just 3 little bumps left on the elevation profile, hardly noticeable on the course compared to what we'd already done, but hard nonetheless. I just kept going, running a little, hiking a lot, until I could hear the finish line and started running more. Just before the final turn, I saw a familiar face (speedy guy from run club who'd finished probably hours earlier), got a high-five, saw my son swinging on the playground and cheering for me as I went past, then husband and daughter at the finish line.
Whew. That was hard.
And totally worth it.
But more mountain-specific training next time.
Pics are all out of order but whatever10 -

I saw four shooting stars this morning….I think I did anyway. I started around 4:45 am because I had some other morning obligations. My battery on my light died about 1.5 miles in but I know the road pretty good so I just kept going. I live out in the country so no street lights and what few neighbors I have were still in bed – imagine that on a Saturday morning – haha. A storm had rolled through before midnight but the sky had cleared up and was just full of stars.
Ouch @julieannegannon – Glad you weren’t more seriously injured in your fall. Darn speedbumps!
Congratulations @polskagirl01! What a tough course but you did it!!! That’s a beautiful medal.
Congrats on your virtual 10K @RunsonEspresso!

@julieannegannon Glad you weren't hurt too bad when you fell. Hope you aren't too sore from it.
@Tramboman Hope you get your energy back soon! You're doing great for feeling drained.
@Scott6255 Great run and glad there were no niggles today! About the time you get used to the heat and humidity, it goes away. I can live with that though. I'm so looking forward to cooler weather.
@katharmonic Enjoy your hike. Looking forward to hearing/seeing all about it.
@RunsOnEspresso Glad you had such a good run today!
Nice run @sweetdaisy13 . I hope wearing the support to bed is all that is needed to stop the knee pain.
Great running @Gmcgovern41 !
@polskagirl01 That sounds like a really tough race. You did great! Love the pictures.
@Teresa502 I'm in awe that you got out that early to run. Glad you didn't have any issues without your light.

Amazing job on that tough race @polskagirl01! Wow! It makes me wonder how it compares to something like the hike I'm doing tomorrow. I will have to look at the elevation profiles. You are tough!
Great job on your virtual 10k @RunsOnEspresso. So nice to have a good run.
Nice running everyone.3 -

I had intended to get up early enough to get out to run by 7. Nope. Didn't get out of the house until almost 8:30! The temperature was 72°F with 94% humidity. It was cloudy to begin with, but the sun soon decided to make an appearance.
My plan called for 10 miles, with the last mile being a bit faster than the rest. I ran for an hour at an easy pace and then stopped to talk to my mom and William, the neighbor that helps me with mom's lawn when he is in town. My brother had mowed most of the lawn with his zero turn this morning, but it had stopped working, so there was a little extra that would have to be mowed with the push mower. I knew we were going to do her lawn today, but I had planned on doing my part after the run, and a short rest - so around 1 pm. However, William had a lot of things he needed to get done this afternoon, so wanted to get the trimming done sooner, rather than later. Since he is kind enough to help, I just cut my run short - finished out five mile, ate a bite, and then went back to mom's to push mow while he weed eat. By the time we finished, I was done. I didn't have any more running left in me.
I started my HM plan early, so have an extra week before the race. I had been trying to decide which week I should repeat. I think I got my answer today. I'm just repeat this week next week and then I'll be right on schedule. I am going to remember that I really, really need to get up and start earlier for my long run - esp if it is still this hot and humid.5 -
@polskagirl01 - awesome job on your trail race! It looks brutal and the elevation profile really challenging. I would be terrified of falling, honestly.
@scott6255 - I keep hoping I am adjusting to the heat but it still feels awful at times. I guess running in the 90s makes it feel better when it is only 80F! I am actually hoping running in the heat now will make it not so horrible for my HM in September. It will be fine at the beginning but by the finish it will likely be in the mid-80's.
Have fun on your hike @katharmonic. I am looking forward to your hiking report!
@Tramboman - I think the endless heat is making a lot of us feel drained with or without a race. Hang in there - it will get better eventually (I was going to say soon but it may be a few weeks at least).
@quilteryoyo - I'm right there with you on needing to get up earlier for my long runs! Today I got up early but didn't get out until after 11 and it wasn't bad but by the time I was out 4 miles it was in the high 80's and so humid so I just cut it short and headed home.
I got out yesterday and was feeling great so ended up running a bit further than planned especially with a long run planned for today. So today I wasn't feeling it, my legs were tired and I almost didn't go. I am glad I did once I was out there and my legs loosened up enough to actually run more than my 60/30 intervals. I am having an issue though with my calves getting tight and cramping. I suspect I am getting dehydrated late in the run despite stopping for water along the way. Also my feet have been getting so hot - like I can feel the heat of the paved trail. I can generally feel the heat radiating off the pavement but I don't recall my feet actually feeling hot from it before. I tried to run in the dirt when I can but there are too many rocks to do it practically.

Happy Sunday everyone!!
Sorry for my absence and I am going to have a read through the July and August posts to catch up on everyone's successes.
Nothing for me. I have been seeing a physio for 3 months who told me I had to go running a couple of weeks a go. I did C25K Week 1, Day 1 and was limping for the rest of the week so she is kicked to the kerb. Would anyone object if I finished the rest of the 'Run the World' challenge with walks? I am going to have to stick to cycling to and from work.
Back on the weight loss programme and down from 114.20kg to 112.35kg this week. Rock on another big week.
Hope you are all having fun.9 -

@shanaber I'm glad I'm not the only one who sleeps in and then regrets is. LOL Sounds like you are doing great in these conditions. We all need to listen to our bodies and allow ourselves to cut a run short if we need to. Glad you were able to run more than your 60/30 intervals. Maybe you need to increase your electrolytes when running in the heat to prevent the cramps. I'm also with you, hoping that running in the heat will make my Sept HM feel not so horrible.polskagirl01 wrote: »TheMrWobbly wrote: »Happy Sunday everyone!!

Mostly cloudy, upper 50s F, and a refreshing north wind. Decided I was going to do 7k today, and although it took me 3k to loosen up, finished out the run well. Yesterday's music in my head was Lesley Gore's "It's My Party;" today was Marty Robbins' "They're Hangin' Me Tonight." Again, it's clearly evident why I need to run alone. BUT... today's harbinger of joy was a bloom on my lilac. That was counterbalanced by today's harbingers of doom -- saw goldenrods and purple asters blooming.
When you pop in here claiming your December 2021 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
PUT THE FUN BACK IN THE RUN!

Just got back from a "little" family hike. It was only 4 km, but was pretty steep (*cue kid drama). There were graves of partisan fighters at the top, but otherwise no exciting view, surprisingly "Bald Mountain" was covered with tall pine trees at the top. Must be a very old name, or named for the witch gatherings that apparently happen there(?!) Anyway it was alright, downhill was hard for sore muscles and the whole thing might've been a bit much in that regard, but I'm chilling the rest of the day, watching the final stage of that bike race on TV.
View of the mountains I conquered yesterday. Red is approximately the route, and the purple shows where we went down the other side, then back up.8 -
@Tramboman Glad your run finished well. I saw goldenrods blooming here yesterday and thought "Allergies. Here we come." but I haven't seen as many ragweeds as normal, so hopefully the allergies won't be too bad this fall. Congrats on the lilac bloom.
@polskagirl01 Glad you had a nice family hike today - even with kid drama. That is a lovely, but steep mountain to run. You did great!1 -
Nice easy Sunday run - 7.05 miles.
Total MTD - 62.02 Miles.

@julieannegannon Good job getting your run done after the fall. Hope you feel ok after!
@Tramboman Hope you feel better soon!
@katharmonic Enjoy your hike. Looking forward to hearing/seeing all about it.
Great work getting to your goal this month @Gmcgovern41 !
@polskagirl01 Good job on a really tough course!

Congrats on another race @polskagirl01 ! Lovely pics!0

@Tramboman - I often end up with "It's My Party" in my head when I am running and now I have it and can't make it go away!
Why are goldenrods and purple asters blooming a sign of doom? I love lilacs and just wish they would grow and do well here but mostly not. It never gets cold enough for them.
@polskagirl01 - that race you did was brutal but I still love where you get to run! Hope the kids 'survived' the hike!3 -

Yesterday was my husband’s birthday, my daughter’s climbing team tryouts, the good-bye party for one of her coaches, and my long run day. The entire family was up before 6 am. I went running (yep, hot and humid) and my husband dropped our daughter off at tryouts.
On my run, I knew I would need to refill my water bottle so I detoured to this little dog park and discovered I was locked out! They had keycard locks so only the residents could use it. Luckily, I spotted a spigot that I am assuming the landscape crew uses that was outside of the locked area so I splashed water on myself and refilled my water bottle. I’m glad to know it’s there. I use this route a lot for my longer runs because it is a nice 6.5-ish miles that connects to a few other areas I frequent, so it is easy to build onto as my training plan grows but I have not run this amount of mileage in the heat of summer before so the water has not been as big of an issue. I really never scoped out the water situation on this loop before and aside from the spigot, there is no refill point. Good to know. There are a lot of parks and green spaces in the neighborhood but I guess the assumption is that people don’t need water fountains because they are close enough to home to just bring something to drink with them. It definitely adds a layer of planning to my warm weather long runs to work out where the water is.
The run was tough and despite trying to keep the pace easy and take my planned walk breaks every 1.5 miles, I still had to take a couple of extra walk breaks in the last segment, but I felt ok at the finish and I’m not sore today. For my husbands b-day he requested homemade brownies, so I had a brownie and some ice cream for dessert last night and it was amazing!7 -
@polskagirl01 - that race you did was brutal but I still love where you get to run! Hope the kids 'survived' the hike!

August Goal: 75 Miles
8/1: 6.50 miles
8/3: 5.16 miles
8/4: 4.67 miles
8/5: 5.35 miles
8/7: 7.06 miles

8/11: 5.10 miles
8/12: 5.26 miles
8/15: 7.62 miles
51.74/75 miles completed for August
My HM training plan officially started today. I was finally able to see the plan yesterday. It does look pretty good. I was kind of disappointed because today just called for 3 miles. If it had been a paper plan instead of the app I would probably just have waited and started it on Tuesday. Sunday is my long run day and I really like to run at least an hour and a half. So I ran the 3 miles that Hal prescribed. He said 3 miles at 10:05 - 10:45 min/mi. Or 3 miles in 31 minutes at a 10:24 min/mi average. I ran 3.11 miles in 33 minutes at 10:44 min/mi. After I uploaded my run to the Run with Hal app I restarted my watch and ran 4.5 miles. So I ended up with 7 61 miles. The second run was much slower than the first and I didn't upload this run to Hal. I kind of felt like I was cheating, but I kind of didn't care. I am planning to try to stick with the plan as much as I can, but Sunday is my day that I have time to run longer and I just didn't want to only run 3 miles. I am usually just starting to get into my groove when I get to 3 miles. Today's run was pretty good, but it was hot and humid. I didn't get out as early as I intended. @rheddmobile I don't know how you and your husband manage to run in the heat of the day. I started out about 8:45 am and finished around 10:15 and it was brutal out there. Most of my runs are at 5:30 am and it's usually dark for most of the run and it is still pretty hot. But once that sun comes out it is really miserable I was a puddle of sweat when I got home.
Congratulations on your race @polskagirl01! That sounds really challenging.
@TheMrWobbly Of course you can.
@quilteryoyo You are going to do great on your Half. And I am another one who regrets not getting up earlier on long run days. I don't have as much trouble on days that I have to be at work afterwards, but on the weekends I really like to sleep in.
