People can say such hurtful things not thinking about what it does to someone mentally. One day my dad told me I wouldn't be able to fit in one of the kitchen chairs if I didn't start losing weight. I know he thought he was helping. But, that comment kind of damaged me. My mom barely had food in the house because she didn't want me to eat much.
You are right. I am sorry to hear such rude things. I don't think anyone that has said these things would want to hear those things themselves. I am sure you have always been beautiful!!3 -

If so, this was said to me by someone who has been very proud of me and a supporter. Please don't turn the "You are looking great" around to something else. She knows she needs to lose a few lbs but isn't in the right frame of mind/timing right now and is saying she wants my help when she is. It was said as a compliment to my willpower and dedication, turning down goodies at work and all.
No it wasn't sarcastic at all. It is once again refreshing to hear something nice.2 -

"Are you sick? Are you losing weight on purpose?"7 -
My partner asked if the running, walking and less snacking would result in the loss of "that delicious booty" and insisted I looked great with "curves in all the right places"... I don't care about the curves, but when the booty is struggling to fit into the favourite jeans and I'm struggling to do things I love, it is time to act. He will just have to deal with my booty however it looks.16

One I've heard from time to time is, "Are you okay? You aren't sick are you?" Some people think you can only lose weight consistently if a disease made the weight fall off.12

I have assured my partners that thanks to my genetic body type, there will always be plenty of junk in my trunk. I'd just prefer that trunk to be a size 8. (grin)8 -

FWIW, it's also not very pleasant when someone complements one's appearance, when that appearance has resulted from illness/treatment. 😬
Having experienced both, it was less distressing to be asked if I was sick, when I'd merely been losing weight on purpose. Others' mileage may vary. 🤷♀️20 -

It sure is! I've always loved my riding as a workout because it's *fun*
Last night I rode bareback for the second time this week and my legs were the good kind of wobbly and weak afterwards6 -
Sadly the world in general equates your level of intelligence and capability with a cultural norm of presentability.
If you violate that norm say with a striking weight loss it threatens those who rely on that norm system.
They then have to reevaluate your position in the hierarchy of that norm and the funny part is they may not even consciously realize they subscribe to that norm.
So you have displayed willpower and initiative!
Comments made about wondering if your sick or the if weight loss on purpose or telling you you need to stop are just indications that you are forcing those norm subscribers to reevaluate.
Striking weight loss can break or end relationships of all kinds but it can also generate many new ones.

I hate to agree with this, and hope that it’s not always true, but often it is. If you’re the “funny, fat “ friend, and suddenly lose weight, you’re now the good-looking funny friend. This upsets lots of established group dynamics15 -

My partner had a similar response, although he was just joking around. He just wants me to be happy. In reality, he actually likes my smaller butt more now, as it has a much nicer shape than it had with all the fat on it.6 -

A long time ago when I was younger, I went on a diet and lost weight. My aunt saw me for the 1st time since losing weight in the supermarket and asked me if I was sick!4 -

Agree NO MAGIC PILL but personally for me Keto is the easiest WOE I have ever done. I have known for near 40 years, that if I eat a starchy carb for breakfast, I would CRAVE a sandwich for lunch and I would NEED them the rest of the day.
But it does also takes willpower & determination to decline them. Especially at work.
I did low carb for about a year and lost 60 of the 70 pounds I wanted to lose. I am now focusing more on low calorie than low carb, but have found checking for carbs to be an automatic habit at this point, lol. As far as keto, to each their own. I can't because of the low fat factor I have to follow due to cholesterol issues.9 -
I hit the point during loss where anyone suggesting I try keto meant I had to turn and walk away from them -- because my knee jerk reaction was to furiously scream.
No offense for those it works for, and I will admit I've never done it--
but I've never done it because I WOULD NEVER BE ABLE TO SUSTAIN IT AND I DON"T WANT TO WORK THAT HARD AT EATING. For me, it would be hard. I'm reasonably about it now but I got so. tired. Of. Hearing. It.18 -

I don't do a TRUE Keto. I had trouble getting all the fat in. So I do a combo. 15 Net Carbs +/- 3, 1000-1200 calories, the Fat falls where it falls, also protein but I get protein every meal, on work days 3 meals/day(low carb, protein shake for breakfast, salad for lunch and meat & veggie for dinner & snack) off days 2 meals/day with somewhat intermittent fasting as I don't eat till after doing my Elliptical so about a 12-16 hour from previous meal/snack. Can't say for others but its working for me.2 -
don't pay too much attention to the people around you. It's about how you feel yourself. For me there is another bonus in fighting the 'diabetes mellitus', for which losing weight has proven to be the most benificial factor. Just believe in yourself !!!!7

What kills me is that everyone says "You dont need to lose weight" "You look good"
Sure I have built muscle up by working out, but meanwhile I am 40 lbs overweight.
These polite answers are just not helpful to me.
I wish someone would say "you could stand to lose some weight - HERES HOW I DID IT"

A few years ago I had lost a bunch of weight (intentionally) and when I had lost about 30 pounds, people started asking me if I had "gotten my hair cut or something". >:( Oh well lol. We'll see what happens this time7

I've been working at this weight loss thing(I will not call it a diet)for about 5 months and I've lost 14lbs and 10 inches. The other day my son in law said "Wow, you look great!". That's the first time anyone in my family noticed the change in me.15

One of the worst comments was "You look so intelligent now!"
I have also had some awkward "You were so big before" comments. I respond with the polite "Thank You"
Most people are polite though and would say you look good or something similar.
I have a history of weight cycling though I am currently losing weight. I have been many different sizes. Many of these were years ago.

I have a cousin who has always exercised and was mindful of what she eats. Most of our lives, she has been one of my thinnest relatives. When I weighed 140 lbs(2009-2012) I wore a smaller pants size than she did. She would constantly tell me that “ you will just gain it all back.” I slowly regained due to a combination of injury, full time college classes and a significant other who needed a great deal of support and attention. Everything came before taking care if myself. This time, I weigh less than before and that same cousin has talked about dieting apps and asked my opinion! Go figure?11

Iv lost a lot of weight, like 70kg in the last year and so I get a lot of "you look amazing" and "you keep getting smaller" which is awesome and I love it.
But I have put on a little bit of weight lately and it's not moving. It's my fault because my eating has got bad again. So I was 190kg last march, and around 117kg this march. But now I'm around 121kg and iv been sitting around there since June.
What's hard now is when people say "your looking great" "you keep losing weight" I feel like I need to correct them and say "iv actually put a little back on." And it's not like the weight is boring back on, iv been around 121kg since June and I was only at 117 for a very short amount of time. But it's still hard.9 -

I always tell people not to worry if others notice for a few reasons.
1) As a society, we have become very sensitive to people commenting on our appearance. I'm not saying this is wrong, but it is a fact. There are countless examples of people on here who get upset when people comment on how they look (in a positive way). So I have found alot of people, even when they do notice, either wont say anything or will comment in another way to get you to mention the weight loss. Like I literally had lost 120 pounds and had someone say that they "liked that color on me" referring to my shirt. When I mentioned that I was enjoying not wearing black since I'm not nearly as large as I used to be, they mentioned that they had wanted to bring up my success, but didn't know if that was okay. I think this is pretty common.
2) Weight loss is weird. You will have 80 pounds to lose, lose the first 60 and people will either not notice or say that they can "see it in your face." Then you lose those next 10 pounds and people act like you are an entirely different person. Unfortunately the changes aren't obvious across the pounds so its important not to stress.
3) People's minds are blurry. Without an exact reference its often hard for people to remember certain things unless there is a drastic change. I have a picture of me at my heaviest on my phone and when my weight loss comes up and I mention the amount I've lost, people are often shocked. They don't remember me being that big, and then I show them the picture. They aren't being nice, it's just true. Memories and mental images are fuzzy.20 -
Visit to my pysch who I see bianually and have for 8 years (he's a genuinely a sweet person) and I know he cares about my mental and physical health (though he has never mentioned my weight). "You've lost weight! Good work!" That all really he said ... but he just looked to genuinely delighted and pleased.
My family periodically tells me I'm looking good which is nice.
Only really irritating comment:
"At least you aren't gaining weight like me." when I am fighting tooth and nail to maintain my weight while on long term antibiotics from someone who gains about 10 lbs over the holidays and promptly loses it in Jan or Feb every year.6
