Hi from Rome! We landed pretty early in the morning on Sunday, so this is technically day 3. The first day we didn’t do much besides walk around and try to stay awake. We familiarized ourselves with the neighborhood and managed to make it until about 7 pm before we all crashed. We were up early for a train ride to Naples to catch a tour of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Super interesting but it was HOT! After several hours of walking around outside, we were all bushed. Today I ran early on a bike/hike trail along the river. It was nice to be off the street and not a lot of people were out until my run was wrapping up. Then we had breakfast, hung out a bit, then went to lunch before doing a tour of the catacombs. It was also really interesting, and best of all was mostly indoors and cool! I think it was @eleanorhawkins that recommended the tortufo. We had our first one tonight for dessert. Sooo good!! Thanks for the recommendation. We have also had some gelato, with plans to have more tomorrow. Also plenty of pasta and pizza. I’m getting up again to run in the morning before some shopping and an afternoon activity. Should be a fun day!9 -
@martaindale yay, enjoy! Funnily, I found card from Tre Scalini in a drawer yesterday which made me think of you, then saw this morning on Strava you ran in Rome and was wondering how the heat compares to what you're used to. Rome is generally a few degrees colder than here in the summer, I think.
Talking of heat, it's pretty horrible here this week. Currently 9.08pm and 30C inside my living room with all the windows open to get a breeze through.
I actually managed to run with the ladies I'm doing the relay ultra with on Sunday morning, and they asked me to take them to see that wolf statue I know how to get to. We had planned to go tomorrow evening, time it to see the sunset from the tol then come back down with headlamps. But then I checked the forecast and it says 35C at 10pm!!!!! So yeah, not gonna happen. I'll head out early to do my 'horrible evil coach wants to kill me' 8 minute hill reps then come home and spend the day trying to hide from the sun.10 -
martaindale wrote: »@polskagirl01 I hear you on pop-tarts and their lack of redeeming nutritional value. But, if you’re going to have a pop-tart my vote is s’mores. By far the best pap-tart flavor.
S'mores flavor are good as well. My family did take the blueberry poptarts with them... but alas, my attempts to power up my shed yesterday were unsuccessful and I ended up doing grocery pickup to get two 100ft outdoor extention cords, and *somehow* new boxes of Poptarts made their way into my cart - Brown Sugar Cinnamon and Confetti Cupcake🧁. I considered trying Boston Creme, but these boxes should last me like 2 weeks, unless the kids eat them, so maybe after that. I also splurged on some good beef, and it was SO worth it (Poles love pork, but good beef is hard to find and expensive there). As for the shed... I've now got power and even went through a few boxes today, as I'd like to get rid of stuff and organize a bit up there. Goal is to make it so we can camp out in it. Groundhogs have allegedly already set up camp underneath, and the joke is it's so undermined with their tunnels that one day it's just going to drop like into a sinkhole 🤣.
Still haven't gotten around to that bike ride. Maybe I'm scared it will wear me out too much. But lifting boxes is a workout and I did mostly OK with that...10 -

It was 87°F, feels like 89° when I got up at 4:30 this morning. By 5:30 when I headed out, it was 85° feels like 88°. And it was 84° feels like 87° when I got home. I guess it was the coolest part if the day, but it was so hot. There were lots of grasshoppers and a few flew into me which was gross. I did manage to catch the sprinklers at the courthouse, but barely. They turned off just as I was almost past them so I was glad I didn't miss them. It really helped. I had one bug fly into my mouth, but I was able to spit him out. It kind of sounds like a horrible run, but it really wasn't. It was just hot and buggy, but I had my water bottle with me and I ran 6 miles and felt really good about it.
@martaindale Your trip sounds so fun.

Heating up in Cali...I'm reserving the right to complain about the heat, even if by comparison I'm being ridiculous.

Actual temps are not that different than Houston. Highs about 95-98F lows about 72-75F. The big difference is the humidity. This morning it was about 60% compared to 98% or so in Houston. I have been getting out a little after sunrise so even with temps already in the 70's it's pretty comfortable. During the day, it's just hot. And zero cloud cover so we are just a sweaty mess but so is everyone else. But if you are in the shade it feels decent.9 -

I went the other direction on the bike-hike trail this morning. Ended up in a more residential area. It's really nice having a protected path with no street crossings. The traffic is getting pretty busy by the time I am finishing and I think if you were trying to run on the sidewalks you would be stopped a lot and dodging scooters that don't really seem to follow the same traffic rules as the cars.
We are headed out in a minute to do a little shopping. My kid saw some shops they wanted to explore and there will of course be some more gelato! I haven't been great at taking pictures. The 2 on my Strava feed are basically it so far. Today maybe I'll take a few.9 -
Morning everyone.
Got in 4.5M (at 8"58).
@martaindale - glad to hear you're having fun! And eating away!!! Food pics!! C'monnnn
PS: best of both worlds... Go Denny's. Save yourself $20. The end. 😂5 -

Don’t hate me, but I had a nice 61F morning during my run. I’ll take it!
Sounds like you are having a wonderful time in Europe @martaindale! Enjoy every moment!
@polskagirl01 – Never heard of Confetti Cupcake poptarts but they sound yummy! I watch several YouTubers who are thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail and PopTarts seems to be a popular breakfast item to pack out of town when they resupply.

Very wet run last night but still good. My glutes or bottom was hurting for the whole run because I had a Thai massage yesterday afternoon. I needed to loosen out my shoulders and neck and she worked on the tightness in my hips too. I feeling very tender today all over and have some bruises coming out but everything feels looser so all good.

I'm enjoying the brunch talk. It's not a thing here in Ireland, all day breakfasts are more likely. In the summer of 1996 I worked in a hotel on Nantucket as a Receptionist and brunch was a huge thing. A 3-4 foot ice-sculpture used to be wheeled in very Sunday morning for it.7 -
today was the first day in a long time I did not feel like running was awful when I started. For the past few months I would say I have been dragging myself thru the motions for the first 3 miles before I felt normal. Today I did not start out feeling crappy! (the joys of aging and injury)
Closing in on 800 running miles for the year.

That's got to be a relief, you seemed to be quite stricken with something back in June, it's remarkable you powered through.
As time flies I find more value in pausing for little moments of gratitude that I remain upright and breathing. Snuck in between the great Denny's vs. brunch debates.4 -

Today I woke up feeling almost normal. Went for a super-short bike ride - my first this year! 5ish easy minutes out, then forced myself to turn around (and was glad I did because it was then slightly uphill for a good ways). It was short, but I put on all the regular gear, managed to see a pretty horse AND found some sort of woodworker's triangle on the road. Just like a regular bike ride, haha. So far I'm feeling fine and am laying by the lake. I missed my bike, but obviously have zero bike fitness and could feel that I didn't have any room to push it. Baby steps, forward, backwards, forward again, repeat.
Sitting on the front porch eating breakfast, I finally had enough of the one bigger set of wind chimes... put a gardening glove on the part that strikes the chimes to dampen it, and a minute later a little bird came and - I'm sure of it - thanked me 😆. The other chimes are fine, but this one, I don't know, something about the tones bugs me.

Welcome, for me the best time to join was a long time ago, the second best time is today. I'm pretty new on the thread and it has been great accountability.
Knock out that 20 mile for July goal, and you'll then start again fresh in August. No problem, that's how this place rolls.

It was another scorcher today. It was 85°F, feels like 90° this morning. I ran 6 miles again. I got out a little later than yesterday so I missed the sprinklers at the courthouse, but I did pass a yard with sprinklers so I did run past those. I also saw a skunk today, but otherwise it was basically the same run as yesterday.

Weird coincidence, my third 3.11 mile run this month, which is exactly 5K. One race and two random runs.

Had a good run yesterday evening after the first 5 mins when the muscles which are still sore warmed up especially at my hips. The weather was just right, warm with light breeze. I bought a new pair of brooks adrenalines a few months ago but haven't used them yet as my current pair were still fine but I think its time now as I had an ache in my left foot arch and knee. But then maybe its coming from the Thai massage. I really need to get a yoga class or do better stretching so I don't let myself get so tight again.

I cut it short this morning. It was 80F at sunrise and I couldn't fall asleep last night so just wasn't feeling it this morning. Still glad I did something. I saw my first wild hedgehog 🦔. So cute!
Last night we did a cooking class where we made our own pizza. Fun and delicious! Then did some shopping on the way back to the hotel. I bought some clothes at a store operated by an Italian lady who clearly understood some English but didn’t speak it; I speak a little Spanish so I can understand a tiny bit of Italian but don’t speak it. We had an entire conversation in different languages. It was kind of funny. Neither of us knew exactly what the other was saying but we got the job done. I’ve been a little surprised that my limited Spanish has been so helpful.
Taking it easy this morning before heading to the national museum this afternoon. We are switching hotels tomorrow so have to start packing/getting things together.

I'm continuing to build up my speed. Yesterday I was able to get 4 miles at an 11 minute pace. It was a bit of a push, but not too bad. I'm enjoying having the challenge, it makes the old treadmill runs a bit more exciting for me.8 -

That's awesome @Zaxa2021 some time consistently working it and now you're starting to have some breakthroughs. I like the 'not too bad' quip about cranking out 11:00 min/mile longer runs.

I'm a couple days behind...due to travel. I'll try to catch up, but may have to just like and hug more than I normally do. I'll try to post my exercise adventures later - maybe tomorrow.
Congrats on your 4 mile run @TheMrWobbly ! And on getting in the marathon!
Great run in those conditions @Scott6255 .
Sounds like you may be making a little progress @polskagirl01 . That's good to see. Lifting boxes is certainly a good workout. Great job on the bike ride and calming down the wind chimes. I am not a wind chime person. I would rather hear the leaves blowing. Can this be our next debate?
@Teresa502 . We have had some really cool days in July! Great running and love the picture.
Glad you are enjoying Rome @martaindale ! And, great job getting your exercise in too!
@eleanorhawkins Great running. I hope you get some cooler weather soon.
Great running @kgirlhart . I'm glad the courthouse sprinklers stopped after you ran through them. I would probably cry if they stopped just before you got there.
Great running @Mari33a .
Glad your run was better @SummerSkier !
Gotta go. My computer battery is getting low and the room doesn't have a good place to set up to work on it while it is plugged in. I'll try catching up tomorrow. If not, I will eventually. LOL
