WARNING: Following this thread may be addictive; it gets very talkative...miss a day and you can be 50 posts behind. This is the most popular challenge on MFP. If you found us in the middle (or end) of the month, you're still very welcome to join in - no requirements or special invite needed. Once you post, that's it you're in. And yes, we do this every month.
You set your own pace and distance for the month. We will all be doing it together. This is your virtual running group to help keep you accountable, to enjoy a virtual post-run coffee with your fellow runners, and to make new friends and learn a few things.
This is a continuation from the December 2021 Monthly Running Challenge which can be found at: https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10849989/december-2021-monthly-running-challenge/p1
Anyone can join in, new and old, and if you found this thread late, you can join in at any time.
We have members ranging from total beginners all the way to Boston Qualifiers and beyond. We are a friendly and encouraging bunch. You never need to be ashamed of your miles. If you are making the effort, you will find only support here.
Here are the details from last month that apply again:
Anybody want to join in for a running challenge? Set a goal here and update us every day. OPTIONAL: You can post your progress by creating a ticker at http://www.tickerfactory.com (if creating one seems difficult, or you're like me and can't be bothered, then just type in your daily miles in this thread).
You can run, walk, or do treadmill - just be consistent. Don't let the high (or low) goals of others intimidate you. Some do 25 miles, others do 50, some go higher than that, some do lower; it's entirely your goal and therefore completely up to you. We help motivate each other, so what do you say? If you're new to running, set a low goal. If you're from a part of the world where miles aren't your thing, log your distances in KMs. And if you'd rather log your progress by time rather than distance, then you're entirely free to do that as well.
Feel free to set your goal now but wait until January 1, 2022 to start logging your runs!
Also, don't forget to join our group which can be found at:

Note: we also have a group on Strava and Facebook.
After you run, come into this thread and post what you did (don't forget to hit the star in the upper right corner to bookmark this thread). Simply keep a running tally of what you've done this month, and interact with the others. Many folks come in here and chit-chat it up, even on their rest days or while recouping from injury. This is a very social group and we talk about many things (sometimes even about running). It's a very friendly bunch here so don't be afraid to say hi (even if this is your first time), talk about a recent or up-coming race, ask questions, provide answers, or just lurk-n-learn. Participation is what makes this group successful.
Not quite sure how to log your runs? Follow the examples of many other challenge members. Even take a peek at last month's thread (posted above).
*******OPTIONAL TICKER*************
Info on tickers since I know there will be questions. Sign up for an account at http://www.tickerfactory.com and create your ticker. Then you need to update it after you finish a run and post it here. Here is what you will need to do.
After setting up your ticker, you will need to make note of the weblink they give you so you can return. An example would be:
http://www.tickerfactory.com/exercise/w6K1EiX/ <<<< the last part will be a part of the image link (explained below) that will be supplied to you after you initially create your link.
When you return to TickerFactory with the weblink, go to your settings page. Make sure you type your PIN in that you set when you created your ticker account. Then, where it says "Your current cumulative value", there is an add button. Simply add the distance that you just did, and the cumulative value automatically changes. Then hit next.
After adding your new miles (or KMs) to your ticker, you need to post it here.
After you hit next, it will give you a bunch of codes suggesting how to display your ticker.
Use the one at the bottom where it says Direct Image URL:
It will look something like:
http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/w6K1EiX/exercise.png
To display that correctly in your post, make sure you place the image (img) tags around that link. So it will look something like the following (but removing the spaces in the img tags):
[ img ] http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/w6K1EiX/exercise.png [ /img ]
^^^^^^^ Don't forget to remove the spaces between the brackets ^^^^^^^^^^
Some key things to pay attention to when posting your ticker:
Use the link that ends in .png
Remember the [ img] and [ /img] tags go in between the link
Remove the spaces in the img tags before posting
YES, there is a / in the second /img tag
By the way, everyone here should consider themselves a runner no matter how fast or slow. There's no judgment, we all started somewhere. And no comparisons, except with your former self. Don't compare your Chapter 1 to somebody else’s Chapter 20.

WhooHoo for 2022!!!
I'm in for 80 again with a stretch goal of 100!
Let's Keep It Sleasy and Do This!!3 -
Thanks @shanaber so if I'm going to do the RTY challenge I'll need like 160 in January. I'll give it a try and see how I do.
5 -
I’m in for 75 for January.
Does anyone have a goal for the year identified yet? I think I am going to try a run steak if at least 1 mile per day. I figure even on a rest day, I can do a light jog for a mile.9 -
Whoooo! I’m in for zero! ☺️ Just saying hi! I did chase Sandy and Kevin around the house, inside… from kitchen to couch. Like 5 feet. Perhaps spring we’ll do some walking.
5 months and 3 days both 56 pounds12 -
Hi @swensoon19d!! Love the dirt on their noses 😊 They are going to be BIG babies!2
-
Hi everyone, happy holidays! I've totally lost track of threads, will try to get back on course.
Still trying to work out goals atm, I'm signed up for RTY again if anyone wants to team up? @shanaber ?
I do want to continue with my monthly HM distance streak, 15 months so far.
I have a scary tough mountain race on the 16th of this month, so mileage will probably end up lower than usual.
Sure I'll find some crazy goals to commit to before long 🙂9 -
I'm in for 80 miles. I have a HM mid month and I haven't totally figured out my plan for the back half of the month, but I know it won't be much as I am taking most of the week following completely off and then it will be pretty sleasy the last week.
Year goals. It's hard for me to set a yearly mileage goal because I never really know what my plans are going to call for and I follow some sort of a plan almost year round. But, this year I do have a training goal. Guess it's time to tell everyone here I am planning on registering for Dopey 2023. I have been mulling this for a bit but have hesitated to tell people. I don't know why, maybe because it makes it more real! I am putting in my PTO request in just a few days as I typically request time off a year in advance for stuff I really want. That alone is making it feel very real. I recently transitioned to 5 days a week of running and have picked a marathon plan to use for Dopey training later in the year. I am working out exactly what to do in between but I know there will be some base building in there so overall, this will definitely be my highest mileage year. I feel like this is likely a one and done challenge for me, so I am committing to really training well this year to make it as good of an experience as possible.
@swenson19d Cute puppies! We always had labs growing up so they hold a special place in my heart!9 -
Hi @swensoon19d!! Love the dirt on their noses 😊 They are going to be BIG babies!
man we took them to a new vet yesterday to chat about spay/neuter schedule and get rabies vaccinations. I was so disappointed in them. The young techs knew everything there was to know about my dogs, said they'd barely reach 90 pounds because the CBR's that come in are 90 tops... uhhh, they are 1/2 mastiff... she just dismissed it. DH said "have you seen a boerboel mastiff? they can be 200 pounds. uh nah... mine are small. So we continue with the vet hunt. Kevin is officially a cryptorchid, which I think is the straw that gets him neutered 6-8 months d/t the increase chance of prostate cancer. A third vet is suggesting 6-8 months as well. Said there is no data that shows delayed neutering improves joint health. IDK. I'm advocating no later than 8 months just because the potential puppy and behavioural issues; I dont want Kev peeing inside or straying, or a slew of males sniff'n Sandy Cheeks' cheeks. haha! dd named her sandy cheeks. best spay neuter info I can find. suggestions welcome
@shanaber I just cleaned up Kevin mud tracks all over the house after bob cleaned and I swiffered. That's on me though, I filled a dig hole and used the hose to uncover the grass in the area. He was right back in it. he's too cute and lovey to be mad at.
We can say Kevin is named in honor of @MobyCarp, I just thought it was an awesome dog name at the time.
@martaindale they are chessapeake bay retriever and boerboel mastiff. Sandy is rather stoic, but yes they have that same energy level and lovable temperament and destructive tendencies if not worked with as the lab. Kevin never has met a stranger. They are velcro dogs with Raman noodle fur, haha!

Monthly Question?
Share your pet pics or your spirit animal, or socks... I love socks. Hate wearing them but like cool ones when I gotta.3 -
@eleanorhawkins - we have a RTY team that @kgirlhart set up and I think there are still spots left. Look for a team called Keeping It Sleasy 😊
@swenson19d - that study is fascinating. I never thought there would be that much difference across breeds other than the obvious because of size. I know a lot of breeders do matching based on genetic history though to try to keep certain cancers or other hip/joint issues out of their line. Maybe some of the breed differences are related to that and how much, or not, the breeders have done.
I am not a sock person and prefer to be barefoot unless it is cold and then when I do wear socks they are the soft, fluffy ones.
My spirit animal and pet are one and the same... you all have mostly seen so many pictures of him but here is one more from one of our runs before Christmas.
9 -
@eleanorhawkins There is one more spot on team "Keeping it Sleasy".
I have to think about my 2022 goals a little, but here are my pets:
And my granddog:6 -
I'm in for January & can commit to 75 running miles. Add in 25 miles bike and 8 hours strength training & stretching (figured half-hour 4x/wk). This should give me some left-over energy for other fun stuff like hiking.
The goal is to not get injured and get the extra 20 lbs. dead weight off before I increase miles by following a clean diet and getting my nutrients in. I don't think I eat at the right times for re-fueling and I have to work on that.
I'm a mom in my mid-50s and have done about ten races but my favorite is still the half-marathon and I'm signed up for the Banff half. I would love to do a 15 mile trail run but have yet to find the right trail shoes that don't shatter my feet.9 -
Hi Everyone
Fairly new to the group. Attempted a start a few months ago but ….(insert all flimsy excuses here).
Have done every race from 5km up to marathons. Would like to do some more half marathons this year. Really thinking of committing to a Spartan race at the end of August 🥴.
I have a decent base right now so I am looking to increase that and I have 20 pounds to get rid of.
Going for 100km this month for running.
Never posted a pic so not sure if this will work but here are my dogs
11 -
Bookmarking the thread. I think my friend and I are going for 1700 miles for the year as a base mileage goal. I would like to streak also but if we have another storm like URI in Feb that would be impossible. For January I am going to shoot for 120 miles. Which is pretty low for me but my secondary goal for the year continues to be faster.
2021 I completed Run the Year and actually have 2074 total I was at 51.3% miles under 10 and 6.3% miles under 9 min pace. I did want to run a half marathon when I started but I decided that was not in my best interest about halfway thru the year due to old injuries. Overall compared to 2020 I ran a lot more miles and a lot of them faster. So I consider it a success. I most of all wanted to avoid injury like 2020 and I was pretty successful at that except for minor issues from falling on the ice in Feb.
For 2022 I would like to be at 70% miles under 10 and 10% miles under 9. My fastest mile this year was 8:22 min pace back in March. I would love to hit at least one mile under 8 but I will be happy if I can get 1 under 8:15... Difficulty appears to NOT be linear and I am going to be another year older.8 -
@kgirlhart got it, thank you2
-
I'm in for 140k this month. I'm going to make myself take rest days and try to use my brain as much as my legs.
@swenson19d I'm pretty sure my spirit animal is a snail. No pics, though...5 -
My spirit animal ❤️❤️

@SummerSkier I love your spirit(ed) animal!
@Tramboman I disagree. Your spirit animal is more akin to a ... 🤔 an... 🤔 a Maned Wolf.

400 miles for January 2022
Looks like Crazy Laps are in my future, with storms and extreme low temps (for me).
HAPPY NEW YEAR! Prayers for safety, peace and balance
My Spirit Animal: I do not have the pictures on this computer. Someday I will have my graphics loaded in.6 -
I haven't decided on a goal for January or 2022 yet. Still trying to decide what my back is going to allow me to do. I'll try to work on my goals tomorrow.
Here's one of my favorite pictures of Tippy. It was taken back in Feb of 2015. Snow is still her favorite.7 -
Hi everyone 👋. Happy new year from London. Hope everyone is well. I’ve been gone a long time; 2021 kicked me in multiple ways and I ended the year barely recognising myself. I kept running as much as I could but not enough, which was frustrating.
But after 5 years on MyFitnessPal and a few setbacks in that time, I kind of hope I can find myself again. So if you’ll have me back again I would love to join you.
I’ve told myself even a mile a day will be better than nothing. So my target is 30 miles for January. Keep well everyone, and best wishes for a great 2022.12 -
Happy New Year! Welcome new people and those of you who are coming back to the group!
I had big plans to go for a long run, something like 22k for 2022... but woke up with a worsened cold and ended up doing 2.2km instead.
Goal for the month is to get my mileage back up to about 100 miles/month. I don't do New Year's resolutions. My closest race is in February, 13k (1 loop, up a mountain and back).9 -
Started the month (and year) with a run/walk with the 10 year old. We did about 3.5km. Have to start somewhere! X10
-
Of course you are welcome back @Faebert ! Great start to the new year!
@polskagirl01 Hope you feel better soon!2 -
@Faebert nice to see I'm not the only one coming back out of 'hiding' :-)
Happy new year everyone! Here's to a year with more of the good stuff and less of the crap.
I took myself off for a run up through the fog to the village on the mountain this morning. Given there were waaaay too many crisps (my nemesis) and nowhere near enough sleep last night I'm happy that I got up there, even though I had to stop and catch my breath more often than I would have liked. Came back down the main road instead of the usual backroad I use, which was interesting to say the least. Won't be doing that again on a normal day!

Your argument is weak. Snails have no grey hair.☺️ ❤️5 -
"Keepin' it sleasy since 1952"
1-1 7k sleasy
January Total: 7k
January Goal: 140k
Cloudy, foggy, and near 50 degrees F this morning, so I got to run in shorts and a short sleeved tech shirt. Theme song in my head today was "The Stroll," so my sleasy time was actually better than my perceived effort.
Congratulations, Run the World team!!! I knew you could do it!!
