WARNING: Following this thread may be addictive; it gets very talkative...miss a day and you can be 50 posts behind. This is the most popular challenge on MFP. If you found us in the middle (or end) of the month, you're still very welcome to join in - no requirements or special invite needed. Once you post, that's it you're in. And yes, we do this every month.
You set your own pace and distance for the month. We will all be doing it together. This is your virtual running group to help keep you accountable, to enjoy a virtual post-run coffee with your fellow runners, and to make new friends and learn a few things.
This is a continuation from the June 2023 Monthly Running Challenge which can be found at:
https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10891518/june-2023-monthly-running-challenge/p1
Anyone can join in, new and old, and if you found this thread late, you can join in at any time.
We have members ranging from total beginners all the way to Boston Qualifiers and beyond. We are a friendly and encouraging bunch. You never need to be ashamed of your miles. If you are making the effort, you will find only support here.
Here are the details from last month that apply again:
Anybody want to join in for a running challenge? Set a goal here and update us every day. OPTIONAL: You can post your progress by creating a ticker at http://www.tickerfactory.com (if creating one seems difficult, or you're like me and can't be bothered, then just type in your daily miles in this thread).
You can run, walk, or do treadmill - just be consistent. Don't let the high (or low) goals of others intimidate you. Some do 25 miles, others do 50, some go higher than that, some do lower; it's entirely your goal and therefore completely up to you. We help motivate each other, so what do you say? If you're new to running, set a low goal. If you're from a part of the world where miles aren't your thing, log your distances in KMs. And if you'd rather log your progress by time rather than distance, then you're entirely free to do that as well.
Feel free to set your goal now but wait until July 1, 2023 to start logging your runs!
Also, don't forget to join our group which can be found at:

Find a small group of runners that encourage and offer food support:
https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10573619/runners-that-need-some-nutritional-accountability#latest
Note: we also have a group on Strava and Facebook.
After you run, come into this thread and post what you did (don't forget to hit the bookmark in the upper right corner to bookmark this thread). Simply keep a running tally of what you've done this month and interact with the others. Many folks come in here and chit-chat it up, even on their rest days or while recouping from injury. This is a very social group and we talk about many things (sometimes even about running). It's a very friendly bunch here so don't be afraid to say hi (even if this is your first time), talk about a recent or up-coming race, ask questions, provide answers, or just lurk-n-learn. Participation is what makes this group successful.
Not quite sure how to log your runs? Follow the examples of many other challenge members. Even take a peek at last month's thread (posted above).
*******OPTIONAL TICKER*************
Info on tickers since I know there will be questions. Sign up for an account at http://www.tickerfactory.comandcreate your ticker. Then you need to update it after you finish a run and post it here. Here is what you will need to do.
After setting up your ticker, you will need to make note of the weblink they give you so you can return. An example would be:
http://www.tickerfactory.com/exercise/w6K1EiX/ <<<< the last part will be a part of the image link (explained below) that will be supplied to you after you initially create your link.
When you return to TickerFactory with the weblink, go to your settings page. Make sure you type your PIN in that you set when you created your ticker account. Then, where it says "Your current cumulative value", there is an add button. Simply add the distance that you just did, and the cumulative value automatically changes. Then hit next.
After adding your new miles (or KMs) to your ticker, you need to post it here.
After you hit next, it will give you a bunch of codes suggesting how to display your ticker.
Use the one at the bottom where it says Direct Image URL:
It will look something like:
http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/w6K1EiX/exercise.png
To display that correctly in your post, make sure you place the image (img) tags around that link. So it will look something like the following (but removing the spaces in the img tags):
[ img ] http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/w6K1EiX/exercise.png [ /img ]
^^^^^^^ Don't forget to remove the spaces between the brackets ^^^^^^^^^^
Some key things to pay attention to when posting your ticker:
Use the link that ends in .png
Remember the [ img] and [ /img] tags go in between the link
Remove the spaces in the img tags before posting
YES, there is a / in the second /img tag
By the way, everyone here should consider themselves a runner no matter how fast or slow. There's no judgment, we all started somewhere. And no comparisons, except with your former self. Don't compare your Chapter 1 to somebody else’s Chapter 20.

You may see some phrases / words that are unique to our little group when it comes to describing some of our runs. It is a mash-up of words that seem to best describe the way the run felt that day. Here are some examples. Feel free to come up with your own to add to the dictionary 😃

I’m going to set a 100 mile goal but honestly don’t know if I can get there. My family is traveling to Italy for a couple of weeks and I definitely won’t be doing 50 mile weeks the 2 weeks I am in town. I have plans to run some just as a way to see Rome a bit. I guess we’ll see.10
-
Thanks @martaindale
Plan is for 45 miles. Lower than before however this is all run rather than wun or jalk.
Happy second half of the year everyone!6 -

Going for 85 this month...
Will lose a week whilst I'm on vacay in Wisconsin and Montreal... Maybe 1 run in each.
So aiming for 22-23 6K run.
PS: @martaindale Rome sounds lovely! A gelato from Venchi by Trevi fountain!8 -
Thanks @martaindale
I adore Rome. I see Tarun's gelato and up the stakes by suggesting Tartufo from Tre Scalini in Piazza Navona. Now THAT is to die for! I always said the only marathon I wanted to run was Rome and had a goal to do so before I hit 50. Then the Sherry marathon happened this year, but Rome is still on my bucket list. Early morning runs near the river and Vatican city are very enjoyable ;-)
No set mileage goal for me this month, but June ended up at 172km and I aim to increase volume a little, so will see. Real goal is to stick to the plan and, of course, do the damn strength training!7 -

Loving all the food suggestions! My husband and I are big on exploring local food culture when we travel and we will be in Rome for most of the first week. Lots of opportunities to try things!
We are staying near Vatican city, basically right by the river so already had those spots earmarked for runs. It's nice to hear those spots are good options.tarun_yadavA wrote: »PS: @martaindale Rome sounds lovely! A gelato from Venchi by Trevi fountain!
Oh, so much gelato will be had. I'll make a note of that spot!7 -
400 is goal, 500 is push with heat and family visiting.
Intermittent posts over this week as my siblings are here to see Mom and her birthday is July 4th.11 -
Trying for 150km in July. I hope I’ll have better luck than in June. I really need to up my mileage, but I will be truly satisfied if I make it to 150 due to school getting out, day care closing and leaving for California in the last half of the month. My main hope is to get into a rhythm of running there, although I really despise neighbourhood runs (much more of a forest/ field - no car sounds runner) . Fingers crossed that I can make it happen!8
-
Mmm, gelato.
My goal is to, once medically cleared, log some running miles in July. It will be late July and it will not be a lot, but it will happen! In the meantime, continue daily walks, add in some lower body strength, and some non-impact light(ish) cardio at least 2x a week.9 -
Thanks for setting us up @martaindale. I hope you have a fabulous trip. I have always wanted to see Italy.
Happy Birthday to your mom @AlphaHowls.
I am in for 115 miles in July. It may be tough I'd it stays this hot, but I will give it a shot.4 -
Morning all
Got in a 6K
Hope you guys across the Pond have a nice long weekend 😊7 -
My Apple watch is so silly. It saw that I took a lot of days off in June (10 days without runs which is unheard of for me really) and it gave me a July goal of 21 runs of 5 min or longer. Heck Alphahowls could knock triple that out in 1 day. Anyway. My avg miles per day was only 2.5 in June and 3.7 in May vs 4.7 in April so I think I will set a goal of 100 miles as it is a longer month and that is improvement avf from last month.
I missed this link somehow dangit but found you in challenges! Excited for a new month as always.7 -
Great goals everyone. Thanks @martaindale for setting up the thread. Sounds like you are going to have a great trip.
I hope you enjoy your siblings visit and your mom had a good birthday @AlphaHowls . Maybe you can take some time for yourself while they are there to help take care of your mom.
Great running @tarun_yadavA . So glad to see that your knee seems to be recovering well.
I have a trip to FL planned for the middle of the month, so will probably have some single mile walking days, just to keep the streak up. I am still going to set a goal of 80 miles (running and fast walking) again and see how I do. I hope to increase that eventually, but 80 seems to be doable for me for now.5 -
Glad you found us @SummerSkier 😁
Started July off with a HM. It was hot and muggy, but at least the sun wasn't beating down 100% of the time.
7 -
Side note- does anyone here on Strava get those 'On this day 1y ago' reminders?
😔
10K at 08"30.... after 40 consecutive runs.
@quilteryoyo ooohhh nice! Whereabouts in Florida?
@Scott6255 well done on a Half in the heat!5 -
Great way to start the second half of the year @Scott6255
I think Strava would struggle for those '1 year ago' prompts @tarun_yadavA as I was doing absolutely nothing exercise-wise then!
Upped my target to 50 miles. Couldn't resist kicking off H2 2023 with a parkrun when it should have been a rest day!

Yeah, I wish my siblings did know how to be caregivers, but alas and alack, no.
Just so you know I am not completely heartless when I left those cats in the dead end a couple of weeks back.Popped out of the woods around mile 5, ran with us for 3 miles. I finally had to scoop the little trooper up and deposit him at my home. Family located a few hours later, all is well.
9 -
Wait. @AlphaHowls He ran with you for 3 miles! 😳 Glad you got him home.
Getting used to the salt tabs. Anything to prevent cramps! Thanks for the recommendations
5 miles today plus another .75 at lunch screwing with Apple Watch challenge. Lol. A good start and for a change I did not overdo the first day and exhaust myself for the next. Totally dripping 💦💧💦💧

Gelato, tartufo, oh my! Roman cuisine, yum! (Artichokes!)
My goal for July is 40 miles again.

July Goal: 115 Miles
7/1: 1.26 miles
1.26/115 miles completed for July
I just ran 1.25 miles today. July is a streak month for Run the Year. You have to run, walk, cycle, swim etc. one mile per day. You can even count elliptical and other things. I usually run, but I have counted walking before. I was thinking that I might walk some this month, but when I got up I saw that there were thunderstorms heading our way and figured it would be quicker to run. Plus it was only 76°F. I am hoping it will be a little cooler tomorrow morning. Last week the lows were in the 80's all week and the highs were around 107°. I think we have only been up to 77° today and it has rained all day. Hopefully it will be nice tomorrow for my long run.

Way to start out the month @Scott6255 !
@tarun_yadavA I'm going to Melbourne FL. My late husband's family all live in Palm Bay, which is fairly close. I'll be staying at a B&B on the beach. I stayed there last year and really liked it. I am actually going to go to his ex wife's family reunion. We are great friends and she has been trying to get me to come for a few years now. I know that all of the family makes sure they get off work for that, so it's the best way to make sure I see everyone (2 step-children, 5 step-grandchildren, and 9 step- greatgrandchildren). I figured I would give it a try and if I feel awkward, I'll know not to do that again.
@AlphaHowls I understand. My brother isn't a caregiver either. It's hard when it all falls on your shoulders. I'm surprised the cat stayed with you for 3 miles too! So glad you found it's home and it's okay.
Great start to the month @kgirlhart . I'm glad it was cooler for you today.

AlphaHowls wrote: »@SummerSkier wrote: »Wait. @AlphaHowls He ran with you for 3 miles! 😳 Glad you got him home.
This is how I got my cat! He followed me home one morning. I carried him across the intersections because I didn’t want to be responsible for him getting hit by a car, but he did the bigger part of a mile by himself.

July 1 : Walk 1.00 mile Run 2.00 miles treadmill
3.00/80 mile goal
I did a treadmill run this morning. Following my plan to work my way up to running at 5.5 mph for 30 min straight, I did 12 x (1/1 min at 5.5/3.8 mph) plus 1:33 min at 5.5 mph. I had some tummy issues earlier in the day, so wasn't sure how it would go, but it was okay and I've felt pretty good since.
Afterwards, my neighbor and I went down and built an electric fence around mom's garden. We're hoping to keep the racoons and ground hogs out. It was 88F (31.3C) when I got home, so we were all sweaty messes.
If someone can help me with the ticker I would appreciate it. I get on the site, but it seems to get in a loop when it is putting up the tickers to chose from and won't let me create. I used to do it, so I think I know what I am doing, but it just hasn't worked for me in over a month.6 -
July total: 5.2/100 miles
7/1: 5.2 miles
We picked up our kid from camp today so I woke up early to squeeze a short run in before we had to leave. Found a few sprinklers, which felt really nice. Even for an early Saturday morning, it was really quiet. I think a lot of people left town for the holiday weekend. It was nice to run through an empty neighborhood.
It’s nice having the kid home. They had a good time at camp but said they think this is the last year they will go. I kind of hope they will change their mind but this may be another part of their life they have outgrown. We are currently doing our 3rd load of laundry and still have a couple to go to get everything clean. It’s amazing how stinky clothes can get!7 -
July 1 – 4.00 miles
It started storming around 6:00 am this morning and lasted a couple of hours. I didn’t get started on my run until 10:30 and it was already hot and humid. I accidentally paused my Garmin for half a mile but I was running the 1-mile loop at our local park so it was easy enough to get the correct mileage for my log. My goal for this month is to run at least a mile every day. The only exception will be if I go on a hike that is over 10 miles and includes climbing mountains. My hiking partner is recovering from surgery so it may be a while before we’re back out on the trails.
Thanks for starting this month’s thread @martaindale I hope you have a wonderful visit to Rome! Your runner-kitty is so cute and glad the kid is back home.
@quilteryoyo – Is Tippy making the trip with you to FL again this year?
Happy Birthday to your mom @AlphaHowls and enjoy the family visiting. Cute kitty – glad you were able to reunite it with its family.
Never heard of tartufo. Had to google it and, oh my! Looks so good!
5 -
Great start to July @martaindale . Glad your kid had a good time at camp and is now home.
@Teresa502 Nice run. We didn't get any rain/storms today. I guess they stayed North of us. Yes, Tippy is going with me again this year. Maybe she'll be a little braver with the waves. We'll see.3 -
Never heard of tartufo. Had to google it and, oh my! Looks so good!
I may not have the number right but Tre Scalini's tartufo has 13 different types of Swiss chocolate in it. Sinful heaven! Also @martaindale they're pricey but if you get them to go instead of sitting at a table and ordering to eat there they're a couple of euros cheaper ;-)2 -
Morning everyone!
Hope you all are having a nice long weekend!
I went for it a bit... Rolled the dice...
Got my new insoles. Told I could try and go back to normal... But form was key. Physio said to run with a straight back, chest puffed out... Like you're about to 'chest bump a Bro at a game'.
Let's see how it goes. 🤞🙏🤞🙏
(Ate all sorts of cr-p at my Mother's yesterday too, so had energy all pent up... Will go back to 6K for a few days at slower pace just to make sure I don't overdo it!)
@quilteryoyo - been to the Melbourne in Australia! But just googled it... Been to somewhere not far from there though. Indian river by Vero beach.
Have a lovely time and I hope it doesn't get awkward at all 🤞🙏6 -
