Question of the day: Have any of you ever used a personal trainer? If so, would you mind telling about your experience - are you still utilizing what you were taught?
I watched the latest Zoe presentation this morning: Resistance training: how to stay strong as you age | Prof. Brad Schoenfeld. Excellent as always, Jonathan is such a good interviewer.
Kylia - Do you wear a pedometer or some type of step-counter? I'm willing to bet you get a lot of steps in by the end of the day. Even though I had "sit down" office jobs, it was surprising how active I really was. Going to the copy machine or up to the counter or walking to another department to ask a question or deliver paperwork. Moving boxes. Bending and lifting in the supply closet. I really should have given myself more credit for that activity at the time.
I'm so glad to read you are able to attend things with your daughter and get a happy break from your routine.
Heather - welcome home. At this stage in my life, I am grateful for the traveling I was able to do when I was younger.
Which brings me to something I've been asking myself lately - am I making some decisions based on the fact that I'm closer to death (hopefully 20 plus years away but still, I'm on the downhill slope)? Shouldn't I be more interested in living life NOW and not worrying about what I'll be doing or where I'll be living in 10 years?
Barbie's new dog prompted my pondering this again. So many folks I know are hesitant to get pets when they reach their 70's. Are they eliminating potential joy and adventure, companionship and exercise? A girlfriend messaged me last night that a little kitten showed up at her son's house, it was scared and crying and he was unable to get it since it retreated into the bushes. She drove to his house and also tried, and in the end they just put out food for it and a box with a towel and are hoping it makes it through the night. She asked if I wanted a new kitten. My old kitty is on her last legs. So.... do I want to bring a new kitty into HER life right now plus - cats can live 15 years or more. Where will I be? When DH was alive and somewhat healthy, even a few years ago, that never concern never crossed my mind.
I think a new shop kitten will be in the cards at some point. Keep the mice at bay. I'm leaving it up to fate at this point.
Make it a super Friday!

SW WA State - drizzly and cool and I'm so grateful I got leaves cleaned up and some mowing done yesterday.6 -

Enjoying some beautiful fall weather with DS and DrewB. This was taken in the park that is near us. I told son of the near miss with the young pedestrian. He travels on the roads that he has to watch out for deer. Next time I go to see him I will now go down for lunch so I will not have to drive in the dark.
Barbie Congratulations on your new puppy.

In the middle of the night we changed Laney's name to Annie because Jake has had two people in his life named Laney that don't hold good memories. We like the new name.
I don't know which sounds more exhausting, Heather's trip home from France or our first day with Annie. Lots of fun with many challenges. Jake and I have worked amazingly well as a team and Bessie is getting used to the new bundle of energy that has taken over our house.
Lanette, I had a personal trainer at the gym I went to in 1980 and it was a delight. Otherwise, I have relied on videos and books.
I live in a 55+ neighbourhood with many people with dogs. Most are mixed breed or shelter dogs. Several women I know have gotten dogs after the death of their old one. We have a provision in our will for who will get our dogs when we die along with money set aside for that person. If Jake weren't so distressed by the presence of a litter box, we'd get another cat. I am 77 years old and Jake is 78.
Too distracted to write more

Good morning ladies!
Barbie Laney looks like a wonderful happy dog!
Heather welcome home, glad you had a good trip.
My mom is still in rehab. Very slowly getting slightly stronger. We have a care team meeting today. Dad is so eager for Mom to come home, but then he won't be doing any of the work. I'm nervous about the next step. Will I be able to leave the house at all? Will I have any time or energy for my own mental health? Am I selfish for being concerned about myself?
A friend sent me some writing to review, and I don't even have a word processor set up. I have slipped.
Mom is cheerful and has no pain, so for her it's a question of bathing, medicines, meals, and moving around the house. I'm afraid she will try to go back to using the stove. I can make her meals, but I can't be with her 24/7 to keep her out of the kitchen. I need to read up on stove locks again.
Well instead of worrying, I should write down some questions.

I weighed myself. I gained six pounds in the last month. No wonder my clothes are tight again.

Annie - is there someone like a social worker affiliated with the Rehab facility you could talk to about your questions and concerns? I'm thinking of someone who would be looking out for your welfare first? You have a lot of plates spinning in the air.
You are not being selfish at all. If you end up with health problems due to the stress you are under, I don't think you'll be much help to either of your parents.
Hopefully you can get some good answers at the Care Team meeting today.
Many, many hugs heading your way from my house today.
Lanette3 -
Annie- please speak with social services...they are such a wealth of information for both you and your parents.
Barbie-Annie is adorable and will keep you both busy..
Ive tried to talk to Tracy. Miles wakes up during the night and knows that mommy will come up and sleep with him
. She says Kyles job is more important and he is the breadwinner and needs his sleep. And I argued you work full time and do everything else.. keep Carmines bed set up,buy Kyle ear plugs he can close the bedroom door ,for a week she can sleep in Carmines bed there is a door at the top of there stairs. Close that door and then she has to train Miles to sooth himself back to sleep
She said she will talk to Kyle about it.. she is losing sleep, but its ok for Kyle to sleep ugh.4 -
cityjaneLondon wrote: »Lisa - Did you do that at your classes, or at home? I'm presuming the glass stays in there. I could do a similar thing with the girls as I bought Edie the clays last Christmas. They are expensive, so it would be a small vase! Probably an egg cup! I imagine there are YouTube videos?
Love to all, Heather UK xxxxxxxx
Heather - I designed and created the polymer clay cladding on the vase at home - we're still throwing bowls in pottery class. I did two more yesterday but forgot to take pics. But for polymer clays, there are loads and loads of videos. For what I made, the glass does stay encased in the clay - glass vases are quite inexpensive here, only three dollars at Walmart for one that's about 8 inches high, and the next time I go to the thrift store, I'll look for other pieces there even cheaper.
The clay cladding on the glass vase is a very thin coat of clay, the tree is about a quarter-inch thick at the trunk, but the larger spaces are covered with barely a millimeter of clay, so it goes a long way. I ran it through a pasta machine, but you can roll clay with anything round, like a small jar or rolling pin. Anything that will go in the oven at 275F (135C) without damage can be used as either an armature (like the glass vase, where it stays) or as a slump mould, such as a bowl or plate that you can turn upside down and then take it off once your clay is baked.
I've got a couple of battery strings of fairy lights on order, as well as a couple more glass vases, as I want to make other pieces. This time, I want to carve patterns in the soft clay to show through once it's baked. Still thinking it through. It's definitely got my creativity in gear!SophieRosieMom wrote: »Question of the day: Have any of you ever used a personal trainer? Lanette
Lanette - Well, in my checkered past, I WAS a personal trainer, if that's helpful. When I ran a fitness center in Illinois, I was the one who brought in new members, ran them through the basics, according to what they were trying to accomplish, and then was available for two more sessions for free. After that, they had to pay for my time. About 1 in ten made it as far as the third session - not because of me, I hasten to add, but just because that's how long it took for them to quit.
I'm almost as bad, so I have no room to talk, but one thing my sister and I have figured out is the rule of threes... the third time, third week, third month, etc., always seems to be the hardest. If you can make it past those points with almost anything, you're doing well. Probably not helpful, sorry!
Last but not least - get a cat. If you want a cat (or kitten), get a cat, or if you want a dog, get a dog. Pretty sure that Barbie & Jake are a bit older than you are, and they still have much love to give, as do you.
Barbie - Annie looks like an absolute love, and very definitely NOT afraid of Jake!
More later, my chickens, time for chores... a little laundry, a little vacuuming, and then on with the rest of the day. Possibly more clay (I can get a little obsessed... )
Love,
Lisa

1.Write down three things you can look forward to this month. 1. Another month of sobriety 2. Cooler weather 3. Decorating for Halloween18. Set hopeful, but realistic goals for the days ahead. My biggest hope for the near future is a holiday without depression and ‘drama’ caused by my family.
2. Find something to be optimistic about (even if it’s a difficult time). I am optimistic about cooler weather.
3. Take a small step to a goal that really matters to you. I need to call my uncle.
4. Start the day with the most important thing on your to-do-list. Updating this list and My Fitness Pal.
5. Be a realistic optimist. See life as it is but focus on what’s good. I usually hope for the best but prepare for the worst. I think this counts!
6. Remind yourself that things can change for the better. No matter how bad you think it is, it can always get worse. So enjoy life no matter where you are, or what you are doing, or your circumstances.
7. Look for the good in people around you today. I can do this if I try. This was not difficult to do with visitors. Employees were a different matter!
8. Make some progress on a project or task you’ve been avoiding. I need to clean the cabinets out. I am planning to start today. Didn’t happen.
9. Share an important goal with someone you trust. did not do this.
10. Take time to reflect on what you have accomplished recently. I have accomplished coloring pages, making doctor appointments, calming my nerves by taking some actions I never tried before, and more.
11. Avoid blaming yourself or others. Find a helpful way forward. This is hard for me.
12. Look out for positive news and reasons to be cheerful today. With everything going on around me and in me this will be hard, but I will pay attention to good news.
13. Ask for help to overcome an obstacle you are facing. The obstacles I have cannot be solved by me, but by family members.
14. Do something constructive to improve a difficult situation. I will have to think on this. I posted pictures of the eclipse that happened here on the Friends Group FB page, and sent some pics to my son and grandson.
15. Thank yourself for achieving the things you often take for granted. I got up in a thankful mood today so I should be able to do this. The eclipse yesterday couldn’t have gone better.
16. Put down your to-list and do something fun or uplifting. I will color, walk, and meditate-all things that are fun and uplifting to me.
17. Take a small step toward a positive change you want to see in society. Teaching adults computer use provides a positive change in my community.
19. Identify one of your positive qualities that will be helpful in the future. I think my tenacity will always be helpful to me and others.
20. Find joy in tackling a task you’ve put off for some time. This will have to wait as I am not feeling too good today. Fall cold.21. Let go of the expectations of others and focus on what matters to you.
22. Share a hopeful quote, picture, or video with a friend or colleague
23. Recognize that you have a choice of what to prioritize.
24. Write down three specific things that have gone well recently.
25. You can’t do everything! What are three priorities right now?
26. Find a new prospective on a problem you face.
27. Be kind to yourself today. Remember progress takes time.
28. Ask yourself ‘will this still matter a year from now?’
29. Plan a fun or exciting activity to look forward to.
30. Identify three things that give you hope for the future.
31. Set a goal that brings a sense of purpose for the coming month.

I really should type down responses as I go! I had a whole bunch of comments I wanted to post and have forgotten them all. Today is international SLOTH day. Picture in spoiler:For some reason, my iPad all of a sudden, won’t let me size the pictures!
I have tested for CoVid and negative. We will just have to postpone booster shots for a while. My cold is much milder than DH, who still has a congested sounding cough. There are reasons for that: I take Zinc (for my thyroid-it helped it a lot!), and Vitamin C just to boost my immunity. Because of those, I was sick starting Wednesday afternoon, all day yesterday and feel a bit better today. I had to cancel my computer class yesterday because I don’t want to spread this. A couple more reasons my DH’s cold is dragging on: he smokes a pipe, and drinks rum almost every night. Soooo, I will continue my good habits! (67 days SOBER) YAY me!!
Sleep type I am mostly a Dolphin but don’t have trouble going to sleep, but feel tired most of the day and hate getting up in the morning. My most productive time is late-morning, early afternoon, so I am a combination of animals! LOL
Pets as we Age I see myself always having a dog. I can’t have cats because I am allergic to them AND hate dealing with litter boxes!
I had more, but can’t remember. So have a GREAT day ladies!

Annie Ask lots of questions! Your health is the most important. I am glad your mom is doing well but you must take care of you!
Lanette I do wear my fitbit. I average around 6000 steps at work. The counter is only 18ft long. I rarely sit even though I have a stool. I do realize that a lot of steps are missed as my left hand isn't moving even if feet are (ie marching or rocking in place). That is one reason I don't take MFP or Fitbit as set in stone. A companion is not out of the question. You should be living for the healthy you Now! I do believe preparing things for those left is important, but then maybe it is freeing for us after that. I feel you are still healing from caregiver role, but you need to live for now.
Rita I hope you are feeling a little better.
Allie You are in a tough position. Hugs!
Better get back to work.

Insomnia again last night-should have taken melatonin earlier but didn't think I would need it-I was wrong-took it late and now feeling groggy.
Went of facebook and the first post is from my cousin's ex wife-their daughter Isabella has breast cancer. She is about 30yrs old- radiation, chemo and lump removed soon, or has just been done.
Prayers needed for her.
Temp today is 20degrees cooler than yesterday. That will be a nice change when I walk this afternoon.5 -
My DH found this yesterday. This is from my Senior year in high school. I am on the right with the black hair! Wow, 1974!

Kim How terrifying to find fire both in front and behind your mom’s property. I, too, vividly remember Loma PrietaI was at work at 333 Market Street in San Francisco. As the building started to sway one of our coworkers who’d suffered a disastrous quake as a child ran screaming through the office. My boss grabbed her and hugged her under a desk. After it settled we boarded a bus to go home to the East bay. As it drove up the entrance ramp it stopped as hundreds of people were walking back down the ramp because sections of the Bay Bridge had collapsed. Boss and I then walked to a friend’s apartment in the Castro. On the way, the Marina fires lit the sky. Later that evening everyone else who was camped out in that friend’s apartment had gotten through to their East Bay friends/family but me. Finally got through to a friend who’d been with Joe and assured me he was ok. The friend then drove to our house and found that the quake had knocked our phone off the hook. That, and a little mortar off our chimney was the only damage to our 1890s Queen Anne Victorian cottage that was only a block and a half from the collapsed section of the Nimitz freeway. Bless the person who’d had the brick foundation capped. Hitched a ride with another co-worker the long way around the north bay home the next morning. Commuted by ferry for the following months, too freaked out to take BART under the bay.
Later, lighter, lovelies!
Barbara, the Southern Oregon Coastie AHMOD
October: Move more: chair yoga, line dance, dailyish PT, play with dogs.
Fuel better: less sugar, dailyish vitamins.
Live NOW: dailyish time with Joe, readings. Open heart and mind before mouth.
2023: Be of good cheer.
That is beyond scary- I was in Santa Rosa so felt it but no damage.
That was the very first one I had ever felt
I am glad everything turned out ok but sure you had nightmares for a long time after that.

Went to the gal’s house. I was surprised, I thought people she worked with would be there. But only 2 other friends of hers from when she worked at the mall and two children. She had food, two buckets of KFC, 4 boxes of Krispy Kreme donuts, 4 extra large pizzas, large container of mac & cheese, a large container of potato salad, rolls and a birthday cake (¼ sheet cake). I brought a pumpkin pie, and someone else made this really good soba noodle thing, and 3 bottles (2 ltr) of Coke. Only stayed 1-1/2 hr. But you know what? Looking at the food she had, I really wasn’t interested. The soba noodle thing that the one lady made, I liked and ate. But the other stuff didn’t appeal to me at all (yea)
dr3107 – I am so very sorry about your friend. Boy, you sure have been busy. Where are you going to?
Joy – great job on the floor!
Welcome Laney (update: Annie). You have a great home
Started the Christmas tree skirt for Jess. I’ll probably work on it some more when we go to FL in Feb.
Kylia – one thing I started to work on was a cross stitch of the flag of Poland for the lady who took care of my father. Only the pattern is on 6 different pages and you need to tape all the pages together. If you don’t line them up exactly, you can just imagine how your counts are off.
Lanette – I used a personal trainer, but I don’t any more. We basically used the machines and I’ve gotten to where I really don’t care for the machines. To me, they isolate the muscle too much. I think they are very good for rehab. Also, for so many you are sitting and so not using your ab muscles. I also felt that they were just there counting. I can count just as well as they can. Personally, I think a pet for an older person is a very good thing. Gives them a reason to get out, exercise and socialize. A pet gives unconditional love, it’s always there. MIL and FIL had a dog and when the dog passed, one of their neighbors commented that that was when they started to go downhill. So many people have asked us if we would like another cat. Sure, we will get more, but now is not the time. Loki has the seizure disorder, the anxiety disorder and cancer. We’re just going to let him live his life and be happy. He’s 15, introducing a kitten who wants to play when he wants to sleep, we think is just too stressful. When he does pass, we will absolutely get more cats. We’ve already stated in our wills that Jess is to get any cats we may have when we pass.
Anne – you are NOT selfish for being concerned for yourself. If you don’t take care of you, you won’t be any good for your parents. So glad your mom is getting better
Worked then the soup kitchen. They had homemade beef and vegetable soup. Did it ever smell great! Plus a ham and cheese grilled sandwich. Then stopped at Food Lion since they have Vince’s soda on sale today, tomorrow and Sun. Also got him Gatorade. Yes, they are more expensive than WalMart. BUT by buying it I get $2 off my next purchase so the price is really the same. Also got grapefruit that is on sale, I just don’t know if it’s a good sale or not. Also got some asian pears. That’s the only store that I know of that sells them. Got a gift card for the gal who does work with Make a Wish. After I left this one cashier who I’ve known for a long time (she was there when I was) comes out to the parking lot saying that someone wondered if I had paid for my groceries. Really, I can’t see another customer questioning it, so it must have been this one employee. I swear, S (the employee who asked me) is getting more and more “by the book”.
Starting to rain. I should have taken my walk earlier.
