The good news is, I do feel like something is helping. It's a slight improvement, but it gives me enough hope to make a plan on how to maybe eventually try to get back to running.6 -
Morning all. Very very wet here today, still warm though (I'm in NZ for people not in the know lol).
I worked shift last night (3pm - 11pm) and have work at 10am this morning, so was up at 8 to go out. I did contemplate staying in bed, my catch phrase is "I never regret a run" so out I went. Watch suggested 31 min at 7:45 min/km. I did that, but extended out to 5k, so did 36 min. Very hard slog at the end as my shoes were completely soaked through.
Which leads nicely to Questions: Favourite brands of running shoes and models, and why? Pros/Cons you have found?
I wear Asics Gel Kayano. I unfortunately over probate very badly, and without a good stability shoe get the worst tendonitis. I have learned the hard way not to bother trying anything else. So I'm always looking for sales because they are an expensive shoe5 -

@Teresa502 Ouch, that fall sounds bad. Hope your friend isn't in too bad of shape.
@eleanorhawkins makes a good point about the HR zones. I also had to adjust mine. Once I did the zones aligned more with my perception of effort.

@polskagirl01 I'm glad to see that you are feeling better and figuring out what you can tolerate slowly. Being conservative is probably a good idea at this point. I'm pulling for you.
Great running @Avidkeo ! You DO look a bit wet there. But you look great and I'm loving to see that smile.
I went into work at 10 this morning. I helped take the 2-3 year olds out to their playground twice (this morning and this afternoon). They all wanted to "catch" me or have me "catch" them. It was like a train of little kids running. Too cute and I got some decent short spurts of exercise in. After I got home, I was tired and sleepy, so decided to do a treadmill walk. I walked 35:32 minutes at 3.8 mph pace. My avg HR was 106 and max was 120.

I got in 6 miles on the treadmill. That is the only way I can be sure to run slow 😄

It was cold this morning at 31°F. I ran 5.6 miles. Cold is not my favorite, but it was really pretty. The moon is getting bigger and I saw some deer by the park.
@martaindale Congrats on the first race! Love the medal! Good luck in the morning on the 10K!
@fit2btied2016 I run in the Saucony Ride. That is the shoe they put me in when I had my gait analyzed. I have been thinking of trying something new, but I am happy with Rides, so I will probably just stick with them.
@Teresa502 Your poor friend! A broken nose bleeds so much. I bet that was kind of scary.

@martaindale - brilliant 5K!! and you are probably just about getting up to head out for the 10K as I write this. Good Luck!
@Teresa502 - ouch! I hope your friend is doing ok now. I also have a friend who recently took a faceplant while running. She didn't break her nose but was pretty banged up and bruised and she knocked out a few teeth. Be careful everyone!
Shoes - I am the odd one who loves zero drop minimal shoes. My all time favorite was the Skora Tempo until the company stopped making shoes. Recently the company is starting to come back but aren't yet making the Tempo shoe. Now I mostly wear Topo Athletic ST-3s. They have a new ST-4 model that I don't care for - it feels very clunky for whatever reason. I won the ST-4 and wanted to love them but not so much... I still have 2 pairs of ST-3s in rotation with tons of miles on them but because they are more minimal and lower cushion I can run many more miles on them. I have also recently tried Xero shoes and really like the HFS and Prio models. They are super light and I feel like I can really go fast in them but I am not sure if I would like them for longer runs. I would ddefinitely buy more Topo ST-3s if I could find them in my size.
No run for me today - we had the 'bomb cyclone' hit today with torrential rain and high winds. I should have done some strength training but I am still a bit sore from Tuesday's session so took today as a rest day.6 -

@quilteryoyo You should record chasing those kids as a workout! I bet the distance really adds up.
I went for a walk today, around the block and down a side road. I wanted 15 minutes, because my watch had stopped giving me the VO2Max and fitness age scores. Unfortunately it says I've lost 10 VO2Max points from 14 months ago, and moved me from a fitness age of forever-20 to now 50, when I'm actually in my early 40's 🤣
Also the "body battery" went from a record-high 87% when I woke up, to 39% after just that 18-minute walk. Uggggh. I ate a good brunch and am going to lay down.
It was nice being outside. Said hi to a neighborhood cat, and saw a herd of deer.

Great run on the treadmill @Scott6255 . That's the only way I can pace myself too....but I don't have an issue with going slow. I'm real good at that.

Congrats on your increased pace @Fit2btied2016 ! That was a long complicated day.

10k done! It was a lot cooler this morning and since it was dark for the whole race, it was basically perfect to me! In the corrals you could tell who had been paying attention to the weather and who didn't. There were more than a few people standing around in shorts and tank tops shivering. It's supposed to be even a little bit cooler tomorrow morning. I bet people will be more prepared.
I worked in some walk breaks starting just before the halfway point and made it a point to walk the aid stations. I feel like I did a good job keeping effort low and my legs felt fresher today after running a few miles yesterday.

@martaindale - you are really doing great with pacing yourself and getting the races done! Love the picture of Epcot all lit up! The medals are in true Disney style - so cool!
I can't imagine not looking/following the weather before a race. Maybe they are like @kgirlhart and are cold before they start but just run warm? I would have a throw-away shirt or sweatshirt on at least.

Yes great job @martaindale on your 2 races so far! Awesome pictures! I was wondering the same thing as @shanaber about access to the parks. But I doubt I would spend much time walking around all those parks with 4 days of racing to be done2

I did a treadmill session this morning before taking my Holter Monitor off and mailing it to IL to be read. I did a run/walk of 4/1 min at 4.2-4.6 mph/3.8 mph, then 3.8/4.2 mph for 1/5:48 minutes. Went 2.25 miles in 31:48 minutes for an average pace of 14:08 min/mile. Seems like it should be faster than that, but you can't argue with the math. My avg HR was 124 and max was 143 bpm. I also walked a total of 1.0 mile for warm up and cool down, so 3.25 miles total for the day. I'm glad I was able to get it done before going into work. It's so much better to not have to do it after I get home....but not better enough to get me out of bed at 4 am.

I got out today for what I thought would be a short run after I got to the trail. When I got over there though the mountains were looking beautiful so I figured Hobbes and I would run out to see the river and take a picture of the mountains. Then I decided to go down further to get a better picture. Then I decided we would go down and around this alternative route but had to check out the river further and then the mountains that are further off in the distance. I ended up with 2.72mi walking warmup/cooldown and 4.6mi running. So far I have almost 24 miles for the month (23.89) - wow! more than I would have expected!

Huge trash pile by the pump station that pulls the water from the river into the aquifer settlement ponds. It is at least 8ft tall and 15-20ft long with amazing things (chair! buckets, coolers, etc.) in it.

@shanaber This was a huge mushroom growing in the neighbor's yard. Anyone know what it is? Is it edible? Paging @7lenny7. He foraged mushrooms while trail running from time to time. He'd probably know what it is.
Do you have access to the park(s) all 4 days?
The races don't get you a ticket or anything. You just get to run through the parks. I haven't gone since races started. Even an easy day in the parks add several miles of walking and that didn't seem like a good idea. But, I know people who go to parks after every race. IDK how they do it.

Woo hoo, 3 runs done! It was a cold one this morning! Because we start so early, the temps haven't actually hit the lows for a couple hours. Today, it was cold but ok until about mile 8, at which point you could feel the drop. Everyone's breath started steaming and my lower arms and hands went numb. I made it a point to get a little water at every aid station even though I didn't really feel thirsty because of the cold. I may have slightly over hydrated as I had to stop by bathrooms twice along the way. But, at least I'm not in a deficit heading into tomorrow.
Pics today are: the castle in the dark - this race and the full run down main street in magic kingdom then circle around and run back through the castle. A lot of people line main street to cheer. It's so cool! The starting line And today's medal. Donald and Daisy slide across the front.9 -
Thanks @quilteryoyo! I had to keep reminding myself to slow down and save something for tomorrow. When it's cold I find it harder to take it easy.4

Another fantastic race @martaindale ! I wouldn't want to go to the parks either unless I was just running the 5K or 10K. Then maybe, but I would definitely have to save my energy for the races. I bet the park is exhausting on its own.

Wow @martaindale ! You really were speedy with that time and stopping twice to pee! Know that I woke up at 5:30 and at 7 this morning and were cheering you on. Love the pictures and that you get to run through the castle. I hope it's not quite as cold for you in the morning.2
