The Sober Squad- Alcohol Free Living

RubyRed gave us an excerpt from the Alcohol Explained website and I would like to add, the author, William Porter's book, "Alcohol Explained" is THE best book I have read on this topic and I have read plenty of them. It is a no nonsense book about exactly what alcohol does to our bodies and it is not pretty. You come away from it knowing there are truly no benefits, any more than smoking has any.
I'd also like to add that as long as you are mindful, even if you slip up, you ARE making progress.
Time for me to reread Porter's book. I think I've gotten lazy ... back to treating this sober life seriously. Tonight, I came home from my first day at work and drank a 00 Heineken. I told myself "Ruby, you do not want to have a headache on your second day."
I had no hangovers for 9 months during the last school year. I remember looking forward to weekends because I knew I would be able to do anything I wanted without doubt.
August has been a good month so far. Two drinks in 16 days is not bad. But like I said, I am better sober. It's so much less stress.5 -

Hi JenT (and all other posters), I am ALL IN! I officially announce my "DAY 1" will be Wednesday, August 18th, 2021 (because it will my 63rd birthday and I would like that date to be my "Soberversary", but I actually began abstaining as of August 11th. (I guess I could call it my "detox week"!) I was never a daily drinker but a "binger", which basically means, "No 'OFF' button" after the first one! (*VERY* dangerous!) I must accept that I need to be 100% alcohol-FREE! I even made a little rhyme about it: "I'm one of the ones who can't have just one; so I have decided that I should have NONE!"
Wishing the best to everyone - we can do this!
I am with you on the no off button. That is me to the tee!!!
Happy birthday and congratulations on day 1!!!4 -
Hi guys!!! Checking in…
Today is day 9 for me. I’ve been to 7 AA meetings in the last 9 days. I’m not going to hit 90/90, but likely somewhere around 70!!
I am really embracing the program. I never thought I would like the structured approach, but that is exactly what I needed. I’m on the search for a sponsor. If anyone has tips on finding the right one, please DM me.
I am mildly mourning the decision to be AF for life, but taking it day by day is really helping. I just need to stay sober today…. Then we can do it all over again tomorrow.
Sending sober vibes to all y’all in MFP land!!7 -

Good luck with finding the right sponsor, hope it works out well for you.
Your really inspiring me by watching your journey unfold. I have been looking into the AA since you posted about it. 12 step programmes, in general, seem to have high success rates 🤔
I did a year sober but never worked on why I drank… just sheer willpower! Im going to get it right this time!!!!!7 -
Two weeks sober!!! Doin a happy dance!7 -
I know I'm just 14 days in... but today I found the strength to sit down and work on restarting my career. I sent out 3 resumes to top shelf companies. I will do this again tomorrow. As a person with 20+ years in the industry, it is humbling to start up again. I am not sure I would have done this today if I had drank yesterday.
One Day At A Time!!!!11 -
I have been doing well enough but yesterday I found myself at a friend's pool party. And there was a bar and old habits crept back and I poured one after the other. Today I had to go to work feeling hungover and nauseous. I was worried my colleagues would think I had covid - that's how yucky I looked and felt.
Anyway, back on track today. I do remember my favorite AA speaker on youtube named Dr. Martin said when you quit drinking and then pick it back up. You ramp up just like you were when you quit. So through the summer I tip toed through it drinking here and there. Now that school has started, it is the last thing I want to do again is work feeling sick.
Last school year I didnt drink and had zero hangovers. I plan on that again!
@Beka3695 Congrats on your coin!! Well earned! You might enjoy Father Martin as well.
@BeIn2day Bravo to you! One week- seven days of clarity. I'm happy you feel well!7 -
@Beka3695 Sister Bea is also delightful. I like taking long walks and listen to her speech and a few others.https://youtu.be/1BOjQpJ1J602

Hi Friends, just working away in this heat! Living in the midwest, I have a classroom with no air conditioning plus the windows face a small courtyard only. So no air flow. Waaaaaa! I am complaining:)
Anyway, I decided to have a one woman party and made two strong margaritas yesterday evening. WhY? Because I deserved it. (saying this in jest). So today I worked exhausted because I didnt sleep.
I'm really in a funk. But I wont give up.
I like the Weller book topic "confessions of a people pleaser". That's me. I should read it.7 -
I saw Tim McGraw spoke recently of his wife Faith Hill who saved his life from alcoholism. He said he knew this was getting really bad in 2008 when he would wake up and take a shot of whiskey and wake the kids up. So, he went to his wife and told her the truth. She embraced him and helped him get better.
I have noticed that he is quite the fitness buff. I wish I could exchange my desire to drink to become fit!7 -
Just bought a new book, "Tired of thinking about drinking - Take my100-Day Sober Challenge" by Belle Robertson. I will start this Sunday!7

2 weeks AF.
One thing I am reminded of ~ how much happier I feel, when I don't drink alcohol. Alcohol definitely gives you a good rush and I can't deny that.....I guess its what makes it so tempting. But when I do drink, I ALWAYS feel flat and miserable afterwards. Nothing beats feeling good and happy, naturally.
You're right- alcohol is a depressant. The day after can be quite brutal - i feel jittery and nervous. It's so not worth it. Congrats on 2 weeks!5 -

Good luck! You have what it takes- determination! New programs and new books are so motivating. Does the program include journaling. I think that would be so meaningful.3 -
Yesterday was 21 days. It was/is feeling a little anticlimactic to me. Other things going on that is taking my mental strength.
A guy from AA checks on me daily. He is an interesting character. Think Tony Soprano as a used car salesman. He says it is a great day as long as you don’t effing drink. I wanted to drink last night. What kept me from it was that 1. I’d have to pick up another day 1 chip and 2. I’d have to tell “Tony.” I guess there is accountability in not wanting to disappoint those who believe in you.
I didn’t drink. Today feels like an hour/hour day. Im trying to get out of my head and keep this under control.7 -
@Bein2day I love that butterfly quote. It gives me hope.
I have not been doing well with the no alcohol. Not getting drunk or hungover but my goal really is to be completely AF. Tomorrow is a new month which feels like a fresh start. I will do better.4 -
@Beka3695 You are doing GREAT!!5
-
Tomorrow, if I do not drink until then, I will have 6 months sober from alcohol.....holy shite. This is the longest I have been sober (other than pregnancy) since high school. This thread was part of the beginning of my journey of quitting alcohol until AA opened back up (COVID). I'm grateful for all of you and amazed at how 'special' this thread can be for so many. Hope everyone has an awesome day. I'll check in tomorrow. (PS - my life is NOT a bed of roses right now, but what's changed is how I react, and even going thru hell I refuse to drink over it. It won't help10

I always over indulge in food when I drink too much. Cutting back or stopping alcohol altogether has to be part of my weigh loss, healthy lifestyle journey! There is just nothing at all healthy about drinking. Moderation only works for me for a very short period of time and then the over indulging starts back up.8

I was so hesitant to go to AA. I’m laying here in the dark thinking “I hope to God I can get to a meeting today!” It has been a total game changer.
Today is day 23. In the last 23 days I hit a post with my car (going to a meeting), my basement flooded twice, we had to have the transmission replaced on the other car, lastly a falling out with my best friend - like relationship ending.
It has been a lot in this short period.
I’m not drinking. I’m not drinking. I’m not drinking!
I talked to “Tony” for about an hour yesterday. Btw, he is about my dads age. So nothing flirty or 13th stepish about it. He really helped me get my mind back in the right spot.
ONE DAY AT A TIME! Just don’t effing drink!7 -
Hi guys!!!! Hope everyone is enjoying a sober Sunday!!!5

My 2 - 3 day hangovers are a big part of my reason for wanting to stop altogether.
Hell on earth some of those hangovers. I don't miss that...yucky. 🤢
I sure don't miss those hangovers. What an absolute waste of days. I remember two years ago, I would be lying in my bed in my apartment. And I'd envy everywhere else walking by on a beautiful sunny day. And I was too sick to get up. totally yucky!4 -
Jim Gaffigan does a whole bit on drinking. He says something like "no one ever says I'm so happy I did those shots.". I went to an ethnic festival and I saw people doing shots but sipping them. The shot was soooo strong and people knew it.
Did you hear Chrissy Tiegen is 50 days sober? She's been trying and trying for over a year- maybe two years. She would probably like our thread! https://www.cnn.com/2021/09/06/entertainment/chrissy-teigen-sobriety-trnd/index.html
I am convinced it takes a few years for sobriety to kick in and stick.5 -

I saw this sign yesterday. It said:
One Day
or
Day One
This just really resonated with me. How many times have I told myself "oh one day I will quit for good, (or start exercising, start dieting" etc etc) I am really really trying now to stay focused on my overall health. I'm not getting any younger and it is far past time to treat my body with the respect that it deserves. I think of my beloved late Father and I think to myself, "am I living the kind of life that would make him proud or disappointed? " That is major motivation for me.5 -
I am concerned about our friend Foo Foo. Has anyone heard from her? Did I miss something?
I'm doing well. I am occasionally drinking but not crazy. I take one Naltrexone before I know I'm going out and amazingly, I stop after two.
Wow- like a normal drinker.
p.s. Disclaimer_ I am no fool. I do know that while right now, it's all working for me, I better be careful!!!3 -
@BeIn2day We have a lot in common. Our bodies just cant handle much alcohol before a wicked reaction (hangover). My friends can't understand that- we can drink the same amount, but at the end of an evening I am the one with my head in the toilet.
My ex's new girlfriend can apparently hold her liquor. My ex told me how he and the girlfriend once drank a whole bottle of vodka in an evening. I wanted to say "Bravo, yahoo. good for you."
I wish i could drink that much without pain, but it's not for me.3
