Follow up to my post where you may note my average heartrate was 181 for that 5 miles. My apple watch says I hit 203 during the 4th mile (which was my slowest). I think my apple watch is drunk. LOL.
Are you having problems with cadence lock? My husband was freaking out that his watch said 170s on basically an easy run which felt easy, and I’m almost certain it was cadence lock, since he has no heart rate data for the walk previous and then it jumps up to 160-170 and stays there the entire run. When your cadence is similar to a heart rate and your watch isn’t getting a good heart rate because your watch is loose or something it can mistakenly latch on to your heart rate.
Your cadence is actually slower than that, though, so hmm.0 -
Apple watch heart rate while running. Not accurate. Always extremely high. It's why I went to a chest strap. Work has been REALLY stressful lately with supply chain being awful and a new customer who pretends that is not happening. Thank goodness for running. Or I would be on BP meds for sure!
17 Nov total 110.47 out of 150 goal. 173.89 left for run the year so need to avg 3.95 the rest of the year to complete on time.

10k on Sunday at the park around the lake - soooo many people. And all of them with no trail etiquette whatsoever. “On your left,” elicits no movement, just people slowly trudging four and five abreast, like herbivores grazing. Sometimes they would stop, all across the path. And turn to look at you, like “What?” as you were forced off trail and ran around them through the rough. Ugh I shouldn’t be rude but I don’t understand how it’s possible to walk so slowly. I used to be obese with bad knees but I didn’t walk that slowly! And everyone was doing it, it’s like there was some sort of family challenge slow walk contest at the park.
The colors are finally starting here, but it’s still not really turning. I can’t remember fall coming this late before! Despite all the poky walkers everywhere we saw dozens of deer. And the walkers were oblivious to the deer as well! An entire family of deer crossed in front of one family - within twenty feet - and they just ambled on talking. I said, hey, do you see the deer? And the family jumps out of their skin at the deer, they really had no idea there were half a dozen large animals right in front of them!
Lifted heavy on Monday, including new leg extensions and hip thrusts. I have discovered I can use the hip thrust machine to do leg extensions as well!
So started Tues with tired legs, went to Chuckalissa which is not for people with tired legs. The theory was to run Chuckalissa “easy” which considering that the loop is exhausting just as a walk is a funny idea. But! We did it, we are getting more fit. We ran more than we walked, and never really got winded except after the three big hills. Ran most of the downhills. After being so worried about falling on the downhill I caught a root and almost fell on the flat. Did not fall, much cursing however. My husband also caught his foot and turned his ankle on the flat. With more fallen leaves, the tricky going is trickier than before.
We passed another couple at Chuckalissa, which is the first time that’s happened. I am local legend on Strava out there at the moment which considering we run it once every one or two weeks means not many people run there. So the first we know of the couple is this woman shouting at us, “Stay right there! Don’t come any closer!” We dutifully stop, wondering what sort of trail hazard is around the curve, and it’s her dog which is off leash. Husband trying to catch the dog, mostly grown golden retriever puppy which is delighted and having none of it. Lady keeps shouting and freaking out as if her dog is going to maul us if not caught, meanwhile the dog, which keeps looking at us and wagging, is getting freaked out by her reaction and starts jumping around and dashing at us then running back. Okay I get it, your dog is not socialized and isn’t supposed to be off leash here, but this is really really NOT the way to socialize the dog. Husband finally catches the dog and the woman tells him to take the dog off the trail so we can pass. We say thank you. Husband heads a few feet off trail, did I mention this was at Chuckalissa? Land of abrupt declivities and dangerous slopes, where if you trip and step a foot off path you will never be seen again? So this couple are maybe in their sixties, look fit for hiking but not young people, and this dog by this point is very jumpy and yanks the guy off his feet, and he starts tumbling straight down a gully overhanging a huge drop off. Stopped by a tree, about thirty feet down. We yell “Are you okay? Can you get back on the trail?” Lady yells, “Just keep going, get out of here!” and heads off trail towards them and starts sliding too. Guy says, “I think I’m okay…” There is no easy way back up from where he is. Everything soft and slick with leaves too. Wife still yelling at us to leave, now also sliding down. So, we left them, as requested, but we did mention they existed and where they were to the ranger station on our way out. I hope they are okay. And I sort of hope that guy gives his wife an earful after they are both safe.

BTW my Strava is still being super weird compared to my husband’s- calling miles extremely fast. And this time I think I know why. Top is my husband’s data with first mile highlighted in blue. Bottom is my data, same first “mile” (actually only .67 of a mile according to his data) highlighted in blue. You can see how mine is extremely jaggy. I don’t know why it suddenly started doing this or how to get it to stop, but it’s getting worse! By the end of 10k my data said 8 miles. So that’s a whole third of a mile off per mile.3
-
@SummerSkier - What chest strap do you use?0
-
I use the Polar as they have extra small. It syncs pretty well with the watch bluetooth most of the time.. but there are others which do and are a little cheaper. Only issue is the strap is too large for me.1

I have had this happen a few times with strava over the years, with and without a synced watch. It’s usually a GPS tracking issue but it can be on your watch or on strava’ s end. Assuming you are using a watch, make sure the software is updated. Make sure the maps on your phone are updated and that you calibrate them (just the calibration fixed mine once). Check the setting for how exact your GPS tracking is on your watch. Some have an option for more or less frequent as a battery preservation but that can really jack up the tracking. Then restart everything, watch and phone.
I have worked through this process a few times and can’t always figure out exactly what it is that fixes it, but usually one of these things, coupled with a good reboot does the trick.4 -
@mshaski My watch (garmin vivoactive 4s) gets cadence locked sometimes, especially at higher paces/heart races where those numbers tend to be closer together. If I tighten my watch a bit it helps, but I’m still not convinced it’s actually all that accurate. My heart rate reads high most of the time regardless of effort. I have attempted to use the HR to modify training but have just given up and opted for a perceived effort as I just am not quite to the point of getting a chest strap for that purpose.
@rheddmobile That is some horrible trail etiquette! I’ll admit I get pretty mouthy when people don’t respond to my warnings while running. I know you hear me, you just looked at me. Move over!
I hope those people made it out of there ok. That lady’s behavior seems really odd.1 -
@polskagirl01 - I remember you thought you were coming down with something. Did you test positive for covid? I know they are reporting pretty bad outbreaks of the flu here now too.
On a more humorous note, I'll just say that tinnitus is not good for a musician - I was laying there trying to determine what note I was hearing, then had to get up to check. Haha. It's not constant. Maybe it will go away.
@rheddmobile as frustrating as that must've been, your description of the slow families and crazy dog lady are so funny!
A friend of mine has been having Strava issues like yours for a while now. She's recording on her phone and suspects a GPS issue. Of course her husband's maps look great, even when they run together. She's tried all sorts of things; nothing has helped. It messed up all of her Strava PR's too and has shown her walking on water. Oops.5 -
@polskagirl01 hopefully your tinnitus goes away soon. It is not uncommon after an illness and can be from an inflammatory response or medication or congestion, or any number of things. So what note/pitch is it?
@shanaber I've run on the mall before and it's a really cool place to run. Hopefully, I'll be able to get there - I've packed my running clothes.

Treadmill warmup before strength training. I got there a little late and ran a little slower than usual I guess so didn't get the 3 miles I planned.3 -
Hello. I'm a little late to the start, but that's never stopped me before. I've just found this and would like to participate. I'm not a runner... or a walker... so I'm setting a realistic goal for myself for the rest of the month: Do something at least once a day. Right now, I simply need to start moving. Next month, though. I plan to actually have a bit more meat to my goals.

Thanks so much! The calibration seems to have fixed it! I didn’t know that was a thing.2 -
@katharmonic it's a "D", but then I was sitting in the kitchen and it sounded different and I figured out it was an "A"... but then I realized that was the fridge 🤣
I ran my "Morning Mile" school drop-off route this morning. Probably could've done more but have a lot to do around the house today and figured it was enough for now.4 -
@rheddmobile Glad that worked for you!
@polskagirl01 Happy to hear you are on the mend. I hope your tinnitus goes away soon. That’s probably annoying.

@rheddmobile - I has a similar issue yesterday with people on my trail. It looked like maybe a couple of young families or even a preschool/kindergarten class with 6-8 kids spread across the trail and even onto the sides and up to the fence towards the river. I was trying to figure how/where I could run through them and one little kid came running/dancing at me so that I had to stop or I could have fallen. They yelled at him but made no attempt to move themselves or the other kids out of the way. They are lucky no cyclist came zooming down, they would have taken out a few kids.
I have had some Strava/GPS issues occasionally. I run it on my watch and typically delete and reinstall when it gets buggy. That usually fixes it.
So weird about the couple with the dog! You would think they would want it to socialize and get used to other people. Also strange that she wouldn't want some assistance getting her husband out, or at least to go get help! I hope they got out ok.
@polskagirl01 - I hope you all recover completely! I have read about runners who were at the top of their game and afterwards could no longer run without getting out of breath or having heart issues.
I had tinnitus for about a year when I was a kid. I had rheumatic fever and they thought it was related to the inflammation or the medications I was on. I was so happy when it was gone! Maybe that is why I don't tolerate little buzzing noises well.
@Lorelei19 - Welcome! We are a crazy bunch who can be very chatty. Jump right in and join the conversation or ask questions.
Between moving back into our house and getting the other house 'sale' ready I lost several days and then the 90F+ heat came back. I should have gotten out anyway, I always have in the past but I just couldn't do it. There was so much to do at home and it was easier to just stay and work on unpacking boxes. As a result this is my lowest, non-injury month in a long time. Probably since I started running - looked back at my stats and the last month at under 60 miles was in March of 2013. I started running in 2012 and that looks to be my lowest month (non-injury) since then... until now ☹️
Looks like they have removed a search within a discussion capability. I typically had a word or two in my race descriptions that I could search on to find and copy my previous mileage. Guess I am going to need to keep a copy now.

18 Nov total 115.09 out of 150 goal. 169.27 left for run the year so need to avg 3.94 the rest of the year to complete on time. With only 43 days left in the year it feels very doable but it's been tough. And I am a little afraid that once complete I will feel a little lost like finishing a really good book and not having a sequel to it. And of course who is going to give me the ticker tape parade for the accomplishment? LOL.

@shanaber I did the same thing to find my last post and copy my mileage. When the thread really gets going it can be several pages back. I really liked that function.1
