Welcome newbies and returnees! (((hugs))) to those who need them.
Happy Birthday Barbara!
We're not that close, Vicki! Mine is Feb 25th and Freddy's is March 15th and he is 4 years older than I.
Pip, you are SO wonderful to go to all that to help out our friend Katla. We all love her so much and we know how much she cherishes her screenname. Thank you.
Oh Kim! I'm so sorry. Prayers for your mom!
I did that once Machka... the only thing I never had was an AOL account, you and me Okie! HAHAHA!
2. Notice three things you find beautiful in the outside world... my backyard, the snow melting (even a little), blue skies
Love and Blessings, Carla, in MN5 -
Karen rodents! That's too bad. At least you aren't living with them. Hope they haven't done damage.
Annie in Delaware0 -
Morning, afternoon and evening all and sundry... and happy March birthdays!
Pip, you're a saint - at least you're connected by phone! Katla - Thinking about you, dear heart. Stick with Pip, she'll get you back to us.
Tere - All the sympathy in the world for you... I am not a caretaker, I never have been. My mother's words always come to mind: "Go outside and do some jumping jacks, you'll feel better." She wasn't much of a caretaker either. Amazing woman, but very little sympathy for sickies or hurties. Hang in there!
Kim - I'm so sorry about your mom's fall! Hope it's a quick healing... Many hugs while you walk through this one, kiddo. Just keep remembering you're strong enough, because you are.
Ginny - I always hated those counseling sessions. It was so much easier to talk to those who had the ability/skills and weren't using them than to talk to those who genuinely couldn't do the work. Scolding was always easier than saying "Perhaps you're not a good fit for this kind of work." I wasn't always tactful enough... and got in big trouble when a subordinate was telling me how unhappy she was because she didn't get promoted after she got her associates degree. She was angry all the time, lashing out at everyone around her. She asked me what I thought she should do. I said, "You should quit." She reported me for that... it was truth, but it wasn't what she wanted to hear.
Karen - such a wonderful way to spend an evening! I may have to steal "make nuggets." So much more pleasant than the reality... I hope it isn't raccoons, too. We had to have our entire ductwork redone in metal in a house in Oregon as the original was the mylar ducting that looks like a spring wrapped in foil, and raccoons had made nests throughout. They're so destructive.
Later, y'all,
Love,
Lisa in AR

Kim ~ So sorry about your mom's fall. Know that the hours drive is no fun for you but glad you are always there for her.
Tracey ~ Hope you will be accepted in the new job is it is a good fit for you.
Katla ~ You are blessed that you have such a good friend like PIP to help you. Please do as she directs and go up to the desk for more help.
Rosemarie ~ Thinking about you as you go through this difficult time.
Happy Birthday to All the March Ladies who celebrate!

Yo peeps-
Katla wouldn’t have been able to follow the written directions we gave her, even with the screen shots. She doesn’t know how to put someone on speaker while she’s on the phone. She didn’t know she could get on mfp while talking to someone on the phone. It was a challenge. When I call her, I’m going to have her call me back when she is at the front desk and while she’s on the phone, have her give the phone to somebody and I can talk to them. Hopefully she will be back in the chat room under her preferred user name.12 -
I have done all those things! And still use my aol account also owned 8 tracks and watched beta tapes.2

I still use paper checks for some bills. I'm very private about my credit cards.
Annie in Delaware0 -
Too Many NO's.....Never sent or received a fax/no AOL/no MySpace/never owned an encyclopedia/no Walkman or Boombox.
I can really sympathize with Katla. I spent over an hour trying to figure out how to download grocery coupons to my phone. Then DH had a fit because he couldn't activate his debit card due to not using it in 6 mos. I finally called the bank and got that done for him. This after listening to him rant, rave and throw things when he tried to get it done. He has no patience at all. Rant Over!

I just sent a check the other day!
2 points for me as I have never had a Myself account, or an AOL email. I tell husband I wish a typewriter as some months all my own pals write at once so I can have 10+ letters on my desk to answer. But then I think it would probably aggravate my palm tendon issue. I fear my piano playing days are numbered. 😥
So sorry Kim my thoughts are with you regarding your Mommas fall and surgery. Calm thoughts to you and healing thoughts to your Momma.🙏💖
Katla no worries come hell or high water we'll get your proper name to show. You know our Pip she is like a dog with a bone, she won't give up💖👍🏻. I would imagine she needs the front desk lady's phone number as well, so she can "give her the BOOT if she needs too.🤗💖
Hugs to everyone that wishes one.

Rebecca - it's good to see you post, darlin'. Been thinking about you a lot. Pics of Athena always welcome!
Zero points for me from Machka's list. I did or had every single one of those things. It brought back fleeting memories... like using a pencil to rewind a much-loved cassette so that the tape didn't fold or bend. Such fragile things. Also, the sound of AOL connecting over the phone line, which was while I was in college (I went back to school at 35). That was the connection to the Internet Super Highway!
Walked a lot yesterday afternoon, as I was dealing with enough gas to inflate the Goodyear blimp. I really hate it when that trigger gets flipped. Not terribly painful, just miserable. It's a good thing farts aren't visible, I would have looked like I was smoking out my badonkadonk.
It's time, and long past time, really, that I start tracking my intake and my symptoms in response so I can avoid these triggers.
Okay - so I saved my draft at that point, looked at a number of possibilities, and downloaded an app called MySymptoms on my phone. It will show correlations between the food I eat and later symptoms, supposedly. Well worth it if it does. It will also track my medications, my supplements, and my exercise and draw those correlations for me also. MFP is wonderful when I'm tracking CICO, but correlating food intake with symptoms is what needs doing right now. Should be interesting.
I've resisted tracking anything of late (back to trying to rid myself of obsession with numbers), but I need to figure this out. I think I've also been reluctant at least partially because it makes me more self-centered and feeling like a hypochondriac. It will be a steep data entry curve at the beginning, plus a little bit of a learning curve, but needs must.
Other than that, not much... Rain's coming this afternoon, so I'll get a couple things done outside this morning and then curl up with a book this afternoon.
Love y'all,

Tere and Kim - (((HUGS))))
Flea - you have been on my mind a lot lately, probably since you aren't making regular visits to Oly any more and waving as you pass my exit on I-5 Hope all is well in your world.
Tracey - crossing fingers on the new job - if it turns out to be what you want. Do you know much about the place? If you get an interview they will likely give you a tour.
Rosemarie - more big (((hugs))) coming your way.
Ginny - OK, remind me. Have you officially put in for your retirement?
Lisa - I channeled you yesterday when I replaced some cupboard doors in the kitchen. Roger and his wife got brand new everything in their kitchen last summer and saved some of the old doors for me - all the houses in the subdivision had the same cabinets. Once I got a big enough screwdriver, it was a breeze. Unfortunately only 2 of the new doors fit, but I'll take it. How's the tub/shower project coming along?
I too don't like workmen in the house. Part of it is the dirt and racket which makes Rosie nuts, and the other part is security. I don't have anything sitting around in view that's valuable but I've become a little paranoid. I can see some workman innocently mentioning his friends "Oh, I replaced the _____ at a house and the widow lady had a _____ ."
Anyhow, I'm not sure I'm up to tackling faucet replacement at the bathroom sink. I'll probably go ahead and buy a new one, make sure Roger is available for backup, and give it a whirl. Very grateful for all the wrenches, pliers and tools in DH's shop. I discovered his adjustable pipe wrench is great for grabbing the lids off cans. My hands don't have much squeeze strength, these are just the ticket!
From Food to Freedom - I watched a plant based diet film this morning. Participants with diabetes went through a program eating only plant based foods for ten days and many had remarkable benefits. The film did a 6 month follow-up - some stayed on the program and lost weight, dropped a lot of meds. Others weren't able to stay on the program.
Gosh, the foods they prepared looked great. I eat a lot less meat than I used to but depend on plenty of dairy for protein. As Rosemarie mentioned a while back, cooking for one is challenging. It was neat seeing folks gathered around these dishes and sampling all kinds of great looking cuisine.
I might try one plant-only day w/o dairy and meat and see if I sleep better and wake up less stiff in the morning.
Anyhow - if anyone is interested, here's the link to sign up and get free viewing of the film for the next 7 days.:

Lisa good luck with MySymptoms. Food allergies and IBS type things run in my family, but it's so mysterious. I remember when I first heard that the order of the food matters. Like if I start with a nice bland potato, then I can be a little more risky with the next item I eat. Or why was I reacting to trace amounts of dairy before, but now that my system is quieter, I can eat lactose free yogurt? So many variables and as soon as you figure out a rule, it gets invalidated. Then frustration, like why do they put milk lactose in so many medicines? All I know is that my system is much calmer the last ten years or so, with no real reason (maybe the divorce?)
MySymptoms sounds like a great idea. Hope you find your triggers and are able to calm your system. Like you said, the data entry is worthwhile to see the results.

Bea's roller skates arrived yesterday, and today DH spent all afternoon making her a hand made card, and writing her a silly poem to put inside. Her birthday, 14th, is the same as my dad. She is taking the day off school, (!!!!) and having a 'Zoo Experience', where you get to go around for the day with the zoo keepers and feed the animals etc.
We are meeting the family at Fatto a Mano for birthday dinner afterwards.
We missed her so much this Tuesday.
My new long black cardigan arrived today. It's exactly the same as my old one which I wear all the time, except it's new, and warm, and not falling to bits. No holes under the arms.
DH did the fruit and vegetable shopping this morning and stopped off at the wine merchant on the way. A case of wine arrived just after lunch! Today is AF beer day, so no sampling!
Midsomer Murders tonight. An old John Nettles one that I recorded this afternoon. Hate adverts. I'm still happily gorging on Agatha Christie novels. My life is complete.

Lisa- you mentioning the sound of dial up brought back a great memory. My son was maybe 2 or 3 at the time and I remember being in the kitchen and all of the sudden I heard that sound. My computer had been turned off but he knew how to turn it on AND had memorized the keystrokes(didn't know how to read ) for my password and was going online
He has always been great with computers.
Hard to believe he will be 25 at the end of the month. My little "Jona bug"
His name is Jonathan but we have always called him Jona-never Johnny or John and pronounced like the beginning of his name, not Jonah(a friend of our's still calls him that and it annoys me)
Still loves being on his computer.

The tub/shower is in, but will need a lot of finishing work around the edges, which I hope to do this weekend, or at least get the materials for. When they ripped the old one out, they scobbed up the paint around the edges of the new one. Not unexpected. That's often why you see wide or tile trim around bath edges, in order to cover up the construction ouchies. Corey hasn't yet fixed the emergency brake on the pickup, so I have to wait until he's home with the work pickup to get the trim I'll need. Well done you on getting the two new doors up!
Regarding the meat/dairy/plant conundrum, I have a hard time eating a lot of meat, for various reasons. Ham almost always smells rancid to me. Pork is usually too dry, except for bacon, which I could live on, I think. I can deal with ground beef, but have developed an aversion to steaks and roasts, as they tend to stick somewhere in the digestive system. I like chicken, but have to be careful and make sure it's either very crunchy or very saucy, or it ends up getting stuck as well. I absolutely adore shrimp, but it's awfully spendy. I eat tuna for lunch at least once a week, but no more than twice due to the mercury thing. Fish such as cod, I absolutely love, but Corey hates. He grew up in Alaska on the coast, so it was a regular as a child, and then worked on a tender for quite some time, handling fish all day long. Turned him off of fish forever, I think. And, since I'm lazy and don't want to cook for myself, I just don't eat fish.
But, like you, I have a tendency to get most of protein from dairy. I have a feeling that's part of my gaseous maximus. Even though I don't eat lots of it at a time, I do tend to eat enough that it's possible the accumulation becomes gas-producing. I've never found a plant-based anything that I'm willing to eat twice, but I did pick up some tofu this week, and will experiment with various preparations. (Suggestions welcome from anyone!) I am always searching for new ways to get protein in my system without it going into an uproar.
I'm also horribly sensitive still to sugar, while still craving it, and it causes enormous upset too. There are so many possible culprits, that's why I picked up the app. I need to know what I'm doing to myself with food, and find out what I need to increase or give up in order to stop farting like a pet raccoon.
Might as well laugh, right?
Love y'all,
Lisa

Hello everyone. I'd like to introduce myself. My name is Susan. I'm 55 and have 60# to loose. I'm new to fitness pal and am still figuring things out. My biggest challenge right now is eating healthy meals throughout the day and logging my food. In the past I used Noom and lost 100 lbs. But have recently gained back 60. I need to get back in control of my eating and relearn healthy habits. Easier said than done. The struggles that come with age and being post menopausal are terrible. Things don't work like they used to in my 40's when I lost the 100lbs. This sucks.
Any suggestions on how to mitigate this is welcome and appreciated.11 -
Karen Hoping it is not raccoons. Check with insurance if it is major. Need to find where they are coming in and seal the opening. Happened to a friend and they had to have it professionally cleaned and all new insulation because of raccoons. It is not a job for the average homeowner because droppings can be toxic. Every fall at our son's house I have to leave the lights on at night to deter bats from getting inside.
Interesting about fire and pets. Last night while cooking the smoke detector went off. DrewB went and hid. She is not afraid of fireworks or loud dogs. The alarm upset her. I know now if there is a fire where she will go and hide. Small children can respond in the same way. Important info to know if heaven forbid you have a fire in your home.3 -
Pip was & is a great help. I am not skilled in computers. My Apple laptop is with my son now. He took it home to Virginia with him. I understood that computer well. I’m going to talk to my son. I hope he will clean it up and return it to me.. The phone is an excellent item, but is not in the league of my laptop.

Yay Katla! Yay Pip!
I ate 1104 calories today, and after horse and dumbbells, should have a deficit of 388. Yay! This diet is really working for me. It has some sugar, and I really ought to swap the chocolate for broccoli, but let not the perfect be the enemy of the good!

Hi Gals,
Sitting in a hospital room, mom’s surgery is scheduled for 6pm tonight and will be 3 hours long, she broke the hip in 2 places still waiting for the orthopedic doctor to come by…I have questions.. and I am sure my question vib is keeping him/her away – LOL If mom moves much at all she is in sever pain, so is dozing as much as she can.
Pip THANK you for helping Katla!!!
Katla – welcome back.
Lisa – great idea on tracking. I love tofu, it is at least once a week in my dinner plans. The silken or soft is great as a fat substitute. So instead of the fat in brownies (I think michele does that) or other recipes where the fat or eggs are not the leavening agent. It is also good blended into a smoothe (instead of yogurt) - But for most things I buy the extra firm, and then put it between towels (the non-fluffy ones) and drain it, often with weight on it – so a larger flat plate with a big can works. Then after 30-45 minutes I will marinade it in the flavors of my choice. So it can be Asian inspired or Mexican or…. I will mix up taco seasoning with just enough water to make a soft paste and paint it on the tofu then cut it into match sized pieces put it with peppers or small diced potatoes or beans as taco or enchilada filling.
Mom woke up got go

DH & I have been in Illinois near our daughter for several months now. He has been in and out of hospitals. He has several health problems but has found a good doctor for his heart issues.
He is making progress and is working to improve heart health and has begun work on walking to build strength and balance. He is doing better. I hope he continues to improve. I am delighted to hear and see improvement.

Lisa - I too have been wondering about Tofu. Seems like sometimes meat is just plain hard for me to digest, sits there like a lump and I don't eat much at a time. Cut up in soups and stews, it seems to do OK. I'm guessing my absent gall bladder is at least partially responsible.
Thank you Kim for your suggestions on how to use it. I used to eat it decades ago, marinating in soy sauce, etc. DH wasn't a fan and then some scare came out about soy and breast cancer so I left it alone. Turns out, from what I've recently read, soy actually prevents breast cancer. I'm going to pick some up at the store and get going with it. I see lots of recipes on the internet.
And Kim - so sorry to hear about your mom's upcoming surgery today. I recall when my mom broke her hip, she ended up with just a very small (to me) scar at the top of her leg. Your mom's sounds more complicated. Broken in 2 places, wow. I'm guessing it was a fall? Thank you for filling us in.
Debbie - so cute about your son! Does he have a job with computers? He could have probably also fixed Katla's log-in problem in 2 seconds. Does your DH eat Tofu and if so, any recipes? That's something about his hours getting cut way back. Maybe in a week they'll want him back at 32 hours again.
Katla - welcome back, great to see Schooner again. Pip is da bomb
Rebecca - loved the photo of Athena helping dad.
Annie - sorry, I keep forgetting to congratulate you on your weight loss last month. Way to go! Your poor dad, I'm sure your mom's continuing fragility is weighing on him whether he admits it or not. Worry can take over our brains. I'm always happy to hear you are still riding horses when you get a chance and hope it continues.

Happy Birthday today, Vicki!
Welcome @sista67 Susan ! Logging food and weighing portions was a real eye-opener to me. Try different activities to find some you enjoy. Baby steps. You can do this.
@Katla49 Hip, Pip Hooray!!! So delightful to see Schooner’s pic again.
Oh Annie, tax troubles on top of everything else?!? :brokenheart:
Kay know what you mean about protein bars instead of real food. A timesaver but takes its toll.
Lisa is there a way you can check taxpayer on that lot? Or is that how you already contacted them? “…jumping jacks, you’ll feel better…” LOL! Hope the symptom tracker gives you some clear answers.
Rebecca “…more important how (you) feel…” Truth this. Hugs for your disappointment.
Carol at least you lost 5, more than I did. Thankful my average weight stayed the same.
Pip brava and thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Allie yes you were there for that reason. What a blessing your ears, shoulder and experience were to that woman.
Michele tracing paper haha! I could do that too, but could never color the picture as beautifully as Machka does.
Tracey fingers Xd for the new job. Have you met the supervisor?
Debbie relieved to see your post. Was beginning to worry.
Tere ((hugs)) Whooshing you peace and your DH pain relief.
Kim ((hugs held extra long)) prayer said for your mom, her caregivers and you. Take care of yourself, and if your brother comes around, watch your back.
Machka never have I ever had a MySpace account or listened to music on a Walkman (other brands yes, Walkman no) We still have a functioning VHS recorder/player and tapes, but the Betamaxes are all gone.
Viv
Kylia your joy in driving your Miata shines through. Glad you have that refuge.
Karen have I told you lately how jealous I am of your grands and your geezer place?
Ginny who will take up the burden of those discussions when you retire?
Heather gorgeous pic and Bravissima for the 400 words!
Carla amen to the snow melting and blue skies.
Rita and Carol Joe has no patience with tech either but I’m grateful he doesn’t try and get angry, just hands it to me. However, there is a stubborn streak when he wants to do something. His latest bug is DIY acupuncture, wanted me to order the needles. Thankful to read that distribution is restricted by federal law to licensed practitioners. Hope that deters him but he’s muttering about sewing needles… :’(
Margaret good advice especially about where pets and littles hide.
Lanette well done on the cabinet doors. Sad but true these days about what a workman might unintentionally share with a thief.
Annie, Heather, Lisa, Okie, Sue. Karen (twice :> ), Terri, Michele, Machka, Kylia, Carla et al thanks for the birthday wishes! I did treat myself. Line dance class, then made myself a feast: 150g baked russet potato with 1.5 T butter and 3 T lowfat sour cream, 4 oz steak, big salad with 16 g Roquefort, 3.5 glasses red wine, 2 Riesen chocolate covered caramels and 2 squares Ghirardelli 72% intense dark chocolate. AND instead of eating in front of the TV, I sat at the table and read a favorite cozy mystery, Charlotte Macleod’s The Withdrawing Room. Joe bought the wine but eats at way different times from me. As another birthday gift, he encouraged me to leave the dishes for him to wash. What a guy!
2. Notice three things you find beautiful in the outside world: Tumble wriggling in the meadow grass. Shadow leaping to catch the ball Joe throws. Dove cooing in the forest.
