October 2021 Monthly Running Challenge

Opened October with 6 miles. Another cooler morning and my pace for the last 3 miles definitely reflected that. Summer can stay away! But there will probably be at least one more streak of 100 degree days. Happens every year.

10-1 7k slow
October Total: 7k
October Goal: 150k
Sunny, mid 40s F, and no wind again today. Heard red tailed hawks and saw a wooly bear caterpillar
When you pop in here claiming your December 2021 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
PUT THE FUN BACK IN THE RUN!
Return to a good running weight of 175 lbs (second attempt)
2021 Races:
6/26 Direction Up 5k, Solon, OH 31:48 chip; 31:59 Garmin; 53d overall; 2d male 65 and over
7/17 Run of the Ox 5k, Mantua, OH 32:19 Garmin; 44th overall; 3d place male 60 and over
9/18 Hattie Larlham ThriveK, Aurora, OH Scratch
The two rusty segments and one black segment in the middle were all about the same width, so it should be an average winter -- if any of our seasons will ever be average anymore.6 -
Nice run @Teresa502 ! Yeah for friends that get up early too.
Nice running @Tramboman ! What color was the wooly caterpillar? - never mind. Just saw your answer. I haven't noticed any around here yet. I do know that there weren't very many foggy days in August, which all the old timers say indicate the number of snows we will have.
@penguinmama87 Sometimes family obligations take priority. I agree that fall weather is very fickle. Hope you get your run in tomorrow.
Great run and paces @johnisrunning !
@CarsonSurfs Glad you have lots of options for running.
Nice run @RunsOnEspresso ! Hope it doesn't get too hot again for you before next year.

October total: 10/80 miles
10/1: 10 miles
It rained my entire run, warm-up, and cool down. A pretty steady but not too heavy rain. Honestly the perfect rain for running. Except it lasted for almost 2 hours and I was completely soaked and dripping by the time I got home.
Something about running in the rain just makes me so happy. It's peaceful and quiet. I didn't see a single person out exercising. Just a few walking their kids to school with umbrellas.
Tried 2 new fuels today. Gu in vanilla flavor was first. Flavor was good. texture was a little thick, it coats the mouth. And there was a little more aftertaste than some of the others I have tried. Stomach was fine with it. Overall not bad at all and I would use it again but so far the honey stinger gel is still in the lead.
Second I used a few skratch chews. 10 miles is a weird distance for fuel testing because during a race I would have a gel around mile 5 and then another around 9-9.5. So taking a whole gel with a mile left in my run seemed pointless. Enter the chews. I can just take a few to stave off a crash and then get real food at home. I tried the sour cherry flavor. The flavor is mild but still cherry enough and doesn't take like medicine (so many cherry flavors do). The texture is good - closer to a gummy bear rather than the bloks consistency. I liked it. Stomach tolerated them fine. These may become my new backup fuel. One reason I used chews initially was being able to tailor the amount of fuel I was taking in during a run very easily. When using gels, that becomes a little bit trickier since it is a bolus of 100 cals at a time. Knowing I sometimes have issues maintaining my blood sugar, having a backup of something small that I can titrate as needed is a good idea.10 -
My first run is scheduled for tomorrow, today is a personal trainer day. #bootyday
I probably didn't need to post that but given it was my first day of a new challenge - it felt like I should post something. LOL. 😂

We had fog once in august... I hope that means one snow and not 2 weeks of sub zero and a foot of snow. I saw a woolly worm last week and it was black. I think that means cold, eh?
ETA the persimmons are about ripe. I should see what the seeds say.3 -

The entrails of an albino crow when examined through the eye of a newt are the most accurate way to predict the severity of winter, with the possible exception of the long range forecast from the National Weather Service.9 -
1 Oct - 0.00 miles ran 1.0 miles walked - driveway laps
Today is normally a tennis cross training day with a walk to keep my streak going. My tennis was canceled, so I worked at daycare from 9 - 5, ran some errands, and then did my mile walk on the driveway after I got home. I'm hoping to have a bit more time next week and hopefully get some running in.
@martaindale That sounds like an enjoyable run! I like reading about your fueling trials. I know I need to work on that, since that was my issue in my HM last month. You give me things that I can try, if I can find them.
@mshawski Lots of us post non running items. It's nice to know that you are active on non-running days.

Goals for October are to run three times a week, trails, speed and/or hills, plus a long run at least 10k.
Got out today for an easy 10k on the Greenline. Very annoyed because we were supposed to run yesterday and made other plans since the forecast showed thunderstorms all day, with the next day forecast beautiful and clear. And then there wasn’t even rain yesterday. And then today the rain and thunderstorms from yesterday showed up! When we headed out the weather map wasn’t showing any rain on the predictive radar, zero percent chance of rain, it’s saying “mostly cloudy” then shortly after we are drenched, I can hear thunder, and then to add injury to insult it started HAILING ON US! What the heck, WeatherMate, someone asleep over there?
I know people who like running in rain, but I hate being wet while running, so I was miffed. However there was nothing to be done about it so I tried to relax and be zen. And it ended up not being that bad (apart from the hail which was obnoxious). Since it was 80 something F, the rain was probably nicer than a sunny day would have been. Frogs singing, smell of wet earth. Only one other runner and a single cyclist who passed us about five times.

I rested the last couple days since I tried to run on Tuesday and couldn’t manage even a mile and it’s feeling better today. Before that I rested, did exercises and stretches for my legs and iced the hip per doctors orders for 2 weeks. He told me to start walking after that and to add running if I could tolerate it. I couldn’t tolerate it. After getting some good advice from my MFP friends. I’m going to slowly start with walking. I’m going to start tomorrow by just slowly walking a mile if I can do it without pain. If I can’t I’m going to contact my doctor. I have a 10K on 10/31 that I know now I can’t run it but I can walk it if I get better. But only if I get better. I’m not going to push it.
When I had an Achilles tear before a 10k, I asked if I could swap to the 5k since walking a 10k gets a little boring - if your race has a 5k option it might be something to consider. Sorry your hip is still bothering you, I hope it improves!2 -

My husband and I saw a wooly bear on the bottom of a leaf at Chucalissa and he was solid black! Hopefully not an omen!4 -
@rheddmobile Yikes about running during a hail storm. That's scary and hurts. I would have probably tried to seek shelter somewhere. Glad it turned out to be not horrible.1

Distance Log:
10/2 6.46
Total: 6.46/75 miles
Everyone stayed asleep when I got up this morning! Huzzah!
It was colder than expected (high 40s F) but after a mile or so I felt fine. I tried out my new shoes today and I could tell they made things easier. Lots of dogs today. I know most of the usual dog walkers I come across and their dogs are well trained and behave, but today there were a couple new people and their dogs were NOT. I was very glad they were leashed - not everybody leashes early in the morning (I guess they expect not to see anybody else?) These two walkers passed each other, and I was right behind one of them, and if their dogs hadn't been leashed there probably would have been a really nasty fight right there in the road. I slowed down a lot until the barking and straining to get at each other stopped, and then I hurried to pass the other and thankfully didn't see either of them again.
I said on another thread about running in the dark a while back that I really don't fear being attacked by a person. I don't worry about wild animals either, really, because encounters with them are rare (though predators do show up every once in a while, and a few years ago there were a few animals caught that tested positive for rabies). If there's anything that I worry about, it's a dog. I do apologize to any dog owners and lovers - I don't think I was really afraid of them at all until I started running and walking regularly.
Despite all this which makes it sound like today's run was awful, it actually was quite nice!

October Goal: 150k
Partly cloudy, low 50s F, and no breeze. Finally got the courage to step on the scale today, as I was concerned my weight was creeping up. Not creeping, but LEAPING!!!!!! No wonder my heart rates and BP are up and my legs are tired. One more challenge to surmount. Think I'll ask Santa to bring me some discipline for Christmas.

First run of October: 8 miles, average pace of 9:46 min per mile and 622 feet of elevation.
I'm running a 7 hour timed event on 7th November and hoping to be able to run around 35 miles if I can.
Not going to set any goals this month. I'm limited to 2-3 runs a week and just going to concentrate on maintaining a steady even pace and enjoy it rather than feel I need to reach a particular distance at month-end.
October cumulative:
8 miles and 622 feet of elevation7 -
@penguinmama87 Re: running in the dark - I feel the same as you. Not bothered by any animals other than dogs, only because I can never tell how they'll behave. As some go absolutely nuts when they see a runner, but are fine with walkers.
One thing which is a bit unnerving about running in the dark, is running trail up the mountain or in the forestry with a head torch! You'll be running along and then you see different sets of eyes glaring at you from the bushes/trees. It can be a bit spooky even though you know it's only Deer, Foxes, Rabbits etc.6 -
@penguinmama87 I feel the same way about dogs. We have always had dogs and I love dogs, but they are the thing that I worry most about when running.2

First October run on the books. I realized I did a bad job of estimating my walking miles as I didn’t factor in the fact that I have to walk a mile before each run to loosen my body up enough to run without injuring something. I guess we’ll see where I come out at the end of October and can adjust for November 😊.
October running miles: 3/40
October walking miles: 1/10
PERFECT running weather (sunny, 50’s)
