@martaindale Nice job on the run and finding the much needed water supply. Happy Birthday to your husband! A brownie and ice cream sounds yummy.
@kgirlhart Cheating on Hal on the first day. SMH. Sounds like you had a good run, despite getting out later and it being so hot and humid. Thanks for your support on my half. We shall see. I still haven't made my hotel reservations!3 -

The heat finally broke! We had flash floods Friday then Saturday was very humid and dank, but Sunday was almost pleasant even in the afternoon. By a certain measure of pleasant anyway, the temperature was between 83 and 89 while we were out, and the heat index got up to 98. But after running in 128, 98 felt normal!
We did 5k twice with a mile walk between to cool down and refill water, and then a two mile trail hike. First 5k was almost at a decent pace for us, it’s amazing what a difference the weather makes. We’ve been crawling along at 11 and even 12 minute mile pace when it was so hot, the same effort today was a 10 minute pace. The downhill middle mile was actually 9:23 which is pretty much a tempo pace for us. It just felt so nice to have the breeze feel like a breeze and not a hairdryer! Slowed down a lot on the second run. We have some catching up to do after not running much recently due to the heat, and my legs felt exhausted. Hoping to work back up to an 8 mile weekly long run.
I got lucky on eBay and found a brand new in box pair of my favorite discontinued Brooks adrenaline 18s! They changed these shoes completely for the 19 and 20 and I hate them now, I have been buying decent used pairs whenever I can find them. But a brand new pair with a box and everything, is it my birthday or something?8 -
So just a curiosity question... If you didn't have to get up at oh-dark 30 because of work or whatever would you still get up that early to run?
I no longer need to be up early for work and find it so difficult to get up and out the door... I fool myself into thinking I and 'best training; but honestly it would be so much easier if I just got up earlier regularly.2 -
@shanaber yes I would still get up early to run if I didn't have to work. That's when it is the coolest, and I don't take time away from anyone in the family while they sleep.
Now that I think about it, if I was retired, I might need to get out of the house just to get away from the family 😁4 -

I am a stay-at-home mom, but I do plan around getting back before my children wake up. That said, I've always been a morning person and I love being up before everyone else is when everything is quiet. I definitely need that time without other people. Right now, as @Scott6255 says, I also like that it's cooler. Maybe in the winter time, if I didn't have kids at home, I'd be more likely to run in the middle of the day. The roads would already be plowed and sidewalks shoveled, for the most part. But passing cars would also be throwing sleet at me. Hm.

Today would normally be a rest day of golf, but the rain says otherwise. Doubt that a day of actual rest, not dragging my clubs around the course, will hurt my legs any.
When you pop in here claiming your December 2021 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
PUT THE FUN BACK IN THE RUN!

@shanaber - I get up earlier on weekends than weekdays for my runs (walks currently). In my case it's that I can not do it later after the kids are up (complicated) and a long time/distance can only be done super early.
Without work or kids to consider, I would likely sleep in though. Or take naps.3 -
@rheddmobile Glad you got some relief from the heat. You did great with your run. And YEAH for scoring those shoes!
@shanaber I'm right there with you. I can not get myself out of bed when I don't HAVE to. Take this morning for instance. I set the alarm for 5:45 and kept hitting the snooze until I finally made myself get up at 7:30. When I got up this morning, I thought if I am going to do that, I shouldn't even set the alarm. I'd at least get better sleep for that extra 1.5 hours.
Glad your last 3 miles were good @Scott6255 !

So just a curiosity question... If you didn't have to get up at oh-dark 30 because of work or whatever would you still get up that early to run?
During the summer, definitely. I'm with @Scott6255 in that it's just too hot to wait much later. During the winter I'd probably go about 9-10 after I ate breakfast and had a couple cups of coffee if I had my druthers.
My work schedule has gotten earlier and my running is early, so now I pretty much get up by 6:30-7 even if I'm really trying to sleep in. I also really like the peace and quiet of the morning and the accomplishment of getting my run in before my day even really gets started!3 -

I’m trying to catch up on the thread.
I spend the Thursday – Sunday moving Skip to college for her senior year. We left Thursday, she moved in Friday morning, Saturday we did a little running around campus (very little too busy fooling around), then she had her first day at her new job with ESPN+, Sunday early I drove home. I can’t believe she’s a senior already. Here are pictures of her at work, she started 2 hours before game time (girls soccer game) they set up everything, she was supposed to shadow the technical director since that’s the job she wants after school, but a 2.5 hour weather delay messed that up. I guess employees don’t all have her work ethic and 4 of them left (1 before the game even started) and 3 during the weather delay. They asked her to go on the field and do camera work..ugh? She said sure I can do it but my camera experience is with people sitting behind a desk not running. Good thing is she played soccer from 5 years old until her Freshman year of high school so she knows the game, so knowing when it was a goal kick vs a corner etc helped her know where to be pointing the camera. Jag Nation who is the school TV station tweeted that she did a great job (so momma proud), she loved it! Too many pictures in the spoiler.
@shanaber I tend to get up early even on my days off to run, especially in the summer when it’s so hot.

So cool about Skip working at ESPN+ @skippygirlsmom!! She looks like a natural behind (and in front) of a camera! I know you are soooooo proud!!!2

@skippygirlsmom It seems like yesterday I was congratulating you on Skip’s high school graduation! Wow she’s a senior! Great photos.3

8/15 - 1 mile
August total: 1 mile
I guess I'll log the one mile test run on my foot which I did during yesterday's walk. I haven't noticed any changes for the worse with that plantar fasciitis today, so I'll be doing some more brief run tests during some of my walks over the next few weeks.
I figure I'll keep my current walk mileage and run on it twice this week for a mile during a walk, then if no issues I'll try 3 times next week. Then maybe build the mileage slowly from there, or work towards 4 or 5 days/week. Just not sure what is best at this time but going to play it safe as I go.
The issue never seemed to go away, just subside. I was able to walk several miles daily with no issues, but have noticed downhills, particularly steep downhills and down stairs being a touch sensitive. Not sure what to make of that except limit the amount of hills.
So far my approach has been to walk on it as long as it doesn't hurt it, and will use that same approach with the additional running.4 -
@skippygirlsmom Yeah for Skip! That work ethic is going to get help her rise in the ranks quickly.
@WhatMeRunning Sounds like your plan is working. Hope you are able to run more soon without any pain.

I had intended to get up early this morning to get my run in so I would have the rest of the day to do some paperwork and make some phone calls regarding my cousin. I went to bed late, so when the alarm went off, I knew I didn't HAVE to get up. I hit the snooze for 1.5 hours and finally got up. LOL
Today's plan called for a tempo run: 5 min zone 1, 5 min zone 2, 44 min Zone 3, 5 min zone 2, 5 min zone 1. Not sure why the 44 minutes...I did 45. I got out of the house at 8:50. It was 72°F with 94% humidity. I had a hard time getting my HR into Zone 3. I felt I was running at a pace that was faster than usual and one that I could sustain for more than a minute or two - I called it medium to medium hard on my "by feel" scale. My legs and heart apparently thought it was easy, but my lungs didn't get the memo. It was just so hard to breath in that humidity...at least I am assuming that was the cause. I had to stop at 2 miles to pee. I took this picture then. You can see the sweat dripping off of my nose and streaming down my face.
When I figured my stats, I did run at an average pace of 13:15 min/mile. That's pretty good for a driveway run. I also estimated from the Garmin Connect graph the distance I ran during the 25 minutes of the tempo pace. It was almost 2 miles so a 12:41 min/mile pace. I'm really pleased with that, given the elevation gained for the entire run was 1,110 feet.5 -
@skippygirlsmom - so awesome for Skip.
@polskagirl01 nice job getting a hike in while recovering from your race. I'm not going to tell my trainer that quote "if you're getting enough air to complain...you're fine". Ha, love it.
@rheddmobile and others, very glad for the break in the extreme heat for you.
@WhatMeRunning glad to hear your test run seems successful.
@TheMrWobbly good to see you check in. Walking counts in my book too!
@quilteryoyo I know that snoozing for over an hour feeling. I am not a born early-moring runner and I wish I was. Great job on your tempo run!2 -
Hike report from yesterday - I summited 5 of the 46 official [Adirondack high peaks and 1 extra that doesn't count (but exceeds the 4000 ft elevation criteria. It took 12 hours 43 minutes and clocked in at 20 miles (Garmin over-estimates). I'm now at 40/46 - just 6 peaks left.
Hike report (long) under first spoilerAn epic and picture-perfect day hiking the Lower Great Range with my new hiking friend Courtney. We started at a little after 6 am - last time needing to park at the AMR lot and walk up Lake Road! This time we walked all the way out to Lower Ausable Lake about 4 miles on the road before turning off onto the AW Weld trail to head to Sawteeth. We first stopped by Rainbow Falls, which was gorgeous and had rainbows, as advertised. The hike up the Weld trail I had read was "gentle" as compared to the scenic route and we took it to save some time on a big day. I wouldn't have described it quite that way and found it plenty strenuous going up. We summitted Sawteeth about 9:30 am, and the blue skies were amazing. We had definitely worked up a sweat and were surprised when we arrived and some girls were saying the wind was cold up there. We proceeded to the lookout point and made sure to get to the actual summit and then came back to sit on the rocks and enjoy the view and have some snacks and quickly understood as we got chilled sitting there. Time for long sleeve shirt #2.
The hike from Sawteeth to Pyramid (which for some reason doesn't count) was some of the steepest of the hike and we worked for that one. We arrived a little after 11 and laid down gratefully on top of that flat rock summit. I could have taken a nice nap while enjoying the view. But we had a long day to go yet so got back up and headed over to Gothics, which we could see looming in the so close but yet so far distance.
The trip to Gothics was pretty short from there and not so bad as we had already done most of the elevation getting to Pyramid. Just a tiny down then up and we were there by 11:40. This was a pretty big summit with amazing views of all the mountains around and there were a few other people up there enjoying a break. We had some more food and worked on identifying all the peaks we could see, starting to get a much better feel for how they relate to each other. And Marcy is always the easy one to identify and it's fun to spot and orient to it.
Armstrong was next and we were surprised there was a lot more going down than up to get there. We arrived just before 1:00 and enjoyed another break identifying peaks and enjoying the incredible day. Armstrong and Upper Wolfjaw were new to Courtney who had done the others separately, so she was excited to be adding to her numbers finally. We headed over to Upper Wolfjaw next. Lots more heading down and some of it quite steep. There was a ladder in one section and others that could have used a ladder I thought (and my left upper leg/butt agrees with me after a slip left a nasty bruise). We were on UWJ at 2:15 and didn't stay too long on that small summit, gearing up for the final push.
We could see LWJ in it's pointiness and some other peak in front of it that we hoped we wouldn't have to go over (some BS mountain as Sheley would say. Turns out I just found out the is Middle Wolfjaw). But of course we did. I had been told that between the Wolfjaws and summiting LWJ was a tough section, and it indeed was a beast. A steep descent to the notch and then a steep relentless climb on tired legs for summit #5 (6 really!) of the day. We were once again soaking wet with sweat and then quickly chilled sitting on that summit for another last refuel. I was happy I had tucked a light windbreaker in my bag to have one more option with sleeves. It was 4 pm and peak #40 was done. The view was not the best, but I was happy to be there.
We geared up for the hike out, which proved to be a tough descent and the typically never-ending feeling. I started to look forward to slight uphills because the downhill was just hammering away at the legs and feet. Finally we hit the flatter parts of the trail and started to see signs of civilization in the form of boards over mud patches and some hand rails. And then the Canyon bridge and back over to our old friend the Lake Road. Just a "short" almost 2 miles back to the parking lot from there, but I was happy to see the road and know it was "gentle".
We arrived at the car at 7 pm. 12 hours and 43 minutes (or right about there, Garmin died at 12 hours in and I missed a few minutes before starting Strava - which is why the GPX track ends too early here). We were feeling exhausted but accomplished - a huge day to get 5 done, and get to 40 for me and 28 for Courtney. We saw a mother and her maybe 12 year old son who we talked to on the Lake Road on the way out, they were going to do Gothics and Sawteeth as a loop that day, and do Wright, Algonquin and Iroquois the next. They were back at their car looking happy and they had taken their time and enjoyed some "camp food" and coffee and relaxed at the summits. It was fun to connect with them at the beginning and the end.
We said our goodbyes and I changed and headed over to Stewart’s for a big coffee and some food. The drive home was hard but I sang my way through it and arrive at home a little after 11. Showered and crawled into bed, where I fell asleep immediately.

I finally feel my body is working as it should - all those niggles have gone - the foot, the hip, the shoulder. Hooray. Today's run felt smooth and even, although my glutes and hamstrings were a little tired from yoga and ballet yesterday.
Onwards and upwards. Four weeks till my next half, or is it a 10k? - I haven't decided yet.8 -
@katharmonic Great hiking! I bet you'd do great at something like my recent race. You've probably already got the fitness for it.
It was a big deal for me, but there are a bunch of people from my running club who run those sort of mountains regularly as training runs. They were all still encouraging to me though. It's amazing what our bodies can adapt to! And now I want to get better at it.6 -

Good morning everyone. Today training was a long run of 1.5 miles. Very short run. Weather was shot but finally no thunderstorms. Yesterday was a rest day which I needed after my fall on Saturday. Nothing except my hands were hurting me. They took the brunt of the fall. They are still a little tender and black and blue. Have scrapes on my right leg and arm but no bruises there.

Awesome hiking (and pictures) @katharmonic! You have to be in really good shape to tackle those mountains.
Great to hear you are feeling so much better @ContraryMaryMary! But sad to hear you are all in lockdown again
@quilteryoyo good job on your HM training! You are doing so well and being so consistent.
6.5 miles this morning. Did a little bit of speed work today, just to say I did it. But it wasn't pretty (or fun).

@WhatMeRunning Glad to hear you are easing back into running. I hope the PF gives you a break.
@quilteryoyo You are doing a great job!
@katharmonic Awesome hike! I love hiking so much and can’t wait for the weather to chill a little so I can get back out there. Until then, I’ll live vicariously through you!
@Tramboman I hope your hamstring feels better.
@julieannegannon Good work on your run!3 -

It was just a few degrees cooler (75F) and minimally less humid (93%) this morning but it made a big difference. I have been working on slowing down, trying to bring my heart rate average down a bit. If I just look at the zones, it looks like I’m max effort all the time. I’m not, but for some reason, my heart rate climbs pretty quickly then stays high no matter the effort. It will be higher on actual hard effort days, like 170-ish vs 160-ish, but it’s always high nonetheless. I have been trying to shift more of my zone 5 into zone 4, and today’s looked pretty good even though I did let the pace get away from me a little at one point. Slowing down is definitely helping with the temp tolerance, too. I just have to check my watch more frequently because when I run by feel my legs tend to fall into my usual pace which is just too fast for this heat.6
